DecisionMaking TimeSo with just over a week to go before the elections, I wonder how manyof you have made up your minds which way you will be voting.

If the pollsters are correct, it looks like it’s going to be the closestGeneral Election for a very long time. With the televising of a number ofleader debates, we are probably more familiar with a wider range of partyleaders than we have ever known before with Plaid Cymru, the GreenParty and the Scottish Nationalist parties being given valuable air time. Here in Earls Barton, we will be choosing between the Conservatives,Labour, UKIP, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party. How will wemake our choice; will it be based on our faith in the party leader andwhether we like the looks of that person, is it to do with the policies thatare being offered or is our decision is made on local matters and who wethink will best serve the Daventry constituency?

On May 7th, we will also be voting for our borough and parish councillors. You can find out who the candidates are inside the magazine.

There is also a drop in session being held on Friday 1st May at the YouthClub between 6.00 and 8.00pm, where we can meet and talk to the parishcouncil candidates.

Let’s hope that the decision making process is not too painful foreveryone. We will have a full list of results in next month’s magazine.

“Waiting hurts. Forgetting hurts. But not knowing which decision to take can sometimes be the most painful...”

?An Idiot’s Guide ToThe May 7th Elections...If you are on the electoral register, you will receive a poll card before the election telling you whereand when to vote. The polling station for Earls Barton is the Junior School. The poll card is for yourinformation only – you do not need to take it to the polling station in order to vote.

How voting in person works:

1. On Election Day, go to your local polling station. Polling stations are open between 7am and 10pm. If you need assistance getting to the polling station, contact your electoral registration office to find out if they can help. You can also ask to have a companion with you when you vote, or staff in the polling station may be able to help you.

2. Tell the staff inside the polling station your name and address so they can check that you are on the electoral register. You can show them your poll card, but you do not need it to vote.

3. The staff at the polling station will give you a ballot paper listing the parties and candidates you can vote for. You maybe given more than one ballot paper if there is more than one election on the same day. If you have a visual impairment, you can ask for a special voting device that allows you to vote on your own in secret.

4. Take your ballot paper into a polling booth so that no one can see how you vote. Read the ballot paper carefully, it will tell you how to cast your vote. Do not write anything else on the paper or your vote may not be counted.

5. Finally, when you have marked your vote, fold the ballot paper in half and put it in the ballot box. Do not let anyone see your vote. If you are not clear on what to do, ask the staff at the polling station to help you.

In Earls Barton, elections are being held at three levels; for our local parish councillors, our borough councillors and ourlocal MP. Here are the candidates that you can choose from:

1. Parish Councillors: 13 out of 17 to be elected

Irene Abbott Jayne Bond Martin Cahill Ben Chapman Steve Dodds

Steve Glover Robert Gough Mick Higham Jason Macleod Wayne Mills

Peter Morrall Linda Morrison Roger Page Richard Paintin Malc Perkins

Becky Rice Colin Wells

2. Borough Councillors: 3 out of 7 to be elected

Ben Chapman - Labour Party

Nick Chapman - Labour Party

Mark Gee - UK Independence Party

Robert Gough - Conservative Party

Peter Morrall - Conservative Party

Laura Stevenson - Conservative Party

Colin Wells - Labour Party

3. Member of Parliament: 1 out of 6 to be elected

Abigail Campbell - Labour Party

Calum Delhoy - Liberal Democrat Party

Michael Gerard - United Kingdom Independence Party

Chris Heaton-Harris - Conservative Party

Steve Whiffen - Green Party

We will publish the outcome of the elections in the June edition of Barton Today.

In the April edition of Barton Today, it was announced that a newrailway line linking Northampton to Peterborough was to beopened in 2020, including a station at Earls Barton.

Unfortunately, government ministers have confirmed that theplans have had to be abandoned. The Rt Hon Patrick MacMahon,Secretary of State for Transport said, “Whilst there weresufficient funds to pay for the line itself, the village did not haveenough money to pay for the required infrastructure.

It was a difficult choice for the Parish Councillors. If they hadopted for the light railway link between the station and thevillage square, it would have left them with too little money tomow the rec.”

A Parish Council spokesperson stated, “Yes, we are verydisappointed but I know our villagers would rather have a well-kept rec than a new train line. We have heard however, thatthere may be new funding available next April.”

While we werecelebrating Easter, some people werealready thinkingabout Christmas!Who? Well, Stephen Morris,Traidcraft’s Quality Officer, has justbeen in Palestine at the visitingartisans from the Holy LandHandicraft Cooperative Society(HLHCS), where we sourcebeautifully made olive woodproducts.

There he met Waseem(pictured), who is workingmaking some of the stablesfor Traidcraft's nativity sets. There is a high unemployment rate for younger people likeWaseem so sales of handicrafts provide him with a fair income.

He says: "HLHCS supports me very well, and they pay me on time. With other customers the payment is often late or they don’t payme at all."

You can buy other olive wood products from Palestine which makegreat gifts for all sorts of occasions all year round and we stockmany of these in our shop.

We keep extending our range of foods... including all the lovely PalestinianZaytoun range of olive oil, almonds, maftoul couscous. We also have sometasty chilli sauces from Africa whichwere tried and enjoyed by many whocame to our Spring Preview evening..

A New Chapter for Earls Barton Library We are delighted to report that the launch weekend of the ‘Friends ofEarls Barton Library’, which took place in April, was a resoundingsuccess. Lots of people came to see what we were all about, enjoyedtea and cakes, bought books, made donations and signed up to jointhe Friends. We were able to welcome old friends and made lots ofnew ones. We had visits from other Friends groups and even managedto tempt a Parish Councillor to join us!

As you can see, we had managed to collect several hundred books ona wide variety of subjects and the sight of these brought a number ofpeople to the library. At very competitive prices, the books provedextremely popular and not many visitors went home empty handed.

The highlight of the weekend was the presentation, by Andrea Nolan, representing Barton Today, of a cheque for£276.00. The Friends first, ambitious plan, is to introduce a film club at the library. A local resident has kindly donated ascreen for this but many more hundreds of pounds are needed to buy a projector and sound system to get theproject off the ground. The marvellous donation from Barton Today will enable the Friends to buy the licence theyneed in order to show films to the public.

As always, the Earls Barton Fire and Rescue Show runs alongside it, with a large array of Fire Engines and appliances, and the chance to talk to the owners about the huge differences from the early hand pumped models up to the highlycomplex ones of the modern era. There are also demonstrations and 'sketches' on things like chip pan or bar-b-quefires, and possibly car accident rescues etc.

We also have trade and craft stands, food outlets and a beer tent, plus a Play Bus to amuse the children. The event isopen 10am to 5pm each day, and admission costs are: £6 adults £4 OAPs and children £15 family (2+2).

There is an amount of public camping available, details from us at the phone number below. Plus we still have space fortrade and craft stands, application forms for these can be downloaded from the website (www.festivaloftransport.net) orcontact us and we will forward one to you. Exhibitor numbers are currently up on last year, but you can still contact usfor entry into the transport section, in the same way.

We look forward to seeing you at the event, and hope for good (well reasonable) weather so you can enjoy it along with us.

Jonathan writes...As I have stated on many occasions I have always loved the SalvationArmy, and respect their work immensely.

Their service amongst the homeless, poor and outcasts of societyis, in my view, second to none.

When we were on holiday in Kessingland, near Lowestoft last year,we went on the Sunday morning to the Salvation Army Citadel inLowestoft. As always, the worship was lively, with the songstersand band being a great inspiration.

After the service we enjoyed tea and cake, and I met with agentleman who had been in the Salvation Army since his youth. Nownearly 80, he told me that in his early days, things were fairly strict, with the Salvation Army sharing many of the ranks and terms of theregular army.

Now, in the regular army the term AWOL is short for “absent withoutleave” as we all know, but back then the young recruits to theSalvation Army used the term differently. If they weren’t with theircolleagues actively spreading the good word, they were encouragedto be AWOL or “Active in Works of Love”. That speaks volumesabout their Christian faith in action.

In his ministry Jesus went about doing good, serving the needy, giving hope to the lost, and reaching out to those whom societyrejected.

On one occasion Jesus was approached by a leper. These were apeople isolated by society, looked upon as “unclean”, and incurablein almost every case. Jesus changed brokenness into beauty as Hereached out and touched him. “Be healed,” Jesus said and instantlythe leprosy disappeared.

Jesus chose as His disciples, people who he seemed to know wouldmake mistakes. They were certainly not the kind of people we wouldreadily choose for a worldwide mission of love and service. Theywere flawed in many ways, and proved their faithlessness on manyoccasions, but particularly at the cross. Yet Jesus loved them justas they were, warts and all, and that love never died for them, evenwhen they deserted him and fled from the cross. He forgave themtheir shortcomings, and because they had been forgiven much, theylearnt to love much. It is quite clear that at the potter’s wheel Godremoulds lives, and uses them to reveal His beauty and wonder. Wemust never underestimate God’s power to change and transformlives.

Jesus also chose to challenge the narrow laws that so often boundpeople.

On one day Jesus visited the Temple. A considerable crowdgathered, and he sat down and taught them. As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a womanwho had been caught in the act of adultery. Not much chance forher then, considering that the law of Moses stated that such peopleshould be stoned. The leaders continued to try to trap Jesus. “Whatdid you say?” they said. Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dustwith his finger, and then as they still demanded an answer Jesusspoke, “Let the one who is without sin, cast the first stone.”

When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, untilonly Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman.

“Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemnyou?” “No Lord,” she said. Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sinno more.”

Works of love are beyond price, and are able to transform the worldfor good.

Few of us, if any, are likely to achieve greatness in the way in whichthe world judges greatness. However, true greatness I believe is tobe found in those whose hearts are filled with love. People who seekto do good, to care for others, and who walk clothed in humility. There is no greater power in the world than the power of Love, andthe more we learn of this, the closer we draw to the nature of God.

God bless and be with you all, Jonathan

Barton Today May 2015

Miranda Hayes writes....Easter may seem a long time ago now, but actuallyEaster lasts for 50 days, as the Church of England Common Worshipvolume, Times & Seasons, tells us: The Great Fifty Days of Eastertide forma single festival period in which the tone of joy created at the EasterVigilis sustained through the following seven weeks, and the Churchcelebrates the gloriously risen Christ:

Triumphant in his glory now, his sceptre ruleth all, earth, heaven and hellbefore him bow, and at his footstool fall. (Fulbert of Chartres)

Early Christians gave the name Pentecost to this whole fifty-day span ofrejoicing, which Tertullian calls ‘this most joyful period’ (laetissimumspatium). It is sometimes also called ‘Great Sunday’. In those placeswhere the custom of lighting the Easter Candle at the beginning of Easteris followed, the lit Candle stands prominently in church for all theEastertide services. The Alleluia appears frequently in liturgical speechand song; Morning Prayer begins with the traditional collection of Paulinetexts known as the Easter Anthems, and white or gold vestments anddecorations emphasize the joy and brightness of the season.

On the fortieth day there has from the late fourth century been a particularcelebration of Christ’s ascension. He commissions his disciples to continuehis work, he promises the gift of the Holy Spirit, and then he is no longeramong them in the flesh. The ascension is therefore closely connectedwith the theme of mission. The arrival of the promised gift of the Holy Spiriton the day of Pentecost completes and crowns the Easter Festival.

Ascension Day falls on 14th May this year, when there will be a saidservice inThe Lady Chapel at 11am. Then, ten days later, on Sunday, 24thMay, we celebrate Pentecost (or Whitsunday, as it used to be widelyknown).

Do join us as we joyfully mark what is, in some senses, the birthday of thechurch – the anniversary of the day when disciples first received the giftof the Holy Spirit; not a gift to keep to themselves, but to equip them in theirmissionary work in his world, as they proclaimed and lived out the Gospel.

We, too, are his disciples; we too, have received the gift of the Holy Spirit;we too, are commissioned by Christ to continue his work in the world; we,too, are missionaries, living and proclaiming the good news of Christ.

And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has beengiven to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in thename of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obeyeverything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, tothe end of the age.’ Matthew 28:18-20

Lyn White writes…Nearby Hillman Aerodrome has been host tovarious activities since WWII, and in recent times this includes sky-diving. Ideally flat, and half-way between Perth and Albany, Hillmanwas one of a number of aerodromes constructed in 1942 at intervalsof eighty miles from the coast, ideal take-off distance in the eventof a Japanese invasion. Now on cleared farming property, there isno indication of the sheer hard work carried out by hundreds ofmainly aged and invalid pensioners, due to the shortage ofmanpower, employed in its construction. Seven or eight men woulddig the soil away from a tree, six or seven feet from the trunk andabout five feet deep, then chip the roots away with axes. Bythrowing a plumbob on a line over a branch, they were able to attacha steel cable, hauling the tree down with a tractor. Around four milesof runways and approaches were cleared this way.

Fortunately, it was not needed for the purpose of war. Instead, inthe 1970s, a local motor sports club held its first event there, whilea local resident chose the site to apply for recognition in the GuinessBook of Records when he rode his trail bike for a distance of 3,360metres, seated backwards. Then in 1975 the West Australian Sky-divers’ Club set up a base at Hillman Farm. These days, the HillmanAerodrome regularly hosts a ‘Hercules 130’, bearing members ofthe SAS for training purposes. Occasionally the shadow of the vastgrey form swoops like a giant bird over my house!

Following an enthusiasticwelcome from Canberraresidents at his first and onlypublic appearance, Prince Harryis doing a tour of duty here inthe real sense. Now serving amonth-long deployment withthe Australian army, his firstposting at Darwin will see himjoin patrols with Aboriginal‘diggers’, and later in themonth train with the SAS inPerth. I’ll be ready to wavewhen the ‘Hercules 130’ visitsHillman Farm again, as there’sa faint chance Captain Walesmay be aboard! Should suchan event occur, it would neverbecome public knowledge, or ifit did, this quiet rural localitywould again be assured of aplace in history.

The only other occasion recorded is that of a murder which occurredmore than a hundred years ago. James O’Brien had beenhonourably discharged after serving 21 years with the Royal HorseArtillery. He and his Maltese wife migrated to Perth, but theneighbours became suspicious when she disappeared and he waslater convicted of murder. Reputedly mentally affected throughservice in the Boer War, he was sentenced to seven years’ gaol in1897, but was released on ticket-of-leave in 1901 due to clemencyextended to long-term prisoners in celebration of the foundation ofthe Federation. He moved into the Williams district and took upfarming.

Peter Hansen, a settler on a neighbouring property, was injuredwhile breaking in a horse, and local residents held a dance to raisefunds. When a friend called in to see him, unnoticed he cameacross O’Brien with the body of his neighbour on a wheelbarrow, with the obvious intention of placing it in the pigsty. He wasconvicted of the murder, but the jury added a recommendation ofmercy due to his age (58), but James O’Brien’s eventual fate is notrevealed in the records.

Concluding on a brighter note, generous rainfall in the last few daysmarks the change of seasons and could not be better timed in thesouth-west after a long, dry Summer. With the ground still warm, conditions are ideal for regeneration of pasture and, without doubt, that of the many thousands of hectares of bush which suffered sobadly in the bushfires. What could be more inspiring than the joy ofnew life?

Farewell GeorgeApril's Parish Council meeting was memorable as it was the lastmeeting for Cllr George Blackwell after over 40 years service onthe Parish Council. George has decided to stand down from theParish and Borough Councils at the election on 7 May.

At his final meeting, George was presented with a leaving gift bythe Chair, Cllr Martin Cahill, and was thanked for everything thathe has done for Earls Barton during his time as Parish, Boroughand County Councillor. We will all miss George's presence andwisdom at our meetings, but wish him a healthy, happy and long"retirement".

Fifty days after the Passover, according to the Jewish calendar, comes Pentecost, sometimes referred to in the Old Testament ofthe Bible as The Feast of Weeks. Fifty days was the number ofdays between the offering of the barley sheaf (the firstfruits) atthe beginning of the Passover and the completion of the barleyharvest. It was a holy day when no servile work was to be doneand when every male Israelite was required to appear at thesanctuary. It was a very special day – a day of joy and ofthanksgiving - and a reminder again of their deliverance fromEgypt as God’s covenant people.

No wonder then that the first disciples had come together. Theywanted to celebrate Pentecost but also wanted to talk more aboutJesus who had left them. But before He left them Jesus had toldthem to stay in Jerusalem and wait for the promise of the Father(Acts 1:4) and that they would receive power when the Holy Spirithad come upon them – power to be witnesses to Jesus (Acts 1:8)

God uses the special time of Pentecost, when there would be somany Israelites from all over Israel and abroad, to pour out HisHoly Spirit on the disciples. No wonder then that Israelites cameand gathered, bewildered, to the house where the disciples were.“Suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of aviolent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tonguerested on each one of them. All of them were filled with the HolySpirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gavethem ability” (Acts 2:1 – 4)

It might appear that there were one hundred and twenty disciplesat that time (Acts 1:15) but a crowd gathered when they heardwhat was happening in the house where the disciples were. Theyheard the apostle Peter’s first public sermon in which, twice, hestates the heart of the gospel – that Jesus was crucified and died, but God raised Him up having freed Him from death (Acts 2:23 &24) and that “God has made Him both Lord and Messiah (Christ)this Jesus whom you crucified” (Acts 2:32).

How many were in that crowd? Well, the effect of Peter’spreaching was that, “that day about three thousand persons wereadded” to the number of disciples. Three thousand peopleresponded to Peter’s preaching…that sounds similar to the effectof a Billy Graham crusade! Why and how so many? Because whenPeter told them about the resurrection and that Jesus was theMessiah they were “cut to the heart” and asked how they shouldrespond, “what should we do?”

Peter’s answer was simple. It was NOT “try and live a good life”.It was “Repent, and be baptized in the name of Jesus so that yoursins may be forgiven” (Acts 2:38). “The promise (of the HolySpirit) is for everyone whom the Lord our God calls to Him” (verse 39).

How do you respond to that? Is it just another story? Is itsomething you’ve heard so many times that you take no notice?Or is it something that you can respond to? It is never too late torespond to the Easter story!

1000 Years of House Building Steve Dodds, writes....With such a diverse style of property in our village I thought it would be interesting to comparemodern building techniques with those used by the builders of our oldest building, the Saxon church.

It used to be assumed that the only buildings the Anglo-Saxons made of stone were churches. Recent archaeologicalfinds have shown that some noblemen's halls were also being built of stone in the late Anglo-Saxon period.

ConstructionThe walls were made in many different ways, some were made from wattle and daub, others were planked in one of many ways, somewere even 'cavity walls' with moss or grass infill. Although there is no archaeological evidence for it, literature suggests that some ofthese wooden walled buildings may have been further strengthened by iron reinforcing bands.

In areas where wood was scarce, e.g. many of the Northern Isles, some buildings had stone or turf walls. In Iceland it is known thatentire buildings, including the roof, were made of turf. Some of the later Saxon Royal Manors may have been stone built, perhaps evenwith glass windows, probably influenced by continental stone palaces. Roofs were generally thatched although turf and wooden shinglesmay also have been used.

Large halls and manors may well have been surrounded by rampart walls and ditches so they became a fortified residence, such as thehall at Cheddar, or the late Saxon manor at Goltho, said by some to be England's first castle! Also within the wall would have been a well, latrines, a chapel, workshops, barns, pens for livestock, hen houses and perhaps other outbuildings. A smithy was often just outside thewall because of the fire risk a forge represented.

Many houses would have been decorated with carvings. These carvings may well have been painted. Gold may also have been used todecorate some of the great halls.

Most houses had only one floor and often only one room. Some of the larger buildings had more than a single room, although not generallymore than three. Some of these larger buildings may have had one end used as an animal shed in the Scandinavian style.

Heating and LightingWindows were very rare and light would generally come from candles or lamps which burnt animal fat and a central fire built on a raisedclay hearth. Hearths were generally oblong or rectangular and often had a frame of wood or stone. The windows may have had vellumstretched over them, as this allows light in but keep draughts out or, rarely, may have been glazed. Windows may also have beenshuttered. The fire was the 'central heating' and 'cooker', although a few houses may also have had a clay bread oven.

Doors and FloorsDoors had iron or wood hinges and were closed with a latch. Some doors would also have a lock. The floors would have been of packedearth or wood. The wooden floors may have been just simple floorboards or may have been made of tessellated wooden tiles. There isalso some evidence that halls may have had raised wooden floors, with steps leading up to the entrance.

There are a few Anglo-Saxon clay floor tiles known from 11th century ecclesiastical centres, but these do not appear to have been usedin houses and halls. The floor was often strewn with straw and/or sweet smelling herbs.

Barton Today

Local Organisations BenefitFrom Barton Today DonationsWe were very pleased this month to be able to give out over three and a half thousand pounds to some

very deserving local organisations. When Barton Today was relaunched almost four years ago, we had

our fingers crossed that we would receive sufficient support from our community to be able to make a

success of it. As a non-profit making magazine, there is a real challenge to meet the monthly expense

that is needed to go to press, not to mention the need to find sufficient content to fill the 48 pages. It is

to the credit of the people of Earls Barton therefore, that not only has Barton Today been published

every month since September 2011, it has also created a small profit which we have been able to put

back into the community.

The photos show the ten different organisations who have benefited from that small surplus. In future

editions we will show you how the money was used to support those organisations.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Trevor Skidmore feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing

is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10yr guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do

the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Earls Barton, Nothampton and Wellingborough areas

is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Trevor a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Barton Today May 2015

THEATRE ARTSHello and welcome to this month’sBarton Today Theatre Arts Page. Thismonth we have a ROYAL focus, no wedon’t have a member of the royal familyjoining us – but we do have some greatentertainment coming to our local RoyalTheatre in Northampton. First we start with my show DRAMA, BABYwhich is showing at The Royal on Sunday 3rdMay. Drama, Baby is part of the National Theatre Connectionsfestival and is performed by The Castle Youth Theatre Company. Please do come and support this local new talent for one final time.

Next we take a visit with Katherine Ryan – 13 May. "WARPEDWIT...STRIKING PRESENCE...KILLER LINES...CALMCONFIDENCE" Scotsman. Fast becoming a recognisable face onBritish TV with appearances on BBC 1's Live At The Apollo & Let'sDance for Comic Relief, BBC 2's Mock The Week, QI & NevermindThe Buzzcocks, C4's 8 Out of 10 Cats and more, Katherine Ryanembarks on her second UK stand-up tour. The fresh, oftendangerously fierce pop-culture obsessed Canadian, was unaffectedby publicized death threats and survived the world's first cracksmoking mayor.

Next is a lady who has been around our TV screens for a very longtime and even longer on the stage it’s the one and only RUBYWAX. Ruby is set to be at The Royal Theatre on 15th May for hernew show “Ruby Wax – Sane New World.” Ruby Wax is a muchloved US born comedian, actor and writer based in the UK.Starting out as an actor at the RSC, she went on to write andperform in her own television shows and script edited the entireseries of Absolutely Fabulous More recently she has also becomea mental health campaigner and gained a Masters degree inMindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy from Oxford University. Thisshow is based on her critically acclaimed book Sane New Worldwhich helps us understand why we sabotage our sanity with ourown thinking. Sane New World shows us how to rewire ourthinking to find calm in a frenetic world and how to become the

master, not the slave, of our own minds. This show is yourpassport to saner living. She might not be sane herself but shedoes a pretty good imitation.

Now onto a show which my mate is performing in Thomas Law.Tom is a diehard Leicester City fan (like myself) but you may knowhim better from his EastEnders days when he played Peter Beal.Anyway the Royal welcomes the his show and cast of BeautifulThing 18th – 23rd May. Nikolai Foster's celebrated anniversaryproduction of Beautiful Thing returns to the stage with a brand newcast led by multi-award-winning actress Charlie Brooks (JanineButcher in EastEnders) and featuring Thomas Law (The World'sEnd; EastEnders); Sam Jackson (Skins; Drifters); Gerard McCarthy(The Fall; Hollyoaks) and introducing Vanessa Babirye (Our Girl).Writer Jonathan Harvey (Coronation Street; Gimme, Gimme,Gimme; Beautiful People) combines comedy with ardent drama inhis critically acclaimed award-winning play that inspired the 1996cult film. Set during a heat wave on a rundown council estate, thestory follows Jamie, a troubled teen whose dislike of football isreason enough for his classmates to bully him at every opportunity.Living with his single mum, Sandra, he finds himself infatuatedwith his next door neighbour and classmate, Ste. Ste, who is livingwith his alcoholic father in the flat next door, is one night beatenso badly that Sandra takes pity and lets him sleep over. In theabsence of a third bed, Ste has to make do with sleeping 'top-to-toe' with Jamie. Much to his delight, Jamie is able to provide Stewith the comfort and reassurance he craves and also a littlemassage with some peppermint foot lotion..

Finally we welcome Danny Bhoy – Please Untick This Box – 28thMay. Danny Bhoy, host of BBC1’s Live At The Apollo, is one of themost globally successful and prolific comics working today. Anatural gift for storytelling combines with razor-sharp wit to makehim one of the most exciting stand ups to have emerged in recentyears. He has built up a massive global following, regularly sellingout tours across Australia, New Zealand and North America.

We I do hope you will be able to make your Royal visit toNorthampton this month – they have some great productionsheading to the stage!

See you again next month GLJ ☺

Redrow AppealDear Barton Today,I am sure there will be numerous letters regarding the decisionby the secretary of state to turn down the appeal by Redrow foroverdevelopment in Earls Barton being sent to you as I type. Cut out and keep by yourcomputer – just in case !!

Barton Soundz set to roundsummer off in style!August Bank Holiday Sunday lookssure to be a hit with an all-dayoutdoor music event taking placeat The Grange, Earls Barton. It’scertainly looking like a definite datefor the diary as local acts take tothe stage to entertain you from1pm onwards featuring a widevariety of musical genres – andhere’s the best bit – it will be FREEto enter!

One of the members of theorganising team is ParishCouncillor, Steve Glover and hetold Barton Today about thethinking behind the event.

“Barton Soundz has already caughtpeople’s imagination and everyoneis working hard to make it a success. Growing up in this villageI’ve always known that there is plenty of talent here and now wewant to show it off. We are trying to do something a bit differentfor families to enjoy on what will hopefully be a scorching BankHoliday Sunday!

At the same time as everyone is enjoying themselves we will besupporting The Grange, a fantastic local facility that we really wantto put on the map. The future of The Grange has very much beenpart of discussions surrounding the development of Earls Barton, and I have been involved with some very productive consultationsaround how we create first class sporting and community facilitiesthat the village can be proud of. I’m really enjoying my role as aCouncillor, particularly getting involved with protecting and shapingthe future of our village. We are also looking to support local talent,be it solo artists, bands or other musicians.”

And Steve is true to his word as he would like anyone who isinterested in performing at the event to get in touch with him andadds “We’re ideally looking for acts to perform a 30 minute set, however, there will be an opportunity for a number of shorter 10minute sets during the day to promote acts that aren’t quite yetready for a full set. The more ‘Barton Soundz’ we can get thebetter!”

Along with the music there will also be food available and of coursethe licensed bar will be open throughout the event.

Barton Soundz will be extensively advertised through local press, fliers, websites and of course social media. Steve and the teamare therefore looking for any local businesses who would like toget involved by sponsoring the event, either as a headline sponsoror by having a presence on the day itself (suggestions for this arewelcome).

“Come the summer, everyone in the village will know about thisevent, and the benefits to our local businesses to be associatedwith it are obvious. I’m happy to discuss any proposals peoplehave, and we will do our best to make it happen” says Steve.“Any proceeds made from this event will be used to grow theevent for next year or donated to charity” he added.

Anyone interested in performing on the day or sponsoring the eventshould write to Steve Glover at [email protected].

It was a short but very busy term before Easter. The mainevent of the term was our Friends of the School fundraiser, the traditional 2p trail. Children had been eagerly bringingin their stash of 2ps over quite a few months in an effortto be the class who collected the most.

The day finally dawned, the weather was sunny and the Friendswere all on hand to observe the laying out of the 2ps on each class trailbefore getting down to the back breaking task of picking them all up againand counting them. The results were in during assembly time and allclasses could feel very proud of their efforts. However, there was oneclear winner and that was Panda class who raised well over £100 andwere duly awarded the piggy bank trophy for the year. The total amountraised was in excess of £650, a fantastic total considering how few of ususe cash these days and so actually get any coins in change. Of coursewe have all started immediately to save 2ps once again ready for the 2016trail!

The children also enjoyed the Easter Egg raffle that was held in school. This event raised a whopping £340!!

We invited our parents into school on several occasions during the term.Four classes, two from Reception and two from Key Stage One sharedtheir learning by doing an assembly for their parents and the rest of theschool. All children performed confidently and proudly to a packed hallwith themes covering learning about shoes, growing beans, toys old andnew and people who help us. We also held an open session for all parentsto come in at the end of a day so that their child could show them their work, both in books and on display in the classroom. Parentscould then look at books in more detail when they came into school for their Spring parents evening appointment the following week.As usual all these events were very well attended.

The summer term now stretches in front of us and already the weather has been glorious with the children getting an early opportunityto play out without coats. Learning themes have changed with our youngest children finding out about ‘Growing and Changing’ and KeyStage One taking the theme ‘Where my Wellies take me’. There are some exciting activities coming up including a gymnasticscompetition, visits out to enhance learning, our June Rose Day and, of course, the village carnival. It looks like I will have lots to writeabout for the next edition!

Deacon's DiaryFr. Damien Walne 1940-2015Since 1991, Fr. Damien Walne had been Parish Priest of Our Ladyof Perpetual Succour Great Billing and St. Anselm’s Earls Barton. He died at Northampton General Hospital on Saturday 7th. Marchhaving been taken ill the week before.

His funeral and Requiem Mass took place at NorthamptonCathedral on Friday 20th. March. The Cathedral was packed tomore than capacity, with some having to stand in the aisles, theporch and spilling out into the grounds outside. A man who hadtouched the hearts of many with the love of Christ, his Master, had gone to his eternal reward.

The following is the homily given by Bishop Peter Doyle.

“The life and death of each one of us has its influence on others.”How true that is of Father Damien as was evident at last evening’sVigil Mass in his beloved Great Billing and is evident today at hisfuneral Mass. Rarely have I experienced such an outpouring ofgrief and sadness, yes, and shock as dear Damien, so full of life, slipped away from us in just over a week.

As we commend our brother to the Lord, let us hold one anotherin prayer, his own brothers and family, the family of his Parish andPastoral Area, and the family of the Diocese which he served foralmost 45 years, the wider community in Great Billing andNorthampton, his friends on the annual pilgrimage to Lourdes and,of course, his brother priests.

I remember the celebration of the 40th. anniversary of Damien’sordination to the priesthood in brilliant sunshine in the grounds ofthe Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. We gave thanksthen and we give thanks now for God’s call of Damien to thepriesthood. It was a call to share in the sacred ministry of Christthe High Priest, to gather God’s people together, to preach theWord, to celebrate the Sacraments, nourishing and building up theBody of Christ, and sending out the community as witnesses tothe love of God. After ordination Damien was an Assistant Priestat St. Augustine’s High Wycombe and then Our Lady’s, Corbybefore becoming Parish Priest at Christ the King, Bedford andsince 1991 at Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Great Billing and St.Anselm’s, Earls Barton

The ministry of a Catholic priest is a ministry of joyful hope, livingout the joy of the Gospel. The Catholic priest is a minister of Christ, the bread of life, the source of eternal life. By the power ofordination, a power of service as Pope Francis reminds us, thepriest consecrates the bread and wine at Mass, food for ourjourney to heaven, the foretaste of the heavenly banquet foretoldin the reading from Isaiah,

“The Lord of Hosts will prepare for all peoples a banquet of richfood……………..

He will remove the mourning veil, he will destroy death……….We exult and we rejoice that he has saved us.”

hat captures and expresses the Eucharistic hope running throughevery Catholic priest’s ministry for the people he serves in thename of Christ. That was Damien’s ministry carried out in thecompany of Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Succour and Our Lady ofLourdes, to whom he was so hugely devoted.

As with all of us, Damien had struggles with his ministry but thatgave him a compassion and an understanding and a great heartflowing from the mercy of God, which he experienced, and theability to touch people sometimes very directly with pastoral care,a care that extended to many of his brother priests as friend, adviser and confessor.

I know that each one of you will have a personal story about hisloving care, and I invite you to place it on the altar as we offer theMass for Damien. He has been a great friend to so many peopleand to so many priests, and a great friend to me from the momentI celebrated my first Confirmation with him the day after myordination and as a constant companion and support on the annualpilgrimage to Lourdes with his prayer, his encouragement and hislaughter – he often told the story of being invited to join thebishops at some celebration in the Vatican until it was realised thatthe chain was not supporting a pectoral cross but carried hisglasses. At which point he was asked to move elsewhere! Wealso had a great mutual interest in sport. I know that he playedsquash and hockey and that he was a great supporter ofNorthamptonshire County Cricket Club and the Saints. It is goodto see some of you sporting Saints’ shirts here today!

We often joked about the number of titles he had – Parish Priest,Rector of the Shrine, Dean of the Pastoral Area, Diocesan Directorof the Lourdes Pilgrimage, Provincial Chaplain to the Knights of St.Columba and many more, I am sure. And he now shares the sameanniversary of death as my mother.

As a Catholic priest of mercy, a priest of hope and a priest of Mary,he has fulfilled his earthly ministry, and we give thanks for the loveof his family, his love of his parish and Diocese, his love of theChurch, his love of Our Lady, and his love of Our Saviour, JesusChrist. As we give thanks, Damien would want us to pray forforgiveness of his sins and in the sure hope of God’s mercy andthe joy of the resurrection commend him to the Lord.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shineupon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

A fine priest and a good, genuinely holy man has gone to hisMaster.

WELLINGBOROUGH 1st XV MAKE LEAGUE PLAY-OFF After an excellent 6-34 win against “Top of the Table” Northampton Old Scouts RFC, Wellingborough,

sitting in second place in the Midlands 2 (South) League, travelled to Biggleswade RFC for a “play-off” decider in the lastleague match of the season.

An intense battle saw Wellingborough come out on top by 17points to 14.

This performance showed the dogged nature of the team and, although chances to show off some flair were few, theteam dug deep and deservedly won the game. With 2nd place secured, comes the extra play-off game against Coalville

RFC on Sat 25th April and a win will see Wellingborough progress to Midlands League 1 for next season.

Barton Today May 2015

nthPupdateHello everyone, Brogan here. I'm a big boy (even bigger than usual), as I don't sleep in my puppycrate anymore. I have been excellent, and settled nicely into my new big bed. Aren't I a cleverboy......

I just love these gorgeous sunny days, but when its windy, and blowing leaves and paper and thingsall over the place, I just cannot resist chasing them. Dad had to shout at me the other day, as a nicebig leaf blew straight by my nose, (I've told you before that I love eating leaves) and I had to lungeafter it, I couldn't help myself..... Oh dear, Dad was loosely holding my lead, and as I pulled to getthe leaf, I went into the road, with Dad hanging on to my lead for dear life. Luckily the car on theroad was far enough away to not hurt us, and I did deserve being told I was a naughty lad. I've triedvery hard not to chase more leaves after that.

I forgot to tell you I was a year old on April 7th...... I wondered why I didn't get many cards! Dadtook me and Skye (that little Springer I live with) to Sywell country park. It's one of my favouriteplaces, and Dad thought we would stay nice and clean as it hadn't rained for a few days. Haha, hewas SO wrong. I found a nice smelly, very muddy bit, and had a good delve in it with my nose.Lot's of people kept laughing at me, and Dad said I was a mucky pup. Mum made me stay outsidewhile Dad cleaned me up. I hope you like my photo....... I thought it smelled wonderful.

Went on the train from Northampton to Rugby a couple of weeks ago with Lucy, our puppy walking supervisor. She thinks I am amazingand very handsome! She wouldn't say that if she could hear me singing in the shops sometimes....... We got to where we were goingon the train, and then walked to another platform, and waited for a train back home. Mum, Dad and Lucy all jumped in surprise when anoisy train screeched through the station very fast, but I just ignored it. Lucy thinks I am very good, and that I walk lovely (she didn'tknow about the leaf blowing episode). She thinks I have stopped growing now, and I'm not too pleased that she has reduced my foodby 20 grams, sounds a lot to me, but she says its not good for us pup's to get overweight. No chance of that with Mum...... she isREALLY mean about giving me too many treats!

There is talk (I'm sure they think I don't listen to them chatting to each other) of me going to a boarder for a few days...... I'm not surewhat that is, I will have to let you know next time. They are also telling people that I will be going into training in August....... I don'tknow what that means either, but Mum and Dad said I will be older than pups usually are going in, something about there being toomany puppies (I keep looking for them, but can't find them anywhere).

Anyway, that's all for now..... speak to you soon,

Nuzzles and licks, Brogan

The annual cricket force weekend was held at the club on the 11th and 12th of April. We are always looking for any new playing or social members as well as volunteers to umpire, score or provide a tea for a game. With twenty two first team games in a season there is plenty of opportunity for everyone to get involved!

We are also looking for sponsorship for the season with our target to raise money for the training of coaches for our thrivingyouth section. Sponsorship of the club starts at £25 for a match day ball sponsor package and we would love to have twenty twosponsors for all of the first team games. Earls Barton Medical Centre - Patient Participation Group (PPG)Earls Barton Medical centre has formed a Patient Participation Group and appointed David Rust as its Chair and AnnHullis as Secretary. There are currently 8 members and 8 virtual members i.e. those people that are unable through workor other commitments to attend meetings but are very much an integral part of the PPG.

The aim of the PPG is to provide co-operation between the Medical Centre and patients to the benefit of both. To thatend following their first meeting the PPG wish to bring the following to the attention of all patients:

• Requesting or cancelling appointments on line• Requesting repeat prescriptions on line• Checking blood tests and results on line• “Buddy buddy” system to help patients access on line facilities• Did Not Attend (DNA) statistics

REQUESTING OR CANCELLING APPOINTMENTS ON LINE Did you know that once registered as an “on line” user you areable to book “routine” appointments on line? It is a very simple process that can be used 24/7. All of us know that attimes the phone lines are very busy and use of this on line service can ease that stress. In addition you can also cancelappointments on line thus releasing precious clinical time for Doctors and Nurses alike.

REPEAT PRESCIPTIONS For those patients wishing to order a repeat prescription you do not need to visit the MedicalCentre or phone them. Simply “log on” to the web site and order your repeat prescription. 48 hours later you pick it upfrom the chemist. Nothing could be easier and it will save you and the Medical Centre staff a lot of time. Once againthis service is open 24/7!

BLOOD AND TEST RESULTS We all know that waiting for blood and other test results can be a worrying time. Well theseimportant results are now available on line so no more phoning the Medical Centre and gaining access to the resultsis available 24/7 so you no longer have to phone from work you can access your results once home at any time.

“BUDDY BUDDY” SYSTEMMembers of the PPG have volunteered to assist any patient who has difficulty gaining accessto a computer or “logging on” to the web site and using the above facilities. In conjunction with the village library wecan arrange to meet up with you and talk you through the process or visit you in your home if you prefer.

DID NOT ATTEND The Medical Centre has asked us to publicise the number of patients who fail to attend. We are sureyou will agree that the numbers of patients who do not attend a pre booked appointment, thus wasting valuableclinical time, is simply not acceptable. Take a look at these shocking facts:

• Total number of appointments NOT ATTENDED in February.......................62• Clinical time “lost”................................................................................... 12 hours

These figures include all doctor and nurse appointments that have been pre-booked. Please, please in future if youare unable to attend cancel the appointment either by phone, on line or visiting the Medical Centre. Let us worktogether and reduce this “waste” of Doctor and Nurse time.

REGISTERING FOR ON LINE ACCESS If you wish to register to gain access to on line services please visit the Medical Centrein person and bring with you a form of photo identity such as your passport or driving licence.

The PPG is there to help you understand the workings of the Medical Centre and put your concerns and views forward. We will be publishing a newsletter quarterly but in the meantime if you would like more information on the PPG pleasecontact:

• David Rust by e-mail [email protected] or mobile 07851 248882 or• Ann Hullis by e-mail on [email protected]

To contact the Medical Centre please check the website at 4mygp.com or the Practice Manager Lorraine Spicer byemail at [email protected]
