AVR with Sutureless valve - Universitair Ziekenhuis (UZ) Leuven, Belgium BELGIUM

Bart Meuris Filip Rega

Universitair Ziekenhuis (UZ) Leuven - Belgium

This is a two days training program.

The course is specifically designed for Cardiac Surgeons. No additional requirements are needed. Trainee's Perceval experience, if any, should be provided ahead in order to tailor the program.

This course is designed for cardiac surgeons and their medical centers seeking certification on Perceval implantation or seeking an advanced training to broaden and advance their use of Perceval.

The University Hospitals Leuven (UZ Leuven) started their Perceval program in 2007, performing the First-in-man implantations together with centers in Paris and Hannover. They have currently Perceval patients with more than 12 years of follow-up and in total they have performed over 800 implants in various indications. Their data on the 11y follow-up in 468 patients have been presented at the latest AATS meeting in Toronto. This course can be tailored and can include live case observations with either combined procedures (AVR + CABG and/or multiple valves) in full sternotomy, or isolated AVR cases through mini-sternotomy approach. The course is guided by prof. Meuris and prof. Rega, both full professor at the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven) and both are experienced Perceval proctors. They are staff members at the Department of Cardiac Surgery in Leuven since 2007. Together they have published over 200 peer-reviewed papers. KU Leuven also performed the pre-clinical research towards the novel anticalcification treatment on the Perceval Plus valve.

The Herzzentrum Dresden (Dresden-Germany) started their Perceval program in 2014 and performed over 500 Perceval valve implants up to 2020 in various approaches. In 2019 the Cardiac Department introduced the unique “360° Approach”. This approach allows a tailor-made treatment for every individual patient. Depending on patient’s anatomy, physiognomy, generell & surgicial risk. Yearly the Cardiac Department is performing over 800 Aortic valve procedures. The focus of the course is on implantation techniques, surgical approaches, product features, patient indications/selection, echocardiographic evaluation, patient / clinical benefits and available clinical data. The course can be tailored and can include live case(s) observation with either combined procedures (concomitant valve procedures or AVR+CABG) in MIC or isolated AVR cases through new established route accesses like “MICLAT S".The course is guided by Prof. Kappert and his team. Prof. Kappert is the managing senior physician of the Cardiac Surgery Division of the Herzzentrum Dresden.

Eight years later, the entire team at the hospital uses Perceval as the valve of choice, reaching 1000 patients treated, which has allowed them to expand their minimally invasive practice at the hospital. The course focuses on Right Anterior Thoracotomy (RAT) with the support of Dr. Solinas as leading trainer, very experienced Perceval proctor. After the internship in Department of Cardiac Surgery at University of Bologna (Policlinico Sant’Orsola) 1994-1999 Dr Solinas worked at St. Antonius Hospital (Nieuwegein, Holland), and at Goldman Children's Heart Center, Columbia University, New York. He was as well consultant in Cardiac Surgery Imperial College University/Imperial College Trust, Hammersmith Campus, London and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London. He is now Director Cardiac Surgery at Ospedale del Cuore “G.Pasquinucci” .

One and half day

The course is specifically designed for Cardiac Surgeons. No additional requirements are needed. Trainee's Perceval experience, if any, should be provided ahead in order to tailor the program.

This course is designed for cardiac surgeons and their medical centers seeking certification on Perceval implantation in order to broaden and advance their patient offering in the area of AVR therapies, devices and procedures or seeking an advanced training to broaden and advance their use of Perceval.

The course is run by Mr Max Baghai, clinical lead in cardiac surgery in King’s College Hospital and Perceval Masterproctor (one among less than 10 most experienced proctors). Graduated in 1996 from Imperial College Medical School in London, during his training in cardiothoracic surgery within the London deanery he was awarded a clinical fellowship by the British Heart Foundation to complete a PhD at King’s College London. His research evolved around techniques in preserving heart muscle during congenital cardiac surgery. He was awarded the Ethicon scholarship by the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons in the UK and went on a fellowship to Hong focusing in complex cardiac and minimal access surgery. He has been a consultant at King’s College Hospital since 2012 where he went on to build the minimal access program in cardiac surgery and the unit provides one of the largest and most diverse programs in the country.
