Aviva for Desktops Licensing 5

CHAPTER 2

Aviva for Desktops Licensing

Each Aviva for Desktops installation must be licensed. For your convenience, Aviva for Desktops is available in both pre-licensed or post-licensed versions.

• Pre-licensed versions include a license file which is automatically set up during the installation process.

• Post-licensed versions require you to obtain a license file from Aviva Solutions Inc. The license can be set up during the installation process, or after using the included License Manager application.

If you have a post-licensed version of Aviva, but you have not yet obtained and installed a license, you can run Aviva for Desktops for an evaluation period of 15 days. If you choose not to obtain and install a license, the software will not function after the 15 day evaluation period has expired.

For a complete description of all Aviva for Desktop licensing options, or to purchase a license, contact Aviva Solutions Inc.

License installation options

Pre-licensed versions

If you are installing a pre-licensed version of Aviva, you will not have to enter licensing information during the installation, and you will not need to concern yourself with licensing issues until your license nears its expiration date.

Post-licensed versions

If you are installing a post-licensed version of Aviva, the Aviva License Manager will present you with two options for installing the license file:

• Install a Copy

This option creates a copy of the license file in the Aviva for Desktops application data folder. This option is best suited for mobile users who may not always have access to a centrally located license file. When the license expires, each installation with a copy must be individually upgraded.

• Link to Original

This option enables you to link multiple installations to a single license file stored at a central location. This option is best suited for network installations where the license file resides on a file server. When the license expires, only a single file has to be upgraded. Note that all Aviva users must have read rights to the central location.

Aviva User Profile 10

CHAPTER 4

Aviva User Profile

The Aviva User Profile, set during installation, determines whether the configuration data (sessions, destinations, workspaces, macros, etc.) are shared between users or are private to each user. The correct user profile settings are of particular importance in situations where many users must share a single workstation. Through the user profile settings, administrators can choose to let each user customize Aviva according to their needs and preferences or, alternatively, can ensure that all users must share a specific configuration. Once the user profile settings have been chosen during the installation, they cannot be changed when Aviva gets upgraded, repaired or has components added or removed.

In situations where each individual Aviva user has their own workstation, the user profile setting is less important. The default Aviva setting should not present any problems.

Choosing a User ProfileDuring the installation, you will be presented with this panel that allows you to specify the user configuration data location:

The default choice is My Documents. If selected, the private configuration data of every user will be located in their Documents folder in the Aviva Solutions\AFD subfolder. On first Aviva usage, every user starts with a fresh and identical configuration. This configuration data corresponds to the configuration created by the installation program. Changes to a user’s configuration do not affect other users.

Page 11: Aviva for DesktopsTM Release 15.0 Installation Guide · Aviva for Desktops includes a Setup Wizard that guides you through the installation process and lets you choose the components

Aviva User Profile 11

Hint: The original configuration data resides in the application or program data folder, in the Aviva Solutions\AFD subfolder. On first usage, this data is copied to the Aviva Solutions\AFD subfolder of the user’s documents folder.

If the All Users Shared Documents choice is selected, the configuration will be shared between users. The data is located in the shared or public documents folder in the Aviva Solutions\AFD subfolder. Changes made by one user will affect all users.

Hint: An administrator may restrict certain user rights by changing file and folder permissions. For instance, read-only permissions may be given to regular users, ensuring that only the administrator retains the right to change the configuration.

The User Defined choice is very similar to the previous one, except that the exact folder specified will contain the user profile (not the Aviva Solutions\AFD subfolder). This folder can be anywhere on a local or network drive.

Hint: If a network drive is chosen and if other installations of Aviva for Desktops choose the same drive as the location of the user configuration, data will be shared between multiple installations of Aviva. In this case, a network administrator can control the user rights.

Installing Aviva for Desktops 12

CHAPTER 5

Installing Aviva for Desktops

Aviva for Desktops provides you with a number of methods that you can use to install the software. The method that is best for you will depend on the number of computers on which you must install the software.

If the software is to be installed on only one or two computers, you will likely choose to install directly from the installation package.

If you need to perform many similar installations on many computers, you may want to consider using an alternate method of installing: silent install, which eliminates the need for user intervention in the install process.

This chapter provides an overview of the various methods that you can use to install Aviva for Desktops.

Before you install Before you install Aviva for Desktops, you should do the following:

• Read the Release Notes: The Release Notes provide the most up-to-date information about known limitations in a release. To read the Release Notes, double-click RELNOTE.TXT in the DOCS folder in the installation package.

• Read the Readme: The Readme provides information about the new features in a release. To read the Readme, double-click README.TXT located in the language specific sub-folder of the AVIVA folder in the Aviva for Desktops installation package (AVIVA\ENG for English, AVIVA\FRE for French, AVIVA\GER for German, AVIVA\ITA for Italian, AVIVA\SPA for Spanish).

Completing an installationSome connection types require that you have a specific protocol, driver, or client software installed on the computer with Aviva for Desktops. For information on which protocol, driver, or client software you need to install, and how to install it, see Installing Communications Support on page 22.

Silent Install 20

CHAPTER 7

Silent Install

The silent install method uses a pre-recorded file to control the Aviva for Desktops setup program. User-intervention is required only to start the setup program.

Overview of the silent install procedureIn a silent install, the install procedure is controlled by an .ISS file. The type of installation that is done and the components that are installed is determined by the .ISS file that you choose. The .ISS file is generated by running the interactive install with special parameters that instruct it to record all of the user choices.

Note: A scenario recorded on a 32-bit Windows version cannot be replicated on a 64-bit Windows version, and vice versa.

Generating the .ISS file

The Aviva for Desktops installation package contains the AVIVA folder.

1. Copy the AVIVA folder to your source machine hard-disk. The source machine is the machine where you will record an interactive install to be silently replicated to other machines. When the process starts, there should be no version of Aviva for Desktops installed on the source machine.

2. If the AVIVA folder contains a license file (avivalicense.lic) you have a pre-licensed version (see Pre-licensed versions on page 5). If the AVIVA folder does not contain the license file and you obtained a license from Aviva Solutions Inc., you have a post-licensed version (see Post-licensed versions on page 5). You need to copy the license file to the AVIVA folder now. If you proceed without a license file, the silent install will create trial installations. For each such installation, the license would have to be installed manually.

3. Open a Command Prompt window and navigate to the AVIVA folder, which contains setup.exe along with other files needed by the installation process.

4. Execute the command

setup.exe /r /f1<.iss file name>

If the .ISS file name contains spaces, please enclose it in double-quotes. You must use an absolute path name, otherwise the location of the file will be relative to your system directory (typically c:\windows).

5. Perform the setup as described in Interactive Install on page 14. All your actions have been recorded to the .ISS file.

Page 21: Aviva for DesktopsTM Release 15.0 Installation Guide · Aviva for Desktops includes a Setup Wizard that guides you through the installation process and lets you choose the components

Silent Install 21

Replicating the installation

1. Make sure that the target machine(s) where the silent install will take place have access to the AVIVA folder and to the .ISS file that you generated. This can be accomplished via network sharing of the required files or copying the files to the target machine. When the process starts, there should be no version of Aviva for Desktops installed on the target machine.

2. On the target machine, open a Command Prompt window and navigate to the AVIVA folder.

3. Execute the command

setup.exe /s /f1<.iss file name>

If the .ISS file name contains spaces, please enclose it in double-quotes. You must use an absolute path name, otherwise the location of the file will be relative to your system directory (typically c:\windows).

The recorded Aviva for Desktops installation proceeds silently.

Note: A scenario recorded on a 32-bit Windows version cannot be replicated on a 64-bit Windows version, and vice versa.

Page 26: Aviva for DesktopsTM Release 15.0 Installation Guide · Aviva for Desktops includes a Setup Wizard that guides you through the installation process and lets you choose the components

Post-Installation Scenarios 26

Generating the .ISS file

The Aviva for Desktops installation package contains the AVIVA folder.

1. Copy the AVIVA folder to your source machine hard-disk. The source machine is the machine where you will record a scenario to be silently replicated to other machines. When the process starts, there is already a version of Aviva for Desktops installed on the source machine.

2. Open a Command Prompt window and navigate to the AVIVA folder, which contains setup.exe along with other files needed by the scenario.

3. Execute the command

setup.exe /r /f1<.iss file name>

If the .ISS file name contains spaces, please enclose it in double-quotes. You must use an absolute path name, otherwise the location of the file will be relative to your system directory (typically c:\windows).

4. Perform the scenario. All your actions have been recorded to the .ISS file.

Replicating the scenario

1. Make sure that the target machine(s) where the silent scenario will take place have access to the AVIVA folder and to the .ISS file that you generated. This can be accomplished via network sharing of the required files or copying the files to the target machine. When the process starts, there is already a version of Aviva for Desktops installed on the target machine.

2. On the target machine, open a Command Prompt window and navigate to the AVIVA folder.

3. Execute the command

setup.exe /s /f1<.iss file name>

If you want to install Aviva in a language other than the operating system’s default language, execute the command
