The Perfect Gift

It is that time of year when we seek to find that perfect gifts to give to our family, friends, and coworkers.

When I think of looking for the perfect gift, I think of my friend Stacy. She would start me on one of my

greatest quests for the perfect Christmas gift I was to ever experience in my lifetime.

Stacy was a hospice patient and I was her hospice volunteer companion. Stacy was a Chronic Obstructive

Pulmonary Disease (COPD) sufferer. We were the best of friends for the last year and a half of her life. By the

time I had met her, she was essentially living in her living room recliner due to her illness. I treasure the many

conversations that we enjoyed together. As she was confined to her chair, she would live vicariously through

me. She would ask me about the meals I had at restaurants, and inquire about the movie I saw at the cinema.

She even asked me about the ice hockey games that I attended. (I was impressed by this as I knew that she was

not a fan and did not understand the game.)

Stacy could also be a little bit of a Diva as well. It was not uncommon for her to “fire” her nurses, CNA’s and

social workers. This Diva attitude may have been because she was an off-Broadway actress and a co-host of a

California children’s television show. She even did some of the voiceovers for the 1960’s English Leather

commercials. “My man wears English Leather, or he wears nothing at all.” Many a time I would receive a

phone call from her, “Daaarling, I really must have Boston Market chicken for dinner this evening.” I would

happily oblige her requests and travel 20 miles to the nearest restaurant to purchase and deliver her meal.

I should have seen it coming; the impossible gift quest that she was about to impose on me. When I asked her

what she wanted for Christmas, she first reminded me that she was Jewish, but quickly added, “I MUST have a

pink Ralph Lauren button-down oxford shirt.” And with less than two weeks to shop, thus began the quest.

My wife and I went in search of this shirt in every shopping mall and clothing store within a 30-mile radius.

We were told that pink was not a fashionable color this year and as a result, the stores were not stocking that

shirt. Undeterred by this we continued to visit every ladies wear store until we came as close as we could to

Stacy’s request; close, but not exact. We found an off brand, oxford button-down shirt, pink with white pin-

stripes.

On Christmas afternoon, I presented Stacy with her gift. She opened her package and pulled out the pink

striped shirt. Stacy always being on stage, quickly smiled, but not before I could see the briefest looks of

disappointment. I explained all that we had been through in the search to fill her request. Stacy could not

believe all that I told her about the gift quest, and with a tear in her eye, she acknowledged that the true gift

was that we went to such great lengths to find her “imperfect” gift and the love from friends willing to do so.

As for her not observing Christmas, she had a gift for me too. On the kitchen counter was a small, carefully

wrapped package. My gift from Stacy. It was a silver reindeer bell like the photo below. Every year as we dec-

orate our home for Christmas, we stop what we are doing when we run across Stacy’s bell and share our sto-

ries of our shared friendship and love.

Soldiers Candle of Hope

Light a Candle of Hope on Christmas Day

For our soldiers who will not be home

Let them know we’re proud of them

And that they will never be alone

See the flame and think of it

As fire in the soldier’s hearts

The fire that will keep them strong and brave

While we are far apart

Think of the candle’s golden glow

As an Angel’s protective light

Keeping our soldier’s safe from harm

While we are out of sight

Feel the warmth and imagine it

As love held deep inside

The love that shows how much we care

And how they fill our hearts with pride

So for our soldiers near and far

On Christmas Day each year

Light a Candle of Hope to remember them

While they cannot be here

Thanksgiving

Thanks to all who participated in the Thanksgiving luncheon at Georgia War. We fed about 160 residents and

family members in the dining room. Everyone was very happy and enjoyed the meal and fellowship. Hats off

to Georgia War and Morrisons for putting together such a wonderful event for our families and their loved

ones.
