This week at the Center….. THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT March 16, 2014
What Is Fasting? Fasting, broadly speaking, is the vol-untary avoidance of something that is good. When Catholics talk about fast-ing, we normally mean restricting the food that we eat. We can fast between meals, by not eating snacks, or we can engage in a complete fast by abstaining from all food. The English word breakfast, in fact, means the meal that breaks the fast. While fasting takes the form of refraining from eating, it is primarily a spiritual disci-pline designed to tame the body so that we can concen-trate on higher things. Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving - The Swiss Army Knife of the Spirit: That is why fasting is usually mentioned along with prayer and almsgiving (or charity). By controlling the passions of the body, we free our souls for prayer. And by refraining from eating, we free up food or money that we can give to those less fortunate than ourselves. The three spiritual disci-plines go hand in hand, and the Church calls us to prac-tice all three together, especially during the season of Lent.Lenten Fasting and Penance: Lent, the 40 days before Easter Sunday, is a season of the Church calendar set aside for Christians to do penance in prep-aration for the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Refraining from food can help us to bring our bodies under the control of our souls, but it is also a way of doing penance for past excesses. That is why the Church strongly recommends that Catholics fast during Lent. Current Church Law Regarding Fasting: The Church used to prescribe very rigorous rules for the Lenten fast (including abstinence from all meat and eating only one meal per day). The current rules, how-ever, are much more lax. Catholics are only required to fast on Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, and on Good Friday, the day that Jesus Christ was crucified. Anyone over the age of 18, but under the age of 60, should eat only one full meal on those days, although they can also have small amounts of food in the morn-ing and the evening Going Beyond What’s Required: The Church continues to encourage individual Catholics to observe a stricter fast. Extreme fasting, however, can be physi-cally harmful, so, as with all physical forms of penance and of spiritual discipline, you should consult with your priest before embarking on a very strict fast Asbout.com Catholicism Scott P. Bishop Tony Palmer’s response to Fr Mark’s question of “What should we do to achieve Christian Unity?”
Dear Fr. Mark In my experience to be united we need to be TOGETHER - to me this means TOGETHER for GOD's Mission - missio dei ..! We (my Order and the RCC) already:
- Evangelise together - Church plant together - Care for Orphans together
- Pray together - Bible Study together - Fellowship together
And what's more important we SPEAK WELL and even DEFEND each other to other Christians and non-Christians.
Any Congregation can do the above - if AGAPE love is present. Peace & Good + +Tony The Rt. Revd. Anthony Palmer The Order of The Ark Community

Breaking Bread Homeless Ministries News From The Streets…
What’s Your Gift? By Mary Martha Primerano A couple of weeks ago we met Danny, a student who is completing his final year in optometry school at the Uni-versity of Houston. Earlier in the year he did a mission trip to Mexico, and assisted in giving eye exams and hand-ing out glasses to the poor. He shared how the trip had touched his heart, and realized that examining people’s eyes was his gift! He wondered how God could use him and his gift of examining eyes in the USA. Then he met one of our friends Diane, and she directed him to Break-ing Bread. It was a quick meeting, but it was decided that he would return the following Saturday and give out eye exams to the homeless we serve. On that Saturday he returned with his equipment, and Walt set up a portable office for him. Before you knew it he had examined 7 pairs of eyes. The people were so blessed and thankful espe-cially when they all received their new eye glasses. What Danny has done reminds me of 1 Peter 4:10 which says “Each one should use whatever gifts he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” Also, Danny is a member of the praise and worship team at his church, and he brought out his guitar to sing praises to God with our homeless friends. I would call that a double blessing! Walt Primerano 713.661.7167 or [email protected]

Feast of St. Joseph, Husband of Mary March 19 The Bible pays Joseph the highest com-pliment: he was a “just” man. The quality meant a lot more than faithful-ness in paying debts. When the Bible speaks of God “justifying” someone, it means that God, the all-holy or “righteous” One, so transforms a person that the individual shares somehow in God’s own holiness, and hence it is really “right” for God to love him or her. In
other words, God is not playing games, acting as if we were lovable when we are not. By saying Joseph was “just,” the Bible means that he was one who was completely open to all that God wanted to do for him. He became holy by opening himself totally to God. The rest we can easily surmise. Think of the kind of love with which he wooed and won Mary, and the depth of the love they shared during their marriage. It is no contradiction of Joseph’s manly holiness that he decided to divorce Mary when she was found to be with child. The important words of the Bible are that he planned to do this “quietly” because he was “a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame” (Matthew 1:19). The just man was simply, joyfully, wholeheartedly obedient to God—in marry-ing Mary, in naming Jesus, in shepherding the precious pair to Egypt, in bringing them to Nazareth, in the undetermined number of years of quiet faith and courage.
