From the President: I'd like to thank Kerry Lucas, and her daughter Tara, for all their hard work in organising the casserole dinner at the Mountain Creek Bush Camp in Tawonga on June 25. It was a great success with over 100 people there and some seriously yummy food. We need a bigger venue! Thanks also to Ian Franzke for his very interesting presentation about his ski trek up near the north pole last summer. Congratulations to Bob Flower, Marg Trnka and Tilly Pascoe on their awards (see reports elsewhere). And thank-you to all who pitched in with the dishes or the packing up afterwards. Our next event is the Mid Year Dinner at Rois restaurant in Tawonga on Thursday July 28. Happy skiing Helen L'Huillier

Birkebeiner Search and Rescue Report Recent Search Our group was called out on Monday 6th June to assist Police in locating a missing deer hunter in the Mt Buller area. The search was conducted in steep, thick bush and in extremely cold, snowing conditions. Ian Franzke drove to Mansfield Police Station to meet searchers at 4:00am on Tuesday. A second callout requesting more searchers was made on Wednesday evening. David Panozzo, Matt O’Keeffe and Jeremy Rosewarne left Mt Beauty Police Station at 4:00am to travel to search headquarters near Mt Buller. After two days of hard searching and camping overnight in thick bush, our group returned to Mt Beauty. Searchers found no trace of the missing hunter. Thanks to our four volunteers for their fine effort. Steep Snow and Ice Training 2011 David Panozzo and Ian Franzke will be spending two weekends in training. The snow and ice practical training will take place at Mt Buller. Philip Evans, Bush Search and Rescue.
Skidoo Room Birkebeiner Club House BNSC members recently had 3 full-day working bees at our club house to extend the skidoo room. Our new skidoo is bigger, longer, better and did not fit in the previous space. Day 1: Area cleaned up, boxing erected, large concrete slab poured along the entire length of the club-house and skidoo room. Day 2: Old doors and existing frame removed, new frame erected to lock-up stage Day 3: Inside lining and exterior completed. A load of gravel was placed around concrete slab for easy access to club house. All the new framing material, corrugated iron and screws ……. donated by Rob Boland. Thanks to Rob Boland, Jim Crebbin, Brian Keeble, Bill Little and Philip Evans for their time, expertise and effort.

Birkebeiner Classic and Ski De Femme
Volunteers needed to help conduct these two events.
Saturday 9th July. Birkebeiner Classic The BNSC Race Committee is conducting this years “Birkebeiner Classic” on Saturday 9th July starting at 10.00 am in the Nordic Bowl at Falls Creek. The Race Committee has appointed “Chiefs” to organise the event but it needs about 12 volunteers to help run the event. There are a number of positions that need to be filled
• Timing. Bill Little is “Chief of Timing” and needs a couple of volunteers to help time the events. Bill will provide all the instruction needed to perform this task.
• Judges. All the races are mass start and thus there could be some close finishes. A couple of volunteers are needed to judge all events.
• Food & Drink Station. A finish food and drink station will be set up in the Nordic Bowl and we need a volunteer to run this station.
• Bib Collection. When the competitors finish we need a volunteer to collect the race bibs.
• Course Marshals. We always need a few volunteers to ski out to a number of places around the course to act as course marshals.
All Volunteers are asked to report to the Race Hut in the Nordic Bowl by 9.30 am. There will be a Volunteer Coordinator in the Race Hut who will allocate the tasks and explain to each volunteer the task they will be asked to perform. Experienced volunteers, who have performed these tasks in the past, are always welcome but so are “first time volunteers”. These volunteers will be given tasks that they feel comfortable with and will be given extra “first class instruction” on how to perform their task. If you can help please contact Brian Keeble at 57544910 or [email protected]
Sunday 10th July Ski de Femme The Ski de Femme is an event conducted by the BNSC for women and girls. It has two components, 10.00 am to about 12.00 noon Free instruction for women and girls that is coordinated
by Ronice Goebel (57544910 or 0409332642)

Birkie Report –Holmenkollen, Oslo, Norway When FIS announced Oslo, Norway, as the venue for the 2011 World Championships competing there became the top goal of mine. I had never actually raced in Norway although I had heard some very im-pressive stories from the country where cross country skiing is their national sport. This World Champi-onships was one that I didn’t want to miss! The 2010 -11 international season went quite well for me and consisted of travelling to eight countries over 18 weeks and competing in 23 races. I had qualified for World Championships the season before so I now needed to rock up, in good shape and healthy... We arrived in Oslo three days before the official events began, and the size and importance of this event for the Norwegians soon became obvious. You know XC skiing is big in Norway when you see their waxing set up. A truck (a semi trailer) painted with the faces of their national team athletes on the side. Another tell tale sign was the amount of xc in-spired advertising. Walking past the shampoo section in a supermarket I noticed a dozen billboards fea-turing Therese Johaug, the eventual winner of the 30km skate at the World Championships. Johaug, who the boys will tell you is not too hard on the eye was not the only cross country skiing athlete to feature in the supermarket. TV was saturated with a similar advertising focus, featuring almost half the Norwegian cross country ski team in a variety of commercials! The first official race of the Championships was my favourite event, the Skate Sprint. As usual the night before the event the start list was produced. With the possibility of snow on race day the officials put the ‘seed group’ (best skiers) behind 10 other competitors…of which I was number 6. Starting 6th was a little bit daunting as usually I start in the final third of the start list. Starting number 6, on the first race of a Norwegian World Championships was incredible. There were around 45 000 ex-cited people crowding the stands and every bit of hill space to watch the time trial. By way of contrast, at most other International XC events the majority of spectators don’t bother coming until the finals start. But the Norwegian XC culture is different …. if you had waited until the finals, you wouldn’t have been able to find a spare centre metre on which to stand. Now Norwegian’s barrack loud, for every-one, (although often a touch quieter for the Swedish athletes), and being start number 6 meant the entire crowd was totally involved in anticipation of what would unfold. I was excited, there was so much noise. I crossed the line and listened to the commentator over the loud speaker, “Esther Bottomley in a surprising first position”, pretty fun to be in that position, even if it was only for a few seconds until Sadie Bjornsen of USA came through behind me with a great time to end up 28th in the time trail. I ended up 44th out of 86, my best world championships result and one of the most enjoyable race experi-ences. I also did the 15km pursuit. This day the fog came in and visibility went down to about 15-20m, which made skiing the track quite challenging on one or two of the downhill sections. Although I couldn’t see much, I certainly could hear a lot. The crowds of around 60 000 people went crazy whenever an athlete could be sighted. Nearly the whole way round the track there was noise, urging you on and encouraging you to push harder, which you really do with so much scheering, it was almost a relief when there were-n’t many spectators, it gave you a moment to sort out your thoughts. The evening of this event I went into Oslo to see the presentation ceremony. The Norwegian favourite Marit Bjoergen had won her second of two events, needless to say the presentation ceremony was a crowded affair. After a couple of days of event watching at the World Championships and a little tourist time I went back to Switzerland to get ready for the Engadin marathon. On the way to the airport the taxi driver pointed to a sports arena and said to me “U2 performed there a few months ago to a crowd of 25 000 people. Marit Bjoergen wins gold in Oslo and 100 000 people crowd the streets to watch her receive the gold medal!” I guess I shouldn’t be so surprised at the Norwegian’s love of their sport and their sporting heroes. There are some parallels between the Norwegian crowds and those mad AFL football supporters. Occasionally the papers back home feature photographs and articles of diehard supporters camping out to buy tickets to the footy finals. Well over there the Norwegians buy tickets to camp out at the far end of the race

tracks, in the freezing conditions in order to see their XC heroes racing against the world’s best. Thanks again to the BNSC for supporting me for yet another season. I appreciate all the hard work that so many people contribute to the club and cross country skiing. There is something very special about skiing in the natural and certainly ‘quieter’ environment available at Falls Creek. Let’s hope the snow starts coming down soon, and we can all get out there and have a great winter. Esther Bottomley

Casserole Dinner Report What a turn out! About 100 made an effort to come out on a cold winters night to fill the room at the Mt. Beauty Bush Lodge for the "casserole dinner". It was great to catch up with friends and get inspired for the up and coming ski season, quite a few peo-ple that I spoke to had already been for a ski! The night was a huge success with so many yummy casseroles and deserts made by the members and families. The presentations were great and everyone was excited to see the life membership awarded to Bob Flower who has done so much for the club in the past. I would like to thank Ian Franzke for a very interesting talk on his trip to Spitsbergen Islands Norway. It sounded like an awesome adventure, but not something I would care to do! A big thank-you to all the cooks, helpers in the kitchen and the ones that stayed back to clean up. Kerry Lucas
