  • According to the founder of the school ofDeoband (Muhammad Qasim Nanotvi), thesouls of the Prophets (peace be upon them)have the exact same connection with theirbodies after death as they did during life:

Translation: The souls of the Prophets peacebe upon them have the same relation withtheir bodies after death which they had beforedeath. This is the reason that their bodies donot decompose like their living bodies as is

  • mentioned in the Hadith. And this is the reasonwhy their wives cannot marry, and why theirmaterial wealth cannot be inherited.

On another page, Qasim Nanotvi claims that infact the souls of the Prophets (peace be uponthem) never leave their bodies.

According to Deobandi Hanafi scholar, MaulanaAbdul Haq Haqqani of Delhi (d. 1302 H / 1885CE), the punishment of the grave (Adhab al-Qabr) has no connection to the Earthly grave. He writes:

  • Translation: The constricting and expanding ofthe grave does not mean that this ditch(Earthly grave) in which the body is buriedconstricts or expands. Rather, the constrictionand expansion occurs to the soul on anotherplane of existence. That [other plane ofexistence] is in fact the real grave, and it is onlyout of custom, in relation to the corpse, thatthis ditch is referred to as 'Grave'.
