Everyone will be aware of the spectacular beauty of Fraser Island, part of the Great Sandy National Park. You have probably heard less about the other part of the Great Sandy National Park, the Cooloola Recreation Area. This region, referred to as the “sister sandmass” of Fraser Island, covers 62,000 ha on the mainland, between Noosa and Rainbow Beach. It shares many features with Fraser Island, but is much more easily accessed. The Cooloola Recreation Area consists of an ancient dune “chronosequence”, encompassing multiple environments, and multiple plant communities, ranging from sclerophyll woodland to rainforest, to nutrient-poor dry or wet heath, including the head- waters of the Noosa River. This presentation will describe this beautiful area, with a focus on the varied flora. Guest Speaker: Linda Tabe. ‘My research career began with a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Adelaide, followed by a 4-year post- doctoral fellowship at the University of Warwick, UK; then 2 years at the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research, Italy. I returned briefly to the University of Adelaide Biochemistry Department before settling into 25 years in plant molecular biology and crop physiology at the then Division of Plant Industry, CSIRO, in Canberra. I have always had a close affinity with plants. When I was about 12, my parents allowed me to plant, in our back yard, a Eucalypt seedling I dug up from the side of the road on a trip to Victoria. In retrospect, I realise it was probably E. regnans, perhaps not the best choice for the suburbs. My parents came to regret their magnanimity, and had the burgeoning forest giant removed, at considerable expense, about 20 years later. I love the bush, and have greatly enjoyed learning more about it from the wonderful brains trust of ANPS Canberra.’ Linda. Linda is a member of ANPS and is our Plant Sale Co-ordinator. Ed. New ANPS Members Welcome to: ❀ Karen Everest ❀ Bronwyn Blake Canberra Nature Park Draft Reserve Management Plan. This Document outlines the planned management of the 37 nature reserves located throughout Canberra. You have until 16 December to comment on the proposed management of Canberra's Nature Park or any of the reserves, or parts of a reserve. You can lodge your comments via the website - go to www.yoursay.act.gov.au/act-parks/canberra-nature-park ANBG exhibitions Daily, 9.30 am to 4.30 pm, Visitor Centre Gallery Schools Photographic competition 30 October – 17 November. Open Gardens Open Gardens Canberra’s spring season includes one garden with some Australian native components. ‘Terroux’, 88 Rockford Road, Wallaroo 16-17 November, 10am - 4pm This is a very extensive garden/property with dams and a large dry creek bed with Australian native plants. Cost: $8 or free to Open Gardens Canberra members. Congratulating 25 Years of FoG It’s been 25 years since the Friends of Grasslands (FoG) launch on 12 Nov 1994. FoG is a community group dedicated to conservation of natural temperate grassy ecosystems in south-eastern Australia. FoG advocates, educates and advises on matters to do with the conservation of grassy ecosystems, and carries out surveys and other on-ground work. Its members include professional scientists, landowners, land managers and interested members of the public. http://www.fog.org.au/ Members Activities Members’ Meeting Speaker organiser Bill Willis has volunteered to be our new organiser. * If you would like to be part of a speaker organising team please contact Bill (0407 268 797, [email protected] * Weed Swap Co-ordinator: Rosemary Blemings [email protected],(6258 4724. Weed Swap 2019 Weekend 2-3 November Locations: Parkwood at West Belconnen and Corkhills at Symonston. ‘Thank you to the squad of members and Landcarers who found time to help Jan and me run the Weed Swap events this weeekend. We were short on volunteer numbers but as enthusiastic as ever about promoting the values of Australian native species for Canberra gardens. Greg Quinn printed thousands of labels: one for each plant. Gardeners have the ANPS labels’ details to guide the planting and care of plants provided by Iris and Alison, Damian, Annabelle and Anthony and Annie. Harley Baker and Marty Bajt represented the ACT Parks and Conservation Service by providing hours of on site and preparation support. Several hundred people hear about the Weed Swap each time via social and other ACT-wide media. Weed Swap spreads the word to new people – Australian natives are the way to go in the Regions’s extreme gardening conditions.’ Rosemary Blemings

ANPS Plant Sale Our Plant Sale Coordinator is Linda Tabe Contact: [email protected] Spring Plant Sale, Saturday 19 October

Plant Sale Lost and Found There were two small pots of Leucophyta brownii left beside the Information Tent after everything had been cleared away. If they are yours, please email [email protected].

Salute to the Sale Volunteers! ‘Our Spring Sale went off without a hitch. On behalf of the Society I would like to say a huge thank you to all the volunteers, and to the growers, for making the sale set-up and execution so smooth and efficient. Fifty five people put their shoulders to the wheel on the Friday, and the plants were quickly sorted and transferred onto the sale deck with impressive accuracy. The row checkers put to rights any minor issues, the quality checkers weeded out the few rogues, and the overall result was a lovely, orderly display of beautiful, healthy plants, enhanced by the colourful photo labels. The usual feeding frenzy followed admission of the public at 8:30am on Saturday. Despite the dry conditions, there was an enormous queue at the gate by opening time, the word being spread through our website, email list, Facebook, and the street signs. Thank you to the people who do those essential jobs! The checkout crews were quickly under siege, and the credit card machines were smoking, as 11,945 plants were sold for a total of $84,556 by the 41 volunteers. The end of the payment queue reached all the way through the middle of the sale rows and past a stunned Rosemary, at the entrance, at one stage. The checkout crews worked flat out to keep things moving, and the last of the queue finally dissolved at about 10:30, with few plants remaining by 11:30am. Sale of plants contributed by the ANPS Propagation Group raised $7,462 for the Society, and $15,419 was raised by commission on the sale of growers’ plants. All expenses have yet to be settled, but the estimated return to the Society is just over $20,000. Another excellent event – thank you to all involved!! Linda Tabe, Plant Sale Coordinator.

Special Notice - Sale Book Sales at Members Meetings For many years we have been selling over a hundred titles at our monthly members meetings. We have decided to substantially scale down the range of books we sell. To reduce stock we will be marking down most of our range from the coming members meeting onwards. Initially we plan to continue selling a small range of local plant books and these will not be discounted below our current low prices. This is a great opportunity to buy Christmas presents at super low prices. Come and have a look and buy! Propagation General ANPS propagation queries: Nola McKeon at [email protected], (0447 522 735.
