Message from the CEO

It is exciting to lead the Australia Council in this time of change,as we build on the work of the last four decades and find new

ways to develop and support a vibrant arts sector in Australia.In July 2013, the Australia Council adopted one of themost significant changes in its history a new governinglegislation. This change will in time, enable us to respondmore flexibly to the needs of the arts sector. The reforms

will be implemented throughout 201415, including anew grant structure and an increase in the diversity andbreadth of peers engaged in grant assessment.

We were also delighted to see the reforms accompanied bya boost in funding for the sector we support. The increasedfunding has had an immediate and substantial impact acrossall art forms, and will continue to do so in the year ahead.It has increased the opportunities to recognise excellencethrough existing programs, new development grants, andstrategic initiatives at the national and international level.

What we fund

Our funding falls into two areas:

Grants

Grants are available to any practising professional artist or artsworker who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Grantsare available for Australian or overseas organisations for internationalprojects that involve Australian artists and their work.

Initiatives

The Council supports a range of short term initiatives. Theseinitiatives are important to the vitality and sustainability of the artsin Australia, and develop audiences for Australian arts.

How your application is assessed

Applications are assessed by an assessmentpanel of peers. These assessments aremade against the stated selection criteria andapplications are rated and ranked in relation toeach other. The decisions are based primarilyon information supplied in your application andsupport material.

Who assesses your application

Assessment panels are made up of peerswho practise or have practised in an artform,and are closely associated with the arts or arecommunity interest representatives. Visit our

website for details on current assessmentpanel membership.

If you are successful

If you applied online we will send you an emailadvising that a decision has been made, you willneed to log on to our online system to acceptthe terms and conditions of your grant.

If you submitted a hard copy application wewill send you an email o r letter confirming thesuccess of your application, with a fundingagreement outlining the terms and conditionsof your grant. You should then check, sign andreturn a copy of this agreement to us.

To receive a grant payment you will then needto send us a tax invoice. Grants can be paid infull or be paid in increments. When the projectis finished you must submit an acquittal report

for your grant that describes the key artisticoutcomes. You may also be required to providea financial statement showing how the grant

was spent.

Appealing a grant decision

You can only appeal a grant decision i f youthink that there has been a specific problem

with the assessment process. Your requestfor a review must be received within 28 daysfrom the date of the decisions notification.

The Councils Decisions Review Committee willreview requests that demonstrate due process

was not followed.

Applications are accepted in any language.To speak to us in your first language, callthe Translating and Interpreting Service on131 450 and ask to be connected to the

Australia Council.

We support the use of Australias Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander languages. To discuss

hat can I get a grant for?

e Australia Council supports a wide rangearts and cultural activities that involveofessional artists or arts workers. Grantsually support specific activities, so be surecarefully check the relevant grant informationline before applying.

e do not fund spending on:

major capital items and equipment

some types of training andeducational activities

academic conferences

nstructional or technical activities

core costs for running competitions or awards.

What might make my application ineligible?

Your application will be considered ineligible if:

You dont meet the eligibility criteria.

You dont use the correct application form.

You dont include all the required informationand support material.

You havent satisfactorily acquitted a previousgrant from the Australia Council.

You owe money to the Australia Council.

You will be participating in the assessmentprocess for the grant category to which

you have applied.

Your project involves someone who will

participate as a peer in the assessmentprocess for the grant category and they willbe the sole or major beneficiary of the funding.

You are requesting funding for activitiesthat have already occurred or will occurbefore the published commencementdate for the grant category.

Your application is received after the closingdate (or postmarked after the closing date).

It is for an activity the Australia Councildoes not fund.

What are the chances of getting a grant?

The Australia Council receives more applicationsthan it can fund. You may find it helpful toreview the approved grants lists or assessmentmeeting reports published on our website togain insight into the types of applications thathave been previously successful.

How many times can I apply?

In general, individuals and organisationscan submit up to five applications to grantcategories per calendar year. However, thereare some restrictions:

You can only submit two applications to thesame artform section in one calendar year.Some categories only accept one applicationper year.

You can only submit one application per grantcategory closing date.

Some grant categories have restrictions thatlimit how often you can make an application.

If you are in receipt of a Key Organisations

grant, you can submit up to four otherapplications in any year for the periodof your funding (eligibility rules of therelevant category will apply).

If you received a Key Organisationsgrant you cannot submit another KeyOrganisations grant application for the

whole of your funded period.

If you received a Fellowship grant fromany board after 1995, you are not eligibleto apply to this category.

If you are applying for the ContemporaryTouring Initiative, Contemporary Music TouringProgram, Festivals Australia, Playing Australiaand Visions of Australia, your application willnot be counted towards the five applicationlimit and you may apply multiple times.
