Hawkes Ocean Technologies (HOT) is an engineering, research and development organization that has spent fifteen years innovating bold, “leap ahead” technologies for ocean explo-ration. The company relies on Autodesk’s Inventor software to design both manned and unmanned systems, and is best known for designing and building the DeepFlight winged submersibles.
Founded by world-renowned engineer, Graham Hawkes, Hawkes Ocean Technologies’ focus has been on introducing the next generation of cost-effective, ultra-lightweight, manned submersibles, based on the Hawkes-patented concept of under-water flight. Since 1995, the Company has developed five generations of DeepFlight submersibles, including a 36,000 foot submersible (DeepFlight Challenger) for the late adventurer, Steve Fossett, (now owned by Virgin Oceanic) and culminating in the DeepFlight Super Falcon, a high performance, positively buoyant, two-seat craft that has accomplished hundreds of dives throughout the world for science and adventure expeditions.
With DeepFlight, HOT has essentially made the same transition sub-sea that the Wright Brothers did in air, moving from bal-looning to fixed wing craft. Instead of getting heavy and sinking, like all conventional submersibles, DeepFlight vehicles operate on the same principles as flight, and use wings and propulsion to
“fly” down to depth. This newfound capability of sub-sea flight has enabled unprecedented range, speed and maneuverability. Additionally, HOT has reduced the weight of its manned craft to 1/10th that of conventional submersibles, thus eradicating the need for costly dedicated mother ships, and enabling easy opera-tions from yacht, boat ramp, or beach/dock.

and then efficiently move the prototype through the design stages to prototyping and then production.”
Hawkes added,”Before Inventor, our projects required 10-15+ engineers. The Inventor software enables us to do better work, with far less people. The 3-D modeling takes all the guesswork out of our process. It let’s us see stress and complex geometries that we were previously blind to, as well as understand how the sub will operate in the deep ocean environment. Our efficiency has vastly improved now that we design all the errors out before we begin the build.”
So, where is the Company heading to next? With DeepFlight Super Falcon, Hawkes has proven the technology, as well as the market interest in sub-sea flight. The next step is to introduce larger version Super Falcons so that more people can experience sub-sea flight. In the next few years, look for Super Falcon dive experiences at resort locations around the world.
In the meantime, Hawkes will continue to operate his 2-seat Super Falcon for science and for adventure. The next adventure is the DeepFlight WhaleSongs expedition scheduled for the Big Island of Hawaii in February 2013. The mission is to equip Super Falcon with hydrophones and dive in the company of humpback whales, recording their haunting whale songs in situ. For people interested in learning more about Hawkes Ocean Technologies, or to join us on an upcoming expedition, please visit www.deep-flight.com or www.facebook/deepflight.
Graham Hawkes, an internationally renowned ocean engineer, is responsible for the design of a significant percentage of all manned (and more than 300 remote) underwater vehicles built for research or industry worldwide, including the Deep Flight series of winged submersibles. With DeepFlight, Mr. Hawkes successfully introduced five generations of ultra-lightweight, cost ef-fective vehicles, including the 36,000 foot submersible, DeepFlight Challenger, which was originally built for the late adventurer, Steve Fossett, and has since been taken over by Deep Sub LLC and Virgin Oceanic. Mr. Hawkes successfully founded several ocean engineering/exploration companies, including Hawkes Ocean Technologies, and is widely considered to be the leader in his field. He is currently offer-ing Flight School courses for individuals, as well as Underwater Flight experiences for corporate retreats, and is also building the prototype of a new generation of highly advanced Remotely Operated Vehicle. See www.deepflight.com for more information.
The Company has built DeepFlight submersibles for private cli-ents, including Sir Richard Branson and venture capitalist, Tom Perkins, and additionally operates several expeditions a year to bring people on their first sub-sea flight adventures. HOT also works with companies and organizations, such as Rolls Royce and DARPA, to innovate new solutions for deep ocean access. Larger organizations value HOT’s ability to think out of the box, and quickly and cost-effectively come up with game-changing designs.
In addition to revolutionizing manned undersea vehicles, Graham Hawkes has also been at the forefront of designing rad-ical n ew unmanned vehicles (Remote Operated Vehicles - ROVs). Hawkes-designed ROVS are in use by governments, military and industry throughout the world. Currently, HOT is building the prototype of a new generation of ROV for Bluefin Robotics. These new craft will vastly improve the capabilities of unmanned systems by eliminating the troublesome tether and tether man-agement system, and, in so doing, dramatically reduce the costs of working in the deep ocean.
Founder and CEO, Graham Hawkes, stated, “my goal from the beginning has been to engineer creative and cost-effective solu-tions for deep ocean access. Oftentimes, this means tearing up everything we know from the past, and trying out radical new designs and materials that ultimately allow us to build vehicles with far more capabilities than previously imaginable.”
Hawkes founded Hawkes Ocean Technologies in 1995, and has assembled a small group of employees who work collaboratively on the Company’s projects. The team consists of Chief Designer and Test Pilot, Graham Hawkes; Chief Mechanical Engineer, Adam Wright; Chief Scientist and Electronics Engineer, Kip Laws; Marine Operations Technician, Joshua Glovin; Senior Technician, Jay Tustin; and marketing/PR, Karen Hawkes. Autodesk has supported the Company since its founding, and its software has been critical to the Company’s success in developing its revolutionary designs.
“You cannot engineer these types of vehicles with paper and pencil,” said Karen Hawkes. “The Inventor software allows our small team of engineers to design entire vehicles in three dimen-sions, down to every single nut, bolt and screw, saving us money, time and resources.”
Chief Mechanical Engineer, Adam Wright, added, “Autodesk Inventor software made it possible to form a digital prototype

Written in the wrinkles and expressions of every face is a deeper story – a story that humans can see in each other but that is incredibly hard to capture and reproduce in animation. The reason for this is that the face has hundreds of subtle movements that are barely perceptible to the eye. Capturing each and every one of those movements, especially by hand, is incredibly time-consuming and therefore, very expensive. Yet it is also incredibly important, for within those subtle movements lies the key that unlocks our emotions as observers, which in turn deepens the meaning of the story for us. It is for that reason that finding faster ways of producing higher quality facial animation has been a long-sought-after goal for many animators.
Added to that is the fine balance between the story being told and the technology that is being used to tell it. Processing power in computers and game consoles is one of those technology consid-erations. This is not such a large issue in movies, where animation is rendered before it appears on screen. But in video games, where consoles and PCs have limited processing power, the amount and detail of facial animation is a huge consideration. If you’ve ever wondered why so many video game characters wear helmets, now you know.
Looking BackFor the past 15 years, universities, organizations and companies have continued exploring options for producing better facial ani-mation more efficiently. During that time, they’ve moved from keyframing to marker-based facial motion capture, to markerless facial motion capture. With each evolution, the final product has improved while comparative production times diminish and the task of bringing characters to life becomes easier to accomplish.
The first method to make its debut, keyframing, is similar to traditional animation in that a skilled artist poses the character to reflect each desired expression at its maximum point, allowing the computer to interpolate the animation arcs in between.
Keyframing can yield impressive results, but is a very time con-suming process. Some film studios estimate a four second shot from blocking to final (roughly 100 frames) takes around 50-70 hours to complete, depending on the complexity of the rig, the required performance, and the dialogue. As gaming characters become more realistic, it’s not impossible to imagine them taking nearly as long.
Despite its acceptance by studios, keyframing often falls short of capturing the nuances of facial expression. This shortfall has spurred an entire industry to embark on the trek to cross the “uncanny valley”, a term coined to describe when a humanlike character is close enough to real to seem human, yet robotic enough to take the viewer out of the story as they struggle to accept the character. As larger screens, next-generation game con-soles and high definition entered the mix, the failure to achieve believable characters was literally staring everyone in the face.
Along came mocap, a marker-based system with retro-reflective tracking balls attached to the facial skin or a mocap uniform for the body, a method honed by such companies as Vicon. Mocap opened a new realm of possibilities for studios and consumers alike; but behind the scenes, mocap brought new challenges to the animation process. It can take hours to apply the markers to an actor’s face; and even then, it can miss the areas most important to expression and readable phonemes, such as the eyes and pupils, the tongue, and the corners of the mouth.
Faceware Technologies: Markerless Facial MocapOne of the pioneers of next evolution – markerless facial motion capture technology – is Faceware Technologies. Founded by a group of Ph.D.s in computer visioning and animation, Faceware uses a deceptively simple method of videotaping the facial per-formance of an actor, analyzing the performance via software, and then retargeting that performance onto a 3D model using a plug-in for Autodesk software. The results are impressive and surprisingly easy to implement, and the video, rig and model are the only data required to get the process started.
The process works like this: The actor’s facial behaviors are captured with a basic or high definition, head-mounted video camera (the Faceware Head-Mounted Camera System), recorded

at the same time as voice over, or during body mocap session. To the relief of the acting talent, there is no marker setup time and no special stage required. As for directors, they can now focus on guiding the talent, rather than an army of post-production animators. The head-mounted camera in particular allows for a complete range of motion on the mocap stage.
Once captured, the video is analyzed by Faceware Analyzer™ software, which tracks facial movement frame by frame using a combination of user inputs and complex computer vision algo-rithms. Since the data is based on video information received directly from the performance, the position of the tongue, the eyes and even the pupils are analyzed to within two pixels of movement, making it far more precise than other methods. Once analyzed, the informa-tion is sent to Faceware Retargeter™, a plug-in for Autodesk Maya, 3DS Max, Motionbuilder, and Softimage.
Retargeter lets animators set key poses on the facial rig in the Autodesk software of their choosing. They can then quickly create a relationship between the actor’s performance and the desired look and feel of their character, whether it’s humanoid or non-humanoid. This unique approach defines the animated result before any keyframes are applied to the rig, establishing cleaner, iterative results right from the start. A shared pose library lets teams of animators work on the same rig, and prevents incon-sistencies from occurring. The final result is an animated facial performance of incredible realism and fidelity, but that has been created much faster than other methods.
The Faceware Professional Product Line has been utilized in the production of over 45 AAA titles, eight feature films, music videos, stage plays, and many other applications. From The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The Wolfman to Halo: Reach and Crysis 2, Faceware’s technology has left its indelible mark on the enter-tainment industry.
Facing the FutureAgain and again the industry has morphed through the changes in technology, finding new and more meaningful ways to express creativity. In facial animation, the process continues to be honed, with tools such as Faceware’s Professional Product Line and Autodesk’s animation software enabling artists to more easily
create something timeless and unique. While many artists strive to create ani-mated faces that are indiscernible from real faces, the true end game is not total realism, but believ-ability that deepens the story and draws
the audience in. With their suite of integrated tools, technology providers such as Faceware and Autodesk are poised to help ani-mators make that happen.

for innovative designs that blend business and
art. Founded in 2007 by Jonathan Mallie and his
partners, SHoP Construction was established
to provide a range of services, including virtual
design and construction (VDC) services to owners,
architects, and contractors. Over the years, Building
Information Modeling (BIM) has played a central
role in the construction management process at
SHoP Construction, enabling them to create and
explore virtual designs before building. Recently, the
firm has been able to accelerate and streamline its
processes even further by hosting live model data

who are set to move to the new venue in 2012.
Once constructed, the 350-unit B2 tower will be the
largest modular building in the world.
The Challenge
Since the B2 tower is, in large part, being
assembled in a factory, tolerances are much tighter,
requiring that complex engineering details and
interdisciplinary coordination be resolved far
sooner than in the traditional design process. To
address the unique construction requirements of
modular, SHoP Construction is coordinating an

“It’s a 180-degree shift from the traditional process,”
says Erik Churchill, project manager at SHoP

end with the detail. Modular requires that you think
the opposite way. You have to really understand
how the project is going to fit together. Due to this
requirement, the design team has to focus on the
details much earlier in the design process—such
issues would otherwise be considered further
downstream in a conventional project.”

we are investing.”
Mallie believes that having an easily accessible,
cloud-based model will be an important advantage
even after the B2 tower is completed. “Upon
completion of construction, the model will become
a living search engine for the building,” he explains.
“With the information that’s embedded in the
model, facilities management will benefit from
comprehensive VDC projects. Cloud applications
will help facilitate this evolution.”

cloud, giving all project team members access to
the most current building information. “Modular
requires next-generation collaboration,” states
Churchill. “Everyone needs to be working together
because the intersection of structure, MEP,
architecture, and design details are very unique with
a prefabricated building. With Autodesk BIM 360
Glue, the architect can easily reference structural
detail and the MEP engineer can easily reference
the architectural detail because we are sharing the
virtual model back and forth in the cloud.”
The Solution
The latest updates to the virtual model are captured
using a direct plug-in from Autodesk BIM 360 Glue
to the Revit software. The SHoP Construction team
makes those updates available to the entire project
team instantly via the cloud. Specific coordination
points and clashes on the model are highlighted
using the markup feature of Autodesk BIM 360
Glue. Revit users can open and resolve clashes
directly in their Revit environment.
“Before we were able to bring our virtual model into
the cloud, the process was very linear,” Churchill
explains. “A model would be uploaded on Friday. We
would synthesize the updates together and release
a PDF presentation of the different clashes or issues
to discuss at the weekly Wednesday collaboration
meeting.” The weekly review meeting is still held.
Only now the team is able to collaborate more
efficiently prior to that meeting by exchanging
hyperlinks of the model in Autodesk BIM 360 Glue
in real time.
Bringing Everyone Together with the Cloud
Bringing BIM to the cloud has enabled SHoP
Construction to significantly streamline a very
intensive decision-making process and avoid costly
delays. “Enhancing our BIM/VDC process by
using the cloud is facilitating real-time resolution
of highly detailed and technical issues related to
prefabrication and modular construction in a time
frame that’s expected for this project,” says Jonathan
Mallie, SHoP Construction’s managing director.
For SHoP Construction, having the virtual model
completely accessible to owners and other project
stakeholders makes the difference. “That’s the
breakthrough,” says Mallie. “The project team can
review the virtual construction in real time, as if
they are checking the weather online. They can
check the model without hosting the model on their
own machines. We are witnessing an increase in
the rate of decision making by each of the project
team members.”
“We view this project as breaking new ground,”
says Churchill. “It changes the whole game. When
people see what you are talking about, the reaction
and response time is that much faster. Autodesk
BIM 360 Glue has allowed us to increase our level of
engagement and efficiency. The cloud is providing
a more viable opportunity to visualize the design
process, which is very important for decision
making. It’s been a great augmentation tool that has
allowed us to realize a more streamlined, efficient
project delivery.”
Adding Value Post-Construction
“As the project integrator, we want to make
information accessible to the right person at the
right time,” says Churchill. “Autodesk BIM 360 Glue
is a great tool for executing that role and bringing
accessibility into the design process very early. The
management and dissemination of information
takes an incredible amount of time, but having
our model in the cloud allows us to expedite and
efficiently ensure that information gets to the
appropriate decision maker, which ultimately leads
to fewer changes.”
“The industry is focused on comprehensive project
integration,” he adds. “We think Autodesk BIM 360

to showing how cars could exit garages, again, without making multiple turns.
Once Fabre completed his vehicle turn analysis using AutoTURN, he incorporated a detailed swept path diagram into his plan view drawings of the apartment complex (see Fig 1).
Fabre wanted to go one step further, and show city officials visual simulations of cars driving into and backing out of the garages. For this, he used InVision for road design to animate, coordinate and sequence multiple vehicle simulations in the apartment complex driveway. He then exported the timed, animated sequence into a video file.
With InVision, users can export and save simulations in different multimedia video files using a number of standard codecs. Dif-ferent video codecs can be used to reduce video output files. The final recorded files can be opened and viewed on any computer using most video players.
Fabre’s next step was inventive: at the suggestion of Transoft Solu-tion’s technical support person, he uploaded the InVision video file onto YouTube. He then embedded the YouTube URL directly onto the plan view drawings, enabling anyone who clicked on the hyperlink to go onto YouTube and view the multiple vehicle simulations.
“My clients were amazed,” says Fabre. “It was probably more than what was expected, but it did the job.”
Another AutoTURN feature that Fabre found useful was the ability to have real vehicles represented in the swept path diagrams. In Fabre’s drawings, a Ford Focus is featured. “For the person studying the drawings, they have to be as realistic as possible,” says Fabre. “You can’t have a rectangle box backing up or going forward in your drawing; it’s not convincing.”
AutoTURN has an extensive vehicle library database for the U.S. and Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Users can also find specialized vehicles such as trailers, trucks and limousines. The software allows users to customize their own vehicles.
Currently Fabre is waiting for the second round of comments from the city, but feedback, so far, has been positive. Fabre expects the apartment project to go through the approval process smoothly.

When it comes to urban planning, “densification” seems to be the current mantra, as architects, civil engineers and urban planners design communities and homes that utilize a smaller real estate footprint, in an effort to promote sustainable development and reduce urban sprawl.
The city of Denver, with a population of just over 600,000, is no different from other major North American cities when it comes to promoting and implementing sustainable development practices.
Chad Fabre, a civil engineer based in Denver with 17-years experience, recently took on a site development project, involving the construction of a compact 12-unit apartment complex in a densely populated area of downtown Denver.
The specific challenge was getting city approval for the narrow drive way in the middle of the apartment complex. Each apartment unit had a
private garage, for one or two cars. There were, in particular, two apartment units where garage access was tight, and the Denver city planning department wanted proof that vehicles could easily access and exit the garages without making multiple-point turns.
For this project, Fabre needed comprehensive CAD software that could provide vehicle turn and swept path analysis of cars maneu-vering through constricted pathways. This is when Fabre turned to AutoTURN® to model and simulate realistic vehicle movements in tight turning conditions.
Fabre, who specializes in civil engineering for land development, utilities, and roadway projects, had used AutoTURN previously for modeling fire trucks turning through narrow streets, and tractor trailers and semis accessing loading docks.
AutoTURN was already loaded into Fabre’s 2012-version of AutoCAD® Civil 3D®. “I found AutoTURN pretty simple to use. Like anything, there’s always a bit of trial-and-error at first, but it’s pretty straight forward afterwards,” says Fabre. It took just over half an hour for Fabre to develop a swept path analysis of a car getting into and exiting a garage.
With AutoTURN, simulatig vehicle turn maneuvers is easy to do, using four SmartPath Tools that incorporate speed, super eleva-tion, lateral friction and turn radius algorithms. All simulation data can be exported to spreadsheets on standard document formats.
Fabre was also impressed that he was able to model a vehicle backing out, or moving in reverse. This was useful when it came

Project Summary
Founded in 1912 and headquartered in Dallas, Texas,
the Beck Group offers a full range of design and
construction services. Its Dallas-based architecture
group recently partnered with structural
engineering firm brockettedavisdrake (BDD) to
undertake an ambitious design project for one of
South Korea’s most popular Christian churches,
the SaRang Community Church in Seoul. Above
ground, the building features two curving glass and
steel towers joined by a sky bridge. But the most
striking aspect of the design is underground. The
building extends more than 120 feet below grade,
which allows the church to get the most from its
chosen site.
The Beck Group and BDD executed the project by
applying two key assets to solving the project’s
many design challenges: the expertise of its
multidisciplinary team and Building Information
Modeling (BIM). Using a BIM process, which was
based on models created with Autodesk® Revit®
Architecture and Autodesk® Revit® Structure,
allowed the team to capture, explore, and refine
their ideas using intelligent models from the
earliest stages of the conceptual design process.
“Autodesk BIM solutions helped us to explore a
level of geometric complexity in the building that
would have been otherwise impractical,” says Kelly
Cone, innovations director for Beck Group. “BIM
is not just about visualizing an innovative form; it
helps you turn great concepts into better, more
constructible designs.”
The Challenge
More than 45,000 people attend services at SaRang
Community Church each week, making it one of
the more popular “megachurches” in South Korea.
The church’s sanctuary only accommodated a
few thousand people, causing the church to rent
space in nearby facilities and broadcast services
to congregants. Church leaders decided to build a
new church, and purchased a 1.7-acre site in central
Seoul. Though small for its intended purpose,
the US$100 million site represented a rare find in
densely built Seoul.
Knowing the site would prove challenging for even
the most creative architects, the church invited five
firms to compete for the project, including Beck
Group, which has a history of designing religious
buildings. The team from Beck Group quickly
developed a proposal that maximized available
above and below ground space.
“We won the project based on an initial sketch
and project proposal that we had only a week to
develop,” says Rick del Monte, managing director
for Beck Group and lead designer on the project.
“Winning the work was only the first hurdle on
the project. We turned to BIM and Autodesk Revit
software to help explore and refine every aspect
of the concept. BIM helped us meet a number of
challenging cost, square-footage, and sustainability
requirements.”

from the earliest stages of the project. For example,
energy analysis tools in Autodesk Revit Architecture
helped the team to design more effective sunshades
well before the MEP engineer on the project
conducted a formal energy analysis.
“The energy analysis tools in Revit Architecture
allowed us to take sustainability into account
from the very beginning,” notes Chung. “On the
sunshades, the tools helped us design them with
a vertical orientation that harmonized with the
building’s exterior. Without the analysis tools,
schedule and budget considerations might have
forced us to use more traditional horizontal shades.”
The Result
The new SaRang Community Church is well on its
way to completion in 2012. Cone points to Autodesk
BIM products and the use of Revit models in the
conceptual design stage as key contributors to
the successful design. “A great concept is one that
leads to a high-quality, buildable design, accurate
construction documents, and ultimately, a great
finished building,” he says. “Our Revit model
brought the many elements of the building together,
helping us to understand and keep improving our
design choices.”

The Solution
Working with BDD’s structural engineers, the
Beck team began to flesh out the basic concept in
the context of the client’s specific needs. Above
ground height requirements and setbacks from
the street necessitated that the parking and the
main sanctuary be underground—120 feet. The
client wanted a curving, sloping exterior similar to
the one in the proposal, while ensuring that the
nontraditional shape did not limit usable space.
The design team from Beck Group dove into
the project by using their preliminary concepts
to develop a project model in Autodesk Revit
Architecture software. Using the concept massing
tools in Revit Architecture, they were able to
manipulate the basic shape of the building. As they
made changes, the model helped provide them with
insight into the effects on a variety of factors, such
as square footage by floor and building height. To
review the concepts with the client, the team used
Autodesk® 3ds Max® Design software to present
near photorealistic visualizations of the design.
“When you have a curving, sloping form,
modifications have a huge influence on a variety
of factors,” says Jay Chung, associate principal and
project manager for Beck Group. “A small change
to the slope impacts the floor area on every floor.
The massing tools in Revit Architecture helped us to
develop more than 100 iterations of the building. It’s
a faster, liberating way to work through ideas.”
Chung adds, “3ds Max Design helped keep the
clients close to the project by making it possible
for them to review more accurate visualizations.
Reviewing such realistic renderings gave them
confidence that the design was moving in the
right direction.”
Controlling Costs
The massing tools proved valuable as the team
worked to ensure the curving building did not add
unnecessary cost to the glass curtain wall covering
the exterior of the building. While the team wanted
the exterior wall to appear as a smooth curve
to the viewer, they needed to use flat glazing.
Through as many as 50 iterations of the skin and
curtain systems, the ability to link changes in Revit
software was invaluable as the team refined the
design to deliver the desired look—without adding
excess costs.
Del Monte explains, “We adjusted the shape of the
building with the massing tools until we achieved
an overall elliptical effect with flat glass. Being able
to automatically apply mass changes to the curtain
wall helped save about 1,000 hours in design time.
Using flat glass for the entire exterior probably
saved as much as $1 million on just the glazing and
mullions. Curved glass can be more complex to
work with, so there is a construction time and cost
advantage, too.”
Modeling the Structure
For their portion of the project, the team from BDD
started by developing an initial schematic framing in
AutoCAD® software. They then transitioned to BIM,
working with Autodesk Revit Structure, to provide
the Beck Group with the structural system for the
architectural model. BDD first modeled the steel
columns and concrete elements.
“The Revit Structure model provided a 3D
environment for placing the complex structural
elements throughout the building,” says Cody
Campbell, senior project manager for BDD. “We
were able to develop the structural system much
more easily than would have been possible in a 2D
environment. Simply allowing sufficient clearance
for cars in the parking garage would have been
much more difficult and time consuming in 2D.”
Understanding Performance
BIM provided the Beck Group with significant
visibility into the feel and performance of the church

ElumTools™ - A Lighting Calculation Add-in for RevitSupported Autodesk Products: Autodesk Revit Architecture
2012, Autodesk Revit Architecture 2013, Autodesk Revit MEP 2012, Autodesk Revit MEP 2013
Compatible / Supported Operating Systems: MS-Windows; XP, Vista, 7
Supported Languages: English
ElumTools™ is the first fully integrated lighting analysis Add-in for Autodesk® Revit®. The concept of ElumTools as a Revit Add-in is based on the ability to leverage content already present in the Revit model allowing the lighting software functionality to be simplified to only those tasks necessary for the accurate modeling of light. The calculation of lighting results requires surface geometry and proper-ties such as reflectance and color, luminaire locations and associated photometry. ElumTools is able to extract the surface geometry from “Rooms” or “Spaces” as defined in Revit, or if necessary, from individual elements selected using Revit commands. The Surface reflectance and color can be interpreted from the Revit materials properties and “mapped” to more suitable values if desired. Luminaire (lighting fixture) families already present in Revit are con-sumed by ElumTools and photometric file associations can be created if not already present. The final step in preparing the model gives the user the ability to assign calculation points to any surface or workplane of interest. With these steps in place, ElumTools is ready to compute the selected geometry. Revit defined Rooms or Spaces can be computed individually or as a group if they contribute light to one another. The calculation process utilizes the industry standard radiosity method and computed results are presented through a physically accurate, interactive visualization. The point-by-point illuminance results can be enabled directly in the Revit model views of your choice and all statistics are available to Revit scheduling tools for summary and inclusion in the BIM model.
FEATURES & BENEFITS
◆ Luminaire Manager – Prepare Revit lighting fixture families for accurate lighting calculations with control over source position and aiming, lumens and related light loss factors.
◆ Materials Mapping – Map Revit materials to ElumTools materials for accurate reflectance and transmittance properties.
◆ Calculation Point Placement – Place calculation point grids on Room or Space work planes, or any planar face such as walls or table tops.
◆ Calculate by Room, Space or Selected Geometry – Rooms or Spaces can be computed individually or in groups if they exchange light. Selected geometry option allows for any geometry to be computed.
◆ Interactive radiosity visualization – Calculation results are automatically presented in an interactive rendering that can be viewed in RGB or Pseudocolor in terms of luminance or illuminance.

Whether it is simple geotechnical investiga-tion, or large scale mine exploration, Carlson Geology 2013 accurately represents the subsurface geology.
Carlson Surface Mining 2013 designs the open pit and strip mine layouts. After pit and spoil polygons are named and assigned directions, 3D benched volumes are calculated based on interactive mining scenarios to create a surface mining history. Equipment productivity uses custom calendars and macros for detailed short and long range scheduling. Haul truck routes are analyzed based on length and slope to calculate productivity or truck fleet size. Other tools such as dragline range diagrams and open pit design with benches and ramps complete the module.
Carlson Underground Mining 2013 is used for mine layout and monthly updating based on surveys. Various room and pillar, longwall and panel layouts are automated for seam-less linking to actual survey of current positions. Equipment selection and calendars provide for exact scheduling and life of mine predictions and maps.
