A 5 year guarantee covers Conex Bänninger >B< Press Valves against faults caused by defective manufacture. It does not cover faults arising from incorrect installation. The guarantee covers installation with type A and B copper tube conforming to AS1432 but does not cover any faults arising from competitor products used on the same installation nor faults caused by damaged >B< Press Valves (through excessive pressure, for example) where competitor products created non-compliant conditions.

All >B< Press fittings must be installed by a licensed plumber.

3: Guarantee

1: >B< Press Key Features• Flame free installation takes away risk of fire on site.

• Reliable simplicity – Simple, quick and reliable installation provides low installed cost.

• Fully certified – Third party certification offers peace of mind to the client, specifier and installer.

• Permanent joint – Secure, permanent joint crimped both sides of deep set O-ring ensures fitting cannot be tampered with.

• Practical by design – Lead-in edge aids installation and helps protect O-ring from damage or displacement.

• Leak indicator – The unique pressing indicator in the O-ring shows leaks at low pressures when fittings are not pressed.

Conex Bänninger >B< Press Quarter Turn Ball Valves are designed to work alongside >B< Press fittings and can be relied upon for precision and durability. The valves are manufactured from DR brass, giving high dezincification resistance in corrosive conditions. The range includes valves suitable for water applications, including hot and cold drinking water; in addition to valves suitable for gas applications, including LPG and natural gas. Conex Bänninger >B< Press Quarter Turn Ball Valves are certified to AS5830 for water or AS4617 for gas and are available in sizes DN15-25.

2.1: O-ring

>B< Press Quarter Turn Ball Valves for water applications are identified with a black O-ring and a blue handle. For natural gas and LPG applications, valves are identified by a yellow coloured O-ring and a yellow handle. The WaterMark and GasMark markings are also present on the valve body. *Important Note: The O-ring colour and identification must meet the application. O-rings in the valves are not to be removed or changed.

2.2: Pressing indicator (PI) feature

The unique pressing indicator is a specially designed O-ring. It has a reduced section in two positions that allows water or air past the sealing element of any

unpressed connection, thereby providing a visible leakage point during the commissioning of the system.

Unpressed fittings are identified by pressurising the system with a range of 100 kPa to 500 kPa for water (prior to the final pressure testing) and 2.2 kPa to 300 kPa for gas.

When the fitting is pressed, the O-ring material compresses, filling the gaps, creating a leak-free joint.

Final testing of the system should be conducted in accordance with AS/NZS 3500 and/or AS/NZS 5601.

2: Product Features

Water – EPDM Gas – HNBR

UnpressedUnpressed connections will be identified in the pressure test, as water will be visibly leaking when water flows past the sealing element. Leak detector spray should be used to identify unpressed gas valves.

Pressing

When an unpressed joint is identified check the tube is fully inserted and press.

Pressed

Resulting in a leak-proof fully pressed permanent connection, which cannot be rotated.

4: Approvals and Certification Conex Bänninger is an ISO 9001 Quality assured company. In addition, WaterMark and GasMark approvals apply in Australia.

Conex Bänninger has approvals from numerous national and international bodies including DVGW, KIWA, GASTEC, WRAS and AENOR, plus many well-known others.

5: Technical Data >B< Press Quarter Turn Ball Valves are suitable for use with hard, half hard or annealed type A and B copper tubecomplying with AS1432.

5.1: Pressure and temperaturePressure and temperature rating

Valve series Size (DN) PN Maximum Operating Parameters

Water (blue handle) 15 to 20 16 1600 kPa from -20° to 95°C

Gas (yellow handle) 15 to 20 10 1050 kPa from -20° to 100°C

Valves should only be installed in a system where the normal pressure and temperature does not exceed the stated rating of the valve. The maximum allowable pressure in valves as specified in standards is for non-shock conditions. Systems which create water hammer or impact should be avoided. Where system testing will subject a valve to pressures in excess of the working pressure rating, such testing should be within the “shell test pressure” for the body, to a maximum of 1.5 times the PN rating given for the valve. Any such test should be carried out with the valve in the fully open condition.

Conex Bänninger Quarter Turn Ball Valves may be fitted in any position provided that due consideration is given to the way in which the valve is to be operated. These valves are intended for isolation use only. They should not be used for the regulation of flow or for throttling as this may impair the ability of the valve to seal correctly should the flow damage the seating elements of the valve.

The Conex Bänninger Quarter Turn Ball Valves are by the nature of their design capable of allowing the fluid to flow in either direction.

The installer should ensure that appropriate flushing and cleaning of the pipe runs is completed during installation and commissioning as this will assist in extending the life of components used in the system.

7: Design Considerations

Pipework support

All pipework should be supported by the use of appropriate clips, brackets or supports. Please refer to requirements listed in AS/NZS 3500 for specific details in relation to the particular application.

Distance between fittings

Due to the reforming of the tube profile when pressed, it is advised that a minimum distance, is allowed between >B< Press valves and other plumbing fittings.

Tube Size Minimum Clearance F (mm)

15mm 5

20mm 5

Minimum clearance requirements

The following minimum clearances are required from structural components to allow operation of the tool for press fitting.

Tube Size Minimum Clearance (mm)

Romax Compact Romax 3000

15 – 20mm 35 45

Pipework protection

Copper has a high resistance against corrosion. However, in some cases external protection may be necessary against corrosive conditions. Refer to AS/NZS 3500 for full pipework protection requirements.

Localised annealing

To ensure proper sealing when pressing next to an existing brazed fitting, the following minimum distances must be maintained.

Tube Size Minimum Clearance F (mm)

15mm 5

20mm 5

Note: It is important that there is no residual solder or other foreign debris on the tubing to be inserted into the >B< Press end. The surface condition on the area ofpress joint should be as tube standard AS 1432.

Brazing near >B< Press joints

Caution – Brazing or soldering near to >B< Press joints should be avoided as this may cause the seal to degrade due to heat transfer. The table below states the minimum distance away from the press joint which is acceptable to braze. If this distance cannot be maintained then adequate precautions must be taken such as fabricating the brazed section prior to assembly with the press fittings, wrapping in a wet rag or applying a heat barrier spray, to prevent heat transfer to the press valve during brazing. Products such as Viper Wet Rag or Hot Block can also be used for the same effect.

Tube Size Minimum Clearance F (mm)

15mm 350

20mm 500

Flushing of water installations

When the installation is complete, it is essential to flush with water to remove dust and debris in accordance with AS/NZS 3500.

Testing and commissioning installations

The unique Pressing Indicator is a specially designed O-ring. It has a reduced section in two positions thatallows water or air past the sealing element of anyunpressed connection, thereby providing a visibleleakage point during the commissioning of the system.Unpressed valves are identified by pressurising thesystem with a range of 100kPa to 500 kPa for water and2.2 kPa to 300 kPa for gas. When the valve connection ispressed the O-ring material compresses, filling the gapsand creating a leak free joint. Final testing of the systemshould be conducted in accordance with AS/NZS 3500and/or AS/NZS 5601.

Location and end of line service

To allow for ease of operation, maintenance and repair, the location of the valve should be based on good practice and ease of access during the system design stage. Valves must be adequately supported to prevent undue strain being placed on the valve seat in any working condition.

Earth continuity

>B< Press Quarter Turn Ball Valves maintain earthcontinuity without the need for additional continuitystraps.

Fittings in freezing temperatures

Copper tube and press valves should be protected against freezing. Expansion of the water when it freezes can cause damage to the pipe or valve.F

To install >B< Press, a Rothenberger Romax or Compact mechanical tool with compatible sized jaw to fit each size valve is required. When pressure is exerted through the press tool, a permanent joint is made and the valve cannot be disassembled or re-used. >B< Press valves have the advantage of a 3-point press installation which makes it more secure, through a press either side of the bead and a press crimping the O-ring.

1. Cut the tube

4. Mark insertion depth

2. Remove burrs

5. Ensure tube is inserted upto the tube stop

3. Inspect the valve

6. Complete the joint with thecompression tool

We recommend you use a Rothenberger tube cutter. It is important to ensure that the tube is cut completely square. Tube ends should be clean and free from scratches not less than the socket length.

The tube must be fully inserted into the press end until it reaches the tube stop in order to make a perfect joint. When inserting, turn the tube slightly to ease the tube over the O-ring. Marking insertion depth will ensure that any tube movement is detected, which is especially important if the joints are to be pressed at a later time.

Make sure that the internal and external tube end is free from burrs and sharp edges by using a deburring tool to prevent damage to the O-ring. Then wipe the tube end clean to avoid damaging the O-ring on tube insertion.

To assemble the joint, the tube must be inserted into the fitting up to the tube stop. (Use the mark on the tube which was made earlier as reference.) The pressing operation should only be undertaken when the tube reaches the tube stop.

Unpack the valve and verify that the flow paths are clean and unobstructed. Ensure that no debris is present. Check the body and lever markings to ensure the correct valve has been selected for installation. Before inserting the copper tube, ensure that the O-ring is seated correctly, lubricated and free from damage.

Ensure that the correct size jaw for the fitting is inserted into the tool. The jaws must be placed square on the fitting. Depress and hold the button of the tool until the press cycle is complete. Now release the jaws from around the fitting. (For further information refer to complete Romax instructions.)

8: Installation Instructions

9: OperationConex Bänninger Quarter Turn Ball Valves are only intended for use in the fully open or closed position and should not be used for regulating or throttling flow.

Lever handle variants

To open the valve, turn the lever through 90 degrees so that it is in line with the tube run in which the valve is installed. To close, turn the lever through 90 degrees so that the lever is at right angles to the tube run in which the valve is installed. Full opening and closing is achieved when the lever stops are in contact with the stop points on the valve body.

10: MaintenanceProvided a valve is correctly selected for the applicable service conditions, it should provide years of trouble free service following correct installation and adequate preventative maintenance. A regular routine maintenance programme is the most effective method of ensuring operating efficiency for the long term.

When developing a maintenance programme, care should be taken to include a detailed risk assessment and method statement for how any maintenance work will be completed. The assessment should include the consideration of potential hazards. This must include a visual check of the valve condition and consideration must also be given to the possibilities for any unforeseen conditions which might lead to valve failure. System debris should be collected using the appropriate type of strainer or filter device.

11: CautionPerformance data, including pressure-temperature ratings have been developed from published standards, supplier material specifications, design calculations and in-house testing. They cover typical applications for the Conex Bänninger valve product range and are provided as a general guideline to end users.

For specific applications users are advised to contact Conex Bänninger for technical advice, or to complete their own evaluation to prove technical suitability of the products. Failure to follow this may result in damage and personal injury for which the company cannot be held liable. Conex Bänninger maintains a policy of continual product improvement and, therefore, reserves the right to change specifications, design and materials of its products without prior notice.

12: Health and SafetyPrior to commencing installation work on any system a risk assessment must be completed so that consideration is given to the possibility of operational limits being exceeded and to eliminate or reduce the potential for hazards.

a) Protective clothing and safety equipment must beused as appropriate to the hazard presented by thenature of the system to which the valve is fitted or beingassembled. All appropriate health and safety rules mustbe applied when maintaining or installing valves.

b) Prior to removing or installing any valve, the circulatingpumps (where fitted) must be turned off. The pipelineshould be depressurised, drained and vented. Allvalves should be in the fully open position to ensure therelease of any pipeline or valve pressure.

c) The valve selected for service must meet the requiredservice conditions. The pressure and temperaturelimitations are clearly stated in the technical datasection of this document, and these should not beexceeded.

d) Valve seals, valve seats and components can bedamaged by debris carried in the pipeline. To assist indamage prevention system designers and installersshould allow for the use of strainers and other protectivedevices to be fitted. Systems should be flushed beforeuse with all valves open. Fluids used for system flushingshould be selected to ensure that they do not damagevalve components.

e) Conex Bänninger valves are not designed to withstandthe effects of fire, earthquake, wind and traffic. Thevalves manufactured by Conex Bänninger are notsuitable for fire testing, fire hazard environments, corrosive fluids or fluids which contain abrasives. Noallowance is made for corrosion, or the decompositionof unstable fluids and they should not be used wherethese conditions may occur.
