Machining and/or hardening of stainless steels has historically been with the risk of poor corrosion resistance; but not anymore. Both salt spray and potentiostatic corrosion tests reveal outstanding corrosion resistance of Expanite hardened stainless steel. With Expanite it ’s not only about maintaining corrosion resistance, it ’s about improving!

“Soft against soft” – galling, or adhesive wear, is a pervasive problem for stainless steels – but not necessarily anymore. Studies using the ASTM G98 test clearly shows that for a mating couple of SuperExpanite-treated surfaces of AISI316, galling is completely removed – unprecedented!

Working with stainless steel has always been associated with challenges no matter application or industry. Some of the most common challenges include the low wear and galling resistance caused by the inherited softness of stainless steel – and when trying to mitigate this by applying previously known hardening techniques; loosing corrosion resistance is at risk. Expanite is changing the game; these challenges are now history.

Based on the impressive surface hardness achieved by Expanite’s nitrocarburizing – up to 1200-1500HV – the wear resistance sets new standards. Results from an ASTM G133 wear test show a 168 times improvement in performance when comparing SuperExpanite hardened AISI316 steel against an untreated reference.

ExpaniteHigh-T

The purpose of this process is to dissolve nitrogen in the surface of stainless steel to a depth in the range of 0.2-2 mm. Peak hardness ranges from 280HV on austenitic grades to 950HV on martensitic/ferritic grades

ExpaniteLow-TThe purpose of this process is to dissolve nitrogen and carbon in the surface of stainless steel to a depth in the range of 5-45 µm. Peak hardness ranges from 1000-1200HV on austenitic grades to 1200-1800HV on martensitic/ferritic grades

SuperExpaniteThe purpose of this process is to combine ExpaniteHigh-T and ExpaniteLow-T processes to achieve higher load bearing and corrosion properties. Firstly, the ExpaniteHigh-T process is applied to create a deep case detph with moderate nitrogen content. Secondly, the ExpaniteLow-T process is applied to create a high-hardness surface on top of the ExpaniteHigh-T zone.

The Expanite processes does not result in a coating, but a diffusion zone with an increased carbon and nitrogen content. We call this zone expanded austenite, expanded martensite, or simply, Expanite.

Titanium – another game-changer

Expanite is, with its brand-new solution forinterstitial hardening of titanium, introducing yet another game-changer within surface hardening.

Like with stainless steel, titanium as a material is suffering from its softness leading to poor wear and galling resistance. This is limiting the use of the material and forcing design engineers to make compromises. However, by applying the ExpaniteHard-Ti process, surface hardness can be increased 8-10 times to approx. 1000HV and thereby a new reality is available.

ExpaniteHard-Ti is a gas-based interstitial hardening process leaving no coating on the surface and thus nothing that can spall off. Titanium nitrides are completely avoided – and thereby also the ‘golden color ’. The actual hardening zone can be tailored to have a case depth of 10-80µm and surfaces can be post-polished to mirror f inish.

Like with everything else Expanite offers, leads time are extremely short and total life cycle cost is in focus.

Expanite processes...

...are applicable to the most common stainless steel alloys incl. austenitic, martensitic, ferritic and duplex grades.

...are gaseous, thus properties can be tailored to match your exact needs.

...can deliver parts that withstand 1000+ hours in salt spray, while having a controlled surface hardness of 1000-1500HV.

...run on a day-to-day basis, resulting in lead-times signifi cantly lower than alternatives.

...can either be off ered from our treatment centre or implemented on-site, directly in your production line.

As opposed to pvd or similar coating processes, the Expanite process does not result in a coating, but rather, a hardened surface zone with a higher concen-tration of carbon and nitrogen.

The stainless steel surface is covered with a thin oxide fi lm. The oxide fi lm acts as a barrier for the transfer of carbon and nitrogen atoms to the metal.

The gaseous Expanite treatment removes the oxide fi lm and allows an incorporation of carbon and nitrogen atoms in the underlying metal. After the treatment, the oxide fi lm layer is re-established naturally.

Based on ongoing research since 2000, and founded in 2010 by leading scientists in the fi eld of surface hardening, Expanite has its roots deeply planted in a fact-driven environment.

The philosophy is quite simple; we want to off er the best solutions for surface-hardening of stainless steel! Today, Expanite is changing the game by not only moving the limits of what performance can be expected from stainless steel but also by letting our customers implement the processes directly in their facilities.

Today Expanite has customers from many regions around the world who either appreciate our outstanding service from our treatments centers or who has equipment of their own executing Expanite’s technology. No matter where and how, we guarantee the same fi rst-class product and support, and we are pushing ourselves and our customers to set new standards for the application of stainless steel and titanium within a wide range of industries. Don’t hesitate to approach us if you would like to learn how we can help you.
