AN EARLY PRINTING OF CICERO’S GREAT SERIES OF TREATISES ON THE ART OF ORATION. Marcus Cicero, ora-tor, lawyer, politician, and writer was one of the most renowned and influential men of the Roman World. A prolific writer and speaker, it is through him that much of the history of Rome is known. Cicero took oration very seriously, essentially concluding that the perfect orator must also be the perfect man. These three treatises are one of his chief rhetorical works, meant to form a continuous series contain-ing a complete system of rhetorical training: the first deals with the studies necessary for an orator, the second with the treatment of the subject matter, and the third with the form and delivery of the speech. A very handsome and well-preserved copy of one of Cicero’s most significant works of rhetoric.

Queen, Ellery. THE SPANISH CAPE MYSTERY. A Problem in Deduction (New York: Frederick Stokes Company, 1935) First Edition. The endpapers decorated with sketch of the Spanish Cape Cove printed in green. 8vo, in the original bright red cloth lettered in black on upper cover and spine. A very nice copy, but for a bit of inevitable mellowing to the red cloth of the spine it is near very fine. FIRST EDITION, THE AUTHORS’ FAVORITE OF ALL THE NOVELS WRITTEN. The Spanish Cape Mystery concerns the problem

of the undressed man. The Ellery Queen novels, written by Frederic Dannay and Manford Lepofsky under the pseudonym of their main character, are gems of the golden age of mystery writing. The reader obtains clues in the same way as the protagonist detective, thus the books become intellectually challenging puzzles. THE SPANISH CAPE MYSTERY was the first Ellery Queen novel to be made into a motion picture, though many more would follow.

unfortunately quite prone. The jacket is lacking its spine panel but the upper and lower cover and flaps are fully present with only a few chips. In all very attractive. SCARCE IN DUSTJACKET AND A FINE WORK, BEAUTI-FULLY ILLUSTRATED. One of Pyle’s best and most popular books, and an uncommon find in the dustjacket. Pyle’s paintings have been a virtual treasure chest of imagery for roughly a century now. They have been drawn upon, copied, reproduced and borrowed from. They have been an inspiration for costumers from the swashbuckling silent films in the early 1900s to Johnny Depp in the 21st century.
