My name is Marcus Wheelhouse and I would like to take your child through a similar routine that got me from amateur to professional, a regime that

so many of the touring professionals I coach, including Ryan Fox, are implementing on tour today.

Marcus Wheelhouse is a former touring golf professional, and now the director of Wheelhouse Golf (WG) at JK’s World of Golf. He has recently expanded his coaching into Akarana Golf Club in Mt Roskill where he stills holds the course record.

WG hosts corporate golf days, holds golf clinics and coaches all levels from beginners, to recreational golfers, right through to some of New Zealand’s top amateurs and professionals. Marcus has also been involved as a television golf presenter/commentator as the “on course” commentator for the NZ Open on Sky TV. He appears regularly on the Holden Golf Show on Sky and spent over four years hosting a weekly radio show with legend broadcaster Brenden Telfer on Radio Sport. He currently writes a “Monthly Tips” article in NZ Golf Magazine. Marcus also works with Elite Golf Tours and hosts a group of golfers to the Masters at Augusta every year.

Playing career: Marcus started playing the age of eight and has enjoyed plenty of success. He was ranked number one amateur golfer in the world in 1995 and consequently was awarded Auckland sportsman of the year. He’d won over 31 amateur tournaments; including being the only player to successfully defend the New Zealand Strokeplay Championship in 93-94.

The Aucklander was a member of the New Zealand Eisenhower trophy team in 1994 and won six times overseas including the Malaysian amateur and the prestigious Lake Macquarie championship in Australia.

Marcus turned professional in January 1996 and was named rookie of the year on the Australasian tour aft er which he played in Europe for fi ve years on the Challenge Tour.

From there Marcus changed tack and went to the USA to play on the Nationwide and Mini tours. Aft er an injury in 2006 he returned home in 2007 to regroup but again changed his outlook and started to teach the game whilst fi nishing a full qualifi cation as a class AAA PGA member.

Marcus is now coaching some of the best upcoming players in the country including Ryan Fox, Nick Gillespie Fraser Wilkin, Michael Hendry, Daniel Pearce and Harry Bateman. He also runs the Wheelhouse Golf Academy which is designed to nurture young players to attain their dreams in golf and life.

In 2015 Marcus was appointed the Auckland golf coach for the Men and the Women and is in charge of 25 player squad and their program and is a member of Sport New Zealand’s PCA programme which aims to upskill New Zealand coaches to produce elite athletes.

He is a former tour rep on NZPGA board and still plays in varied Pro Am events.

The 43 year old lives in Auckland with his wife Melodie Robinson and two young children Jenson and Freddie Wheelhouse.

MY GOAL IS TO IMPROVE MY PLAYERS. I BELIEVE THERE IS NO BETTER WAY THAN TO IMPROVE AN INDIVIDUAL BY EXPOSING THEM TO THE RIGHT INFORMATION AND SHOWING THEM THE WAY TO MOVE FORWARD AND MEASURING THEIR PROGRESS. THEY WILL LEARN WHAT THE BEST IN THE GAME HAVE DONE AND CURRENTLY DO.

• An induction day.

• A Physical screening at the beginning and ending the year done by Paul greenwood – one of New Zealand’s leading golf physical trainers. (A half day TPI screening and body measure with strength and flexibility on a Saturday afternoon).

• Club fitting and recommendations.

• A “Trackman” combined test (start and end of terms). Checking clubhead speed/ angle of attack/ club path/ combine test.

• Video analysis (weekly) from WGA.

• A periodisation report and plan for each athlete’s individual needs in physical, mental and technical levels.

• Nutritional advice for playing and tournament play

and day-to-day goals.

• Weekly coaching and video sessions, group session mostly. This will be a great way for the players to connect with all the other players involved and share information.

• Game assessment information sheet.

• Golf balls included in group sessions at JK’s World of Golf.

• When applicable, Sunday sessions will be held at Akarana Golf Club for short game practice, and playing rounds of golf.

• 8 players in a junior elite program.• This group I will see 2 times a week• Monday 5.30pm-6.30pm Term 1 and 4 at Akarana Golf

club term 2 and 3 at Jk’s World of golf, for short game• Wednesday 5.00pm-6.30pm at Jk’s World of golf, for

long game• When diaries permit’s Sunday sessions at Akarana golf

club playing 18 holes (at Least 4 sessions)• Cost $2000 per player per anum
