Oak Grove Mission Statement

Our mission is to glorify God through worship, bring people to faithful

discipleship in Christ, equip them for ministry in the church and the

world, and grow in our love for one another through fellowship.

FROM YOUR PASTOR

I always get excited when August rolls around each year. This is

when we celebrate the biggest festival of the Moravian year. It is

called the August 13th Festival where we commemorate the great

outpouring of the Holy Spirit on August 13, 1727 in Herrnhut. A

congregation of quarreling Christians was transformed into the

renewed Moravian Church. They were transformed and united by

the Holy Spirit in a profound and miraculous way. They put their

differences aside and learned to love one another. That day was

the beginning of a golden age for the Moravians. In 1732 they be-

gan sending missionaries all over the world. Zinzendorf de-

scribed the Moravians as “the Saviour’s happy people.” Indeed

they were a group of loving and dedicated Christians who took

seriously God’s call to share Christ with the world.

Now, over 250 years later, the fruit that was yielded from that

powerful spiritual experience has had long lasting results. From a

congregation of 300 in Herrnhut, the Moravian

Church has grown into a worldwide denomination of over

800,000. We may be small in number compared to other Chris-

tian denominations, but we have still had a great impact on the

world and we continue to share our faith in Christ with others.

Because we are small, we have maintained our simplistic style of

worship and our many beautiful traditions. We enjoy wonderful

fellowship with one another. Even today, God is still using us and

blessing us.

And even though the Holy Spirit is still at work in our lives and in

the Moravian Church today, we yearn for another powerful visita-

tion of the Spirit similar to that of August 13th. Like the early Mo-

ravians, may we be praying for it. Another great spiritual renewal

would be awesome. So, as we celebrate the wonderful spiritual

experience of 1727, may we also be aware of God’s presence with

us today and pray for another outpouring of the Holy Spirit. I

hope that another Moravian Pentecost is just around the corner.

Youth Fellowship Group Trip to Lake Myers

Everyone had a great time! Things rolled smoothly. Everyone

was breaking out of their comfort zones and getting to know each

other better. Several of us overcame water fears. We did every-

thing: water boggan, bumper boat, picnic or lunch at the café,

mini golf, arcade, both pools, diving board, waterslides,

basketball, playground, feeding ducks & eating hot dogs by

the fire! Join us when we do this again in June 2013!

From around the Southern Province

As summer turns the halfway mark toward fall, reports come in from camping at Laurel Ridge and mission trips near and far. And thoughts turn to outreach at schools. For example, the knit-ting ministry at Grace in Mount Airy is planning to purchase and knit items in area school colors to raise funds for more yarn for the knitting ministry. The Clemmons Women’s Fellowship has launched an “Empty Lockers” campaign to fill children’s lockers with supplies required by the school system. Fairview reminds that tax-free weekend, August 3-5, is a perfect opportunity to stretch buying power in outreach projects to provide school sup-plies. And Trinity has a collection box to give away school sup-plies at the annual Anthony’s Plot Block Party on August 11.

Hopewell is giving an extra touch to its year-young Christian Life Center. Porch roofs will be added to the three entrances that don’t have roof protection. Now all we will need is a little rain to enjoy the protected entrances.

Oak Grove is considering extending its capital campaign by raising an additional $125,000 in this its 125th anniversary year. Meanwhile, 116 bricks have been ordered for the prayer garden.

Raleigh reports that eight Moravian hymnals have found their way to Uganda, where they were “welcomed with loving arms . . . by the Moravian Church of Uganda.” It is truly amazing how glob-ally our little Moravian Church reaches.

Union Cross is checking on forming a handbell choir. “If you can count to 8,” the claim is, “you are a prime candidate” for join-ing. That must be true. I’m still struggling at “three.”

An article in the August issue of Stewardship re-

minds us of our duty to respond to God’s goodness.

For example, the article states that no portion of “our

time” is really our time ... it is all God’s “time” and

we should be grateful for the days and years God

gives us to live here on earth. Likewise, since our

bodies, minds, and spirits are gifts to us from God,

we have the responsibility to use them all to honor

God. If we misuse our minds, our bodies, or our tal-

ents, we are not being good stewards of what God

has given us; we are ignoring the Source of our exist-

ence and thus cheating both God and ourselves.

In the fifth chapter of Matthew we find Jesus say-

ing: “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost

its taste, how can it be restored? It is no longer good

for anything, but it is thrown out and trampled under-

foot.” Are we good “salt” striving to give a wonder-

ful flavor to this world through our stewardship or

are we simply living for ourselves without trying to

serve God? If we are to be effective “salt,” doesn’t

this mean that we must live as God’s people striving

to be good stewards of our time, talents, and what-

ever resources God has given us? Surely Christ’s de-

sire for us as his servants is to work to bring love,

peace, hope, and service to the entire world!

Prayer: Help us to live our lives being worthy stew-

ards, dear Lord, that we may ultimately enjoy eternal

fellowship with you. Amen.
