The Monash Children’s Hospital is honoured and humbled to have Lady Marigold Southey AC as its Founding Patron to inspire and influence the community of Victoria to support the hospital.

Lady Southey has dedicated a lifetime of service to the community of Victoria and her commitment to healthcare, medical research and the arts was recognised in 2006 when she was awarded a Companion of the Order of Australia. Lady Southey (left) and family members Lindy

and Matthew Shelmerdine visit the children’s wards and speak with parents and families. We can make a difference together with supporters like you.

She has served as - Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria from (2001-2006), President of Philanthropy Australia from (2000-2006), President of the St Catherine’s School Foundation, and President of the Myer Foundation (2004).

“Lady Southey’s passion and encouragement will inspire Monash Children’s Hospital to build new relationships and develop vital philanthropy in support of children’s healthcare,” said Monash Health Board Chair, Barbara Yeoh. While Lady Southey has many accolades, above all else she is a devoted mother and grandmother. This was evidenced by the three generations of her family attending the celebration of the turning of the sod on 15 July 2014.

She has inspired many people with her leadership, dignity and

unwavering commitment to the community.

Empowering you to make a difference

Hello and welcome to the Spring edition of Foundation for Health.

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt in my many years of working in healthcare, it’s that everyone can make a difference. Since my early years working as a nurse in New Zealand, to managing Victoria’s largest health service as the Chief Executive of Monash Health, I have seen countless examples of truly inspiring people who gave so that others may benefit. I have also seen the tremendous difference your generosity makes on the lives of patients and their families.

Improving healthcare is not something that happens just within hospitals. It happens within communities, families and people like you.

We are continually looking at innovative new models of care. However, your support helps us to use new treatment methods from philanthropically funded research, new medical technology, and advance healthcare learning with philanthropically funded scholarships.

On behalf of everyone at Monash Health, including our staff, patients and families, I’d like to give you our heartfelt thanks for your donations in supporting great healthcare in our community.

Small or large, every donation makes a difference. Be it from a child’s pocket money, in-kind presents at your celebration or in memory of someone special like George on page 8. Thank you for making a real difference with us. Shelly Park Chief Executive, Monash Health

WORK BEGINS ON THE NEW MONASH CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

On Tuesday 15 July 2014 Monash Children’s Hospital celebrated the ‘Turning of the Sod’.

Supporters and donors of Monash Children’s Hospital were amongst the crowd that attended the historic Victorian event to officially commemorate the beginning of building works on the new hospital. The event held at Monash Medical Centre in Clayton, marked a momentous milestone and significant step forward in providing better healthcare for the children of Victoria.

Monash Health was pleased to welcome the Honourable Dr Denis Napthine MP, Premier of Victoria, the Honourable David Davis MP, Minister for Health and Ageing and the Honourable Mary Wooldridge MP, Minister for Mental Health, Community Services, Disability Services and Reform to the event.

Sonny days

Heidi Millier, mother of one-year-old Sonny, also spoke to guests about the importance of a new hospital and how grateful her family is for the care Sonny received.

Sonny was born premature and was diagnosed with an abnormally severe case of Hyaline Membrane Disease (HMD) and experienced serious problems with his lungs and heart.

“I used to look at families going through things

like this and think ‘how do they do it?’ Those

people that spend most of their lives in hospital.

And then 15 months ago, we became one of those

families,” said Heidi.

“It’s exciting to be part of a dream coming true,” said

Lady Southey.

Today, Sonny and his family are fighting the odds and refusing to give in. Sonny spends his days attached to an oxygen tank and requires 24 hour care and continues to be treated at Monash Children’s Hospital.

“Words cannot explain how much we appreciate, respect and are forever grateful to the Monash Children’s Hospital,” Heidi said.

Guest of honour

Monash Health was also privileged to have Lady Marigold Southey AC, Founding Patron of our Monash Children’s Hospital and former Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria was the guest of honour. She was delighted to meet some current Monash Children’s Hospital patients who made their way from the wards with their families to join in the celebration.

Chief Executive Shelly Park said “Major capital projects such as these require our leaders to be visionary; to see into the needs of the community in the future and to have the courage to make things happen.

YOU CAN SUPPORT OUR NEW PARENTING ROOM

Any new parent will tell you there are many moments of uncertainty that follow the birth of your first child as you try to provide them with the best care possible.

The first time you bathe your newborn baby, breastfeed them or change their nappy are precious and unforgettable moments you can never get back and are part of the vital bonding opportunities in those first couple of days. Often these moments occur while you are still in hospital. You will remember them forever.

A parenting room is a space where new parents can learn the vital and practical skills, such as bathing and breastfeeding, in a stress-free and comfortable environment.

Monash Women’s Maternity Wards at Clayton are home to two

Parenting Rooms with one on each ward. One of these rooms was renovated last year thanks to philanthropic donations and is now a welcoming and special space for parents.

Please help Monash Women’s raise $40,000 to provide a second Parenting Room which is a nurturing and comfortable space for mums and dads to attend important educational sessions with midwives and mothercraft nurses.

This year’s Oz Comic Con in Melbourne was undoubtedly a jaw-dropping spectacular with celebrity greats and all our favourite cosplay heroes and villains. Amongst the pop-culture hustle-and-bustle, the convention, held in July 2014, saw four separate costume groups banding together to shake tins and raise funds for a children’s hospital in a galaxy not so far away.

“The Monash Children’s Hospital is very proud and thankful to have the long-time support of costume groups; Melbourne Costume Group, Mandalorian Mercs, Rebel Legion and the 501st Legion,” said Debbie Shiell, Director Monash Health Foundation.

“We wanted to get together and raise money for Scott Loxley’s ‘Storming Australia for Monash Children’s Hospital’. Scotty is currently walking around Australia in full Star Wars Stormtrooper costume, to raise money and awareness for the hospital and we were only too happy to help out,” said Mark Marcus, XO, Knightfal Squad (501st Legion).

Funds raised by participants at Run Melbourne 2014 will purchase state-of-the-art equipment to detect eye disease in premature babies. Your support as a donor can literally impact the lives of thousands of people for years to come.

A PLEDGE TO HER DAUGHTERRUN MELBOURNE 2014 TEAM GO THE DISTANCE

Sheri Johnston is an inspiring woman. On 27 July 2014 she joined 18,000 participants and ran her first half-marathon in memory of her daughter Scarlett, at the Run Melbourne charity event. Scarlett was only five weeks old when she became seriously ill and was treated at Monash Children’s Hospital before tragically passing away a few days later.

Sheri had never run more than 3km before January this year. With Scarlett as her strength and inspiration, Sheri set herself the challenge of raising $700 for Monash Children’s Hospital who provided such great care for Scarlett and her family.

Exceeding expectations

Sheri not only finished the half marathon but exceeded her own expectations and with the support of her two daughters, family and friends she raised more than $6,100 – an incredible achievement.

Sheri was part of a larger Monash Children’s Hospital’s team of 40 participants who signed up for the 5km run/walk, 10km run or half-marathon.

“I raised funds for the hospital in memory of my beautiful

daughter, Scarlett. At just five weeks old, Scarlett became very ill. The team at Monash

were incredible – they treated my family with support,

respect, patience and the best care, over Scarlett’s last

days,” said Sheri.

The dedication and commitment of all team members helped raise over $22,500, a truly remarkable effort.

The money raised will be used to purchase diagnostic equipment for Monash Children’s Hospital’s Newborn Services to help detect eye disease in premature babies. The efforts of all participants through Run Melbourne could potentially save the sight of a many babies in the future.

(Back) Professor James Cameron, John Koutsoubos and Dr Anthony White with Jim and Rita at MonashHeart, Clayton. Continued support from donors allows services like MonashHeart to provide the best care possible to the people of Victoria.

“I would like to tell others considering making a donation to please give to

your local hospital because your funds are more than just a donation. It will save

lives,” said Jim.

THE HEART OF THE MATTERYOUR DONATIONS HELP OTHERS WHEN THEY NEED IT MOST

Jim and Rita from Noble Park have been donating to MonashHeart since 2011. For them, the team that saved Rita’s life will always be held dearly.

One night in 2011, Rita awoke to chest pains and had difficulty breathing. Rita was rushed to MonashHeart at the Monash Medical Centre where she was treated for two severe main artery blockages.

Jim and Rita decided in 2011 that they wanted to give back to the team that helped them so much and have been donating ever since.

At a recent morning tea, Rita’s cardiologist, Dr Anthony White and MonashHeart Operation’s Manager John Koutsoubos, met with the couple to thank them for their on-going support.

disabled people and sick children living in Victoria. Since then, his foundation has donated in excess of $75 million to a large number of Victorian-based not-for-profit organisations including the Monash Health Foundation.

Mr Robert Neville, an elderly pensioner, was very grateful for the wonderful help both he and his late wife had received at Monash Health and decided to leave a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of his home to say thank you.

Robert left a simple message for anyone who may be considering including a bequest to Monash Health, in their Will.

“Give considerable thought to it, now is the time to think about it, not years down the track,” said Robert.

THE DIFFERENCE YOU MAKE CAN LAST FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS

In 1914 John Kronheimer left funds in his will to be donated to the Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital in Melbourne. Today, 100 years on, his kindness continues to improve the lives of others.

The amalgamation of the Queen Victorian Memorial Hospital and other services is today known as Monash Health, Victoria’s largest health service. Monash Health is honoured to be the recipient of more than 50 bequests in perpetuity so generously established over the past 100 years.

Sir Jack Brockhoff of the famous Brockhoff Biscuit company, originally established the Jack Brockhoff Foundation in 1979 with $5 million – half of his personal wealth – with the vision to assist disadvantaged and

When considering a bequest to Monash Health we ask that you discuss this with your loved ones first and seek independent legal advice.

“The support from donors like Jim and Rita allows us to continue to have access to equipment needed to provide the best care possible. From our perspective, we want donors like Jim and Rita to know that their funds continue to make a difference to people who are at their most vulnerable and when they need it the most,” said John.

FIGHTING DEPRESSIONWOOLWORTHS HELP FUND VICTORIAN FIRST RESEARCH

Depressive disorders are sadly all too common in Australia with approximately one in five adolescents experiencing an episode before the age of 18 years. Depressive disorder is the most common mental illness experienced by those who take their own lives.

Taking the initiative to tackle the issue on a local level, Woolworths were eager to support a research project at Monash Children’s Hospital that could provide improved treatment options for patients in the future.

On 12 August 2014 representatives from a number of Woolworths stores presented a cheque for an incredible $129,860 raised through a Victoria-wide fundraiser held during the month of June. This research is the first of its kind in Victoria and involves working with adolescents with Major Depressive Disorder over 18 months.

Dr Michael Gordon, Consultant Psychiatrist, Early in Life Mental Health service said it could not be overstated how grateful we all are for Woolworth’s support and what it means to us and the young patients we care for.

The generosity of Woolworths and their customers could help

change the trajectory of a young person’s life and

help heal families.

It’s when the community bands together to help each other that real change is made. Making a real difference to fighting depression - members of Woolworths show their

support for research at Monash Children’s Hospital.

Helping them to smile again - The successful campaign ran at Woolworths stores across Victoria during June 2014.

George Bravis, simple humble and passionate. A gift in a loved one’s name becomes a lasting tribute and benefits the healthcare of many others.

IN MEMORY OF LOVED ONES

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU

REMEMBERING GEORGE

HOW WE CONNECT WITH YOU AND USE YOUR INFORMATION

George Bravis was a simple, humble and passionate man with a great sense of humour and that’s how he lived his 84 years. He migrated from Greece in 1960 for a better life in Australia and was married to his beloved Maria. He was a long-time member of the Australian-Greek Elderly Citizens Club of Oakleigh, which was an important part of his life.

At the time of his passing he left behind three children and six grandchildren. He adored his grandchildren and they provided him much comfort in his final days. He loved his Sydney Swans, having a drink and his Tattslotto.

George had been in and out of hospital for the last 14 years. He had always been a fighter but had issues with his lungs, heart and type-two diabetes. Most of his days in hospital were spent at the Monash Medical Centre in Clayton. George’s daughter, Tina, said the nurses always said the nicest things about George.

“The staff would always tell me my

dad was a sweetheart. He was co-operative and always said thank you regardless of how many blood tests, x-rays, or insulin shots he had,” said Tina.

Sadly, George succumbed to renal failure in June 2014.

“Dad passed away on ward 44 South and the nurses who looked after him did so with tremendous care and dignity. They always asked us, the family, if we needed anything and they were available for us to ask questions anytime. One particular nurse, Sarah, used to give me hugs seeing me so upset and because they became familiar to us, day in day out. They made him as comfortable as they could.”

The family experience

The Bravis family’s experience at Monash Medical Centre was a positive one where George’s wellbeing was looked after by professional and caring staff.

“Monash was a big part of Dad’s and our lives and it became a quite familiar place to all of us in a sad way, but also a satisfying way too.”

“With our donation of $690 to the hospital in dad’s name, it comforts us to know that his passing will not be forgotten”.
