Dr. Rouse joined ADEA in 2015 as ADEA Senior Scholar in Residence and serves as Chair of the ADEAGies Foundation Board of Trustees and ADEA staff liaison to the ADEA Council of Deans. Previously he was Dean of the Howard University College of Dentistry (HUCD) from 2004 to 2014. Prior to his deanship, he served as Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Chair of the Department of Clinical Dentistry at HUCD. He currently is Dean Emeritus and Professor Emeritus at HUCD. Before entering academia, Dr. Rouse served 24 years in the U.S. Army Dental Corps, retiring with the rank of Colonel and last assignment as Commander, U.S. Army Dental Command.
Dr. Rouse is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and a member of many professional organizations, including the American Dental Association (ADA), the National Dental Association (NDA), the Hispanic Dental Association, ADEA, the American Association of Dental Boards and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. He is also a member of the National Advisory Council of the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education, an appointed member of the Board of Regents – Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and an At-Large Regent of the American College of Dentists. He serves on the Board of Visitors of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, the Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry and the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.
In March 2010, Dr. Rouse was elected President-elect of ADEA, and on March 17, 2011, he was installed as ADEA’s first African-American President. In March 2013 he completed his three-year tenure as an ADEA Principal Officer and Board Member. He also served as an advisor for the ADEA Leadership Institute in association with AAL. He received an ADEA Presidential Citation in 2009 and an ADEA Chair of the Board Citation in 2015, both for distinguished service to the Association and dedication to advancing the dental education community.
Other recognitions include the 2015 Alan J. Davis/Student Clinicians of the American Dental Association Achievement Award, the Howard University College of Dentistry Alumni Achievement Award in 1997 for distinguished service to the country and the profession of dentistry, the 2011 Sterling V. Mead Award from the District of Columbia Dental Society for outstanding achievement in dentistry, and the 2011 Legend Award from the NDA. Upon his retirement as dean, he received the 2015 Trailblazer Award from the NDA and a 2015 Presidential Citation from the ADA. Dr. Rouse was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters Honorary Degree from the Western University of Health Sciences in May 2014. He has served as a reviewer for the Journal of Public Health Dentistry and the Journal of Dental Education. He is married to Yvonne (Fish) Marie Rouse, a retired educator.
