Welcome

Our autumn programme comes on the back of a very successful summer season. The undoubted summer highlights included the Simmer Down Festival, which was organised by Simmer Down CIC with The Drum being the key delivery partner, its attracted an estimated 25,000 diverse families audiences from near and far – firmly establishing it as one of Birmingham’s flagship festivals. The A34 Festival (supported by Big Lottery) was delivered in partnership local community groups, the programme rooted in local communities reflected and celebrated the rich diversity of Aston and Newtown. Our Summer School programme attracted hundreds of young people who participated in a range of workshops culminating in a spectacular showcase to an invited audience.

Our autumn highlights includes the official 2014 launch of Black History Month Birmingham (BHM), which this year marks the centenary of the First World War, titled Black Blood Runs Red. BHM events will mark the contribution and sacrifices made by soldiers and civilians from Britain’s former colonies. An eclectic mix of associated events and activities celebrate the struggles, achievements and contributions of UK’s African, Asian and Caribbean communities.

The Drum and mac Birmingham welcome back Afrovibes to Birmingham and as usual the biennial festival is packed with exciting and original contemporary South African theatre, dance, music, visual arts and fringe programme. Highlights include Biko’s Quest life, death and legacy of the inspirational anti-apartheid campaigner Steve Biko, Mamela featuring the experiences of the ‘born free’ generation young women. Freedom or Death is an archival

exhibition of preeminent documentary photographer Dr Vanley Burke, charts the final period of apartheid and the road towards democracy.

In addition to all the above we promise to entertain you with an array of comedians courtesy of Upfront Comedy and, for the Reggae connoisseurs we’ve assembled a spectacular line-up of the hottest artists for the Champion MC’s & Lovers Rock Singers Roll Call 2014, featuring Tippa Irie, General Levi, Top Cat, Winsom, Peter Hunnigale and Don Campbell. The internationally acclaimed reggae superstar Sanchez, returns to Birmingham after five years to headline The Drum’s 20th Anniversary Celebrations.

Our Language Theatre continues to go from strength to strength opening with a Punjabiwood romantic comedy, Romeo Fass Gaya Jugni De Pyar Wich followed by the Gujarati play, Chorna Haathma Chaavi about the trials and tribulations of married life.

We will also be celebrating Nigerian Day of Independence with a gala night topped off with the award-wining tragic-comedy, Pandora’s Box.

A specially designated programme of creative workshops and projects for Young People, as well as, outreach initiatives supplement the overall programme - ensuring that there is something for everyone. So this autumn come and join us and experience the unique range of arts and cultural activities provided by The Drum.

nThe Drum is located on the A34, just ten minutes outside Birmingham city centre on the site of former Aston Hippodrome, next to the Bartons Arms. Please contact Box Office if you need further directions.

How to Find Us By Bus From the City Centre take the number 33 or 51 bus from Lower Bull Street (next to Poundland), or the number 7, which leaves from Livery Street. Alight at Newtown Swimming Baths / Bartons Arms.

By Train The Drum is a short distance from local Birmingham stations including New Street, Moor Street and Snow Hill.

By Car From the M6: Leave at Junction 6, onto the A38(M) a short way along the A38(M), take the exit sign posted Aston / Waterlinks. The roundabout at the top exit is Park Circus. Take the second exit onto Victoria Road. Turn left onto Upper Sutton Street and then right at the bottom onto Park Lane. Before you approach the crossroads /next set of lights there is a slip road to turn left. This is Potters Lane The Drum’s car park is on your left directly as you turn left.

From Birmingham City Centre: Take the A38 towards Aston (under the tunnels/underpass towards the M6). Go over the Aston Expressway and merge left, off the A38 and onto the ring road towards Dartmouth Circus roundabout. Keep in the left-hand lane and go straight over the roundabout. As you exit off the roundabout the overhead sign is marked Thomas Street – go straight up Thomas Street and turn left at the top of the road on to Park Lane (you will see East End Foods on your right). Just before the traffic lights, take the slip road on the left, this is Potters Lane. The Drum’s car park is on your left directly as you turn left.

The Annual Birmingham Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Tribute Concert Sun 19 Sep / 7pm

This year marks the seventeenth anniversary of the death of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, revered as one of the greatest masters of Qawwali music of all time. His disciple Ansar Khalid spent years training at the feet of this great teacher and every year he brings together local and national musicians and artists to pay tribute to the late great Ustad.

Ansar Khalid will perform alongside an extraordinary ensemble of musicians to recreate Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s unforgettable Qawwali sound, along with his own compositions.

Birmingham born, classically trained Tabla player and composer Mendi Mohinder Singh brings his ground-breaking new work in celebration of The Drum’s 20th Anniversary.

Mendi’s artistic vision is to create the world’s first East-West percussion orchestra featuring Tabla Trang. United Rhythm’s unites the music of both hemispheres in an entertaining, uplifting and rhythmical spectacle that communicates the elements of Indian spirituality, uniting people with the power of music, sound and vision through a universal language.

Mendi will perform three original compositions for orchestral percussion with Birmingham Conservatoire’s Percussion Ensemble, drawing on African, South American, American and Arabic styles, written in a Western classical context.

Mendi will be collaborating with Handpan player Samantha Archer. This unique combination of Tabla and Handpan will leave you mesmerized. There will also be a very special performance with seventh Dan Samurai expert Fay Goodman, demonstrating a four hundred year old Japanese kata (choreographed martial art).

Celebrated as one of reggae’s supreme vocalists, Sanchez has released over twenty eight albums and with numerous chart topping hits, he has been consistently awarded Singer of the Year and Song of the Year titles. The Township Comets play a joyful mix of South African Township Jazz which is inspired by South African saxophonist Dudu Pukwana, who in exile brought a pioneering mix of Township Jazz and improvisation to the UK and European scenes in the late 1960s.Their music is great fun; lively, rhythmic, slightly anarchic, dance-based jazz, it is hard to sit still.

The band features many of the former members of Dudu Pukwana’s group Zila, including the fantastic vocalist Pinise Saul. Singing in both Xhosa and English, the vocalist Pinise Saul also unusually vocalises along with the horn front-line. So if you’re a fan of their music and Chris McGregor, don’t miss this!

From the outset, everyone thought that Tobias was a good boy with a positive future ahead of him: his friends; his Primary School teachers; and most of all his Mum, Caroline. By the time he reaches adulthood he has been arrested, sectioned and treated in a medium secure mental health unit. What went wrong?

Other traces Tobias’s life in reverse, from his arrest and sectioning back through to his childhood. A fascinating and intensely moving perfor-mance, highlighting the missed opportunities for intervention in his life.

The play asks searching questions about the identity of those people who don’t fit into the neat boxes on monitor-ing forms and whether it needs to be like this for young people of dual heritage?

This is part of a 300 Voices pilot project in the West Midlands to tackle the stigma and discrimination that young African and Caribbean men face when accessing in patient mental health care, delivered in collaboration with perform-ing arts company The Hearth Centre.

Salty Water and Us is a play about the Lascar stories of Bangladeshi immigrants who had an aspiration of returning home but never happened. Soidulla who came from Sylhet to Hooghly Port was recruited with other sailors to work on a ship bound for England. Soidulla’s journey began differently from other sailors; in search of a person called Lindsay. Why was Soidulla looking for Lindsay so desperately? What made Soidulla’s feelings of revenge change when he eventually found the man he was so desperately looking for?

This is a story of Lascars’ dreams, struggles, their contributions and journeys are part of the shared British heritage that can be celebrated. The story aims to critically analyse and relate the recent “Go back Home’’ campaign from a different point of view.

My American Odyssey: From Windrush to the Whitehouse charts the life of a Black British boy, growing up in 1980s England, and travelling around America, sharing the cultural, historical and, at times emotional, links and contrasts between the two countries.

In the book, Roger Griffith (also known as the G-Man) reflects on the experiences of the first generation of Black-Britons born in the UK. Growing up within two cultures, through Thatcher’s turbulent 1980s to the present day - with a black man as the US president - Roger explores the influence of Black-British and African-American culture in education, religion, music, sport and now politics.

In sharing his story, an evocative combination of travelogue, history, and social commentary, Roger celebrates the lives of African-Americans, West Indians and Black Britons, from their roots of origin to the present day, as a new era of hope is not just dawning but continues to rise.

Touba is the new feature documentary revealing a different

face of Islam, one which is so essential to these divisive times.

The film chronicles the annual Grand Magaal pilgrimage of one million

Sufi Muslims to the holy Senegalese city of Touba. One of the rare films

still shot on celluloid film, its breath-takingly vivid cinematography by

Scott Duncan and integrated soundtrack elevates it to the level of

a humanist film poem.

This dynamic and immersive observational film takes us inside the

Mouride Brotherhood, one of West Africa’s most elusive organizations and one of the world’s largest Sufi

The annual Official Launch of Birmingham Black History Month (BHM) at The Drum in partnership with Birmingham City Council seeks to celebrate achievements, contributions and struggles of African, Asian and Caribbean people within the context of their diversity and heritage.

As part of the First World War Centenary, the theme for this year’s BHM goes by the title Black Blood Runs Red, which will mark the contribution and sacrifice of the soldiers and civilians from Britain’s former colonies. The Launch programme will include invited key note speakers and the premier of a specially commissioned performance which will interweave live music, spoken word and visual projection to tell the story of the contribution and sacrifice of Africans, Asian, Caribbean peoples to the First World War.

1,440,500 Indians fought for Britain during First World War, 47,746 were killed and 65,126 were wounded.

15,600 soldiers from the West Indies Regiment saw action in France, Palestine, Egypt and Italy during First World War – over 1,200 were killed more than 2,500 were wounded.

55,000 Africans from many countries served as combatant soldiers and many hundreds of thousands more as carriers and auxiliary troops. An estimated 10,000 were killed or died while serving.

Norms of Conduct, a triple bill of work that focuses on the distinguishing characteristics of human nature; Dance of Possession, Costa Del Sol and What Sexuality Is Love?Mystic and magical, with elements of tribalism and trance, Dance of Possession is part of Rosie Kay’s wider investigation which looks at how anthropological sources can inspire art today. Set to historic recordings from countries as diverse as Colombia, Cameroon and Central Africa.

Costa Del Sol is set under the blazing sun of dawn in Marbella. A group of young tourists perform their rites of summer, disrupting a picturesque flamenco postcard with a sacrificial rumpus of explosive and kitschy dance by choreographer Carlos Pons Guerra.

Artistic Director Adam Rutherford’s, What Sexuality Is Love? explores the notion of oppression across the world through a breakdown in laws that protect everyday human rights.

We are pleased to be working with Birmingham Royal Ballet, The University of Birmingham and local families to create an innovative family performance in peoples own homes; A personal show just for you and yours!

Flat out is inspired by the High-rise flats in Aston Newtown, the families who live there, their stories, aspirations and views of the city.

Working with local families to create a personalised show for all ages. The performance will be a unique experience for one family at a time. We want to find out how we can be better at creating shows for all the family.

This exciting project is one of ten to be selected as a national Family Arts Campaign.

Autumn 2014Autumn Term marks a new beginning for the learning programme at The Drum. We want to make the provision cheaper, bigger, busier and available to more children and young people.

There will be one fee for the term to cover all activity. The fee for the term will be £30 (pay £30 straight away, £3 a week or £10 in 3 instalments). It won’t matter how many YGB activities children and young people take part in the fee will remain the same. We will continue to request a £10 joining fee for new members.

A free week-long residential to Ingestre Hall in Staffordshire for selected young people interested in museums and heritage.

Throughout the term dance and drama is very much part of the plan, as is music, arts and crafts, film and photography. We will be re-introducing weekday evening sessions with Monday nights playing host to a new music project called Soft Pop, leading to live youth-led music events and Tuesday nights being Spoken Word workshops and Arts Award club nights. We will also be continuing our offer on Saturdays to include dance, drama, visual arts (including photography) and making.

The biggest announcement is that we are going to be doing a production of Bugsy Malone! Everyone will have the chance to be involved in the show but auditions for main parts will take place on Sat 20 Sep between 12pm - 4:30pm. Rehearsals will take place on Saturdays.

We also want to develop our work with young people aged 16 - 25 and will be launching TEN, a young artists development programme for ten young people enabling them to be part of a leadership group and create their own work. We hope you are pleased with how the programme is shaping up and would love your feedback including how you would like to be more actively involved in the learning programme.

The Drum Café


To coincide with Afrovibes South African Festival, The Drum will host Mandela 27, which is a cultural collaboration between the European Union and South Africa inspired by the iconic story of Nelson Mandela and the globally recognized Robben Island Museum.

The project involves a physical display based upon the dimensions of Nelson Mandela’s cell, housing cultural stories and works. To date the DIY Exhibition has already been requested by BELvue Museum in Brussels, Belgium, The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry, as well as the Great Britain and Robben Island Museum in Cape Town, South-Africa.

Burke travelled extensively throughout South Africa to Soweto, Sharpeville, Bophuthatswana, Cape Town and Durban, talking to people, attending rallies, funerals and demonstrations. This selection of photographs from the Library of Birmingham archives provides a unique insight of a nation undergoing immense change towards eventual democracy.

Thabo Mbeki succeeded Nelson Mandela as President of South Africa in 1999. In Rhetorical his most famous speeches are revisited, laying bare his powers of persuasion (and lack of the same). His often controversial nine years in high office, his style of governance and impact on his citizens are explored through the intriguing, compelling and satirical insights of a colourful (fictional) youth leader, Dada Mokone.

Mpumelo Paul Grootboom’s plays are well known to UK audiences: his trilogy of Township Stories, Foreplay and Welcome to Rocksburg have led to his nickname, “The Township Tarantino”. Dada Mokone is played by Presley Chweneyagae, who starred in the Oscar-winning film Tsotsi.

Learn Tabla and Dhol in a friendly relaxed environment with our Associated Artist Mendi Mohinder Singh. He is one of the UKs leading Indian percussionist and an experienced teacher and has a BA.MA in Indian drumming.

If you’re a beginner, classes cover the sitting position and correctly placing of your hand on the instrument and fundamental (balls) sounds played on the Tabla and some basic folk and classical (taal’s) rhythms.

Experienced players-musician of all ages and backgrounds looking to try something new these classes will enable you to learn the development of Indian rhythms from the North and South of Indian, you can transcribe the rudiments of Indian rhythm on your own spective percussion instruments.

Jamaican Hidden Histories:Independence, Identity& Belonging WorkshopSat 23 August / 10:30am - 5pm

An intergenerational workshop for adults (aged fifty and over) and young people (aged sixteen and above) from Birmingham’s diverse communities. Participants will share how their friends, family and cultural background have shaped and strengthened their own identity and sense of belonging.

Bring in your artefacts, postcards, letters, photographs, textiles and business archives of Jamaican origin. These items will be considered for the exhibitions in 2015 and fill the gaps in archives and collections for future generations. The workshop will be photographed and filmed for the project’s legacy.

This summer The Drum’s Arts Development and Outreach programme delivered a series of events attracting new audiences and participants, featured up and coming and established artists. The Drum also formed partnerships with a number of groups and organisation, particularly during the delivery of the A34 Festival in June.

To commence the new season and continuing in this vein of collaboration The Drum in partnership with Edgbaston Arts Forum will deliver Artsmile, a unique two day arts event, taking place in the shops and along the Harborne High Street.

The NCCCS at The Drum aims to create an open and inclusive space for debate, discussion and political engagement within and between the various communities of Birmingham. It embraces the ethos of Stuart Hall’s directorship of the original Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies at the University of Birmingham and seeks to analyse the problems facing Birmingham’s communities through forging a working relationship with those very citizens.

Harborne High Street in Birmingham will burst into life with Artsmile. Twenty cafes, wine bars, restaurants, shops, and pubs will become mini-art clubs, a cultural update of the long-standing tradition of the Harborne Mile. Everyone, regardless of their background, are invited to walk along the High Street, dip into what looks interesting and come away with their own creation or new experience… and it’s free.

Cultural Studies (NCCCS) – Research

Last Tues of the month from Sep until Mar 2015


NCCCS are pleased to introduce monthly workshops to support community-based research into questions that matter to Birmingham people. Open to all, including:

Anyone interested in learning about or doing social research in Birmingham

Groups or organisations who would like support with investigating a local research question

Students who want to do research relevant to local communities

The sessions will be facilitated by experienced social researchers, with participants encouraged to share knowledge and skills and learn from one another. Each workshop will be based on a specific topic or research technique.

The Silent Screams programme Manager, Nathan Dennis, of Birmingham based charity, Bringing Hope, an organisation now celebrating ten years of changing hearts and minds through its work in prisons, on the streets and in the community by helping those caught in cycles of pain and disaffection.

A group of young people from Small Heath and Yardley East area of Birmingham have undertaken a series of theatre workshops to explore individual young people’s creative skills and to develop as a group to showcase their skills to the wider audience.

Theatre workshops focused on individuals’ and groups’ skills like mask making, puppets, designs, music and storytelling to make their public performance.
