Benefit from extensive academic support throughout your studies

At Swinburne, we believe university should be a place of clarity and confidence. We want you to easily understand the requirements of your course and the outcomes of your degree.

Our degree structure gives you the freedom to choose between taking one or two majors, or adjusting your direction at any point.

You’ll also discover more work-based learning in our degrees, including professional internships and industry tours.

Enjoy more clarity, choices and flexibility in your studies at Swinburne.

Degrees

Our standard three-year degrees comprise 24 units of study.

Most of these units will focus on your primary area of study, which becomes your major. You can study one or two majors to deepen your knowledge in a particular area and sharpen your career focus. You can also choose a co-major, a set of units that differ from the field of study of your course, to add breadth to your studies.

All courses have core units that are designed to prepare you with essential skills and knowledge relevant to your chosen career.

The remaining course components that you can choose from are elective units and minors, which allow you to explore related or non-related study areas of interest. Our Signature Series of elective units aims to build practical skills and an expanded understanding of the world through units like Indigenous Studies, Professional Internship and Future Work Skills.

Sample degree structures are included at the beginning of each study area to show how you may structure your degree.

Double degrees

Double degrees are a great way to broaden your study experience and are highly respected by employers. They combine two areas of study and, on completion, you’ll be awarded two degrees.

Honours

You may be able to pursue your undergraduate studies at an advanced level by completing an additional specialised honours (fourth) year. An honours year allows you to deepen your understanding in your major field and develop your research skills. Many of our bachelor degrees have an integrated honours year, including design and engineering degrees.

English LANGUAGE COURSES

English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) give you the opportunity to learn from qualified teachers, interact in English in a multicultural environment, and prepare for entry to other Swinburne programs.

Courses range from elementary to advanced levels. A new intake commences every five weeks so you can start when it suits you.

Course duration is between five and 50 weeks. The length of your course will depend on your current level of English and whether you want to continue with further study.

All English language courses are delivered at the Hawthorn campus.

Visit www.swinburne.edu.au/elicos

General English

Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-intermediate and AdvancedThese courses prepare you to join our English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs or can be taken as a way of improving your language skills for use in everyday situations. The broad aim of General English is to improve your overall English language skills in an Australian context. Through a range of activities, we will help you to improve your writing, reading, listening, speaking and pronunciation, and grammar knowledge.

English for Academic Purposes

Intermediate, Upper-intermediate and AdvancedEnglish for Academic Purposes (EAP) prepares you for direct entry to Swinburne University of Technology. The courses focus on academic language, critical thinking and academic literacy skills, and aim to enhance your success in your higher education course.

Students develop skills in:

• assignment preparation • academic reading, writing and note-making • communication and interaction in the

academic environment • oral presentations and seminar discussions • academic vocabulary development • referencing sources • research techniques • communicating confidently in English • independent study skills• e-learning.

At the advanced levels, classes are separated into undergraduate and postgraduate, and may be streamed according to your chosen discipline.

English Placement Test

Our English Placement Test (EPT) is ideal for you if you do not have an IELTS or other approved international test score. You can sit this test free-of-charge at our Hawthorn campus or online at any Swinburne representative office.

The test measures all skills and will take approximately one hour to complete. Based on your results, we will recommend the number of weeks you will need to complete to enter your chosen course.

Swinburne reserves the right to conduct a placement test for all students in the first week of your study to assess your level of English. If your results show that you need more or fewer weeks than originally offered, this may affect the duration of your English course and, in turn, affect timely entry into your future courses.

Direct entry to Swinburne

Students who successfully complete English for Academic Purposes to the required level can progress directly to their Swinburne course. Entry is subject to achieving the required results and all other conditions. English language requirements and other prerequisites for individual courses can vary.

The Advanced Manufacturing and Design Centre

Multimillion-dollar facilities

Major refurbishments and new infrastructure are a feature at our Hawthorn campus. The development of new buildings, renovation of existing buildings and beautiful landscaping enhance the study environment and education experience we offer our students.

Cutting-edge facilities include:

• The $100 million Advanced Manufacturing and Design Centre (AMDC), which provides an innovative teaching, learning and research environment for design, business, engineering and information technology students. The AMDC is also the home of the Swinburne Design Factory Melbourne, the first ‘living lab’ dedicated to design at an Australian university.

• The Advanced Technologies Centre, which features state-of-the-art laboratories and research and education facilities. It includes a 550-seat retractable lecture theatre, 40 high-tech learning spaces and the Smart Structures laboratory – the only one of its kind in Australia – for leading-edge research in structural engineering.

• The George Building, a multi-storey student services hub, which houses study areas, a faith/prayer room and a student games room.

About Melbourne

Smart, captivating, multicultural, unique, fun, individual and welcoming, Melbourne is the capital city of Victoria and home to four million people.

In 2017, Melbourne was again named the world’s most liveable city by The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Survey for the seventh consecutive year. It is also known as Australia’s cultural, culinary and sporting capital.

Additionally, a mild climate, magnificent architecture, an extensive public transport network and beautiful parks and public spaces make living in Melbourne a great experience.

Swinburne’s campus is located in Hawthorn, a trendy inner-city suburb of Melbourne.

TOP 10 THINGS to do in Melbourne

Go to festivals, watch a show or musical

Melbourne offers an array of entertainment. Some local festivals that have garnered the world’s attention are the Melbourne Comedy Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival and the Melbourne Writers’ Festival. The city also hosts many top-tier shows and musicals throughout the year.

Explore Victoria’s landmarks, museums and parks

Melbourne has many heritage landmarks, interesting museums and lush green parks. Shaped like the Eiffel Tower, the Arts Centre is the focal point of Melbourne’s cultural scene; the Royal Botanic Gardens is home to over 50,000 plant species; and the Hellenic Museum is a fabulous showcase of Greek history in Melbourne... and this is just the tip of the iceberg!

See native Australian animals

Visit Healesville Sanctuary to come face-to-face with kangaroos, wombats and other native animals. Drive to Phillip Island to cuddle koalas and watch fairy penguins make their way home as the sun sets.

Drink coffee

Coffee is part of every Melbournian’s staple diet. In addition to the city centre, suburbs like St Kilda, Richmond, Fitzroy and South Melbourne are worth visiting to find your favourite blend. Close to Swinburne, Axil Coffee Roasters also regularly makes the list for Melbourne’s best coffee spots.

Shop at boutiques, craft markets and malls

Ask any Australian for the best place to go shopping in the country and you’ll undoubtedly hear them say Melbourne. Shopping in Melbourne draws international visitors that enjoy browsing the various shops, boutiques and markets that the city is famous for. There is an array of local designers and major international brands to cater to every taste, from high-end to high-street.

Explore Melbourne’s laneways and arcades

Al fresco eateries and hole-in-the-wall bars all nestle side by side in laneways threading the city centre, giving Melbourne that European feel that it is so well known for. Many of Melbourne’s arcades – like the Block Arcade – have achieved heritage status and are home to boutique shops selling unique wares and work by local designers.

Check out Melbourne’s street art

Melbourne is known as one of the world’s best street art capitals; it’s a city that recognises the power of expression through art and provides public spaces for artists to display their work. Come across larger-than-life murals and loud-and-proud pop culture or political art as you make your way through various art hotspots in the city, including Hosier Lane, Croft Alley and AC/DC Lane.

Get into the sporting spirit!

From test cricket, the Australian Open tennis and Grand Prix motor racing to the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach and the Spring Racing Carnival, Melbourne takes the crown as the world’s sporting capital, as adjudged by the 2016 SportsBusiness Awards. The city also has a mild obsession with Aussie Rules Footy, a hybrid sport of rugby, soccer and an indigenous Australian ballgame.

Explore our backyard

Victoria is filled with fantastic sights and attractions, such as the Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles; famous surf beaches; Phillip Island (home of the Penguin Parade); the untamed wilderness of Wilsons Promontory; the historical goldfields of Ballarat and Bendigo; renowned wineries in the Yarra Valley and skiing opportunities at the Victorian snowfields. Melbourne is a gateway to Australia – you can take the overnight ferry to Tasmania or take a train, bus or plane to other destinations around the country.

I chose Swinburne because it is a leader in the field of IT in Australia. It is because of my education at Swinburne that I was able to be one of nine participants (out of 200!) chosen for an internship organised by Tin Alley beta, a tech start-up internship program. Today I am a fully employed software engineer at Xcheque, the tech start-up at which I completed my internship.

From the first week, I was tasked with transforming a crash course in law into a coherent argument and it was a fantastic experience after just coming out of high school. It’s fun being able to relate your course to the everyday world – Swinburne focuses more on industry experience than any other university.

I switched majors to do what I enjoy the most (maths!) but Swinburne has allowed me to stay involved in the visual neuroscience lab, where I completed an internship. We got to present our research at conferences and are currently working on new research and papers towards publication. I don’t think I would have had such opportunities presented to me at other universities – I chose Swinburne as experience can never be replaced by academic ranking.

Other INFORMATION

Overseas student health cover

All student visa holders must have overseas student health cover (OSHC) for the duration of their study.

Swinburne will arrange your visa-length OSHC membership with our preferred provider. The OSHC fee will be included with your deposit indicated in your letter of offer.

Visa-length OSHC membership is a once-only payment that provides rate protection for the duration of the visa. This means that even if OSHC fees increase during the duration of your visa, you do not have to pay any increase.

If you need to extend your OSHC (for example, if you fail some units and need to extend your stay in Australia to complete your course), it is your responsibility to do this directly with the OSHC provider. Additional fees will be charged at time of renewal.

Exceptions apply to Norwegian students insured under the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme (NIS) and Swedish students with health insurance provided by CSN International (the Swedish National Board of Student Aid). Please include evidence with your application if you are covered under one of these programs.

Visit www.swinburne.edu.au/study/international/offer/overseas-student-health-cover

Students with families

If you plan to bring your family to Australia, check if any restrictions apply by contacting the Department of Immigration and Border Protection or the Australian diplomatic mission in your country. You will also need to hold OSHC membership for your family.

Visit www.swinburne.edu.au/study/international/plan-arrival/family

ChildrenIf you have children between five and 15 years of age who you plan to bring to Australia, you must enrol them in school. Full fees are payable at both government and non-government schools.

Visit www.education.vic.gov.au to find a complete list of Victorian primary and secondary schools. Information about fees, applications and enrolment for government, primary and secondary schools may be found online at www.study.vic.gov.au

Applications to non-government schools must be made directly to the school of your choice.

Note: Your student visa assessment criteria may change if your family is accompanying you to Australia.

Your rights and responsibilities

The Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act regulates the education and training sector’s involvement with overseas students studying in Australia on student visas.

Visit www.studyinaustralia.gov.au/global for more information.

Restrictions may apply if you wish to change your enrolment. Visit www.swinburne.edu.au/how-to-enrol for enrolment help and support.

Visit www.swinburne.edu.au/international-refunds to read Swinburne’s refund provisions, which are outlined in the offer acceptance form.

Applying for credit transfer

What is credit transfer?Credit transfer is exemption from certain course requirements in recognition for previous study and/or experience. The term ‘credit’ is used interchangeably with ‘Recognition of Prior Learning’, ‘advanced standing’ and/or ‘status’ in Australian universities.

How to apply for credit transferYou can apply for credit transfer by submitting a course or unit (subject) syllabus or other evidence of your skills with your application. You must also indicate on your application form that you are applying for credit transfer.

If you are applying for credit transfer for a design course, you may need to submit a portfolio.

If your application for credit transfer is successful, your letter of offer will state the updated course duration and the amount of credit for which you have been assessed. If you do not apply for credit transfer when you submit your application, you can do so within the first week of commencing your course. Applications for credit transfer made after this time may not be approved.

Applying for your student visa

You will need to obtain an Overseas Student Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from Swinburne to complete your student visa application. Your CoE must accompany your application.

Visit www.border.gov.au for more information.

Students under 18

If you are under 18 years of age, your parents must nominate a guardian who lives in Australia before you can be considered for a student visa. Your guardian must be over 21 years old, related to you and of good character.

If you do not have an appropriate guardian with whom you may live in Australia, you will need to engage a Swinburne-approved care provider. This arrangement will include accommodation restrictions and places may be limited depending on the availability of suitable accommodation options.

Note: Some courses are not available to students who are under 18 years of age.
