OLD GIRLS’ NEWS - Autumn 2010

Jessica Basey-Fisher (nee Ireland).

After leaving NHS she did her nurse training in Oxford (BA Hon.Adult Nursing) She married George who is a farmer in 1996. Lottie was born in 1999 and Will in 2002. She is living near Loddon South Norwich. Her e-mail address is: [email protected] if anyone would like to get in touch.

Mary Gibson (1943-1956).

Mary has been retired now for 12 years and her activities (member of the PCC, School Governor and Secretary of the Deanery Synod) have filled up her time to overflowing. When she retired she thought there would be time to catch up on reading – no chance. She does though find time to paint and has been on painting holidays to the Pyrenees. E-mail address: [email protected]

Penny Granger (nee Hardy) (1958-66)

After combining family duties with 25 years on the General Synod of the Church of England, Penny had what might be termed a mid-life career change. She completed an MA in Medieval English literature at UEA and went on to a PhD which she gained in 2006. Her thesis (much revised) has now been published as a book: The N-Town Play: Drama and Liturgy in Medieval East Anglia (Cambridge: D.S. Brewer, 2009). I remember UEA starting up when I was at NHS so it was interesting to be back there 40 years on.

Rachel Knight (nee Cadman) (1987-93).

Rachel is now living in Carlton Colville near Lowestoft. She has two daughters Esther Julie who is now 3 and Anna Grace who was born in December 2009. Her husband is Head of Music at a Lowestoft High School.

Karen McAulay (nee Manley) (1966-76).

Karen went to Durham followed by Exeter where she did a BA then an MA in Music before taking a postgraduate diploma in librarianship at Aberyswyth. Whilst her mother still lives just outside Norwich she has been in Glasgow over 20 years working as Music & Academic Services Librarian at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama.

She thought the school might be interested – to prove that NHS girls take lifelong learning seriously – that she has just got her PhD in Music from the University of Glasgow at the grand old age of 51, having studied part-time over 5 years alongside her full-time job. Her e-mail address is: [email protected]

Mary McCosh (nee Wiltshire) 1960-70).

There has not been much change over the last 12 months. Mary is still living in Perthshire and does a little supply teaching at the local Prep School. All four daughters are away from home now, although the youngest a medic at Edinburgh is still about in the holidays. Last June she went to Prague to watch the lacrosse World Cup where the two older daughters were playing. She was pleased to meet Hannah Preston – a very recent Old Girl who is playing lacrosse for Scotland and now reading medicine at Edinburgh.

Sarah Parkinnen (1980-90).

Sarah married Lee in 2001 and now lives in Newcastle Upon Tyne. She works part time as a GP in Durham. In her spare time she is kept busy by 4 children. Oliver age 7, Eloise age 5, William age 3 and Imogen age 1.

Georgina Pope (nee Lacey) (1983-93).

Georgina is now married to Rob and has two children Sam age 5 and Joe who is 3. She is living near Norwich and working as a Commercialisation Manager at UEA. E-mail address: [email protected]

Jane Shaw (1971-81).

After nine years as Dean of Divinity & Fellow of New College, Oxford, and Reader in Church History in the University of Oxford, Jane is moving to the USA to be Dean of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Her book on an unusual religious, millenanian community she discovered in Bedford some time ago will be published by Jonathan Cape in February 2011: “Octavia, Daughter of God: A Female Messiah and her Followers”.

Katharine Thomson (1984-90)

Katharine has been working in Cambridge for more than 10 years at the Churchill Archives Centre having trained as an archivist following her English degree. Her speciality is modern political papers: she started as one of the team cataloguing the papers of Winston Churchill (exhausting), and has since covered the political spectrum pretty thoroughly, from the papers of Enoch Powell (terrifying in their tidiness) to her current work on the archives of Neil Kinnock (madly disordered, and very, very challenging). Her e-mail address is: [email protected].

Rosemary Wilkinson (nee Cook) (1980-90).

Rosemary has lived and worked in London since graduating and married Rupert in 2008. Their son Freddie was born in May 2009. Her e-mail address is: [email protected]

REUNION – HALF A CENTURY

It was indeed half a century since some of us had met – fifty years since leaving Eaton Grove. Are we really that old?

Ten years ago we had our first large scale reunion and although we have met off and on since then, another “big one” was called for. Jane Sandland (King) and Sue Prutton (Cowell) turned their attention to the subject about a year ago and the pieces of the jigsaw all began to fall into place at about 6.00pm on the night of the OGA supper.

Throughout the evening, again on Saturday with lunch in Jane’s garden and yet again on Sunday with coffee and sandwiches with Mary Seppings (Ayton) and garden and attic tours at Blickling, the conversation and reminiscences did not flag.

For a variety of reasons some who were with us 10 years ago were not there this time, but their ears must surely have burned as they were not forgotten

About 25 OGs together with several husbands were involved and at the end of the weekend it was agreed that we mustn’t leave it another ten years when we would all be in our late 70s. Us ---- nearly 80 --- impossible!

The photograph below was taken in the Jameson Library at the Old Girls Dinner In July 2010. Eleven of our year were present and had a great time. All vowed to try and make the effort to go again next year with perhaps one or two more if they can be persuaded. Those present were Margaret Bowden (Fox), Stella Budgen (Webster), Janice Barber (Hornsby), Jean Baker (Andrews), Jane de Spretter (Rosen), Ann Brady (Bush), Brenda Cary, Veronica Finn (Smith), Nettie Pinching (Bradshaw), Jo Collier (Adeney) and Angela Corran (Freshwater).
