The Importance of T5 Lighting

T5 lamps have a higher lumen to watt ratio, what this means is that for every watt of electricity you put in, you get more lumens (brightness) out than from a T8 lamp, quite simply they are much brighter than an equivalent length T8 tube, producing up to twice as much light. While this is useful for tubes used in domestic or industrial fittings it is a major benefit to reptiles which need (on the whole) bright surroundings. This higher output extends into the non-visible areas of the spectrum which means you can get up to twice as much of the essential UVB from a T5 lamp compared to an equivalent T8.

Because T5 ballasts are usually electronic their output is more stable and flicker free compared to tubes used with older style magnetic ballasts. They also start up faster.

T5 tubes degrade at a slower rate than T8 tubes and also start at a higher output than an equivalent T8 tube. This extends their life and a T5 tube will produce adequate UVB for up to 12 months. This does vary with use and conditions though so it essential that the output is checked regularly. This applies to all tubes of course.

Because of the higher output of the T5 tubes they do not need to be as powerful as an equivalent T8 to achieve more light. They are also more efficient than the larger tubes and so are manufactured to run at lower wattages. This reduces running costs making them cheaper to run than an equivalent length T8 tube.

Again the thin tube design brings an additional benefit in the form of making the tubes more resilient to the effects of being turned on and off. The ignition process of a fluorescent lamp will gradually damage the filament and so eventually cause it to fail. In the T5 tubes this damage occurs less and this extends the life of the lamp.

No keeper these days, no matter how novice, can seriously claim that they are not aware of how important light is to reptiles. Any decent shop, care sheet or book will stress time and time again the importance of visible light, UVA and, particularly, UVB to reptiles.

It wasn’t always so clear cut and going back only 20 years our knowledge of reptile lighting was only a fraction of what it is today. When Zoo Med introduced the ReptiSun tubes in 1993 it is fair to say that it revolutionised reptile keeping, making the keeping and breeding of reptiles more successful than ever before. For the first time it was possible to provide UVB in the terrarium so the wavelength is suitable for reptiles, enabling them to absorb calcium and so avoid the potentially fatal effects of Metabolic Bone Disease.

Even now though we are still learning and every month seems to bring some new piece of research that increases our knowledge a bit more. Even things we assumed as facts are being questioned. The current thinking on leopard geckos and crested geckos for example is that they do better when provided low levels of UVB which is completely different to the thinking only a few years ago.

Since the introduction off the ReptiSun tubes there have been further advances, mercury vapour lamps, metal halide lamps and compacts have all been introduced to the market, but linear fluorescent tubes still remain the best-selling reptile lighting products. These too have changed over the years though. Originally the linear tubes were released as a T12 format, with a 32mm diameter, which was later replaced by the thinner T8 format. The latest development has been the change to the more efficient T5 format tubes. These tubes are only 16mm in diameter but bring a whole host of benefits when used for illuminating reptile enclosures.

temperature range where they operate at their optimum. For T5 lamps this optimum range is around 35oC, which is close to the conditions experienced inside many vivariums. The optimum operating temperature for T8 tubes is lower and so in most vivariums they are not running at their most efficient.

They are smaller! This makes it easier to position them inside a vivarium, makes hoods smaller and generally makes them easier to use.

Normally a better, newer product would command a premium price over products already in the market. This is not the case with T5 tubes where improved manufacturing processes, material cost savings and volume savings mean that they are equivalent or cheaper in cost to current T8 tubes.

There is a range of fittings available for T5 lamps. These

range from simple ballasts to vivarium hoods and even combined T5 and LED fittings to supply all the light a terrarium could ever need.

So, in summary, the modern T5 format, high output reptile lamps provide brighter visible light, better UVB, last longer, are easier to position and are cheaper to run and purchase than an equivalent T8 lamp. What’s not to like about them?
