CARMEN at AZ OPERANovember 19 – 21 at Phoe-nix Symphony HallWhen a soldier meets a temptress, someone gets burned. She may be the most famous seductress in all of fiction. Carmen, a wild and beauti-ful gypsy in 19th century Spain, ensnares most men in her fiery grasp. Her newest conquest is the soldier Don Jose. Tormented by pas-sion, he abandons duty and honor to win Carmen’s love. When a brash bullfighter catches her eye, Don Jose’s jealousy flares, threatening to burn out of control. Unafraid of fate, Carmen may follow her fickle heart wherever it leads – even if it leads to death.

This season marks the debut of a new production of Carmen, highlighted by a daring new concept in staging. Acclaimed tenor Fernando de la Mora brings passion and conviction to the role of Jose and Beth Clayton sings the title role in one of the world’s most beloved operas. Sung in French with English supertitles.Experience Carmen like never before… on stage amongst the cast! This special ticket includes a seat on stage in the toreador’s bull ring for Act I and II, a pre-performance sangria recep-tion in the Green Room, and com-memorative photo with the cast. The holidays are fast approaching here in the month of November as new shows and openings continue. There’s something for everyone this time of year-with music, drama and excitement everywhere! MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM at Arizona Theatre Company in Herberger CenterATC and the Penumbra Theatre Company have put together an excellent co-pro-duction of the August Wilson drama, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. This production is masterfully directed by Lou Bellamy and stars a talented cast of characters only August can bring to life with great wit and perception. It’s a period piece, set back in late 1920’s Chicago, where blues were king and the black culture was still growing out of racism and oppression. With a recording studio and dressing room as the back drop-we get to drop in on a cast of characters making their way through the “white man’s” world-with their music as the medicine of the emotions. This is a powerful production led by Abdul Salaam El Razzac, James Craven and William John Hall Jr. as Toledo, Cut-ler and Slow Drag-a crew of session musicians waiting to record the next big hit for Ma Rainey, played with intensity and power by Javetta Steele. But there’s a wild card that gets thrown into the mix as Levee, a hot composer and horn player played by James T. Alfred, shows up late to start the music flowing with heated emotions that eventually leads to tragic consequences. There’s tremendous performances around this whole cast and the genius of August Wilson is present everywhere. Ma Rainey’s is a gem for the season.Through Nov. 28th Tickets 602-256-6899 or ArizonaTheatreCompany.org

‘UltraStar Cinemas’ latest addition to its high-tech theaters’

On Friday November 19, 2010, the UltraStar Theater in Scottsdale, AZ opens! We in the press were in-vited to take a tour of the new movie theater with our guide Damon Rubio, Executive Vice President of Opera-tions at UltraStar Cinemas. And what an experience! Rather than have one reviewer, why not share what ap-pealed to each of us.

Joseph J. Airdo (Examiner.com):

While attending the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Com-munication at Arizona State Univer-sity, I was fortunate to have been able to take a course in public speaking. As a student, I was expected to complete several assignments in which I tack-led various topics of my choosing.

Having been a film-fanatic since an extremely early age, most of my per-suasive speeches, as they were called, focused on improving the general movie going experience. I cannot tell you how many times inconsiderate audience members have spoiled my entertainment escape with talking, texting and transgressing.

I am the kind of moviegoer who takes the silver screen seriously, preferring to steal away into the on-screen story for a couple of hours. To me, movies are – and always have been – min-iature vacations. UltraStar Cinemas has, at least at first glance, designed its new UltraLuxe theater in Scotts-dale with moviegoers like me in mind.

Sure, who would not be impressed with the UltraLuxe’s expanded food and beverage selection? (Especially the Marilyn Monroe panini – semi-sweet chocolate and brie cheese on sourdough bread, lightly brushed

with basil.) And in-seat ordering is certainly a nice touch, to say the least.

But the thing that impresses me most about the UltraLuxe is its unrivaled commitment to providing the best movie going experience possible. What genuine movie-lover would not feel compelled to reserve a seat in one of the theater’s 21+ Star Class auditoriums to enjoy a motion picture with a like-minded audience, away from all-too-common distractions and annoyances?

The entire look of the UltraLuxe, decorated in a classic Tuscan style, makes for an enormously inviting atmosphere. Toss in 3D Pure Digital Cinema projection and seats boasting D-BOX motion technology and a film-fanatic like me is likely to think he has died and gone to Hollywood heaven.

Granted, self-contained movie-bubbles like the ones I described in some of my persuasive speeches back in college may still be a few years off (although the Star Class auditoriums’ VIP viewing rooms come awfully close). But UltraStar’s UltraLuxe in Scottsdale will undoubtedly become the theater of choice for anyone who, like me, is a serious cinephile.

Randy Montgomery (AZ Weekly):

When the market near my office re-opened and offered covered parking, a wine tasting counter and culinary classes, I thought Phoenix had hit the big time. Even with that, I have been quite envious of cities like Los Ange-les where high-end luxury theatres with reserved seating and gourmet snack offerings are commonplace; something Phoenix still lacked de-spite being one of the top movie going markets in the country. Alas (and quite overdue) comes Ultra Star Cinemas, a much respected

theatre chain in San Diego. Ultra Star has two locations in Arizona, one in Surprise and one in Lake Havasu. Much to my delight, they are open-ing a new location in an amazingly remodeled venue at the Scottsdale Pavilions (Loop 101 and Indian Bend near the new Diamondbacks train-ing facility). With eleven screens, it is small in comparison to other 24 and 30-plexes around town, but a tour of the facility demonstrates that the designers have managed to create a unique luxury experience in a com-fortable environment with digital poster cases, carefully decorated auditoriums, beautiful wall coverings and a rich, Tuscan feel. When it opens this week, Ultra Star Scottsdale Pavilions will be the most state of the art facility in the nation. A gourmet snack bar, leather seating and a coffee bar compliment the Pure Digital Cinema projection, D-BOX enhanced motion chair technology seats and StarClass Auditorium Seat-ing which offers patrons 21+ exclusive auditoriums to view their favorite film without screaming kids or chatty teenagers. This venue is unmatched anywhere around town and makes the big guys in L.A. look like small potatoes. What stood out to me the most; the two smaller StarClass auditoriums which feature twin seats with an aisle on either side, expanded arm rests with buttons to push to call and order popcorn, a gourmet Panini, or a glass of beer or wine. The highlight... in the back of the theater is a small VIP room with comfy leather couches, a bar and private restroom. For a small fee on top of your ticket price, you and a date, friends or coworkers can have your own screening room. Ultra Star… you are close to my home and work and will undoubtedly be-come my new home away from home. Don’t worry… for those looking for the traditional movie going experi-ence, they have that too.

Stan Robinson (ScreenScene.org):

I spend a lot of time ‘in the dark’, as my friends like to call it! Being familiar and a frequent visitor to the

UltraStar Cinemas in Surprise, AZ, I had an indication on what to expect from the newest addition in Scotts-dale, AZ. I’ve often felt that although the content on screen features some of the most advanced technologi-cally stimulating content, the venues for watching a movie left a lot to be desired, save for one theatre, the UltraStar theater in Surprise, AZ.

First, the ticketing center is inside of the theater, very nice due to the very hot summers and lines for a popular movie! Inside it’s a unique mixture of cinema and futuristic technology, with high ceiling-atrium styled envi-ronment and textured walls. Gone are the traditional paper behind the glass framed style posters, here they’re digital and change!

As you enter the main auditoriums’ spacious aisle with 21+ auditoriums to one side, and general auditoriums on the other, it’s leaving the outside world behind, entering a futuristic cinematic experience! The amenities that stood for me and as my col-leagues know, one is food! I’m just not into the popcorn-candy thing. If I’m going to catch a movie with a date, I can choose one of the two smaller ‘StarClass’ auditoriums which has twin ‘love seat’ style’ seats with an aisle on each side, great arm rests with buttons I can call and order pop-corn (for my date), a gourmet Panini or other real food, a glass of beer, wine, and it’ll be brought right to me!

The best feature for me as a film-maker, and it’ll certainly work for corporate as well, you can have your own screening room! In the back of the auditorium is a glassed viewing small VIP room with leather couches, a bar and it’s own private restroom. Just think of ‘pitching’ that idea in an environment like this! And, it’s highly affordable for a small fee that’s added to your ticket price!

There’s so much of the finer aspects offered to experience, my best advice, make it point to come on out and ex-perience it for yourself. I guarantee, it’ll become your favorite theatre for movies; live digital broadcast con-certs, and more!

Interview: Oscar® winning director Danny Boyle & ‘127 Hours’

The film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ (2008) and Best Director Oscar® brought direc-tor Danny Boyle’s name to the fore-front of movie making for the general moviegoer. For us as filmmakers, he’s the example of believing in a project and never giving up!

For his latest, ‘127 Hours’ he tackles the true story of Aron Ralston and the shooting of the main enviroment, be-ing trapped in a canyon and makng it interesting enough to hold one’s interest visually. Danny Boyle was very gracious in sharing his insight on bringing ‘127 Hours’ to the screen!

Stan: What an awesome undertak-ing Danny; a true story with virtually one character to carry it, and, a very limited location to make interesting! What prompted you to tell this story on screen?

Danny: Well, I had a very strong reac-tion to the book, which I don’t often have, but I had a very clear image from the book on how to make the film. It was a structural impetus, the book is written in alternating chapters of real time in the canyon and then, kind of reminiscing about home life, but not from the perspective of the canyon. And the next chapter is the canyon again. I felt that wasn’t right, the story I thought that was extraordinary, what was so compelling about is that you stay in the

canyon with the guy really, anything that he does experience, are intense visita-tions’ going through his mind on parts of his life, or, literal visitations’ in the canyon by people in his life.

I felt that structurally, it was the only way you could ever conquer the problem of the final choice he has and find it ac-ceptable! It’s unwatchable of what he has to do actually. I was starting to have a horror complex. I thought, how can you actually make that possible for an audience to watch it, a regular audience? And the only way to do it is through an actor, to put them through this narrative first person experience with the audi-ence so that the two are bound together in a way that you are implicated in what he eventually does. In a way that you can almost help him do it. And you can certainly hear it in screenings with people vocalizing during it. It’s the feel-ing that the audience has for him!

Stan: Each of us realized during our screening the empathy factor for the character…

Danny: The key dynamic is that in some instances, a few in the audience are looking away, but they don’t walk out at all. Some have been carried out and then wake up almost immediately. And then they’re fine, and go back in and watch the rest of the movie!

There’s more with director Danny Boyle on how he chose actor James Franco for the lead, and the challenge of shooting a story with one location: in the canyon; and the staging of the fantastic shot that starts down in the canyon with a close up of James, pulling back to the canyon edge, and stopping high above, giving the true sense of how hopeless the survival of Aron Raiston is at www.ScreenScene.org

Stan Robinson’s ‘Capsule Reviews!’

‘The Next Three Days’ ~ How far will you go to save a loved one!

This story centers on the Brennan’s, a married couple (Russell Crowe & Eliza-beth Banks) whose life together spins out of control when the she is accused of a murder. When the legal system fails to get at the truth, over ‘The Next Three Days’, John Brennan puts into motion a plan of his own!

Oscar winning director Paul Haggis, who also co-wrote the screenplay, presents a tightly woven suspense thriller that

as it escalates into sheer desperation, demonstrates the feeling of love and more importantly, the belief of the in-nocence of one’s spouse! (Rated PG-13) 4 of 5 stars

‘127 Hours’ ~ Making the ultimate decision to save one’s life…

‘127 Hours’ is the true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston’s efforts to save himself after a falling boulder traps him in an isolated canyon in Utah. Over the next five days (127 hours) Ralston (James Franco) examines his life which he records on his camcorder while trapped, surviving the elements to finally discover he has the courage to make the decision to free himself by any means necessary, scale a 65 foot wall and hike over eight miles before he is finally rescued.

Oscar® winning director Danny Boyle and James Franco’s ‘tour de force’ per-formance deliver a stunning film on the will to survive and the ultimate decision on how to do so. Look for this movie to garner a few awards! (Rated R-94 minutes) 4 ½ of 5 stars

Go Barefoot, Try Acu-puncture!

By Chef Ra-chel Albert

What do Cher, U.S. Tour de France Cy-clist George Hincapie, and U.S. high jumper Amy Acuff have in common?

They all use Traditional Chinese Medicine, a 3,000-year-old health-care system.

This time-tested, scientifically vali-dated system of natural health care includes acupuncture, herbal medi-cine, nutritional therapy, and thera-peutic massage. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends acupuncture as a treatment for more than 40 ailments, including but not limited to tennis elbow, sciatica,

low back pain, rheumatoid arthri-tis, sciatica, migraines, toothaches, bronchitis, bronchial asthma, chronic duodenal ulcers, trigeminal neuralgia, facial paralysis, acute and chronic gastritis, colitis, and Meniere’s syn-drome. (For a more detailed list visit www.barefoot-acupuncture.com)

Although many people could benefit from acupuncture, few insurance plans cover it so cost is often a con-sideration. Don Matesz, a licensed acupuncturist and owner of Barefoot Acupuncture Clinic offers a solution. On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 8 pm, Matesz provides acupuncture treatments for only $25. “We make acupuncture affordable by offering community acupuncture treatments, treating several people in one room, as commonly done in Asia.”

He explains, “We don’t do a whole lot of talking. You don’t remove your clothes. We use points on your arms, legs, and other areas that we can reach while you remain fully dressed. We privately get the basics about your health concerns then quickly

insert appropriate needles so you can de-stress and allow the treatment to take effect. You can come in with your friends or family and all get a treatment at the same time.” The af-fordable rates enable patients to get frequent treatments, which are the key to good results.

Barefoot Clinic is located at 3530 E. Indian School Road (Suites 2 and 3) in Phoenix. You be the judge. Don’t be shy, give it try. Lucky Charms was invented in 1963 by General Mills. Besides the blue diamond’s addition, purple horseshoes were added in 1984 and rainbows in 1992. The pink hearts have been an original shape from the beginning and the ONLY shaped and colored marshmallow to survive every change.

Pizza was introduced to Americans by Italian immigrants around the turn of the 20th Century.

The first pizza restaurant debuted in America in the early 1900’s in New York, and pizza has continued to rise in popularity ever since.

While other pizza restaurants began to pop up, it wasn’t until the 1950’s that pizza franchises, such as Pizza Hut, came on the scene.

Thanksgiving and Beer

Without question, one of the biggest holidays of the year for eating and drinking is Thanksgiving. Besides the obligatory list of things to be thank-ful for, the entire day is about eating, drinking and watching football. And it’s not just a standard meal…in some households, dozens of dishes compete with each other for space on both the table and your plate. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberries, vegeta-bles and so much more take the stage in a dance which has the sole purpose of getting you to loosen your belt and fall asleep in front of the television in the fourth quarter of the last game of the day. Sounds like quite the challenge for somebody wanting to pour the proper beer. Fortunately, there are options that will make it easy to make sure you and your guests have the best beer to pair with your meal.

The first key is to not try to find one beer that is all things to all people. You probably won’t pull it off. Instead set up a sampling table somewhere in the vicinity of the dinner table and stock it with a variety of beers to suit a variety of foods. Put out small glasses if you have them and encourage guests to sample the beers in four ounce servings so they can pair multiple beers with the meal. Try some all around good food beers, add in some beers that present

a crossover opportunity for the wine drinker, pull out one or two outrageous beers that will be a treat for the adven-turous members of your dining group, and top it all of with a couple of dessert and digestif beers. Don’t be concerned if there are those in your crowd that may claim to not like beer. Have some wine available for them, personally I prefer a Pinot Noir and a Riesling with the traditional turkey dinner, but expect them to gravitate towards the beer, just because it is different. If you really want to go all out, make up index cards for each beer with a description of the flavor to be expected.

The first beers to include are the classic food beers, beers that don’t take much imagination to enjoy and pair well with a wide range of food. For these, I recommend staying on the maltier side, although you will need something with a little bit of hops to cut through the richer foods. So let’s go with these:

New Belgium 1554This is a darker beer based on an old Brussels recipe. It has a nice touch of sweetness to it but is easy drinking and pairs well with a large variety of food. Don’t let your guests shy away from the color of this beer. Dark is not a flavor.

Grand Canyon PilsnerA wonderful beer with plenty of carbon-ation to help cleanse the palate so each bite of your meal is as enjoyable as the first.

SanTan Devil’s AleThis is the beer with that little hop bite. It has a solid malt backbone to stand up to a variety of food, and has just enough hops to deal with the gravy.

Next, let’s look at something for the wine drinkers. Here we will go for something with a little more complexity that still will pair with different foods:

The Bruery Autumn MapleHow can you not include a beer that is actually made with yams? In addition to the yams, this Belgian Strong Dark Ale is brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg,

allspice, vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup. It will go great with dark meat, stuffing and, of course, yams.

Tripel KarmelietThis Belgian Tripel brewed with barley, wheat and oats has layers of flavor that will match just about any food you choose to serve. The fact that it was named, “The Best Ale in the World” at the World Beer Awards certainly doesn’t hurt.

Lost Abbey Red BarnI believe that saisons may be the best overall style in the world to pair with food and this offering from Lost Abbey certainly helps prove the point. It will pair with just about everything on the table and works great as an aperitif as well. For something different, try the slightly earthier Avant Garde from this brewery instead.

How about challenging your guests

while still giving them a strong pairing experience? Don’t worry; I have sug-gestions for those as well.

Ballast Point Sculpin It’s a hop bomb to be sure, but still has a solid malt backbone and will work well with very rich foods, and if you serve blue cheese before or after the meal, it’s an incredible pairing.

Cantillon GueuzeTart and refreshing, use this as a palate cleanser for a multi-course meal. It’s perfect just before the main course is served.

Redstone Vanilla Bean Cinnamon Stick MeadMeads are beverages where the primary fermentable is honey. This particular one is named after the natural flavor-ings added. Try a Black Raspberry, Traditional Mountain Honey Wine or Ju-niper Mead as well. They are refreshing and a different flavor, especially good with lighter dishes.

Crispin The SaintThis hard apple cider fermented with Trappist Ale yeast and a hint of organic maple syrup is just right for a non-traditional Thanksgiving dinner. While it pairs well with turkey it really stands out as a complement to a ham dinner.

And now for dessert, stay with rich beers the complement the flavors and the richness of the dessert:

Sonoran White Chocolate Ale, Breck-enridge Vanilla Porter, Left Hand Milk Stout

All three of these beers go great with desserts and the ingredients in the dish would determine which would be best. For a lighter creamy dessert, go with the White Chocolate Ale, since it’s a wheat beer, it may not stand up to incred-ibly rich desserts. The Vanilla Porter is perfect with dishes like Crème Brulee or Flan. A lot of pies, especially pecan and pumpkin will go well with this. Finally, chocolate or coffee based desserts (think tiramisu or mocha) deserve Milk Stout. The unfermented sugars along with the roastiness of the stout make it ideal for this situation.

Cherish Raspberry or Cherry LambicActually any traditionally made lambic will work great with fruit desserts or pies. The underlying tartness from these spontaneously fermented beers provides a nice counter-balance to the sweetness of the dessert. Try to avoid the artificially sweetened lambics out there as they tend to be a bit cloying especially with a sweet dessert.

North Coast Old RasputinPour it in a snifter and don’t worry about dessert, sit out on the patio and enjoy it. Old Stock Barleywine from North Coast is also a great stand-alone meal finisher.

So those are my recommendation for Thanksgiving dinner. No matter what you choose to drink, make sure it goes well with your food. The ability of beer to enhance the dining experience is amazing and it certainly deserves its place at your table.

Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy!

Firestone Walker Four-teenth Anniversary Re-lease By Maureen Basenberg, Founder AZ Girls’ Pint Out Last week marked the release of Firestone Walker’s Fourteenth An-niversary Beer. If you are not familiar this California brewery has become known for some fantastically diverse and award winning beers. Their An-niversary release has become a cause for celebration amongst the craft beer community.

This release consists of a mind bog-gling blend of six beers, each aged individually in different barrels. The final blend is made of a range of 3% of one of the beers to 31% of another. They breakdown as: Double Double Barrel Ale, a Double version of their flagship at 31% of the blend, Sticky Monkey, an English Barley Wine at 29% of the blend, Parabola, a Russian Imperial Oatmeal Stout at 27% of the blend, Velvet Merlin, a Traditional Oatmeal Stout at 7% of the blend, Good Foot, an American Barley Wine at 3% of the blend and finally Black Xantus, a Coffee Infused Imperial Stout at 3% of the blend.

The resulting beer becomes an intense sipper offering a unique and rich experience. Prominent flavors include slightly bitter chocolate, toffee and a smooth bourbon. The mouth feel is delightfully smooth with a light weight encouraging one to savor. This beer will likely age nicely and offers intriguing possibilities for use in recipes such as cookies or a rich marinade. It can be found in Arizona at local craft beer sellers such as Pa-pago Brewing and Taste of Tops. www.az.girlspintout.com

This long-time bar, known for giving many local bands their start, contin-ues to be a hotbed of the local music scene and follows a long standing tradition of never charging a cover. Yucca offers live music 7 days a week. Most recently, about a year ago, the Yucca expanded into the space next door, opening a craft beer and whis-key lounge. This new space is also home to the Speakeasy Pizza, offering pizza and wings to satisfy the late night munchies. You can get it by the slice, or whole pies.

The Yucca now houses 28 draft handles with new seasonals every week, in addition to the staples like Four Peaks, Bells, Lagunitas, Deschuttes and Left Hand. They also offer hundreds of bottled and canned beers with numerous selec-tions such as Bear Republic, Ballast Point, Rogue and Oskar Blues. As for whiskey, you will find a huge selection of single malts and blends in addition to all other spirits. In the speakeasy fashion, the decor is deep green, with wooden bar and accents. Yucca opens at 6AM every day of the week, and the craft beer whiskey side opens at 4PM Monday through Friday and 11AM Saturday and Sunday.

G-Star RAW Grand Opening Party Fri Nov 19th

G-Star stores are literally all over the world as well as across the U.S.; now Scottsdale is being brought into the loop of fashion with G-Star’s grand opening! What we are celebrating is a fashion movement dedicated to sleek modern design and innovative fashion. G-Star RAW takes denim fashion to new ideals and invites you to see exactly how. This Fri, a kick-off party will ensue with a fashion show of what you can expect to see from the line this Fall. Enjoy live music and catering by Sushi Roku, after all raw goes with RAW- clever. This in-store party goes from 7pm-9pm. Be the first to know the trend before everyone else catches on! 480.970.0707 RSVP at www.facebook.com/GStarRawScotts-dale and write “RSVP” on the wall

Arizona Russian Festival Sat Nov 20th

Ah yes Russia, believe it or not there is more to it than post-communism, bears and vodka. Here is your chance to see it for yourself. Brought to you by the Holy Archangels Orthodox Church, this celebration will feature live enter-tainment, workshops, movies, crafts and of course food! Let’s go through the list of why you need to go. Plenty of live entertainment including the Az Balalaika Orchestra, Kalinka Az Russian Folk Ensemble, Phoenix International Folk Dancers, Riznica Chamber Choir, harpist, as well as Russian vocalists. As we munch on some blini (filled crepes), let’s check out the artwork; Russian artists will be showcasing fine art in oil, acrylic, watercolor and pastel. Time for another bite! This time let’s get some vareniki (stuffed dumplings ranging from potato to berries), we will savor them as we check out a lecture on Iconography or maybe view a Film presentation. Now it’s time for the real deal, lets invoke our inner James Bond and try some caviar- I promise its good, vodka martini or not! Borsh is next on the agenda because we really want to get the full experience and because we are just that hardcore. Watch the games, join in on the dances, judge the costume contest and have a shot of

vodka....I’m sure someone will have it on them. Nazdarovia! 10am-5pm www.rocoraz.org/arizonarussianfestival/

Discover India Festival Sun Nov 21st Exotic India may be a world away and attainable only by the Travel Channel, however we have a bit of hope. We may not be able to get a first hand view, but we can sample a small taste of what should be a mouthful of flavor. I attend-ed this event the previous time so let me tell you what stood out. Let’s start with the jewelry bazaar that was first to catch my eye. Basically impossible to ignore stands of glittering jeweled earrings, bracelets, and hair ornaments. Not your typical selection of rhinestone necklaces. Second came the food, all delicious and everyone’s favorite part of a cultural celebration. Homemade meats, breads, curries and a few things that may not ring too familiar - and are exactly why they need to be tasted. Third, I pay trib-ute to the performances. A small stage was set up with traditional Indian dances done by solo artists as well as dance groups. The show really reminded you how different the other side of the world is, and yet it is still a dance isn’t it? Point is, have fun and open your eyes to the East. 11am-6pm at Heritage Science Park 602-690-7301 or 480-390-4316

KICK OFF THANKSGIV-ING WEEKEND WITH PHOENIX’S FAVORITE COMEDIAN PABLO FRANCISCO

Special Wednesday Performance Novem-ber 24th and Post Holiday Shows November 26th - 28th at The Tempe Improv

November 24th and 26th – 28th The Improv in Tempe, AZ welcomes back comedian Pablo Francisco. Pablo continues to bring his audiences to their feet with boisterous laughter and applause. He weaves together his arsenal of characters, spontane-ous outbursts, and clever insights to create a stand-up show that more resembles an hour-long comedic jazz riff. He is an off-the-wall, animated character that points out the ab-surdity in an illogical, pop-culture obsessed world.

His unmatched take on all things pop culture has taken him into the ranks of the most popular touring come-dians worldwide. Pablo’s enormous popularity continues to sour driving his Myspace Comedy page into the top three most visited on the site. His outrageously funny material has hooked millions of viewers on his YouTube channel www.youtube.com/pablofranciscocomedy .

Pablo will embark on his forth Euro-pean tour in fall of 2010. His inter-

national profile continues to grow. He sold out the world renowned Milky Way in Amsterdam and his show at the Troxy in London, sold over 26,000 tickets on his third 16 city tour of Sweden. Concurrently, Pablo is building his new one hour Comedy Central special to be filmed this year while packing colleges and major concert venues across the country. Francisco recently contrib-uted self-produced content to digital campaigns for Nokia, Absolut and Rhapsody. Pablo also performed at the Australia Comedy Festival this past spring.

It is not uncommon to sense the an-ticipation of Pablo’s audience as his fans await their favorite impressions, while being surprised by his unpre-dictable transformations. Those who experience Pablo’s show for the first time find themselves captivated by his hilarious dead on impressions. Gene Lavanchy of FOX – TV Boston calls Pablo “the most talented come-dian in the business today”. His unbe-lievable ability to physically morph himself into movie stars, singers, friends, family, and a multitude of nationalities give Pablo’s show a universal appeal. His drop-dead funny spoofing often leaves his audi-ences struggling to catch their breath which is the driving force behind his huge success. His rendition of the intensely melodramatic Spanish language soap operas on Telemundo and his narration of the action-movie preview with Arnold Schwarzenegger as a tortilla vendor bring screams of

laughter coast to coast. This gifted performer continues to thrive on his creativity and the spontaneity of standup comedy selling out concert venues, universities and comedy clubs alike. Pablo continually pushes the envelope, constantly refining new material and frighteningly accurate embodiments.

Pablo’s own critically acclaimed ONE HOUR special on Comedy Central entitled “OUCH!” continues to stay on the network’s most requested list. DVDTALK calls “OUCH!” “Truly origi-nal and funny.” His much anticipated follow-up Comedy Central Special is due out in 2010. In addition to his Comedy Central specials, Pablo has appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”, Comedy Central’s “The Show Biz Show w/ David Spade” and “Mind of Mencia”. He has also been a cast member on the Fox Network’s sketch comedy show “Mad TV,” TBS’s “Frank TV,” and made his debut ap-pearance on Howard Stern’s radio show in 2009.

Pablo’s DVD “OUCH!” is available in

major retail stores nationwide and at www.pablofrancisco.com or www.myspace.com/pablofrancisco.
