LOCSEC’S REPORT Thomas George Thomas
As part of the larger American Mensa Ltd. organization, one of the responsibilities of our chapter is to contact the local group members who lapse each year. Many had already renewed without that con-tact, but in September I sent postcards to those who were still lapsed. Some of the responses have been illuminating.
People join Mensa for many reasons - this has become a familiar refrain to those of you who have read my columns. But people also bring different sets of expectations regarding what membership in the organization will offer them. When a member leaves Mensa, it’s because the organization hasn’t met those expectations.
What has surprised me – and perhaps it shouldn’t have – is how many people felt we failed their expectations, when in fact we were never aware of what their expectations were. One woman told me that she didn’t see any point in remaining a member because we never do anything in our chapter. I asked her if she had reviewed the calendar in the Tampa Bay Sounding or online at our web-site, and what other types of activities she would have liked to see that weren’t available. She responded, in all seriousness, that she did like what she saw in the calendar, but nobody ever called her to invite her to those events!
Believing that any individual event host should call all 635+ mem-bers would be one example of an unreasonable expectation. Each member should be able to take responsibility for their own expecta-tions. Part of that responsibility is letting somebody know what those expectations are if we’re not meeting them! We can’t be all things to all members, but we won’t even have the chance to grow to be better than we are if the members won’t tell us what they want.
Here’s my own example: When I joined Mensa, I had a mental im-age of the Algonquin Round Table of the 1920’s. I expected that we Mensans would meet in freewheeling conversation, employing liter-ate references. And even if these would be lost on most of the people in the rest of my life, I wouldn’t worry that we wouldn’t understand each other, because in the rare case someone didn’t understand, their curiosity would lead them to want to learn more. The image is certainly encouraged by the AML promotions office, which empha-sizes the “Mensa = Table” symbolism and the “We Get Your Jokes” tagline.
Tampa Bay Sounding Page 4
October 2008 Page 5
Of course, those expectations were dashed almost immediately as I met members who didn’t know what the Algonquin Round Table was.
But this didn’t stop me from enjoying Mensa, or finding those activi-ties which fit with my desires. The semimonthly Reading Group and Thursday Lunch Bunch are both fair approximations, and similar conversations crop up at Games or Trivia Nights, or at the monthly FSM. And as I’ve gone to these, I’ve made friends who I would never have even met in any other area of my life.
Perhaps social settings are not what you want from Mensa. You’re still welcome as a member, since you can create almost any type of group you want within our chapter, so long as you take the initiative! But it would be disappointing to find that next April, we’re calling you about your lapsed membership because you were waiting for us to intuit what you wanted.
Take the initiative! Give a member of the ExComm a call. Or write a letter to the editor explaining what you want from Mensa. If you reach out, someone else might see what you want, and want to join you. But if ten people who all want the same thing wait for someone else to start it, in all likelihood all ten will lose their opportunity.

* Years are for continuous membership - members who let their membership lapse start from the date of reinstatement.

THE TENTH STORY
(RVC COLUMN FOR REGION 10) – OCTOBER 2008
Maggie Truelove
The lengthy quote in this month's column is from last month's
column by RVC8 John Recht, who is the head of the Governance
Project.
He is asking for input from you the member. Please read what he
has to say and contact him if you have ideas and feedback for and
about the Governance Project.
"Last month I spoke about the Governance Project that the
American Mensa Committee (AMC) has undertaken with the help of
Tecker Consultants. The next major step in this process will take
place in November at the AMC's annual planning meeting. At that
time the AMC will have the chance to make substantial, ongoing
changes in the way it operates, beginning with the development of a
solid strategic plan. This plan will help better define authority and
responsibility of the AMC, officers, committees and staff, as well as
set tangible goals and the measurements for success.
"Critical to the success of this plan will be for the AMC to choose
goals that will be important to the ongoing growth and development
of American Mensa. As the AMC spends proportionately more of its
time making decisions that are more strategic in nature, it will corre-
spondingly find less on its plate that pertains to the development of
rules and procedures. Increasingly, authority will be delegated to
staff and committees to follow up with what needs to be done in the
organization.
"What are the goals that will be important to American
Mensa? Between now and November the AMC members will be dis-
cussing their ideas about what the goals should be and how the cur-
rent list of short-term and long-term goals should be revised. What
would help us tremendously at this time would be to have interested
October 2008 Page 9
members weigh in with their ideas and feedback about the Govern-
ance Project and the strategic planning process now underway, as
well as specific goals that they believe would be of benefit to the soci-
ety. If you would like to participate, please send your ideas to me at
[email protected], and keep an eye on the American Mensa Web
site for information about the process as it develops."
Hope to see you at the RG in Cocoa Beach later this month.

MINUTES FOR TAMPA BAY MENSA’S
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETINGS — JUNE 21, 2008
Jay Johnson, Scribe
(Abridged by Thomas Thomas for main points. Full 8-page transcript is on file and available on request.)
The June ExComm Meetings were held at the home of Barbara Loewe.
ExComm Members present: Thomas Thomas, Maxine Kushner, Theresa Hohmann, Dana Groulx, Sylvia Zadorozny, Ronan Heffer-nan, Kathy Crum, Richard Manno, Barbara Loewe.
Other TBM Members present: Jay Johnson (Scribe), Eloise Hurst, Maran Fulvi, Kim Nerviano, George Zadorozny, Kevin Clark.
The first meeting (of the outgoing ExComm) was called to order at 4:15 pm.
Reading of Minutes: Minutes of April 12 meeting were read and discussed. Motion: Accept minutes, seconded, carried.
Officers’ Reports:
LocSec: Thomas Thomas: Reported information from National Office including Lapsed Member program, Mensa Testing Day and Local Scholarship deadline for Local Group participation.
The LocSec report was interrupted to request results of Election.
Election Chair: Eloise Hurst: There were 37 ballots returned. Final results were:
36 votes for Kathy Crum 31 votes for Sylvia Zadorozny 29 votes for Maran Fulvi 21 votes for Theresa Hohmann
These four were elected to the four open seats on the Executive Committee.
18 votes for Richard Manno 1 vote (write-in) for Liz Rafaloski
Motion: Moved and seconded to accept Election result, carried.
LocSec (cont): Thomas Thomas: Thomas offered thank you to volunteers who helped with the success of Tampa Bay Mensa over the past year, specifically Gina Boogher, Sandy Davanzo and Kim-berly Nerviano. He welcomed recent new hosts including Mike Aston and Aaron Dakoff. Thanks were also offered to Ronan and
Tampa Bay Sounding Page 10
October 2008 Page 11
Dea Heffernan for offering to digitize our Soundings archives.
Treasurer: Kathy Crum: We are very close to budget; with RG registrations we have a net income of approximately $1,300 so far for the year.
Editor: Kimberly Nerviano (Interim Editor): Kimberly Nervi-ano has been discussing ideas with Ronan Heffernan and Jay John-son to have the newsletter and website work together for the best of both worlds. Thomas added that the Sounding received several nominations for National Publication Recognition Program (PRP) awards this year, including Dana Groulx for Calendar editor, Mensa Awareness, and Outstanding Newsletter for Large Group. Bud Ur-ban received a nomination for his poem “Dream Date”. Ronan Hef-fernan received website PRP nominations for Best Calendar, Mem-ber Recruitment, and Outstanding Large Group website.
Circulation: Thomas Thomas: Electronic subscriptions had an error in the National reports for renewing members but that was corrected. We now have approximately 70 electronic subscriptions and 550 paper subscriptions for the Sounding. Postage costs have gone up again recently, so benefits of electronic have already been absorbed.
Gifted Children: Theresa Hohmann: Had a successful Putt-Putt Golf outing in May. Theresa will focus on events that are kid-friendly, not just for kids.
Membership: Maxine Kushner: Crewe List now costs 93¢ to mail to new members. Thomas elaborated that national policy pro-hibits the mass electronic distribution of our member information, so this is not an option.
Testing: Thomas Thomas: We had a very successful May. Jay Johnson proctored two large tests—one at the RG and one at the Tarpon Library. We went from testing 0 people last May to testing 17 people this May, which should help Region 10 with the promo-tion for highest percentage increase in tests from May 2007 to May 2008.
Jay has another test scheduled for September with 5 registered so far. Thomas will try to arrange a test in Pasco.
Kevin Clark has volunteered to take on Testing Coordinator, which will be discussed in the second meeting.
WebSpinner: Ronan Heffernan: Jay thanked Ronan for posting the new test dates so quickly.
RG: Maran Fulvi: We had 131 people attend for at least one day, not including speakers and testing prospects. In general the event went well. A survey of the attendees showed that we had an overall positive response, with increased satisfaction over the past year in all categories except the hotel (which was still 2/3 positive). Over-all, attendees gave the two highest consideration ratings to hotel selection and costs.
Success of attendance this year is attributed to better promotion, including personal invitations, networking, email lists and promo-tion at other RGs.
CultureQuest: Thomas Thomas: We presented a team this year and based on preliminary feedback may have a shot at the Top 20, which would net us a monetary award for our Scholarship fund. The team was Mike Aston, Ronan Heffernan, Kyle Lai, Nathan Al-bright and Thomas Thomas. Alternates were Kathy Crum and Liz Rafaloski. .
Motion to adjourn: Second, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 5:34 p.m.
The second meeting (of the incoming ExComm) was called to order at 5:53 pm.
ExComm Members present: Thomas Thomas, Maxine Kushner, Theresa Hohmann, Dana Groulx, Sylvia Zadorozny, Ronan Heffer-nan, Kathy Crum, Richard Manno, Barbara Loewe.
Other TBM Members present: Jay Johnson (Scribe), Eloise Hurst, Richard Manno, Kim Nerviano, George Zadorozny, Kevin Clark.

Motion: Moved, seconded, passed: Ronan Heffernan is appointed WebSpinner.
Motion: Moved, seconded, passed: Maxine Kushner is appointed Membership Officer.
Motion: Moved, seconded, passed: Maran Fulvi is appointed Pro-grams Officer.
Motion: Moved, seconded: Kevin Clark to be appointed Testing Coordinator. Discussion: Kevin Clark explained the types of co-ordination he’s done in the past. Thomas reiterated that the Test-ing Coordinator position, unlike the Proctor Coordinator position, does not require certification as a Proctor. Motion called and passed: Kevin Clark is appointed Testing Coordinator.
Motion: Moved, seconded, passed: Jay Johnson is appointed Scribe.
Motion: Moved, seconded, passed: Les Milewski is appointed Publisher.
Motion: Moved, seconded, passed: Marilyn Wolf is appointed Scholarship Chair.
Motion: Moved, seconded, passed: Susan Anderson is appointed S.I.G.H.T. Coordinator.
Continuing Business:
New Member Meeting: Thomas mentioned that this had been discussed in the April meeting. No progress made at finding a space at this time. Thomas, Barbara and Maran had been on point to coordinate but had not done so yet. Still hoping to do this in Sep-tember. Suggestion made to combine with picnic. Also discussed to have quarterly picnics.
Mega Gathering: Richard Manno had contacted seven people with no progress. He wants to discuss with Mel Dahl from Central Flor-ida Mensa, who is running for RVC. He also wants to discuss ideas with members in New Hampshire who are also doing a cooperative RG. Richard wants to start with those groups who are not planning their own RG and also to discuss with our RG Chair for next year. Discussion: Which other groups, practicality of volunteer chairs unfamiliar with site, cost-and-revenue sharing, whether this would replace our own RG.
New Business:
Fall Picnic: Maxine will check out sites.
Sounding Advertising Rates: Thomas reported that cost of run-ning an ad is now greater than the revenues that come from the ad. Proposed raising our ad rates. Discussion on whether we should run ads at all, what the cost of a Sounding is with and without ads, cost of larger Soundings. ExComm requested that Thomas bring more numbers.
Regional Gathering: Motion: To have a 2009 RG. Seconded, carried. Motion: To appoint Maran Fulvi as RG Honcho. Sec-onded, discussion. Maran would only accept provisionally if she could find a Hospitality Chair; she won’t do both. Motion called, passed with one abstention.
Next ExComm Meeting: August 23 at TBD at the home of Maran Fulvi.
Motion to adjourn: Second, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 7:32 p.m.

THE ALIENS ARE HERE! Maran Fulvi
Well, maybe not. But we do have quite a bit of evidence that some-thing strange is going on.
On Friday August 8th, TBM was excited to host Henry Kalapaca, retired nuclear physicist, and former Air Force nuclear weapons offi-cer, as he guided us through some of the most credible UFO evi-dence and testimony currently in the public record.
With all of the skepticism we’d expect from a true scientist, Henry discussed various reasons why many dismiss alien contact as impos-sible, while examining each in the light of emerging science to cast doubt on that kind of certainty. He also reviewed a documentary film with us, addressing UFO sightings, evidence and testimony from respected scientists, military personnel, and government docu-ments.
So did our attendees leave convinced of aliens among us? Well, speaking for myself, I still don’t know if it’s aliens, but the evidence that something strange is going on was pretty unsettling!
All in all, we had a great evening. And we even saw the return of a few Mensans who haven’t been out to programs in a while! Do you have an idea for a speaker or program night? If you have an interest, you can bet there are other Mensans eager to share it with you. Just call our Programs Director, Maran Fulvi, at 727-421-4728, or email [email protected] with your ideas.
TOP TEN TV ALL-TIME FAVORITE TV SHOWS Jay Johnson
Don Davis and Kyle Lai present their Top 10 All-Time Favorite TV Shows this month. Don found a great solution to the problem of how to order his list; he sent it to me in to me in alphabetical order so the whole problem of sorting just goes away. That is a good solu-tion for many of us who just can’t decide which show ranks higher than another. Don also couldn’t settle on just 10 shows total so he sent me 10 picks, and then another 10. That’s fine with me, the more shows I can put on my database the more reliable it will be when I try to find the TBM Top Ten All Time Favorite TV Shows. Take a look at Don’s list; can you get a clue which show will be the biggest TBM favorite?
My Top 10 All-Time Favorite TV Shows presented by Don Davis
All In The Family The Great American Dream Machine Malcolm in the Middle The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis M*A*S*H* The Muppet Show The New Red Green Show Pee-Wee’s Playhouse Rocky and his Friends The Simpsons
My Next Top 10:
Amazing Stories The Ed Sullivan Show Disney’s Wonderful World of Color The Goodies Jokebook Marshall Efron’s Illustrated Simplified Painless Bible Stories Michael Nesmith’s TV Parts Patterns in Music The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour Spongebob Squarepants
Tampa Bay Sounding Page 16
Don’s list took me back to some great moments in TV such as Paul Reuben’s great line on his first TV appearance following his personal debacle, the way the Smothers Brothers managed to get in zingers with their comedy, and a nod to the brilliant Jim Hensen who gave us such a gift of charm. Thanks, Don, you made my day.
This list from Kyle Lai will challenge your memory. I had to look up a few of the titles on IMDB. This is one of those times I wish I had a note as to why each is a favorite. Are any of his picks on your list? Let me know.
My Top 10 All-Time Favorite TV Shows presented by Kyle Lai
1) I’ve Got a Secret (1952 – 1967) 2) Crossballs (2004) 3) Twilight Zone (1959 – 1964) 4) Mr. Show (1995 – 1998) 5) Trigger Happy TV (2003) 6) Home Movies (1999 – 2004) 7) MythBusters (2003 -) 8) Wonder Showzen (2005 – 2006) 9) Johnny Staccato (1959 – 1960) 10) Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn (1999 – 2004)
Thanks, Kyle. Um, can I get those on Netflix?
You others, make your choices known and send your Top Ten (twenty, or whatever) to: [email protected], and check the excellent database at www.epguides.com for a reminder.

OLYMPIAN
As I stride, and as I run, and through my sweat, defy the sun.
I see my goal, I see my quest, To reach the height, to be the best.
Through the stress and through the strain, I must endure, defeat the pain.
I’ve trained so long, I’ve trained so hard. I have to go that extra yard.
I give my spirit, and my heart, to set myself a class apart.
I am my people, and my kin. For them I run, this race I’m in.
I cannot slow, I cannot rest. I have to pass this final test.
Sweat won’t damp, and pain can’t spin, this firm yet fragile, will to win.
I wish not wealth, I want not fame. Olympic gold just calls my name.
It brings a tear, it wets my eye. The joy of victory makes me cry.

FOURTH (NOT LAST) FRIDAY MADNESS AUGUST 22, 2008
Phoebe McCann
What a lively meeting this was! We had the Olive Garden’s “bottomless pasta bowl.” Unfortunately I didn’t realize one could order a small bowl of one type and then additional small bowls of something else. I ordered a regular size bowl of meat sauce and once I was thoroughly replete, did not have room for even a small bowl of anything else. KIMBERLY NERVIANO taught us that “Oricchiette” pasta translates to “mouse ears” or “little ears.” Delicioso! Bottomless pasta bowl may continue into the beginning of October.
I thought the conversation at the dinner would center on politics what with the elections coming up so soon, but not so! Someone whose identity I promised to protect did mention that s/he thought Obama’s speech in Tampa was the best s/he’d ever heard since Jack Kennedy. Actually, I thought Palin’s acceptance speech was hot stuff a couple of weeks after our meeting. The similarity be-tween (among?) all three politicians above-mentioned is that they have staff members called “speech writers”, so while I’m sure the various “combatants” probably review and approve everything they’re given to say, they don’t necessarily have much, if anything to do with writing it. Now their delivery ... that’s something else again!
We had a new (new to us anyway) person ... RUFUS KILL-BOURNE. Unfortunately I didn’t get much chance to converse with him so I’ll have to wait until next time he shows up and try to corner him. Hopefully now that he knows we don’t bite, he’ll be back soon. Unlike DELPHINE JENNESS! We hardly ever see Delphine! I know it’s a loooong drive, Delphine, from Land O’ Lakes, but we miss you!
RONNIE DUBS says Kim has been great at learning to shoot. Well, what did he expect? She’s a Mensan! I hope I’ll be able to go the next time he has one of his big bad shoot ‘em ups. I really enjoy shooting. I meant to tell SYLVIA ZADOROZNY that I’d finally located a Jack Benny tape she’d lent me last year ... and I’d also forgotten to bring it to the meeting. Hopefully I’ll remember to bring it to September’s meeting. Hopefully I’ll remember to bring my head. THOMAS THOMAS sauntered in and managed to sit as far from me as possible, as usual. Was it something I said? Bad breath, perhaps?
Tampa Bay Sounding Page 28
October 2008 Page 29
It was good to see TOM HANDCOCK and wife KYLE NERBERG and get a chance to chat. I found it interesting that we had two couples this time whose wives had kept their maiden names: CARL HAMMEN’s wife’s name is DEBORAH KAZOR. It caused me to reflect how much things can change in a generation or two. For a woman to keep her maiden name was so rare when I was a youngster (back when we used to circle the wagons at night as protection against the Indians [another change: Native Americans]) that the only instances of it I can recall were movie stars and some writers ... basically women who’d already established themselves in some field or another and wanted to keep their fame intact.
Well, that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it. See ya next time!

FLORIDA AMENDMENTS
Bonnie Wilpon
Having just finished working at the polls for the August 26 primary, my attention has now turned to the Amendments coming up on the ballot this November for Floridians.
Official state details of them all can be found at:
http://election.dos.state.fl.us/initiatives/initiativelist.asp
Look for them alphabetically per the names below.
My take:
Amendment 2 (Florida Marriage Protection Amendment)
Sponsored by Florida4Marriage, a group formed by the FL Catholic Conference and the FL Baptist Convention, this sweetly-named amendment actually debases the religious concept of marriage and renders it a civil institution defined as only between a man and a woman. More far-reaching than that, it invalidates all other civil unions (such as common-law marriages) and would mean that un-married couples have no legal standing with each other. This will particularly affect elderly couples who don't marry due to financial considerations. In these cases, one partner could not, for example, make medical decisions for the other or have "family standing" in hospital (and other) situations.
I plan to vote NO.
Amendment 7 (Religious Freedom)
A direct attack on separation of church and state, this amendment specifically deletes the prohibition against using state revenue to aid churches, sects and religious denominations. Thus, public funds will be available to uncontrolled support of any religious group the state decides to give our money to.
I plan to vote NO.
Amendment 9 (REQUIRING 65 PERCENT OF SCHOOL FUNDING FOR CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION; STATE'S DUTY FOR CHIL-DREN'S EDUCATION)
Weakens public schools tremendously and invalidates the FL Su-preme Court's Bush v Holmes decision. The language removes
Tampa Bay Sounding Page 30
October 2008 Page 31
(from the state constitution) the idea that "a paramount duty of the state is a uniform, efficient, safe, secure and high quality system of free public schools". The new language in Article IX, Section 1 will say that "this duty shall be fulfilled - at a minimum, and not exclu-sively - through public schools" - clearing the way for state funds to be taken away from public schools and given to religious and other private schools at the whim of the state and its politicians.
I plan to vote NO.
A coalition lawsuit has been filed regarding Amendments 7 and 9, charging that the FL Tax and Budget Reform Commission exceeded its authority, since neither amendment deals with taxation or budg-eting. The lawsuit is backed by Americans United for Separation of Church and State, FL Education Association, FL School Boards Assn, FL Assn of District School Superintendants, FL Assn of School Administrators, ACLU, Anti-Defamation League and People for the American Way.
I welcome your take, info and/or links on any of these. It's always difficult to "do the homework" on the amendments!

ANSWER TO AUGUST’S CRYPTOPOEM Sylvia Zadorozny
There's a path that leads to Nowhere In a meadow that I know, Where an inland river rises And the stream is still and slow.... All the ways that lead to Somewhere Echo with the hurrying feet Of the Struggling and the Striving, But the way I find so sweet Bids me dream and bids me linger-- Joy and Beauty are its goal; On the path that leads to Nowhere I have sometimes found my soul. --Corinne Roosevelt Robinson (seen on a Celestial Seasonings tea box)
