Mensa Annual Gathering in Hollywood, FL - July 5-9, 2017

Sylvia was Games Chair this year, so she arrived a day early to set up thegames room – and boxed up hundreds of games at the end, to be shipped

off to Indianapolis awaiting the 2018 Annual Gathering there.

The view from Sylvia's window. Beautiful!

RVC Column for Region 10

August 2017 Page 5

The response from the Annual Gathering in Hollywood earlier this month has beenoverwhelmingly positive, and I was stunned by the number of people who attendedthe Region 10 Meet and Greet. At the last few gatherings, our M&Gs have run from 5to 8 members, but this time we lost count after 60, with people standing outside thedoors of the room. Thanks to everyone who came, and I’m sorry we didn’t have roomfor everyone, but I did suggest to the organizers for the Indianapolis AG next yearthan they consider a larger room for their local members.

The AMC (American Mensa Committee) met on July 6, and the motion I put forthallowing for a temporary replacement for RVC vacancies passed by acclamation. Thisallows the administrative tasks of a region to continue without disruption and with-out burdening the remaining RVCs, as was the case with the previous ASIE (ActionStill In Effect), but it doesn’t allow for the substitute to have a vote on the AMC. Thiscan only be corrected through a bylaw change, and this cannot happen until the 2019election cycle. The Bylaws Committee will be working on a referendum to addressthis.

Another motion that passed by acclamation allows for the RVC to appoint assis-tants without seeking approval from the full AMC. This gives more flexibility to theRVC for each Region, as well as making it more efficient for the RVC to make use ofvolunteers as they become available. As I mentioned in last month’s column, there aresome opportunities arising, including openings for Regional Scholarship Chair and Re-gional Social Media Coordinator among others. By next month I hope to have the fulllist of open positions defined, and will request that they be posted to the Region 10website as well as the Mensa Region 10 Facebook group.

The new Appointed Officers for the AMC were named at the AMC meeting, and inkeeping with the turnover for elected officers that I noted last month, they are newofficers with good credentials. While Mensa Foundation President Marie Mayer willbe continuing as the Director of Science and Education, the three new appointeesare Tommy Ryan as Communications Officer, Alexis Wise as Marketing Officer (for-merly Development Officer), and Henri Buccine-Schraeder as Membership Officer. Ilook forward to working with them and with the rest of the new AMC. (For perspec-tive on how new this AMC is, the only remaining members from four years ago are in-

coming AMC Chair LaRae Bakerink, (who was 2nd Vice Chair four years ago), RVC6 Baker Ring, and myself.)

By next month I should have the full list of awards winners from our Region whowere recognized at the AG, and I will pass that information along here. But in themeantime I want to make special note that Central Florida Mensa’s “Tragic Kingdom”CultureQuest team won first place for the fourth year in a row – congratulations!

About Birthdays

Page 8 Tampa Bay Sounding

If you notice that your name is not in the appropriate monthly Birthday list, andwould prefer to have it listed, you can update your settings at the US Mensa web-site. (This was apparently reset recently, and you may have been switched back to“private” if you changed your info to public within the past few years -- I was.)

Go to https://www.us.mensa.org and log in, then click on My Mensa > My Profile atthe top. This will take you to the main profile page. Then click on “My Communica-tion Preferences” at the top right. In the “Member Directory” section, click the“Edit” link. There will be a check box called "Display birthdate online" which willun-block your birthday from the local data.

I'm not affiliated with HQ, so I don't know where else (y)our public informationcould be used.

Note: It appears there may be an issue with setting this flag, for members who areunder 18. If you have an underage child who is a member, and would like to makesure that his/her name is on the birthday list, please send an email [email protected], with the subject “TBM Birthday Announcement” atleast a month ahead of time, so I can add the name manually before the paper is -sue goes to the printer. --The Editor

Beyond His Wildest Dreams Ronnie Dubs

Page 12 Tampa Bay Sounding

Throughout the entire 2016 campaign season, we heard nothing of any Russian at-tempts to interfere in the election – it was a closely guarded secret between Obamaand his Intelligence chiefs. It was only after the election, just before the Electoral Col -lege was to certify the results, when former president Obama announced that Russiahad ‘hacked’ the election. I preface the word hacked as one of those vague ambiguouswords that can mean nothing or anything. I mean, did Russia steal America’s creditcard number and order some expensive goods online? What does that even mean, they ‘hacked’ the election? I’m not even sure it's grammatically correct.

In sworn testimony before the US Senate, former FBI director James Comey testifiedthat Putin supposedly ‘hacked’ the election for Trump, because Putin “didn’t likeHillary.” And we’re just supposed to accept that simplistic statement from an FBI Di-rector who’s proven himself incompetent and untrustworthy -- as if great nations acton the puerile whims of their leaders, like children on a playground. Ask yourself whysuch a smart individual as Vladimir Putin, leader of a nation almost totally dependenton oil and gas sales, would want the American candidate Trump, who promised to re-move us from the Paris climate accord, complete the unfinished oil and gas pipelinesto Canada, and open up America’s own vast oil and gas reserves to compete on worldmarkets with Russian supplies. All because “he didn’t like Hillary.” The very idea ofPutin preferring a Trump presidency is absurd, especially considering how Putin out-played, outsmarted, and humiliated every Democrat he came across on the MissileDefense shield in Poland, the invasion of the Ukraine, and the disaster in Syria precip-itated by John Kerry.

For argument, let’s accept the still unproven accusation that Putin interfered in ourelection. For what purpose, when he already knew one candidate was malleable tohis desires, judging from the US State Dept.’s approval of the Uranium One deal. Sec-retary Clinton signed off on selling 20% of America’s uranium to Russia -- after a half-million dollar speech by her husband in Moscow June 2010, and more donations toher Foundation. When Russia had already hacked into her unsecured email account, she foolishly accessed it again while in Russia, and undoubtedly had some useful dirton her. Trump was an unknown quantity to Putin, arrogantly pro-American, promis-ing a robust military and energy industry. Whatever possible preference could Putinhave had for either candidate is questionable, so what was the objective of this sup-posed interference?

I contend Putin’s real objective was not to help or harm either candidate, but toharm America itself. That Putin’s real objective was to sow the seeds of doubt and ha-tred within the fabric of America. Doubt as to the results of our own election, doubtsconcerning our national institutions like the FBI, CIA, and NSA, doubts concerning ourlegal system, the Department of Justice, and the US Presidency itself. His actions havealready paralyzed our congress – now ignoring pressing issues like healthcare, debt, and the looming bankruptcies of our cities and states. They now concentrate on con-cocted nonsense, like phony dossiers and anonymous leaked documents. In this re-gard, Putin has succeeded beyond his wildest dreams, aided and abetted in this by theNews Media, the Democratic Party, and a former President who waited until after hisparty’s defeat to interject the idea of Russian interference.

Tampa Bay's own Thomas Thomas, RVC Region 10, spent much of histime representing our interests in national-level meetings.

Sylvia Zadorozny, Charles Godfrey (one of our southernmost members), and Maran Fulvi (from the far northern reaches of Tampa Bay Mensa)

enjoyed playing games together.

On This Month in History: August Emma Edmund

Answer to the July Cryptopoem:

August 2017 Page 21

Ah, what pleasant visions haunt me

As I gaze upon the sea!

All the old romantic legends,

All my dreams, come back to me.

Sails of silk and ropes of sandal,

Such as gleam in ancient lore;

And the singing of the sailors,

And the answer from the shore. …

In each sail that skims the horizon,

In each landward-slowing breeze,

I behold that stately galley,

Hear those mournful melodies;

Till my soul is full of longing

For the secret of the sea,

And the heart of the great ocean

Sends a thrilling pulse through me.

~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, “The Secret of the Sea”

On August 6, 1926, Gertrude Ederle put on a record swim across the Eng-lish Channel in 14 hours and 31 minutes. The 20-year-old was an Olympic goldmedalist and women’s freestyle world record holder. Her gruesome swim fromCape Gris-Nez to Dover would stand as a record until 1950.

Birthdays in this month include Coco Chanel on August 19, 1883, andJacques Louis David on August 30, 1758. Chanel was a French fashion designer whorevolutionized women’s clothing with her Chanel brand and was credited for liber-ating women from the “corseted silhouette.” David was a French Court painter andneoclassicist whose paintings include Napoleon Crossing the Alps and The Death ofMarat.

Song of Myself

by Walt Whitman

I am of old and young, of the foolish asmuch as the wise,

Regardless of others, ever regardful ofothers,

Maternal as well as paternal, a child aswell as a man,

Stuff'd with the stuff that is coarse andstuff'd with the stuff that is fine,

One of the Nation of many nations, thesmallest the same and the largest thesame,

A Southerner soon as a Northerner, aplanter nonchalant and hospitable downby the Oconee I live,

A Yankee bound my own way ready fortrade, my joints the limberest joints onearth and the sternest joints on earth,

A Kentuckian walking the vale of theElkhorn in my deer-skin leggings, a Louisia-nian or Georgian,

A boatman over lakes or bays or alongcoasts, a Hoosier, Badger, Buckeye;

At home on Kanadian snow-shoes or upin the bush, or with fishermen off New-foundland,

At home in the fleet of ice-boats, sailingwith the rest and tacking,

At home on the hills of Vermont or in thewoods of Maine, or the Texan ranch,

Comrade of Californians, comrade of freeNorth-Westerners, (loving their big pro-portions,)

Comrade of raftsmen and coalmen, com-rade of all who shake hands and welcometo drink and meat,

A learner with the simplest, a teacher ofthe thoughtfullest,

A novice beginning yet experient of myri-ads of seasons,

Of every hue and caste am I, of everyrank and religion,

A farmer, mechanic, artist, gentleman, sailor, quaker,

Prisoner, fancy-man, rowdy, lawyer,physician, priest.

I resist any thing better than my own di-versity,

Breathe the air but leave plenty after me,

And am not stuck up, and am in myplace.

(The moth and the fish-eggs are in theirplace,

The bright suns I see and the dark suns Icannot see are in their place,

The palpable is in its place and the im-palpable is in its place.)
