“Take care to guard against

all greed, for though one

may be rich, one’s life does

not consist of possessions.” -- Luke 12:15

Brothers and Sisters,

Jesus warns against greed and says those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God will end up like the man in today’s Gospel parable.

Now, one thing to understand. Nowhere in the Gospels does Jesus condemn riches as such. Wealth is neither good nor bad. It’s the use of it that determines its moral status. Jesus appears to have had wealthy friends, whose company he enjoyed. Something interesting, he did not always make the same demands on people concerning wealth and material possession. He apparently adapted himself to different people and different circumstances.

Let’s examine a couple of examples of circumstances where he handled wealth differently. First, the rich man comes to Jesus and asks what he must do to gain eternal life. Jesus tells him to keep the commandments, and then if he wants to be perfect, to sell everything he has and give his money to the poor. Second, Zacchaeus tells Jesus he gives half of his money to the poor. Jesus asks nothing more of him. In these two cases and several more, Jesus looks to the individual and his or her needs and acts accordingly.

Money can create division. It can cause greed and greed destroys relationships and community and for that reason it is sinful.

Even before telling the story of the rich man in today’s Gospel, Jesus warns:

“Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”

God Bless, Deacon Del

Capital Campaign Corner

As we near the end of the formal solicitation phase of the Stepping Forward in Faith Capital Campaign—it concludes in a few weeks—we wish to take stock of our efforts. With $2,580,292 in gifts and pledges received to date, we’re at 83% of our $3.1 million goal! We need all families to participate to reach our overall goal. Your contributions will ensure that we receive the full benefit of our generous $1 million match.

Just a few months ago, reaching such heights seemed unrealistic. But thanks to the work of our volunteers, and the sacrifice of many in our faith community, we’re on the cusp of great success.

So, as we continue through the campaign’s final weeks, please consider how you can make a difference for your faith home. We welcome each gift, no matter the size. Every contribution takes us one step closer toward our goal.

If you wish to arrange a meeting with a volunteer, please contact the parish office. Please remember these words from 2 Corinthians 9:7:

Bible Study - Session 10 Last week, we heard about David’s rise to power, how God’s announcement to him prefigured Gabriel’s announcement to Mary regarding her son fulfilling the prophecies of old. The

covenant that God makes with David brings the Israelites another step closer in their relationship with God. Solomon, David’s son, will re-build the temple that had been destroyed, allowing the Jews to return to

Jerusalem for worship. Come and learn more about how the Old Testament points to the coming of Christ and the plan for our salvation. Mondays at 6:30pm or Tuesdays at 1:30pm in the Fireside Room.

Questions? Contact Carla: [email protected] or (952) 472-8204.

Liturgy Seeking God, Encountering God

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time • Luke 12:13-21

In the reading from the Gospel from Luke, we are invited to take stock of our lives.

If you’ve had the experience of down-sizing and moving to another house, you may realize you have so much STUFF!

Treasures include outdated clothes that don’t fit and your parents’ bedroom set that needs

refinishing if it’s to be used in your new home.

You discover keepsakes from when your adult children were in school such as awards, photos, art projects, and even birthday cards.

The bad news is that your children don’t have room for their stuff.

You may need to find a larger house!!

Where in your life are you rich in what matters to God?

The final verse of our responsorial psalm points to true richness when we are bathed in the kindness, joy, and gladness

of a life steeped in God’s gracious care.

-- Sr. Carrie

Discipleship … Faith In Action

“Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”

-- Luke 12:15

The Gospel message today is contrary to our modern culture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in

the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle and become more “other-centered” and less “self-centered.”
