congratulations on the 40th Annual Friends of Erma Bombeck Authors Luncheon

Dear Friends,

Thank you for joining us today in celebration of our 40th Annual Authors Luncheon. We are delighted to continue this time-honored tradition of gathering together with best-selling authors over a shared love of reading in benefit of kidney health, started by Erma Bombeck and friends. We thank you for your help in raising nearly twelve million dollars since the first luncheon in 1980, and benefiting efforts to help prevent kidney disease and support educational, research and service programs in Arizona.

Thank you to our patrons, donors, volunteers and guests for your generous support. You make this day possible and your contributions make life better for Arizona kidney patients and their families.

We thank our fellow Arizona Women’s Board Members, the Founding Board Members, and the women who continue to serve as Sustaining Members for your service and commitment to our mission work. Our great appreciation to Adriana Trigiani for being our Luncheon Emcee once again, helping us to create a memorable afternoon filled with smiles and laughter.

Enjoy the event, our authors, and your friends!

Cheers,

The mission of the Arizona Women’s Board is commitment to prevent kidney disease through awareness, education and research and to improve the quality of life for Arizonans with kidney disease.

The Arizona Women’s Board has raised nearly $12 million since the first Authors Luncheon in 1980. Net proceeds from last year’s luncheon enabled the Arizona Women’s Board to grant more than $500,000 to five kidney health programs in Arizona. The Arizona Women’s Board greatly appreciates the generosity and support of our Authors Luncheon patrons, donors, volunteers and community that results in funds to the following organizations and programs directly aligned with our kidney health mission.

National Kidney Foundation of Arizona – Path to Wellness

The Path to Wellness program and mobile van provides wellness screenings in geographically hard-to-reach communities to populations that are at high risk of developing kidney disease. The van contains lab equipment and supplies, educational materials, translation services, and community outreach toolkits. The van can be used for kidney wellness workshops.

Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation – Nephrology Patient Assistance

The Patient Assistance fund supports pediatric kidney patients and their families who are experiencing hardships while children are undergoing kidney treatment. The fund supports expenses for rent, utilities, phone, food and transportation, and is used to celebrate patients adhering to treatment protocols and following dialysis and kidney transplants. The fund purchased pediatric blood pressure cuffs for monitoring patients at home between appointments.

St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation – Transplant Dietary Program

The Transplant Dietary Program provides kidney transplant patients at St. Joseph’s Hospital with proper nutritional counseling before and after their transplant surgery. Grant funds provide full-time kidney transplant dietician services.

TGen Foundation – Pediatric Kidney Cancer Urinary Biomarkers

The Multi-Omic Study of Urinary Biomarkers continues the TGEN research funded last year, taking it to the next step. The biomarker research tests for DNA degradation patterns in pediatric patients’ urine allows health practitioners to identify advancing disease in pediatric patients much earlier and less invasively. The biomarker test serves as an early indicator of the chance of children developing kidney cancer, and as an alternative to tumor biopsies.

Valleywise Health Foundation (formerly Maricopa Health Foundation) – Food Pharmacy

The Food Pharmacy Project provides nutritional food boxes to underserved patient populations with diabetes that are at high risk of developing advanced stage kidney disease. Diabetic patients receive the food boxes at Valleywise Health primary care clinics, attend bi-monthly health check-ups and participate in educational meal planning to ensure they have access to critical nutrition. The grant provides for a research medical assistant and bio-statistician to analyze project data.

The members of the Arizona Women’s Board refer to themselves as Lizzies, an affectionate term that evolved from the use of the lizard as their symbol. The lizard has the world’s most efficient kidneys, and symbolizes the desire for healthy kidneys for all individuals.

The Diane & Bruce Halle Foundation is pleased to support

the Arizona Women’s Board to continue to make a

difference in the lives of patients with kidney disease.

BRUCE CAMERONW. A Dog’s Promise

A veteran guest on countless radio and television programs, number one New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, W. Bruce Cameron is a clever and engaging writer with a talent for offering uplifting and often laugh-out-loud novels that speak to the hearts of adults and young adults alike. He is the author of numerous dog-centric novels, including the wildly popular A Dog’s Purpose which hit the big screen in January 2017 from Universal, A Dog’s Way Home, The Dogs of Christmas, The Dog Master, and The Puppy Tales series for young readers set in the ADP universe. With their unique insight into the canine spirit, Cameron’s novels inspire readers to see the world through another point of view. A Dog’s Promise continues the story of Bailey, the dog whose journey started in A Dog’s Purpose and continued in A Dog’s Journey. This time, Bailey is joined by Lacey, another very special dog, who helps Bailey fulfill his promise over the course of several lives. This charming, wise canine soul brings joy, laughter and comfort as he unites a family fractured by life’s inevitable obstacles. The love and loyalty of these two memorable dogs shows us the incredible power of hope, truth, and the unending devotion of family. W. Bruce Cameron began his career writing a family newspaper humor column, eventually becoming an internationally syndicated columnist.

His column, “8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter” became a New York Times bestselling book and a People’s Choice Award Winning Series on ABC. He and his wife Cathryn Michon co-wrote the screenplay for Sony’s film adaptation of A Dog’s Way Home (January, 2019), and the Amblin/Universal film adaptation of the 2012 sequel to A Dog’s Purpose 2: A Dog’s Journey (May, 2019). Cameron is the two-time winner of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists Award for best humor columnist and the winner of the 2006 Robert Benchley Award.

ATHY GUISEWITECFifty Things That Aren’t My Fault

Cathy Guisewite is the creator of the “Cathy” comic strip that ran in nearly 1,400 newspapers for thirty-four years. The strip focused on a career woman facing the issues and challenges of eating, work, relationships and having a mother–or as the character put it on one strip, “the four basic guilt groups.” The strip earned Guisewite the National Cartoonist Society Reuben Award, and an Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program for the television special, Cathy. Fifty Things That Aren’t My Fault is a debut for Guisewite in her new role as a narrative writer and an eagerly awaited return to the public eye for the legions of devoted fans of her classic comic strip. In Fifty Things That Aren’t My Fault, Guisewite pins to the page what so many of us are feeling, and offers encouragement that together we can actually make it through. Sure, there’s dismay over her changing body in pieces like “In Loving Memory of the Legs I Used to Hate,” regret over her imperfect parenting of her daughter (“It Took a Village”), as well as worries about the brutal new pressures faced by her daughter’s generation of young women, despite all the breakthroughs of Guisewite’s generation that were supposed to make things easier for them (“Barbie Mom” and “The Build-a-Boob Workshop”). But, there’s also deep joy and confidence in the future, and appreciation of the profound bonds between the generations (“Mother’s Soup” and “Unexpired Love”). Finally, in “Gratitude,” Guisewite expresses her thanks to all the

women she’s never met who let her know she wasn’t the only one who felt the way she did as she sat in a room by herself drawing a comic strip. “I’m deeply thankful,” she writes, “for women’s endless, inspiring examples, for how women lift each other up, for the compassion and encouragement and support that will help all of us take on everything that’s ahead.” Guisewite was born in Dayton, Ohio, raised in Midland, Michigan, and attended the University of Michigan where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English. Cathy lives in California with her handsome and charming dog, Leo.

KStories That Stick

Kindra Hall is President and Chief Storytelling Officer at Stellar Collective, a consulting firm focused on the strategic application of storytelling to today’s communication challenges. Kindra is one of the most sought after keynote speakers trusted by global brands to deliver presentations and training sessions that inspire teams and individuals to better communicate the value of their company, their products and their individuality through strategic storytelling. As the owner of this internationally recognized public speaking business, Kindra has seen first hand how learning simple storytelling techniques can increase the effectiveness of entrepreneurs and sales teams and help leaders better communicate and motivate employees. Every person has a gap in their business that they want to fill, and the bridge for that gap is a good story. Her client list includes Facebook, Target, Hilton Hotels, Rodan + Fields, Tyson Foods and Harvard Medical School, to name a few.

In Stories That Stick, Kindra helps readers discover the unique stories within themselves and their organizations, stories that differentiate and elevate, stories they’ve been overlooking. With case studies, company profiles and anecdotes backed with original research, Kindra presents storytelling as the underutilized skill that separates the good from the best in the business. She offers specific actionable steps readers can take to find, craft and leverage the stories they already have and aren’t telling,

teaching them that the moment they take control of their stories, they take control of their businesses and their lives. Stories That Stick was released in October of this year and is on The Wall Street Journal’s Best Selling List (number two in business and number ten overall). What began as a storytelling assignment in fifth grade grew into a passion for telling stories and a mastery for teaching others the methods and science of storytelling. Kindra is a National Champion storyteller, member of the Board of Directors of the National Storytelling Network and has her master’s degree in communications where she conducted original research studying the role of storytelling in defining and revealing organizational culture. Kindra lives in Manhattan with her husband, son and daughter. When she is not traveling around the world speaking, Kindra can be found at spin class or in Central Park with her family.

EWhat Happens in Paradise

Elin Hilderbrand has written more than twenty best-selling romance novels, as well as a couple of novellas. She was nominated for the Romantic Novel of the Year Award in 2008 for her book, Barefoot. The New York Post has called Elin Hilderbrand “The queen of summer beach read.” All of Elin’s novels are set on or near to Nantucket Island, where she has lived for twenty-six years. She draws inspiration from her local surroundings, as she writes about what she knows and sets her novels close to her own home. Elin has spoken in interviews about her memories of spending her summer vacations on Cape Cod where she would swim in the sea, dig homes for hermit crabs and collect pieces of sea glass. When she was sixteen her father was killed in a plane crash and she was forced to spend her next summer working in a factory. She vowed that she would always try to allow herself a real summer every year moving forward.

Elin’s latest novel, What Happens in Paradise was published this October. A year ago, Irene Steele had the shock of her life… her loving husband, father to their grown sons, and successful businessman was killed in a plane crash. But that wasn’t Irene’s only shattering news; he’d also been leading a double life on the island of St. John, where another woman loved him too. Now Irene and her sons are back on St. John, determined to learn the truth about the mysterious life and death of a man they thought they knew. Along the way, they are about to learn some surprising truths about their own lives, and their futures. Lush

with tropical details, romance and drama, What Happens in Paradise is another immensely satisfying page-turner from one of America’s most beloved and engaging storytellers. Elin was born in Collegeville, Pennsylvania where she grew up. She graduated from Johns Hopkins University, and spent time at The Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa where she was a teaching and writing fellow. She worked writing classified ads for a local paper before becoming a full time novelist. Elin is the mother of three tri-sport athletes, an aspiring fashionista, a dedicated jogger, world explorer, enthusiastic foodie and grateful three-year breast cancer survivor. What Happens in Paradise is her twenty-fourth novel.

CThe Paris Diversion

Chris Pavone is the New York Times bestselling author of three international thrillers: The Expats (“smart, clever suspense” –John Grisham) won both the Edgar and Anthony awards for best first novel, was translated into two dozen languages, and is being developed for film; The Accident (“couldn’t put the damn thing down”–Stephen King), another Times bestseller; and The Travelers (“Hitchcockian”–Washington Post), an IndieNext bestseller optioned for film by DreamWorks. Most recently Chris has written his fourth novel: The Paris Diversion (“thriller writing at its very best”–Jeffrey Deaver). The Paris Diversion is the second book in the Kate Moore series, with Kate now settled in Paris running a CIA Paris substation. In her New York Times Book Review, Marilyn Stasio writes, “I nominate Kate Moore, the protagonist of Chris Pavone’s sizzling thriller The Paris Diversion patron saint of working wives and mothers everywhere. At the heart of the story is the domestic drama playing out between Kate and her husband. Both characters are so realistically drawn that their quarrels sound unscripted. But Pavone takes great pains with all his characters, from the stuffed-shirt CEO who is so full of himself that he doesn’t realize he’s been kidnapped to the unhappy suicide bomber who volunteered for a mission but did not understand it involved blowing himself up.”

Chris grew up in Brooklyn and attended Cornell University. He held

editorial positions in publishing for nearly two decades, then his wife got a job in Luxembourg and the family moved abroad, where Chris raised their twin boys and started writing The Expats. He has also written a (mostly blank) book about wine, ghost-written a couple of nonfiction books and has contributed to outlets including The Telegraph, Salon, The New York Times Book Review and The New York Times Magazine. Chris lives in New York City and on the North Fork of Long Island with his family, including an Australian Labradoodle named Wally.

BFor the Good of the Game: The Inside Story of the Surprising and Dramatic Transformation of Major League Baseball Allan H. (Bud) Selig is the Commissioner Emeritus of Major League Baseball and a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Commissioner Robert Manfred, Jr. named Bud to the unprecedented position of Commissioner Emeritus on December 19, 2014. In 1998, Bud was named the ninth Commissioner of baseball by a unanimous vote of the thirty Major League Baseball club owners. Having served more than twenty-two years as the leader of the baseball industry, Bud led the way toward implementation of many of the game’s structural changes, realignment, restoration of the rulebook strike zone, introduction of the World Baseball Classic, and instant replay. The significant changes to baseball’s economic system during Bud’s tenure helped the sport achieve unparalleled competitive balance. Bud expanded the reach of the sport in numerous ways, guided the game through a considerable renaissance, and ushered in some of the most important and controversial changes in the game’s history.

In his recently published book For the Good of the Game, Bud takes the reader through the most difficult decisions and moments of his career. Part baseball story, part business saga and part memoir, For the Good of the Game chronicles Bud’s career, takes fans inside locker rooms and board rooms and offers an intimate, fascinating account of the

frequently messy process involved in transforming an American institution. Featuring an all-star lineup of the biggest names from the past forty years of baseball, Bud recalls the vital games, private moments, and tense conversations he’s shared with Hall of Fame players and managers and the contentious calls he has made. He also speaks candidly about the steroid scandal that threatened to destroy the game. Bud is a major supporter of his alma mater, University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the O’Connor Distinguished Professor of Sports in America at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. Bud and his wife Sue have three daughters, five granddaughters and one great-grandson.

The life force of Erma Bombeck was always optimism and hope. It inspired her throughout her family life and her career. It sustained her in later years when she was ill.

She was convinced that out there somewhere were people so selfless, and families so compassionate, they would commit to the ultimate act of love – the gift of life.

“The real heroes and heroines are the patients who are hanging tough and the donors who are faced with hard decisions and give humanity a good name. We are about preserving life. It is indeed a gift.” ~Erma Bombeck

Erma had hoped to be able to do even more.

Today, the members of the Arizona Women’s Board, the authors who join them, and the incomparable Adriana Trigiani continue Erma’s legacy. We honor them for their dedication to patient care, donor awareness, and “preserving life.”

Thank you for surpassing Erma’s hope.

40 ofSTORIES IMPACT

A Legacy of Impact

In celebration of its 40th milestone event, Authors Luncheon 2019, the Arizona Women’s Board embarked on a year long campaign to collect stories of 40 individuals and families impacted by kidney

disease. Inspired by the late Glenna Shapiro, Honorary Founding Member of the Arizona Women’s Board and Executive Director of the Arizona Kidney Foundation* for 28 years, 40 Stories of Impact continues her commitment to keeping individuals affected by kidney disease central to the mission and meaning

of our philanthropic work.

For years, as Executive Director of the Kidney Foundation, Glenna worked directly with patients and their families, whatever their needs. She would make calls to find rides to dialysis, locate a new

apartment, connect them with community resources, and always offer education and compassion while she successfully raised funds to fulfil the foundation's mission of improving their health and quality of

life. Those who knew her confess they were never able to tell Glenna "no" when she requested a donation, because the patient stories became part of her story. Patients and their families were always the motivation

for her work. Today, with the printed collection, 40 Stories of Impact, we honor Glenna’s profound commitment to patient care, her community leadership, and powerful storytelling.

Please accept our appreciation for supporting forty Authors Luncheons and nearly $12 million in

fundraising by reading and sharing 40 Stories of Impact. We hope this glimpse into the lives of those impacted by kidney disease will encourage you to continue with us as we write a brighter future for

Arizona kidney patients.

We wish you kidney health.

Thank you Arizona Women’s Board for your support to help spread the word. Living kidney donations hold the greatest potential for saving the lives of patients suffering with end-stage kidney disease.

“Words cannot describe my gratitude.”

Jim Ensslin (right) suffered with kidney disease for 17 years before a kidney transplant at St. Joseph’s Norton Thoracic Institute. The donor was a complete stranger, Kate Burris (left), a 27-year-old nurse who shared one of her kidneys to save the life of another.

Katie Grannan, far left, was only 10 when doctors detected a rare autoimmune disease that was destroying her kidneys. The disease threatened her life by age 27, but thanks to a kidney donation from a family friend, Ann Sperry (on right), and a successful transplant at St. Joseph’s Norton Thoracic Institute, Katie is working, mountain biking and living her life to the fullest every day. “I am so grateful to have my life back,” says Katie. “I wouldn’t be here without Ann and St. Joseph’s!”

St. Joseph’s is home to Norton Thoracic Institute, offering world-class care for kidney, lung, liver, heart, and esophageal disease, including lifesaving organ transplantation.

Financial donations accelerate advances in patient care, enhancements in medical education and breakthroughs in research.

Nothing is more rewarding than sharing humankindness! Make a lifesaving gift today.

With one simple action, you can spark something greater than yourself. That’s what Bob James did back in 1962 when he founded Raymond James. He believed a business had a responsibility to generate more than profits. Today, we continue his legacy in words and actions as we seek to go forward by giving back. LIFE WELL PLANNED.

In Memoriam

MARY WALCH “MIM I” BERRY

1927 – 2018

Founding Member of the Arizona Women’s Board

Helping people in need in the community was a guiding principle instilled in Mimi by her

family. Soon after moving to Arizona in 1960 with her husband Henry and their five children,

Mimi became an active member of the Phoenix community. She was a founding member of

the Women’s Board of the Arizona Kidney Foundation (now the Arizona Women’s Board),

chairman and 36-year member of the Phoenix Art Museum’s Collectors Study Club, president

and Honorary Lifetime Member of Desert Foundation Auxiliary, a board member of the Arizona

Cancer Center, and a member of the Delta Gamma Alumni Association. She also supported

Henry’s activities as a founding member of both the Phoenix Art Museum’s Men’s Art Council

and the COMPAS charitable organization.

People loved being in Mimi’s company because of her reassuring warmth,

gentle manner and ability to see the humor in daily life. Time with Mimi was

always time well-spent. She is missed.

1973 - Women’s Advisory Board of the Arizona Kidney Foundation is organized.

Mimi Berry with her daughter-in-law Leslie Berry, Chairman, Authors Luncheon 2007 and Sustaining Member, Arizona Women’s Board
