What is SIL?
A Safety Integrity Level (SIL) is a measure of safety for a given
protective function.
Specifically, the extent to which the end user can expect the
protective function to perform, and in the case of a failure, fail
in a safe manner.
This protective function is known as the Safety Instrumented
Function (SIF).
A Safety Instrumented System (SIS) is a collection of
components (field devices and logic solver) that execute one or
more SIFs.

SIL Misconceptions
SIL Applies to Individual Devices / Connecting These Devices Makes a SIL Approved System
SIL Requires Redundancy
SIL Approval Means That a Device is Reliable
ID: ID: Autronica Fire and Security AS ■ 12
Misconception #1:
- SIL Applies to Individual Devices
IEC-61508 states that a SIL number applies to a complete function
(SIF), i.e. the field sensor, the logic solver and the final element. It is
therefore incorrect to refer to any individual item or equipment having
a safety integrity level.
An individual component can be certified for use in a particular SIL
application, but such a certificate constitutes only part of the verification
effort, since the target SIL must be verified for the complete SIF.

Misconception #2:
– SIL Requires Redundancy
SIL ratings do not require redundancy.
SIL Ensures that a safety related system adequately performs the
required safety functions under all stated conditions within a
defined period of time.
SIL assesses the risk reduction required for a tolerable level of
risk.
Redundancy is used to raise the availability of unreliable equipment.
How likely is it that the function in question will perform its
assigned task when needed?

Misconception #3:
– SIL Approval Means That a Device is Reliable
A safety-related product is designed to have a low rate of failure for its
safety function, but its total failure rate (i.e. MTBF) may not necessarily be
impressive.
A system is considered to be safe, if it is reliable in performing its safety
function. The system may fail more frequently in modes that are not
considered to be dangerous.

Autronica – The Only Fire Detection System
SIL 2 Approved by TUV
Autronica is safe and reliable. SelfVerify function tests field devices and reports system as if newly installed every day.
Autronica AutroSafe system’s SIF & SIS have been tested and approved by third party TUV - World leader in SIL assessment.

NRF-185 Pemex
It defines requirements for CEP in a very ample way and is very successful, but it does not take into consideration the SIF of the system, only the SIF of the CEP
NRF-185 only defines the third part of the example SIF that should be applied to the Safety Function

Why has Autronica had the only SIL 2 System
for over the last 10 years?
AutroSafe was designed over 50 years as a fire detection system from
the ground up according to end user requirements and in compliance
with all the worldwide F&G Normativity.
AutroSafe uses a simpler and more robust loop architecture (30% - 70%
cable savings with less probability of interference).
AutroSafe uses distributed intelligence – pushes decisions about alarm
to each individual detectors, and keeps info in controller.
Since it is a system built specifically for fire and gas detection and the
end users, the programing and training is very simplified and accessible.

For Example: A requirement for 99.99% availability for a specific component or system says that it could stop working one time…
…every month with a repair time of 4.3 minutes.
…every year with a repair time of 53 minutes.
…every 10 years with a repair time of 8.8 hours
