Time ToCelebrateWelcome to the June edition of Barton Today. On this month’s front cover we arepleased to be able to share with our readers a photograph of local residentKathleen Buswell. Whilst the Queen is celebrating her 90th year, Kathleen has justpassed the 100 milestone. You can read more about this lovely lady on page 3.

It’s also the time to celebrate the hard work that is put in by local people to raisefunds for those who are in real need. There are three articles this month aboutcharity events. Firstly, NCTLC tell us about the great work they do helping childrenand their families affected by cancer. Secondly, with photos to prove it, we hearabout the inaugural Earls Barton 10k run which raised money for the Alzheimer’sSociety. Lastly, Ups ‘n’ Downs who support children with Down’s syndrome, arelooking forward to their 10th anniversary event, which looks like being a greatnight. I’m sure that each one of the three charities would like to thank the peopleof Earls Barton for being so supportive.

June is the month when the village really begins to buzz. The Festival Fortnightgets under way, lasting from the 4th to 19th June. The programme can be seeninside the magazine. There are events to suit all tastes so go along and support it.It’s fingers crossed for good weather once again, as the annual Carnival getscloser. It’s not too late to enter the parade, book a stall or persuade your mates toform a Tug of War team. Make sure you have the date, Saturday 18th June, inyour diary.

Lastly, it’s time to make up your minds. Are you out or are you in? June 23rd is thedate. Don’t forget to cast your vote. If you need some advice on this matter, DearEric returns this month with his usual words of wisdom.

Barton Today June 2016

The lovely lady on the front of this month’s BartonToday is Kathleen Buswell, who is a resident at the Grangefield CareHome. Kathleen was born on 3rd May 1916 and was almost ten years old before QueenElizabeth was born on 21st April in 1926. She describes the Queen as a mere youngster. Kathleen celebratedher 100th birthday last month and was the proud recipient of a congratulation card from the Queen. Kathleen was bornin Northampton.

Her parents were Nellie and Samuel Fitzhugh. They lived in Ecton and Samuel was a stone mason. Kathleen was oneof four daughters. Doris and Phyllis were older sisters and Rita younger. Kathleen recalls fondly her childhood days, playing during the summer holidays with her friends. They used to wheel a dolls’ pram down the hill in Ecton, untroubled by cars, and there was always a bottle of water in the pram.

She went on to work at Barkers in Earls Barton and then married her husband Charles who worked in Northampton. They had three children, Trevor, Stephen and Rita. Kathleen still retains a great sense of humour.

She recalled her head teacher at Ecton, known as Simko, who gave her the cane for replying ‘shan’t’ when asked todo something. She also said that her sister Phyllis once got told off because she used to turn up her dress as soon asshe left home.

If you want to know the secret to a long life she said that hard work and eating fresh locally grown produce are veryimportant. So, as we raise a glass to honour our Queen’s 90th birthday, let’s not forget our very own resident Kathleenwho celebrates an even more memorable milestone.

Happy Birthday Kathleen.

Ups ‘n’ Downs are celebrating turning 10 years old!Tom Rees writes... It seems hardly possible that our charity is turning 10 this year; not least because this means that our son, Freddie,is now into double figures and we have the prospect of him leaving primary school to deal with. But all the reality of getting old and themandatory disbelief at where the time goes is made easier when we reflect on what great things Ups ‘n’ Downs have managed toachieve over this last decade.

From very small beginnings (4 families meeting together to try and work out how having a child with Down’s syndrome would affecttheir lives), the group has now grown so that 40 families meet regularly and access various different support and development activities, all funded by Ups ‘n’ Downs. From small initial fundraiser events such as raffles and cake sales, the charity now raises over £40,000each year and employs a number of specialist services including Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Swimming alongsidecommissioning expert support and training for schools.

To celebrate this special occasion, we are holding a 10th anniversary dinner on June 18th at Wicksteed Park which we have some excitingnews to announce.

Long time friend of Ups n Downs and top UK chef, Rob Kennedy has made the incredibly generous offer of being Head Chef for theevening. Rob is Executive Chef at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and is more used to cooking for audiences such as the RoyalFamily, international dignitaries and world leaders than a local charity at Wicksteed Park but we are delighted that he will be in charge offood for the evening.

Furthermore, Rob has taken it upon himself to recruit several other of the UK's finest chefs including a head chef of a Michelin starrestaurant who will be cooking different courses on the evening - a real treat for all those friends and supporters of the charity who havesupported us over these last 10 years.

To top it off, once the food is over, there will there be live musicand dancing till late with the 'Rutland Big Band’ and disco. Sodrinks on arrival, a 3 course meal cooked by a combination of theUK's best chefs including wine on the table followed by live musicand dancing till late for £50 a head.

The residents of Earls Barton have been hugely supportive of ourcause over the years and we’re really grateful to all your supportin the many different forms it takes place. We're very excitedabout this celebratory occasion hope that you may be able tojoin us.

If you’d like to come along and be a part of the evening, pleasecontact me on 07595 711446 or email Karen Smith atsecretary@upsndowns

Zaytoun olive oil wins more awards! This time it’s top of the list in the Ethical consumer magazinebest buys and wins a soilassociation award too with moreawards on their way.

One of the olive oil producers,Mohammed Hamada is a father of7, born and brought up in thebeautiful ancient village of Burqin.Burqin is home to 6000 people. 2of us were lucky enough to meetMohammed when he visited theUK earlier this year along with thePalestinian director of Zaytoun.

Mohammed Hamada is a full time farmer, working landinherited from his ancestors which is planted with olive trees. One of the first farmers to register with the Palestine Fair TradeAssociation when it was established in 2004, he sells an averageof 3 tonnes of organic Fairtrade olive oil each year. An enthusiastabout the benefits of Fairtrade, Mohammed says the premiumshave supported his community in many ways - supplying toolsand equipment for the farmers in his co-operative, and investingin a newly built school in the village, providing for a new pavedplayground and new desks.

Sales of his olive oil to Fairtrade customers have benefitted hisfamily budget too as Mohammed receives payment soon afterinvoice. It also helps him to invest any surplus in expanding hiscrops, and caring better for his trees. Having started off with500 trees, he now has 1,200.

Farming in occupied Palestine is never straightforward, however. In 2004, Mohammed was barred from his land by theIsraeli army, when a new illegal settlement was threatened closeto his trees. Thankfully, the settlers and soldiers withdrew fromthe area and he was able to go back to take care of his trees.Like so many other farmers, though, Mohammed struggles witha lack of availability of water. Although underground water isabundant in the area, residents of Burqin must obtain a permitfrom Israel before any well is dug, with a limitation on theamount of water that can be pumped. Many farmers must buywater by the truckload, and this is too expensive to sustain manycrops.

Luckily, Palestine’s olive trees are perfectly adapted to an aridclimate, and thrive on rainfall alone. Zaytoun is a UK socialenterprise importing and selling fairly traded Palestinianartisan food. The products are both a celebration of theexceptional quality produced in Palestine, and a means ofsustainable livelihood for the growers. We sell many otherZaytoun products including the deliciously sticky medjouldates…in next month’s B2Day we will give you a recipe forsome delicious medjoul date ice cream! Happy gardening!

Jonathan writes...I am a great believer in the need of all people for help alonglife’s pathway. I believe that no man is an island, and that inorder to face the battles of life, we are in need of a little TLC =Tender, Loving, Care.

Let us take a look at life, and think on these things. As childrenwe are in deepest need of those who will love and care for us,be there to share our moments of happiness, as well as beingable to lift us when we have fallen – both physically andspiritually. Children are learning constantly from parents of howto cope with life, and their values are shaped by others whowill pass on their own upbringing. What a tremendousresponsibility we all share in seeking to guide our children, forthe world of tomorrow is founded on that which we sharetoday. I am a great believer in the Bible’s basic teaching, thatthe way we teach our children in their infancy and youth, willcontinue with them throughout the rest of their lives. May weall show TLC towards our children.

After childhood we come to those years that lead us throughto retirement. This is a whole new world, built on hopes anddreams, where success and failure are often looked upon ashow big a house we own, how much money is in our bankaccount, and in all the other material wealth we possess. Whata deceptive world this is, for we see so often, much wantingmore, broken lives through the constant search for those thingsthat can never truly bring us peace of mind or contentment.Happiness does not come from what we possess, but fromhow much we give – in terms of reaching out to others withlove and care.

The people who contribute most to society are those whounderstand, that the world will become a better place, onlywhen we learn to share more with those so much lessfortunate than ourselves.

Our Lord Jesus Christ taught us that the greatest values wereto be found in loving, serving and giving, not in grabbing andgetting.

We realise through these important years our need of others –family, friends, workmates, social pals, those we meet throughsporting activities, those we meet within the Church and in thewider world. Society would be a poorer place indeed if we allchose to live in isolation. May TLC abound in bucket-loadsduring these vital years. Like good manure, it needs spreading– HA HA!

Finally, we come to those twilight years, often referred to asbeing in GWR or God’s Waiting Room. Those of this age-group,and we are living longer according to statistics, are deservingof all the TLC we can give. There has always been a dangerthat our elderly people may be looked upon as having little tooffer anymore, needing to understand that they have had theirday.

Let me, however, seek to set the record straight. These arethe people who have so much wisdom to pass on, so much oflife’s experiences to share, and so much love to give. Theymay not be as strong in mind and body as they once were, buttheir contribution to society is so often invaluable, as theylovingly care for children and grandchildren, and are so oftenthe pillars of our society.

As I look back, I thank God for my grandmother and greatgrandmother (my grandfather passed away when I was veryyoung so I never really knew him), who taught me so many ofthe values I cherish today. Their gifts of nurturing, loving andcaring for our family can never be measured, they werepriceless in teaching us those things to treasure in life. Thosethings included the love of our Lord Jesus Christ, care andrespect for all people and animals, consideration for the worldenvironment, and the seeking to build a better world throughour everyday living.

Somehow, I think that many of the lessons taught by thosewho loved and cared for us in years past, need to return.Words like PLEASE, THANK-YOU, and SORRY seem to havedisappeared in many quarters, and common courtesies are sooften, it seems, things of the past. How sad that is, and a sadreflection on the failure to teach good manners.

Well, whatever our age, we are all in need of tender, loving, care, and the world would, without doubt, be a much betterplace if we all sought to share it.

God Bless and be with you all, Jonathan.

PS Did you thing I’d forget to mention the “Cobblers”? Ofcourse not!

Time for a little bit of Shakespeare and a brand new production made in Northamptonshire!

The Tempest: 23rd Jun – 2nd Jul at the Royal Theatre. Our fourth tribute to William Shakespeare is his last masterpiece The Tempest,in a vibrant new version by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Oscar and BAFTA winning Ida; Her Naked Skin, National Theatre).

Set on a remote island of villains, lovers, fools and outcasts, The Tempest is a tale of enlightenment and forgiveness. Conjuring up asupernatural world of sorcery, savagery, shipwrecks and chivalry, Shakespeare’s late play is the bard at his most mystical and audacious.Shakespeare’s magical story of growing up and growing old will be performed by the next generation of talent – an ensemble of 18-25year olds that brings together the most promising young actors from the UK and Northamptonshire. The production is a uniquecollaboration with the National Youth Theatre, whose renowned alumni rank amongst Britain’s greatest actors including Northampton’sMatt Smith, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Helen Mirren and Daniel Day Lewis.

Settling intothe villageDavid Deegan writes...I have been here over a month now, and Ihave finally managed to find everything in the house. I have arather idiosyncratic attitude to packing. When preparing to movehouse the majority of boxes were labelled “Kitchen” but I knewthat when my mother unpacked them she would find things likecds, talcum powder, weed-killer and shoes. If she was lucky theshoes would be a matching pair. When I pack things I start offwith a general sense of organisation, but where I see there is agap I feel compelled to fill it.

Now the reason I mention my mother is that she loves to help. She came to stay for several days when I moved fromManchester to Bedford, to help me unpack and sort things out.And when she found out I was moving again she asked “So will Ibe coming to say with you for a week to help you get settled?”Those of you who are conversant in the language of “Mother”will know that this is in no way an actual question.

The inevitable effect of moving, especially when you pack thingsin such an idiosyncratic way as I do, is that things go missing. Ifound the telephone. But it took me days to find the cable thatconnected it to the wall. I found a razor but with no head. Justbefore I was entered for the Grizzly Adams looky-likeycompetition I found the blades. Mum commandeered thekitchen on arrival and put everything away logically. However itwas her logic not mine, and so it took me a few days tocomprehend it. I hadn’t quite resorted to eating off paper platesbut I was getting close. She should set the puzzles on “TheCrystal Maze”.

However, there was one aspect of her logic I understood. I do alot of Chinese, Thai, Japanese and Indian cookery from scratchso I have plenty of unusual ingredients. When she unpacked, shecreated a drawer full of any ingredient that didn’t look English toher. If she didn’t recognise it as something you got in a BrewersFayre she shoved it in there with the rest of them. When one ofmy Japanese friends saw this central collection of exoticfoodstuff he immediately dubbed it “The Asian Drawer”. But asit is phenomenally useful to have things like this together, boththe physical arrangement and the name have stuck. Don’t knowwhy I never thought of it. She is inspired.

The house itself is ideal for me.There is a medium-sized garden, with a small lawn and a largedecking area, i.e. perfect forthose who want to spend moretime drinking G&T than mowing. The house has a mobile room-thermostat which you just carry from room to room and then, according to the temperature you program into it, it warms upthe room you are in. I have a reputation for keeping a cold house.I admit it – I am from the North so I don’t feel the cold. But evenmy fellow Northerners complain about my reluctance to turn upthe heat. So I can imagine that if the secret about this room-thermostat were ever to get out, my visitors will be fighting forpossession of it.

Damn – I think I just gave that one away.

It also has an alarm that talks to me which is particularly suitedfor someone who is living alone and could do with having afriendly voice around. When I leave the house I press the fob anda well-spoken lady tells me that the alarm is setting so I ought to“leave now”. On returning, I press it again and she informs thatit has been switched off and I “may enter”. She is endearinglypolite but after only a week of hearing this I wanted to change it.I do get bored easily. I quite like the idea of a more Northernaccent saying “Stop dawdling! Get yer coat on and go – anddon’t even think about coming back bladdered!” and when Ireturn it would greet me with “Oh look what the cat draggedin!” or “And just what time do you call this?”

Maybe there is a market for talking alarms that you canprogramme with positive affirmations? When you arrive home itwould say “How good to see you again” or “Welcome back -you make the place light up just by being yourself!”, and whenyou leave it would say “Go get ‘em tiger! You can do it!” or“Don’t worry, there will be someplace where that outfit is still infashion” or “No! Of course your bum doesn’t look big in that”.

My drive to work is around 30 minutes. I can do it slightly quickerby going down all the winding, single-track country roads. Thekind of white-knuckle journey where you end up with freshpheasants and rabbits glued to your radiator grill. This would cutdown on my food bill, which as a value-for-money-Northerner isvery tempting. However, after doing this drive once, even on abright sunny morning with clear visibility, the sheer terror led meto vow to never attempt it again. The drive I now do uses Aroads, but it still takes me through a series of small villages thatlead one to overuse the words “quaint” and “picturesque”,interspersed with green fields that lead one to overuse the word“rolling”. Having lived in Manchester for so long, I realise howlucky I am to live in an area where I am in the heart of thecountryside, and for the first time in my working life, the journeyto the office is a joy to do.

I met the people from whom I bought the house. They havemoved to a larger property on the other side of the village, and Itook round a parcel that had been delivered to me by mistake.Good old Royal Mail redirection service! They were totallydelightful; invited me in for a drink, showed me around their newplace, answered all my questions about the house e.g. “How doI change the time on the cooker now it’s British Summer Time?”

"Yours Truly"

They had kindly left me all the booklets for all the appliances and Icould have read them but I am not one for following instructionbooks. To me, IKEA furniture instructions are simply“guidelines”.

They gave me lots of great advice. One of theirrecommendations was “Beckworths Emporium”. They told methat even though this garden centre/delicatessen/café was milesfrom anywhere it was hugely popular and renowned for its creamteas. They told me that if I took my mother there I woulddefinitely earn brownie points. Now that is the kind of localadvice you really need! And anywhere that describes itself as an“emporium” has to be worth checking out. Whoever does theirmarketing is a genius, because although it is a few miles outsidethe village, it is clearly worth the drive for many people, judgingby the massive queue for the café. Saturday afternoon is clearlyNOT the time to go. I took the number of people prepared to waita long time for a latte and a scone as sufficient proof that I shouldreturn another day with mum in tow.

Beckworth’s had an impressive selection of plants, some unusualhousehold gifts and garden ornaments, and a delicatessen thatspecialised in food that was down the lobster/quail end of thespectrum. Lidl and Aldi it was most definitely not. It might be agood place to take my mother for a cream tea in the café, but Iwon’t let her loose in the deli unless I have brought my cheque-book. However, just like Jeyes it triggered the “My Christmasshopping is sorted” reaction in me.

I am impressed that the area hasso many country parks to visit;some of which charge you forcar-parking and some don’t.There are signs in the car parkssaying that “Trap Cars operate inthe area” which I initiallyassumed meant that plain-clothes-cars would be checkingto see if people had “paid anddisplayed”, but these signs areeven posted in the car parks thatdon’t charge you. So it is a bit ofmystery to me as to what thatactivity they might be trying to‘trap’. Bad fashion sense? If so, Iwill be behind bars within amatter of weeks.

I spent a peaceful couple ofhours wandering around the lakein Harrold-Odell park, presumably so named because itlies between the two villages ofHarrold and Odell. I imaginedthat perhaps the villages werenamed after a couple (Harrold

and Odell) who were desperately in love but kept apart by theirfamilies. Presumably following the separation the villagersretained joint custody of the ducks and swans.

When a friend came over to visit we took a walk around SummerLeys nature reserve which is only 10 minutes drive from myhouse. There are several hides at the side of the Summer Leyslake so that you can get a closer look at the wildfowl. The usualetiquette with hides is for you to remain totally quiet inside, butas we entered one of them, where a family were quietlyobserving the swans and coots, we could hear voices extollingthe virtues of a healthy lifestyle. My immediate thought was thatthis was a council initiative; piping in health advice to encouragepeople to get out and take more exercise. It felt to me that thiswas preaching to the converted given that were already in theGreat Outdoors, but a nice touch I suppose.

And then the health advice gave way to a traffic report and thensome loud gangsta-rappin’ music. The family in the hide werelooking less than pleased. And we suddenly realised that itwasn’t piped-in audio from the council. At the very instant wehad opened the door, my friend’s mobile, which was in histrousers, had decided to switch itself on and tune into a localradio station. Now what this man keeps in his pants that has thedextrous capability to operate a mobile phone I have absolutelyno idea, and I have decided never to ask. Thankfully he managedto switch it off before a Trap Car arrived, so I remain free fromcustody, and free to write another day.

Christopher Heaton-Harris... If we vote to remain in the EU it isinevitable that our contribution to theEU budget will go up and up and up…An American President once said: “Control the money and youcontrol the nations” and his advice has become the guiding maximof the European Union’s institutions. Over its history the EU’sexpanding powers have coincided with expanding budgets muchof which is spent aggrandising its institutions and on propagandapromoting them. The EU spent €162bn in 2015, the largestexpenditure items being the Common Agricultural Policyconsuming 46% of the budget and regional funding consuminganother 33%. Our contribution is calculated by size of our GDPand notional customs and VAT receipts. Invariably, we are thesecond largest net contributor to the EU budget, currently payinga gross sum of £350m a week into the EU budget. I served as aMember of the European Parliament for 10 years before beingelected to the House of Commons and for much of that time I wason its Budget and Budgetary Control Committees. I saw for myselfthe unaccountable nature of EU’s spending, how the budgetswere not signed off (they haven’t been for 20 years now) and thereoccurring reports pointing out the billions of Euros were subjectto “material error”. It was this experience that led me to try andget some budgetary reform into the PM’s EU reform deal.Unfortunately, our EU partners proved yet again that they werenot interested in any reform, especially when it comes to the EUbudget. It was yet another wasted opportunity for a system inneed of reform.

Currently regional funding in poor EU areas is riddled with wasteand rather than help States like Greece escape poor productivity,EU spending has led to increased dependency and poor resourceallocation, often accentuated by EU rules that force poor states tomatch fund EU directed projects. Often EU spending is ludicrous, like the €411,000 for a Hungarian dog fitness and rehabilitationcentre that was never built, the €100,000 spent on a creating aski resort on a flat Danish island with no snow, or the millions infarm subsidies spent on golf courses. Some spending, however,is more sinister. The EU spends over £500m a year on its ownpropaganda, billions to buy up fishing rights in Africa that are thenplundered by Spanish fishermen at the expense of the locals andto development aid not targeted on the poorest states but on itsown enlargement.

We also receive extra bills when oureconomy out-performs the EU economy. When confronted with an unexpected £1.7bnbill a couple of years ago, the Prime Ministerrightly argued that “We are (a) leadingmember of this association [the EU], and youdo not join an organisation that hits you witha bill in this way.” Yet we are members andso we had no choice but to pay - and thingswill only get worse if we vote to remain. Ifwe remain in the EU it is inevitable our contribution to the EUbudget will continually rise. The reason is simple: our “rebate” isdecreasing. Thanks to the spectacularly bad deal struck by TonyBlair in 2005, we will no longer receive a rebate on money spentin Eastern Europe – so as funding is ramped up to the newermembers of the club, so will our contribution will rise and rise –and there is nothing we can do about it. Due to our smalleragricultural sector, the way we import more goods from outsidethe EU subject to customs duties, and because we have fewerpoorer regions eligible to receive EU regional funding - we will alsocontinue to receive less and less in return. Even when we receiveEU monies they always have to achieve EU policy aims rather thanUK ones and so spending is badly targeted and comes withpolitical strings attached. Unfortunately the EU money tree isgrowing in thin soil. Years of over-commitment and waste has ledto a build-up of debt in the system of over €30bn. It is far fromclear how the EU will meet these obligations without raiding thebudgets of net contributors again and again and again - and yes, that means we will end up paying even more.

So, this failing system means we will need much deeper pocketsif we remain in the EU. If we leave we can keep our money forour own priorities. It is a simple fact, that not having to pay the EUour membership fee would be the biggest anti-austerity measuretaken by the UK government, ever!

And future spending priorities would be determined by a Britishgovernment acting in our own national interest. Indeed, there are350m reasons each week why we should vote to leave. If youagree with me and want to help regain control of our country, please contact me.Yours, Chris.

March 2011 55.

Ah don’t they look sweet ….. like butter wouldn’t melt !!! The Under 12’s squad consists of: Dan Talbot, Dan Webb, Lewis Carvell, Harry McNeill, James Perry, Charlie Lawrence, Luke Booker, Nikhil Khatri, Alex Woodruff, Sam Fidelia, Jake Channer, William Dodwell - and missing from the photo Jonathan Ashworth, Jake Lay and Jack Smart. The team is managed by Darren Booker and Assisted by Dave Dodwell.

Not one of the biggest squads at Earls Barton Football Club but the boys all get on very well on and off the pitch(and although go to no less than 8 different schools, they still manage to communicate during the week, evenif it is on the xbox or playstation)…………..

At the start of the season it was decided that it would be good for the boys to embark on anew challenge, so the decision was taken to move from the Kettering Weetabix League over to the Northants John Henry League. With 3 divisions, the team were entered into the U12C league. Unfortunately, although coming across some really friendly opposition, the majority of games have been won with ease for most of the season, hence they are proud to be sitting at the top of their league - having scored 80 goals and letting in just 8 in their fi rst 10 games so far. The team have done extremely well and are due to play Nether Heyford in the quarter fi nals of the League Cup and by the time you read this article they will either be sad or on their way to the semi fi nals……….

Training for the U12’s is on a Wednesday night at the Pioneer Sportsground6.30pm - 8.00pm. If you are player that can add something to our team, please dont hesitate to join us at one of our training sessions.

Tesco for Schools & Clubs Voucher Scheme is back for 2011 !!!

Vouchers will be available in store and with online grocery orders from Monday 28th February until Sunday 8th May, so get collecting! Last year went well but let’s make it a record collection this year!! The more vouchers we collect, the more equipment we can get for the club.

If you collect the vouchers and would like to donate them to EBUFC, please contact anyone on the General Committee - where they will be gratefully received! If you would like a collection box and poster to put in your workplace, please email us at [email protected]

Wales Tour With seasons drawing to theirconclusion, it was time for the Wales tour– so it was that players, coaches andfamilies of the Under 9’s, 11’s 13’s and 14’sall headed off to picturesque Pwllheli inNorth Wales, at the cusp of Snowdonia forthe ESF Festival of Football.

With bags packed, boots polished andsat nav’s programmed all arrived safelyby Friday evening to Haven and thewelcoming sight of luxury static homes,an indoor fun pool and an open bar. Withall the meet a greets comfortably done –and the decision that the planned two-day festival of football would actually beone, very busy day due to the weatherforecast – everyone settled in with anearly(ish) night for players to dream of theglory set to come!

With the first kick offs planned in themorning it was an early start for the Under13’s – always up for a challenge theyannounced their arrival in style winningtheir first game 2-0. It was clear from theoff, and for all age groups, that this wouldbe a testing tournament, some extremelywell funded, large clubs mixed with acombination of teams affiliated toprofessional clubs from England, Walesand Ireland meant that every gamewould be tough and extremelycompetitive. The facilities also ensured allgames were played out in front of thedramatic background of MountSnowdon – stunning! And with the addedthrill of some top level clubs – such asLiverpool – scouts floating around also.

The tournament, having started with theU13’s at 10am finally finished with theU11’s last game at 7.30pm. However, overthe duration of the day there was muchdrama, some “creative” refereeing, stunning goals, fantastic results andabove all a whole boot bag of fun.

The under 9’s including 2 under 8’s,gained a whole heap of invaluableexperience and, whilst testing, will be allthe better having faced someoutstanding teams and largely holdingtheir own.

The U11’s were narrowly beaten by sometremendous teams and claimed victoriesof their own to finish a very respectful 5thin their age group.

The U13’s tournament had it all, dramaticreferee decisions, penalties, a stunningdiving headed goal up for goal of theday and a 5th place finish.

The U14’s faced very tough opposition, and finished 6th overall – they were thefourth highest scoring team for their agegroup also and played in the right spirit asdid all of the teams.

It was a great day and all, exhausted butgrinning from ear to ear, headed back tobase for some much neededrefreshments and some eveningentertainment.

The now clear Sunday ensured that useof the park facilities – which includedcrazy golf, go karts and huge arcades -was made and, although the weatherlived up to its promise of wind and rain, agreat day of activity was had.

On to Sunday evening and thetournament presentations made by aLiverpool and England legend, winner of3 European Cups, every other majordomestic and European competitions –now a Sky Sports pundit, Phil Thompson.

Every Earls Barton player was awarded aspecial trophy and had a cracking teamphoto taken with their team andcoaches, cheered on by several hundredpacked into the theatre. The Green Armyreached fever pitch when it wasannounced that the U14’s had won thefair play award!

Off into the night went the throng, accompanied by laughter, trophies andsome cracking memories of friends, football and fun.

We played, supported, and enjoyed asone club, Earls Barton United – The GreenArmy!

Thanks to all who organised – especiallyAntony and Kirk – all of the coaches, thefamilies and friends who supported andabove all the players for making it a greatWales tour and one that will likely berepeated in the coming years.

On a lovely sunny morning at 06.30hrs on Friday 6 May we set offfrom The Square to pick up a few tour members from Northamptonmaking a total of 23 bowlers, a driver and a “guest” who had joinedthe tour as a last minute replacement for Alan who could not makeit. The mood was jovial and just outside Oxford our Tour Captain,Richard “Tricky” Paintin made his welcome announcements andissued us with a “Passport” and Tour Card. Neil Gould thenpresented “Trick” with a “Captain’s Naval Hat” to wear on the tour.Shouts of “Captain Birdseye” and “Ahoy there” resounded throughthe coach! Following a coffee stop on route we arrived atPortsmouth at 10.30 for an 11.00 sailing. Once aboard the bar wasopen and the Tour began!

After a short crossing to The Isle of Wight (soon to be renamed TheIsle of Wright!) we travelled directly to our first match to RydeBowls Club where we were given a warm welcome. Ryde laid on asalad lunch which was an excellent start to the afternoon and wewere on the green promptly at 2.00pm to start the first match of thetour. As only 20 of us were to bowl, George Blackwell, MichaelGriffin and Ray Wake were amongst the spectators as well as ourmystery guest Fred ( on a free transfer from the Band Club). Thematch must have been exciting as George was soon in the land ofnod (see photo)!! The match was played in good spirits on a warm, sunny afternoon and we managed to win by 89-81 – a great start tothe tour. Rink scores were:

• Tim Barnard, B Harrison, D Knight and R Paintin - WON 19-14• R Ceely, F Hopes, D Essam and N Gould - WON 17-13• T Wheeler, D Wheeler, A Ellis and G Dartnell - TIED 16-16• D Rust, J Corbin, P Wright and D Wright - LOST 20-23• S Jepson, A Orton, D Lockett and T Denny - WON 17-15

So the “Highest winning rink” went to “Tricky” and his team!!

We stayed for a couple of drinks (mainly tea and coffee) and thenthanked our hosts for the day and made our way to our coach andthe short journey to the Trouville hotel in Sandown, our base for theTour. Booked in, showered and changed we sat down for theevening meal at 6.30 being ushered to our tables by a head waiterwho had recently won the “Rudest Waiter of The Year” competitionon the Island. After the meal we sat and discussed tactics for thefollowing day and recalled all our best shots (and those not so good)that afternoon. Some members wandered out for a stroll along thesea front taking in the sea air and calmness of the evening – somedid other things!

Day 2, Saturday and breakfast (“you will sit at the same table eachmeal!” ordered our friendly head waiter). Afterwards we had a

wander around Sandown and I bought my wife a present setting anexample to ALL other Tour members – wives and girlfriends pleasenote – there were loads of shops! On the bus at 12.30 with a TourNewsletter to read (no copies are allowed to be brought back) andon our way to HM Prison Parkhurst where we were to play CampHill Bowls Club – this used to be the Prison Officers Club! Shouts of“do not leave anything of value on the bus” and “you’re playingagainst Cell Block 2!” were appropriate to our surroundings! Wewere given a very warm welcome by their Club President, a ladywho took a shine to George (charmer Blackwell) and blessed withlovely weather once again we commenced at 2.00pm. Today“Denny’s Tours were operating so the members, Arnold Orton,Dave Lockett and Trevor Denny – the founder) had already departedat 09.30 – more details later. Our “mystery” guest, Fred did his owntour – A Guinness mystery Tour!)

The match was played in great spirits and George was delighted thatthe Club President was playing alongside him. At the end of thematch we were victors again winning by 112-90 – so two out of two– great stuff! The rink scores were:

• S. Jepson, B Harrison, D Essam and D Wright - TIED 20-20• G Blackwell, J Corbin, D Rust and Neil Gould - WON 31-7

• R Wake, T Barnard, D Knight and G Dartnell - WON 24-16• R Ceely, M Griffin, F Hopes, P Wright - LOST 18-28• T Wheeler, D Wheeler, A Ellis and R Paintin - TIED 19-19

So the winning rink was Neil Gould and his team. It has to bereported here that George had a tremendous match so in future weneed him to play opposite an attractive lady for it obviously helps!

Following formalities we bade our hosts farewell and thanked themfor a wonderful afternoon. Back at the hotel we were slightly late sostraight into dinner and then a relaxing evening for some and a moreeventful one for others – the mind boggles!

Sunday and we woke to a lovely sunny morning. Another TourNewsletter for members to read on our way to Shanklin. Nowwhereas Sandown is a little run down Shanklin is beautiful, full oflovely gift shops (wonderful gifts for wives and lady friends!), quainttea shops and pub restaurants. Some members tasted the localdelicacy, crab sandwiches, whilst others went for tea and cakes. Itreally is a lovely place and highly recommended for a visit. Back onthe bus for 1.00pm and off to a Warner’s Complex the other side ofSandown. Down winding lanes (Kevin the driver was excellentalthough he did have to ask a local lady the way!) the Warner’scomplex is set on the seafront and a brisk sea breeze greeted us aswe debussed. A longish walk to the Bowling Club and then we sawthat the green had been fertilised that morning so small pellets offertiliser were covering the green we were to bowl on! Waterbuckets were provided each end so that we could wash our bowlsand hands after every end (all 21 of them!). Although this couldhave dampened spirits it did not and the Warner members weremore than apologetic. Sitting out today was Michael (not well) andDarren and his son Tom who decided they would have a look at theWarner complex and surrounding area.

The match started promptly at 2.00pm and with a strong sea breezeblowing across the green we were grateful to Alex (our overseasplayer) to tell us how much we would have to allow for the windspeed; he really knows his stuff and talks a great game! At the halfway stage all rinks were fairly level apart from the one I was on andwe were 17-1 down (this went to 21-1 down just after tea!) Afterthe tea break most rinks played a lot better and we managed to winagain by 111-86. Now we believe this is the first time that we havewon all 3 matches on tour – I am sure somebody (probably from theSilver Band Club) will either confirm this or let us know when theydid it!!. The rink scores were:

• D Lockett, A Orton, F Hopes and R Paintin - WON 21-19• G Blackwell, R Ceely, D Essam and G Dartnell - WON 24-17• R Wake, B Harrison, D Knight and D Wright - WON 18-13• S Jepson, T Barnard, D Rust and T Denny - LOST 11-25• A Ellis, J Corbin, P Wright and N Gould - WON 36-12

So for the second day in a row Neil’s team won the highest winningrink prize (it was very nearly 3 in a row) – only one shot stopped himhaving all the wine!!

We did not stay long after the match but long enough to win ALLthe raffle prizes (they should not have fertilised the green thatmorning!!). The atmosphere on the coach was excellent and it wasnot surprising that a lot of the members went straight to the bar inthe hotel and skipped dinner much to the annoyance of our “friendlyhead waiter!” – still no harm done.

Monday morning and we are leaving at 9.00am so a final breakfastand pack before boarding the coach to catch the 11.00am ferry. Notso much talk today and much sleeping before we arrived at Weston- on –the –Green for lunch. We took the opportunity to have an endof tour discussion where it was agreed that it had been a great tour

and thanks were given to “Captain Birdseye” alias “Tricky” for onceagain coming up with the goods. Our President, David Knightpresented Alex Ellis and John Corbin with “spot prizes” and I gaveout the usual end of tour awards:

• CHARACTER OF THE TOUR - BARRY HARRISSON

• BOWLER OF THE TOUR - GEORGE BLACKWELL

• TOUR CAPTAIN AND ORGANISER - RICHARD “TRICKY” PAINTIN

Finally Steve Jepson was presented with a bottle of “ScottishWater” for all his efforts in designing and printing our Passports andTour Cards.

News & Views from the Baptist ChurchBrian Emerson writes...One of the things Lesley and I have always wanted to do sincewe retired from teaching was to go on safari in Africa. In April wedid. This had been planned for nearly eighteen months and westarted at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, spent most of the ten daysin Botswana travelling between different lodges and going ongame drives in the late afternoon/early evening and early morningand ended in Namibia.

Being a waterfall “junkie”, going to Victoria Falls, which was infull flood, was amazing. On our game drives we saw lions andleopards, elephants and egrets, ostriches and oryx, hyenas andhippopotamuses - to name just a few of the wide variety ofanimals that we encountered. In Namibia we went to one of thelocal villages to see their way of life and especially to learn notonly how the lodges give employment to the villagers but howthey support the villages in other ways such as providing thefunds for education, for the sinking of bore holes for water, forthe purchase of solar panels so that they all have electricity andso on.

Our visit to the local village took place on a Sunday. The boat was“beached” so that we could disembark and we were greeted byJoseph, one of the elders, who welcomed us in the name of theFather, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Just so natural and I thoughtthat, while in the UK you might be greeted to a church in thatway, you certainly wouldn’t be greeted to a village or town likethat!

During our “tour” of the village we were sung to twice; once atthe church and once by the ladies of the village in the communalyard. There were seven people at the church service – most ofthe ladies were getting ready for the welcome singing in thecommunal yard and the men had gone either to play in or supporttheir football team in a match against the next village – twentymiles away. Just like the UK!

We were shown how they dried the fish that they caught in thedelta and were told how they went across the “border” to sell itin Botswana. We noticed that a couple of the “huts” where theylive now had satellite dishes as they had electricity. Joseph wasa Manchester United supporter but he hadn’t really yet heard ofLeicester when we tried to explain which part of England wecame from!

I came away from our safari (a Swahili word which means journeyand originally comes from Arabic) marvelling at God’s creation inthe animals we saw and the “natural” wonders of differentlandscapes. I thanked him for the way that when people andgovernments work together at local and national levels the livesof “ordinary” people can be improved. I thought about thecommunity spirit that exists between the churches in EarlsBarton and the words of this hymn came to mind:-

“The journey of life may be easy, may be hard, there’ll be dangeron the way; with Christ at my side I’ll do battle as I ride, ‘gainstthe foe that would lead me astray; Will you ride, ride, ride withthe King of Kings? Will you follow my leader true? Will you shoutHosanna To the lowly Son of God, who died for me and you?”

Overseas Player/ Handy ManBrandon has already made an exciting contribution to the club both on and off the pitch, with the highlight so far being an exhilarating 57 off 23balls against Brixworth. We are however trying to find him a job over the summer months to help fund his trip. If anyone has any work available orwould like him to carry out any handy man tasks please contact him on 07391 446352.

Are you Coeliac?Would you like to join a supportgroup?I thought it would be a good idea to form an informal support groupfor people in this area who have been diagnosed as Coeliac. A fewof us got together in April at Jeyes in the conservatory for a coffeeand a gluten-free cake! We swapped life stories, recipes, goodplaces to eat and where to shop for tasty food.

We were all free on a Friday morning and met at 10am when theshop was a bit quieter. However, we can arrange to meetwhenever it suits all of us, or could meet in smaller groups, depending on whether we work or not. The end of June would bea good time to meet again.

If you would be interested in joining us, or putting your name onour list to be kept in touch with information, please ring me. Lookforward to meeting you.

Dear Eric,

I just had to write to you as I am dissatisfied with thecurrent service I am getting from my postman.Unfortunately, he doesn’t push it all the way in. Notonly does it leave half of it exposed to the view of anypassers-by, it also leads to it on occasion, gettingrather soggy. To add to my dissatisfaction, Isometimes have to wait until after mid-day before Iget it. Do you have any suggestions?

Regards,

Rosie

Dear Rosie,

I think you should address this issue directly with yourpostman. Just tell him that you would prefer it if hepushed it right in. If this doesn’t work, you could relocateto Pheasant Crescent where I live. My Hilda says that weget a fantastic service. She always gets it before 10.00 am(when I am out at work) and never has to remind himabout how far to push it in, even though the letter box israther low.

Hope that this helps,

Eric

Dear Eric...Dear Eric...Dear Eric,

My wife watches a lot of television and keeps up to date with the news. She keeps talking about June 23rd and asks me if I would prefer to beout or in. I have looked at the calendar and see that the 23rd is aThursday. For us the question of in or out normally happens first thingon the second Sunday of each month. I am perplexed. Should I go alongwith this new routine? My preference, even though it is a Thursday, would be to be in, though I know that her choice would be to be out.

Can you enlighten me?

Yours sincerely,

Tim

Dear Tim,

I think you may have got the wrong end of the stick. On Thursday 23rd June, the UK will vote either to remain in or leave the European Union. I’m not intopolitics, but from what I’ve learnt so far, I don’t think it matters which wayyou vote. If we remain in, the ‘stay in’ supporters argue that the economy willbe better and that immigration can be controlled. If we leave, the ‘get out’supporters argue that the economy will be better and that immigration canbe controlled. I think it comes down to which politicians you like better. The‘stay in’ brigade includes the very caring Mr Cameron and his friend JeremyCorbyn. The ‘get out’ brigade includes the rather unassuming Michel Groveand his friend Nigel Farage. It’s a difficult choice. Good luck.

Eric

NB I hope that the second Sunday of each month routine continues.

In June the Queen celebrates her 90th birthday. As head of state, Her Majesty isalso is the Head of the Church of England and throughout her life she has spokenabout how important her faith has been to her. I found myself being reminded ofher considered and prayerful leadership as I read recently about a previous king,William Rufus, and the way he treated the church and especially St Anselm ofCanterbury.

The Roman Catholic Church in Earls Barton is dedicated to Anselm, an 11thcentury saint who was born in Aosta in northern Italy in 1033, became aBenedictine monk and then succeeded as Archbishop of Canterbury in 1093. Theprevious Archbishop of Canterbury had died 3 years earlier and the law at thetime said that if there was no archbishop all the rent and taxes from theCanterbury lands went to the king.

The king was William Rufus, the son of William the Conqueror. One noted historianhas written that Rufus seems to have combined the virtues of an Americangangster with those of a South American dictator! Not surprisingly he wasdetermined to keep the position unfilled as long as possible. In fact he swore thatneither Anselm nor anyone else should be archbishop so long as he lived.

So how did Anselm become archbishop? Well not long after this Rufus went downwith a violent illness which brought him to death's door. The frightened king thenchanged his mind and nominated Anselm archbishop of Canterbury and alsopromised to govern the country properly.

Anselm was a good choice for archbishop. He had spent many years as head ofa monastery in France and as well as looking after a large community of monks,he had written many important works on faith and why Christians believe whatthey do. One of his most famous phrases is ‘faith seeking understanding’ and thissums up his efforts to explain the big questions of faith; questions like: Is there aGod and if so what is he like? How could there be one God but in three persons? And why did Jesus have to die on the cross? His wise and considered answerswere very influential and are still important today.

Unfortunately, Anselm didn’t feel he was suitably qualified for a position asimportant as being archbishop and he didn’t think he could cope with King Rufus, who, almost to prove the point, told the church that if they wanted him they wouldhave to pay him 1000 marks, a considerable sum of money in those days.

Anselm came to the conclusion that he was called to defend the church and workon behalf of the people against this despotic king. In a foreshadowing of eventswith King John and Magna Carta in 1215, the English barons also rallied to his

support and Rufus climbed down. This wasn’t quite the end of the story as Rufusoften went back on his promises and seemed intent on picking a fight wheneverthe opportunity arose, but Anselm showed that as well as being a spiritual leaderhe could stand up to the king. He also stood up for all classes of people and wasone of the first to speak out against slavery.

Thankfully these days we do not have to worry about such conflicts. Our queenhas been a wonderful example of hard work and dedication to her peoplethroughout her reign. She has also been a lot less controversial than herpredecessor William Rufus. So we all join to wish her a very happy 90th birthday!Greg

Barton Today June 2016

Deacon's Diary - June 2016Everytime you flick through this magazine there are contributionsto be found from each of the Christian churches in our village. Some may wonder why we bother. After all, religious faith is apersonal matter is it not? Why should not people be just left aloneto do their own thing as they please or not as the case may be?What is it with these Christian people that they just will not leavepeople alone to get on with our lives? What is it that drives themon? Are they bonkers? Where do they get their faith andperseverance from?

The answer is simple. The Holy Spirit.

The coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles some twothousand years ago is celebrated at Pentecost which was on the15th. May this year. The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of theBlessed Trinity and is the very power of the inspiration of GodHimself. When Christians are called to follow Jesus Christ, theyare being influenced by the Holy Spirit. Christ’s Church on earthcarries out the instructions given to St. Peter:

“You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. And thegates of the underworld can never hold out against it. I will giveyou the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind onearth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose onearth shall be considered loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16: 18-19)

The Holy Spirit is at work in all those baptised Christians who livetheir lives under the power of his inspiration and will. Then comesthe realisation that this is not just a personal matter. We arecommanded to spread the Good news of the Gospel of JesusChrist. We are required to baptise all who will believe, in the nameof the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We are requiredto work for the powers of good over evil, to feed the hungry,

provide for the thirsty, make strangers welcome, clothe the naked, visit the sick and the imprisoned. Our lives cannot be just a matterof quietly minding our own business and indulging ourselves whilstignoring others in need.

Our task is to make the love of God obvious to others, especiallyto those who may doubt, are disillusioned, cynical or even broken.

The power and inspiration for all of this comes from the Holy Spiritand takes us out ourselves and away from the sin of single-mindedselfishness. Under the influence of the Holy Spirit our priorities arealtered. The deepest possible fulfilment and the peace of Christcan be found and then finally the ultimate reward of eternal life.

Not as bonkers as some might think.

“Come O Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle withinus the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall becreated and You shall renew the face of the earth.”

Every blessing, Deacon Peter - St. Anselm’s Catholic [email protected]

Barton Today June 2016

Hello Barton Today readers! I’m Laura White, I live in EarlsBarton and have done pretty much my whole life and the reasonI’ve written this article is because I need your help!

I’m currently on a placement year as part of my Geographydegree at Plymouth University and during this placement year Iam working as a Technical Research Officer at Waterwise whoare a water efficiency not for profit organisation. One of mycurrent roles whilst working for Waterwise is to lead the pilot ofa brand new project that Waterwise are running called the GreatBritish Water Watch, with the pilot being run right here in EarlsBarton.

As a result, we need residents of Earls Barton to take part in thepilot of the Great British Water Watch! If this pilot goes wellthen the aim is to then roll out the Great British Water Watch toa bigger geographical area and eventually the whole of GreatBritain.

So what is the Great British Water Watch all about and why areWaterwise doing it? Well, here is some more information aboutthe project…

What is the Great British Water Watch?

The Great British Water Watch (GBWW) is a citizen scienceproject run by Waterwise to gather data on household wateruse. The project will be trialled in Earls Barton during the weekof 13th-19th June 2016. As the GBWW is a citizen scienceproject, we want people to gather the household water use datathemselves.

Who are Waterwise and why are Waterwise doing the GreatBritish Water Watch?

Founded in 2005, Waterwise is an independent, not-for-profitorganisation that receives funding from the UK water industry, sponsorship and research projects. Since then, Waterwise havebecome the leading authority on water efficiency both in the UKand in Europe. We like to be out front, leading and supportinginnovative efforts that will help achieve our mission; that waterefficiency will be integral to everyone’s life.

Put simply, we want to everyone to use water wisely, everydayand everywhere. So, in order to help us achieve this we need tolearn about and try to understand people’s water saving habits, behaviour and knowledge. And that’s where the GBWW comes

in, as this project willhelp us gather thiskind of information:how much waterpeople use, whatthey do to save waterand their opinions onsaving water etc.

The majority of thedata from this projectwill also be used aspart of myundergraduatedissertation projectfor my Geographydegree at PlymouthUniversity where Iwill be looking at thelevel of awarenessthat households inEarls Barton havewith regards to theirwater consumption.

What does theGBWW involve?

Becoming a GBWW scientistis easy!

Once your household hassigned-up to the Great BritishWater Watch then you willreceive a GBWW pack viapost. The GBWW pack willcontain:

- A GBWW guide whichcovers details of the project(what it involves, informationabout the data usage etc.)

-A permission slip forparents/guardians to signshould children be present inthe household and takingpart in the GBWW (i.e. fillingout the postcards)

-3 different coloured water watch cards for 3 different areas ofthe house where water is used: 4 x blue for the bathroom, 1 xorange for the kitchen/utility and 1x green for the garden/outdoorspace

-A pre-paid envelope for the water watch cards and the GBWWproject feedback form to be returned to us in

-A GBWW project feedback form

Each of the 3 coloured water watch cards will have a frequencytable on with the various water using activities typically carriedout in that room. During the GBWW week (13th-19th June 2016)members of your household simply tally (|||| ||) on the frequencytable in the appropriate column (depending on the water usingactivity) every time they carry out a water using activity in thatroom- brushing their teeth for example.

Once the GBWW week has finished, your household simplypost us (Waterwise) back all the water watch cards you’ve talliedon plus the GBWW project feedback form by popping the waterwatch cards and feedback form into the pre-paid envelopeprovided in your GBWW pack.

At the end of the pilot, your household will receive a ‘Thank You’pack.

How do households sign-up?

If you live in Earls Barton and you’d like to sign-up to take part inthe GBWW pilot then you can do this by either:

-Going onto the Great British Water Watch page on theWaterwise website (www.waterwise.org.uk/pages/gbww.html)and filling out the sign-up form by Friday 3rd June 2016

-Visiting me (Laura) at Earls Barton Library on either Thursday2nd or Friday 3rd June 2016

(Please note that the household member filling out the GBWWsign-form must be aged 18 or over.)

If you’d like more information including details regarding the datacollected as part of the pilot project then please have a look atthe GBWW Guide: www.waterwise.org.uk/pages/gbww.html

And if you have any questions about any aspect of the GBWWpilot project then please don’t hesitate to get in touch byemailing me, my email address is [email protected].

So please, get involved, become a Great British Water Watcherand help save water in the Earls Barton community!

Thanks for reading!

Best wishes,

Laura & the Waterwise team ☺
