It Really Is Great To Be Back! When I handed the magazine over last November, I never, ever believed that I would be writing this column again… Sue and I were away; taking a year’s sabbatical from all things Earls Barton and that, we thought was that. But gradually things changed. People began coming up to us in the street, whispering: “What’s happened to Barton Today?” The whispers became shouts and soon: “Bring Back Barton Today!” was the call. There was obviously a Barton Today-shaped hole in everybody’s lives – and in their hearts. “I never know what’s going on in the village without the magazine!” said one reader to me. “I really miss the noise it used to make as it came through the letterbox!” said another “I’d pick it up with a smile as if welcoming an old friend… Well, here we are, back with you, and with much gratitude to Steve Dodds and the Pennycate family who kept the flame going, eventually bringing together a whole new team raring to go with a new Barton Today, very much modelled on the old… The team will be introduced to you by Sheila who, as Managing Editor, ably assisted by Sally, will be in full charge of the large team of volunteers who are giving up their spare time to ensure that your village magazine gets delivered to you every month. Special thanks, too to Clare Elsby who has given so much of her time ‘pro bono’ to set up the new magazine as a Community Interest Company -read her article on Page 21 if you’d like to set up a non-profit-making community group locally. We are developing the Social Media side of publishing by having a voice on the internet through our new website, Facebook and Twitter. There’s a whole new world out there since B2Day was conceived seven years ago and we mean to be a part of it. Where would be without Sublime Media? In fact where would we be without the many local businesses that are supporting your magazine through advertising and promotion? Finally, thank you to all those stalwarts - the Distributors, almost all of whom have returned to face the rain, hail and snow to bring you your favourite village magazine. God bless you all! Of course there’s some weird old fellow, well past retirement age, who wanders around the editorial meetings, poking his nose in, making the tea and laying out the Jammie Dodgers while the team get on with the real job. They’ll soon be rid of him… It’s great to be back, we’ve all missed you!

Earls Barton Cricketer Set To Make England Debut Steve writes: What happened in 1963? It was the year President Kennedy was assassinated, the Beatles had their first number one hit Love Me Do and children trembled behind the sofa, as the Daleks were seen for the very first time on television. It was also the year a fresh faced 19 year old Yorkshire lad left his home behind in the small town of Easingwold, to move to the southern delights of Earls Barton. Raymond Arthur Waite was born on January 17 in 1944. Nineteen years later, having honed his all round physical skills in God’s own country, his love of sport brought him to Northamptonshire, where he was to take up a semi professional football contract with Wellingborough Town. When he first arrived in Earls Barton, he lived with his aunt and uncle in Harcourt Square before marrying a local girl, Daphne, and he has been in Earls Barton ever since. Even though he has been in the village for nearly fifty years, he’s still not, as his wife reminds him, a proper Bartonian! Ray had a very successful time playing football for Wellingborough Town, briefly interrupted by a broken leg in 1973 playing away to Gloucester. His most memorable season was 1969/70, when Wellingborough won the Metropolitan League. At that time, their opponents included teams like Tottenham A, Arsenal A and West Ham A, who took the chance to blood up and coming youngsters like Steve Perryman. During his career, Ray also played against many other well known players including John Charles who was player manager for Merthyr Tydfil. Ray’s arrival in Earls Barton in 1963 marked the beginning of his cricket career with the Earls Barton Cricket Club. At 67 years old, and 49 seasons later, he is till turning out regularly for the side, flitting between the firsts and the seconds. No other cricketer in the county league can claim to have had such a lengthy career. In the early days he was a batsman first and foremost but over the years he turned his skills to bowling and has become a spin bowler to be feared. Unlike some of the other more mature

players at the club he does not know exactly his batting and bowling averages. He remembers though, the centuries he scored against Raunds and Wolverton and taking five wickets for two runs against Poddington. He has been a member of a championship winning Earls Barton team on no fewer than nine occasions, plus two times as a knock out trophy winner. The highlight (so far) of his playing days was in 1991 when Earls Barton won the League Plate at the County Ground.

The ever youthful Ray White It is fascinating to listen to him as he looks back over the years; how he opened the batting with Andy Kearns for nigh on twenty year and how he played with current players’ fathers who have long since retired. Then there were the amusing episodes: the day the Barton fielder on the boundary didn’t even see the ball rolling past him for four because he was too busy picking blackberries, or the day the Barton innings had to be declared closed after nine wickets because their number eleven batsman had disappeared behind the hedge with his girlfriend – picking blackberries presumably! Ray’s cricketing career has taken him beyond Earls Barton. He has played representative cricket for the Northamptonshire over 50s team since 1994, having played 95 games and amassing 130 wickets. This current season has marked the beginning of a county over 60s team and inevitably, Ray has featured prominently once again, taking 15 wickets to date.But perhaps Ray’s finest moment has yet to arrive. He has been chosen to represent the England team in their very first ever over 60s international match. Players were chosen on the basis of how well they had done in this season’s over 60s county matches. The selectors could not ignore Ray’s cricketing feats for Northamptonshire and he has been chosen to play in the England v Wales game at the Ombersley ground in Worcestershire. Playing alongside him incidentally, will be Ray Swann, father of current test player Graeme Swann. By now, Ray has made his debut at international level. I’m sure it is moment that he will look back upon with great pride. If you see him around, ask him how it all went. He might even show you his England shirt. As for the future, Ray is not yet ready to put away his bat and ball, well at least not until he has completed his 50th season for Earls Barton. Perhaps, he might then be declared an honorary Bartonian…

The Gallery Has Not Gone West in West Street! John at Gallery West 24 is most grateful and touched by the many kind wishes (including a farewell card) he has received following ‘news’ of his gallery’s impending closure. IN MEMORIAM

Linda Ward 1946 - 2011

For those of us who were in the village drama group in the 1970s, there was only one ‘Linda’. We knew her then as Linda Turner and before she joined us she was already a very professional singer and dancer. Glamorous, talented and beautiful, she soon moved on to full professional work. But all of us can remember her interpretation of the Prince in the “Little Red Riding Hood” village pantomime in 1977 (particularly the scene in one performance when the sword she was meant to kill the Big Bad Wolf with was knocked into the audience by accident. She ended up throttling the villain to loud cheers from everybody…). She and John moved to Spain six years ago, but she still remembered Earls Barton. She wrote a number of articles for Barton Today about her life in the Iberian Peninsula. Being Linda, she made many friends in her new home and rapidly picked up the language. She was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer at a late stage and after a short illness she died on June 7 of this year. Her memorial service at Earls Barton Baptist chapel on July 28 was packed with friends and relatives. It was a time of sadness, but also of joy, as her life was celebrated by everyone there. Linda touched so many people’s hearts, she made so many friends, and she will always be remembered.

Earls Barton and District Historical Society Frank Batten writes: Around twenty members of the Earls Barton and District Historical Society visited 78 Derngate in July. We were struck by how deceptively small the house is and the very individual interior designs. Our 2011 / 2012 season of meetings will commence on Friday September 16, when our guest speaker will be Mr Michael Deacon who will be presenting a talk about Sir Christopher Hatton, the Tudor courtier. The Historical Society is supporting the museum in its project to publish a book about the men that are named on the village war memorial. If anyone can help this project in anyway, with stories or memorabilia relating to these men, or would like to be involved in the project, our meetings will provide an opportunity to get to know the people that are already involved. Our meetings are held at the St John Ambulance building on Manor Road and start at 7:30 pm. Visitors are more than welcome at all of our meetings. Gill says: “For my part, the work I have put into hand-painting over one hundred cards, is in memory of my husband, John Metcalfe, who sadly died suddenly last Christmas. If you hear the bells ringing today, these ring for what would have been his sixty-fifth birthday. My good friend Kathy, also a member of the Christchurch Art Group, is an equal partner in this venture and has produced her work whilst continuing all her church pastoral work, no mean achievement! Many people have kindly helped us make this exhibition possible and we ask for your support and your company on this day. We look forward to seeing you at our Exhibition.” The exhibition will take place at Earls Barton Parish Hall, 10.00 am – 3.00 pm on Saturday October 29.

Spotlight to SHINE on All Saints…

Simon writes: A truly wonderful evening of stories retold and atmospheres recreated will take place at All Saints’ Church, Earls Barton, on Saturday October 1 starting at 7.00pm. As part of a celebration of Northamptonshire’s medieval history through its ancient and historic Churches, All Saints’ Earls Barton will host an amazing event that will begin outside with a spectacular illumination set to music. This introduction will highlight key historic details relating to All Saints’ and include well known village characters talking about the Church, its beauty and importance to both village and community life. The Church will be progressively lit until each feature is fully revealed. The audience will be invited inside, to explore a number of ‘digital playgrounds’ with interactive areas brining to life the history of All Saints’ Church and the important part it has played in village life over the centuries. Each feature will include snippets from community members about their memories of times gone by and what real life was like for previous generations. Recollections of christenings, weddings and celebrations that have taken place in the Church, will be illustrated though contemporary sound and images provided from the collection held at the Earls Barton Museum. A number of music stations will be setup with pre-recorded music played as people approach. It will be possible to change the music, using an interactive panel, to listen to organ recitals, hymns and bell-ringing specific to earlier times in the Church’s history - Anglo-Saxon, Norman French, Latin and early English. In the pulpit, a narrative will be heard, delivered in the style of a sermon, which focuses on Community, congregation and past Vicars! This will be interspersed with memories from local community, both past and present. As a finale, there will be a short musical performance by the Church Choir and other local musicians. Weather permitting, this will be held outside and accompanied by a spectacular lighting display illuminating the whole Church. After the finale, displays inside the Church will remain open until 10.00 pm and the Church itself will stay illuminated until midnight, acting as a beacon to the wider community. Warm refreshments are to be provided outside during the event. All the displays, videos, photos, memories and musical recordings used for the event will remain available on an online website www.shine-northamptonshire.com as a legacy of what promises to be a unique evening celebrating the life and history of our Church and village life over the centuries. Hokey Cokey Meets Old MacDonald! There's a farm called Misery, but of that we'll have none Because we know of one, That's always lots of fun… Monday July 11 was a beautiful sunny day with the temperature touching 24°C when Earls Barton’s own Hokey Cokey Club turned up to enjoy their visit to West Lodge Rural Centre, near Kettering. And this one's name is Jollity; believe me, folks, it's great For everything sings out to us as we go through the gate… It wasn’t only the children who enjoyed the exhibits and animals – the Mums had a good time too! There were pony rides for the kids, piglet racing, meetings with the lambs, the rabbits and the pigs, and lots of petting corners where everyone could touch and stroke the animals at the farm.

All the little pigs, they grunt and howl The cats mee-yow, the dogs bow-wow Everybody makes a row, down on Jollity Farm… The biggest bit of fun though was the sandpit, although we did notice quite a few Mums throw abandon into the air and go on the “barrel ride” (don’t ask) around the farm. Today’s The Day The Teddy Bears Have Their Picnic… Well it certainly was on Thursday August 11 when AllBears@AllSaints held their annual Teddy Bears Picnic in the Parish Hall! Picture nearly thirty pre-schoolers plus their Parents, Grandparents or Carers, all joining in the fun, thanks to the sterling work of Kathleen who organised the event and Jacqui who managed to run things, without the aid of a sound system (Brave Girl!).

On arrival there were a couple of events involving making and colouring Teddy Bear pictures (every child, of course, had brought their own, real-life Teddy) as well as decorating their own “Teddy Bear Biscuits”. Mmm! Delicious! Then there were the games, which takes some doing (a bit like herding cats, actually). Thank the Lord for ‘Sleeping Bunnies’. After the games everyone piled into the food, prepared by those stalwarts in the kitchen: Grace, Kathy, Jenny, Lorna and Margaret. As we all ate, sipped, and enjoyed our plates of food the grown-ups commented on the rain bucketing down outside, thankful that the event had been organised indoors. After a fun parachute game, we all joined in the Hokey Cokey. And I mean all. Then with thanks to the Vicar and all those involved in the organisation, we all headed back home, happy, replete, and humming “Today’s the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic” to ourselves… AllBears takes place on every second and fourth Thursday of the month in All Saints Church. Meetings this month are Thursdays September 8 and 22. More details from the Vicar, but just turn up and make friends with other carers while the children have fun!

Phil Raises Money for Machu Picchu Trek! Bartonian Phil Holliday will be trekking to Machu Picchu in Peru, to raise money for the Anthony Nolan Charity, leaving the UK on September 30th and returning ten days later. He has been preparing for this event over the past six months, and raising sponsorship through an online website. To assist in his endeavours, there is a fundraising afternoon at Earls Barton Parish Hall (opposite the Co-op) on Saturday September 17. This will be an opportunity to raise awareness of the Anthony Nolan Trust and to raise funds. He hopes to have a number of stalls and activities such as a book sale, refreshments, children’s activities, art exhibition, sale and raffle, so please support it.

Sheringham 2011 Indoor Boy’s Brigade Camp! ‘I do like to be beside the seaside!’ Gary writes: The 1st Earls Barton Boys' Brigade certainly did enjoy themselves, from Friday May 28 - Monday 30 this year as boys and officers joined together for a weekend of fun and laughter. On the Friday the company made the journey to the East Coast to the small fishing town of Sheringham, for their annual indoor camping trip. The boys and officers took part in a number of activities including: pitch and put, sporting games, fun on beach and even an evening of cabaret back at our weekend home ‘Green Hedges’.

Stars in Sport? Over the summer our Junior boys from the 1st Earls Barton Boys’ Brigade took part in the battalion sports day in Northampton. All our Brigaders did really well and we had seven first and second winning places within the company. Overall our boys came 4th in the battalion sports day and we are really proud of them all.

The untimely demise of Amy Winehouse this summer has given all of us much to think

about when it comes to the curse of addictions. Everyone has an opinion to give vent to, from ‘hope-less junkie’ through ‘waste of an incredible talent’ to ‘never liked her anyway’ whatever your opinion; she was someone’s daughter, some-one’s sister, someone’s friend. Fact.

As a former addict, Russell Brand paid tribute in his own way, and I quote:-

When you love someone who suf-fers from the disease of addiction you await the phone call. There will be a phone call. The sincere hope is that the call will be from the addict themselves, telling you they’ve had enough, that they’re ready to stop, ready to try something new. Of course though, you fear the other call, the sad nocturnal chime from a friend or relative telling you it’s too late, she’s gone.

Frustratingly it’s not a call you can ever make it must be received. It is impossible to intervene.

He concluded by saying:- We need to review the way society treats addicts, not as criminals but as sick people in need of care. We need to look at the way our government funds rehabilitation. It is cheaper to rehabilitate an addict than to send them to prison, so criminalisation doesn’t even make economic sense. Not all of us know someone with the incredible talent that Amy had but we all know drunks and junkies and they all need help and the help

is out there. All they have to do is pick up the phone and make the call. Or not. Either way, there will be a phone call.

Whatever your stance on this emo-tive topic, I’m sure you’ll agree that that’s a very moving piece, written straight from the heart.

So what is an addict?

What defines you as an addict has little to do with the amount that you drink or quantity of drugs that you use. Equally, it has nothing to do with the time that you have been us-ing or misusing drugs or alcohol.

You can be said to be an addict:

1 When your habit starts to interfere with your ‘normal’ daily life; when you start to put your habit before everything else.

2 When you crave the next drink or ‘line’ and have no control over that feeling.

3 When you conceal your drink or drug supply and put the buying and scoring ahead of everything else.

4 When you stop caring about oth-ers, your work, your family and life in general.

5 When you start to isolate and blame others for your predica-ment.

6 When you continually deny that you have a problem and yet have just lost your driving licence, your job, your relationships and your finances.

This is often referred to as “hitting rock bottom.”...and it is not your fault (although you are responsible for your recovery). Addiction - particu-larly alcoholism is closely connected to depression, but most alcoholic addicts would rather describe them-selves as depressed than as an alco-holic or drug addict. Many addiction specialists believe that addiction is a disease and a very serious illness that affects you both physically and mentally.

The illness is progressive and insidi-ous - the addict is unlikely to realise how ill they have become or how abnormal their behaviour is. The addict is only trying to be normal but they feel different and use their sub-stance in order to make themselves feel normal.

It has nothing to do with a lack of determination, strength of character or self will.

So, what’s to be done? We know it goes on, but most of us pretend it’s not happening. And how do we keep those we love out of the way of temptation? One option comes in the form of youth group, Ignite. Turn to page 13 and read Tim Howells’ column to find out more.

Helping Northampton's Homeless Earls Barton’s own parish church of All Saints plans to have a regular day to collect donations for NAASH at Acorn House, so please bring what you can to help on the first Sunday of each month to help Northampton Association for Accommodation for the Single and Homeless. The next date for donations will be September 4. At the moment they are especially in need of the following food items: tinned food, especially chopped tomatoes and beans, rice and strawberry jam. However any items from the regular list below would also be appreciated. NAASH provides accommodation and rehabilitation support as well as some services at the door for street homeless, when possible. Blankets or quilts are given out to people living rough. The following items are regularly needed: Bedding: single duvet covers, pillow cases. Clothing: socks, gloves, hats, scarves. Food: tinned foods, cereals, sugar, tea and coffee. Toiletries: toothpaste and toothbrushes, shower and bath gels, bubble bath, shaving gel/foam, bath towels. Members of All Saints congregation enjoyed another bring and share lunch in the parish hall on Sunday July 17 after the morning service. As Lorna Forey, one of the organisers said” We all enjoyed a most delicious lunch with good food, god fellowship and good fun! The Problem: Dark Times Ahead for the Youth of Today

By Charlie The Youth Worker Life is tough for everyone, in these difficult times, caused by reckless banking practices and reinforced by politicians worldwide. However, the cuts have not really started, and will not really kick in until next year. Until then you will probably be alright if you have a job. Much as I would love to rant some more, the focus of my message is the impact on young people.

some will project their anger and frustration onto their kids...

When parents lose their jobs or get their benefits cut, the ones that feel it most are their children. Whilst many parents, singly or jointly will work harder and do what it takes to put food on the table, some will project their anger and frustration onto their kids. I run a youth project in the county and know of several young people I work with who would not eat if I did not feed them. Only last month, the organisation Shelter was talking about the 100,000 young people who run away from home each year - some as young as eight. 84% of young homeless people are ex-runaways. The reasons children run away is always the same – fleeing from violence, abuse, chaos or relationship breakdown. This statistic will only get worse…

crime is expected to increase significantly…

Furthermore theft-related crime is expected to increase significantly as people, helpless and desperate, try and steal their way out of their troubles - ironically stealing from similarly desperate people more often than not. But my big gripe is how this disproportionately targets young people. Small businesses are hurting and when they try and cut their costs, like any business the first thing to go is training. Where young people are concerned, the first area cut is apprenticeships. County-wide there are scores of courses for young people who want to be a plumber where they can go to college one day per week. How many plumbing employers are actually recruiting young people to be placed with them as an apprentice? You guessed it – a big fat zero. The only reason these courses exist is through parent power, persuading friends and relatives to take on their children, but if you do not have those networks - forget it. College worked when young people could see employment at the end of it or got supported through it.

ALL the revolutions across the Middle East and the defaulted indebted countries of Europe have begun with young people, especially when youth unemployment hits 25% plus. Part of the rationale for the G20 summit was to focus on the epidemic of youth unemployment. Young people with the lack of self-control do not need much encouragement to torch a car and throw rocks at the police (see Belfast July 2011) or throw a fire extinguisher off the roof (see student riots in London November 2010.)

breeding the optimum conditions for disaffected, disengaged young people

Our government has seen the riots and demonstrations in Spain and Greece and do not want it to happen here, but austerity measures which disproportion-nally affect young people, are breeding the optimum conditions for disaffected, disengaged young people to turn to at best yob –like behaviour and at worst, terrorism, or racist attacks against “Johnny Foreigner” taking ‘our’ jobs or threatening ‘our’ security. Young people today are demanding consumers. They often have the attention span of a goldfish and get bored very easily. They have been trained to demand the icing on the cake now, and rarely want to eat the sponge of hard work and commitment to get it!

The MTV generation have become used to getting instant downloads, social media through their phones and “touch the red button to go interactive right here and right now”. Their staying power is non-existent and they will quit anything which takes hard work – new hobbies, school, part time jobs, paper rounds or whatever. They will have no money if their carer’s have no money, their leisure choices are limited especially in rural areas and the chances of them getting into crime, anti-social behaviour, theft, arson or more rises significantly. Crime in the six week holidays always peaks. The only community I have ever worked in which did not have such a crime boom had huge resources deployed through local authorities, police and health services. These included street-based youth workers on Friday nights specifically targeting underage drinkers in

open spaces and deterring associated risk-taking such as unprotected sex,. They also had youth clubs open every night of the week, day time trips and park based activities, daily information, advice, support drop-ins and day time special interest projects such as urban art, Djing, sports, dance and drama. Northamptonshire does not have this at all. Less than a year ago there was free swimming for all under 16s, but since the first wave of cuts, Connexions shops have been shut down, including those in Wellingborough and Northampton. Three very large youth clubs are being ‘relocated’ as the land gets sold off. One of these is: The Farm in East Northampton. Community Police services, especially rural ones are being merged and officers redeployed and, just to give young people maximum opportunity to get into crime, all the lights are being turned off!

Youth work works. It plugs the gaps in failing communities, supports an education system which seems to be aimed at developing conformists and moulding ‘responsible’ citizens than nurturing and encouraging free thinking, self discovery and meeting individual learning needs. It has moved on immeasurably from the stereotypical youth club of ping pong and pool tournaments. Workers provide a range of planned and spontaneous learning opportunities for young people to develop the skills, values and attitudes to successfully make that transition from child to adult. Young people often do not realise this is happening – for them it is a safe space to hang out with friends and have fun, but months later they realise the impact that youth workers have made on their lives – as mentors, supporters, advocates, inspirers, teachers, counsellors, encouragers, esteem builders, and so much more. The legacy leaves youth workers more able then ever to measure, record and acknowledge young people’s learning and achievement through their interaction with youth services. If these cuts affect young people and lead them to crime and disorder the public will react, demanding that something must be done to address the youth issues and of course investment in youth services and initiatives will follow… The tragedy is that sustained investment in our young people – their futures and their leisure time, is a much more efficient use of resources than the cyclical shutting down and re-starting services. Yes, I fear dark times ahead, literally and metaphorically…

The Solution: Welcome to Ignite Youth Project -Two Brand New Youth Clubs- Here in Earls Barton!

Tim discusses his ideas with members of the community, county councillor, George Blackwell and the Vicar, Miranda Heyes

There are only two ways to deal with the austerity imposed upon us by the economic incompetence of bankers and previous governments: Either you wring your hands, shake your heads and fear the worse, or you roll up your sleeves and do something. Earls Barton has chosen to do the latter. Call it The Big Society, or just call it Community Action – in our village it’s called The Ignite Youth Project, or Ignite for short. Thanks to an articulate, hard-working Youth Worker in the shape of Tim Howell and a vicar with gumption and guts – our own Rev. Miranda Hayes, a new youth initiative will launch on September 11 in Earls Barton. “I managed to secure £7,000 of funding from the County Council, the department responsible was being closed –I just made it!” says Tim Howell the Youth Worker giving his time and talents free to our community. “I welcome an opportunity for this church to be involved,” says Miranda, “we are giving space and helping with volunteers and resources.” So what is Ignite going to be about? Tim again: “It’s a new youth project for all young people from Earls Barton. It will run on Sunday evenings at All Saints Church Hall.

The Junior Club for Years 7-9 will run from 6.00 -7.00 pm and a Senior Club for Years 9-13 will run from 7.30-9.00 pm.

It aims to offer something different with an innovative technological 'hook' to attract older young people into activities and offering a safe place to meet, as Ignite seeks to meet their needs for social, emotional and spiritual development.” There will be a Sound Studio, Games Consoles; Apple Macs with “Garage Band” Software…the list is endless. And the young people will have their own say through their Youth Council, on the design and development of the project. What with the concerns and threats of our modern age, Ignite offers a safe space for all ages to have fun and to meet their holistic needs as members of Earls Barton Community. Quality and standards are assured by the County Council (prominent council member, George Blackwell was delighted with the ideas put forward “A great idea!” he says) and membership of the Northamptonshire Association of Youth Clubs gives access to staff and training for a series of events, workshops and of course, fun! “There will be at least one major celebration event each year which the youth can organise and take part in,” says Tim. “Also we plan a fundraising sleepover in aid of Crisis At Christmas, the homelessness charity. Because of the grant all activities can be offered free of charge with no admission fee.” Already a group of older teenagers are helping to choose the music equipment for the studio and are starting to think about a gig night to showcase local music talent for DJs, MCs and budding X Factor contestants! So Charlie the Youth Worker (opposite) may fear ‘Darker Days Ahead’ but at least we are ready to deal with the criminals and drug-pedlars who are aiming to take away our young people’s lives. As the instructions on every firecracker say: “IGNITE and STAND WELL BACK!”

Northampton Lift Tower Abseil

Sally writes: When I first travelled to Northampton from the East coast while property hunting 11 years ago, I saw the lift tower and knew I had to abseil down it! It took all these years for an opportunity to present itself but I finally got the chance back in July. Before that though, unfortunately there were two aborted attempts in May and June due to high winds creating a vortex of wind around the tower. The first time we were informed before we got there but the second time we had to wait for several hours watching the lines become tangled and the abseilers blown around at the top of the tower! I am so glad I did not abseil during those high winds but the wait just added to the excitement and anticipation before I eventually got to do it myself. Eventually the weather improved and on a sunny Saturday in late July, 100 or so of us abseiled off the national lift tower and highest building in Northamptonshire to the cheering and calling of our family below. A small group of us, including Simon Gidney our Features Ed from the village, were shown up to the first station within the tower to get out harnesses on and prepare for the drop! From there three of us at a time were taken by lift three quarters of the way up to take the final stage by stairs to the very top. Here I was strapped to the ropes and given some instruction on how to feed the rope through the guards and lower myself down. The view over the countryside was absolutely amazing with Matchbox cars and Lego houses below.

I felt pleased and relieved to have completed the abseil but wanted to do it all over again! Thanks to the generosity of friends and family I raised over £200 for MAG, a mine clearance charity so not only did I have a once in a lifetime experience but raised much needed funds for this worthwhile organisation. MAG employs and trains local de-miners to remove land mines and unexploded ordnance, and educates those living and working in contaminated areas how to live in safety once the conflict has ended. MAG is co-laureate of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize for recognition of its work with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. What I had not realised is the history or importance of the lift tower. Here is a whistle stop tour of its past: The National Lift Tower is 127m (418ft) purpose built lift testing tower in the centre of Northampton. It was build by the Express Lift Company and was officially opened by HRH Queen Elizabeth on November 12 1982. The tower fell out of use in 1997 when Express lifts were taken over by Otis, one of the biggest lift companies in the world, and the area was then developed into housing. However, the tower was granted listed building status and so could not be demolished, and this is why we have the odd situation of a lift testing tower in the middle of a housing estate. In 2008 the tower was privately bought and refurbished to bring it back to its former glory. It is now available to companies to carry out research, development and testing of lifts as well as partnering with the University of Northampton that specialises in lift engineering education and research. Future plans for the tower include a visitors centre, cafe and conference facilities so all in all it is a very interesting and worthwhile landmark of which Northamptonshire should be proud!

Next thing I was asked was to hang my bottom over the edge and to slowly walk off the edge and down the wall. This was the bit that worried me! Would I be able to walk backwards into oblivion and trust the ropes? I could and I did! It was not nearly as scary as I expected and the descent was quite controlled and enjoyable except for the odd time where I bumped into the instructor or spun on the ropes. After fifteen minutes or so, I reached the bottom to greet the family and get out of the restrictive harness!

Thoughts of a New Bowler… by ‘The Novice’ Having watched the members bowling on tour I thought I would give it a go, after all what can be difficult about sending a bowl down towards a white ball (sorry the jack!). So off I went and bought the kit needed, including a set of second hand bowls - but not any ordinary bowls, these were the bowls that had won club championships in the past. No pressure there! An important part of the Bowls’ fraternity is the dress code so I made sure I was correctly dressed (I hoped) with my pull along trolley containing my bowls, whites and shoes. Feeling slightly nervous I changed and listened to the banter not understanding much of it at all. Who’s “skipping” today, so and so “leads” and have you got any “grippo”? What do they mean I thought but just nodded and smiled as we waited outside for the Club Captain to announce the teams after welcoming the opposition. I had been told we were playing “rinks” which meant there are four players to a rink with each bowler having two bowls. I had already been given “stickers” to put on my bowls so that we knew whose were whose – more on this later!

As a novice bowler I was to play Number Two. I asked a friendly face what that meant. “You go after the “lead” and before number three!” The Club Captain welcomed our guests and then getting more nervous I heard my name – I was in Rink Five. Following the others I made my way to the allocated Rink, placed my bowls near the others and then everyone shook hands. “Good game,” they said to each other and also their names which I promptly forgot! “Don’t forget it is one on the first two ends so bowl one with your forehand and one with your back hand,” one of my team members advised me – okay, so I need to watch carefully what the “lead” bowler did. I watched the two “leads” bowl their two bowls and after each bowl the “Skip” (captain of the rink) would say “one short,” or “two past,” or signal with his arms that the strength was correct. Now it was my turn… I tried to remember all the advice I had received from two qualified coaches (Neill and James) and off went my first ever bowl in a match. It went in the right direction but then turned to the left leaving it short and to the left of the jack. “Bit more green and four,” was the response from the skip. I felt suitably embarrassed and aware there were many sets of eyes on me as I bowled my second bowl. I bowled the other way and this time it turned to the right but luckily my strength was a bit better and it stopped not too far away. There was no reaction from anybody! I followed the other three bowlers as we made their way to the other end where our bowls were, all neatly close to the jack apart from one of mine of course! The Number Threes made their way to where we had just bowled from. There is so much to take in, I thought as I looked to my left and saw a bowler bent over measuring the distance between the jack and a bowl – this is serious stuff! I stood at the back of our group (there was nowhere else to go!) and listened as our Number Three was given instructions from the Skip: “Come around this one and lay on this one,” he said. I watched and blow me down he nearly did it, but then the opposition Number Three knocked our bowl, which was the closest to the jack away. “Well bowled, that’s shot bowl,” their Skip said and I realised that “shot bowl” was the closest bowl to the jack – how I hoped that I would hear those magic words, “shot bowl” when my turn came.

The last to bowl were the two Skips and once they had bowled their two bowls we all looked at the end result. We had two bowls closest to the jack (not mine of course!). “That’s two to us then is it?” I asked. “No it is one on the first two ends!” was the reply. “Of course!” I thought! That was the end of the first end – there were twenty more to play during which time I had managed to send two of my bowls on to the next “rink” as I bowled them the wrong way round (wrong bias is the correct term) I then had the indignity and embarrassment of seeing the Skip remove my bowl from the green and place it at the back – all this as sixteen players (at least) were watching, looking at me and having a quiet (and sometimes not so quiet) laugh. Then on one end I used one of my team mates bowls so when he went to bowl he could not see his bowl and had to use mine – another embarrassment! “Don’t worry we’ve all done it before,” said a friendly voice. “Maybe,” I thought, “but not today!” In many ways the end of the game came as a relief but the friendliness and words of encouragement from all players (well most!) made me want to play again as soon as possible…

Earls Barton Trio Qualify for National Finals

L to R: Mike Griffin, Neil Gould & James Butts – national finalists For the first time since 1988 when Gerry Sharp, John Whiting, Bob Frost and Cyril Bridge won the Harris Cup and qualified for the National Bowls Finals, Neil Gould, Terry Williams and James Butts played in the National Triples Finals held at Worthing from August 18-21. They qualified by being County Finalists narrowly losing to “Express Lifts” in the County Finals held at St Crispins on Friday July 22.(See photo) “This is a fantastic achievement and a great honour for Earls Barton Bowls Club.! ‘Skip’ Neil Gould said. “The final was so close. We lost by two shots having been leading for sixteen of the eighteen ends. It was a great pleasure to play with two of our most experienced bowlers at our great club.” Neil has only been bowling for nine years and he remembers what his coach said when he first started: “You’re too old to win any of the top county matches, it’s a young mans game now!” But Neil being a competitive sportsman has proved his old coach wrong and show that bowls is a game for all ages! There has been more good news for the Club as for only the second time in the history of the “Northamptonshire Executive Triples” two teams from the same club fought out a really close match in the County Final.

Yes you’ve guessed it was Earls Barton vs. Earls Barton!! Yes that is correct the Club fielded the two finalists who produced a fantastic match with a very close finish. The victors were James Butts, Mike Griffin and Neil Gould and the runners up Dave Wrigley, Richard Paintin and Alan Jeyes. This season which is now coming to a close has been one of the most successful in many a year and has brought back some wonderful memories for many of our elder statesmen. At the time of writing we currently top the Monday night Triples League which, fingers crossed, will add to the Trophy Cabinet. Blow Your Mind… Julie writes: The Earls Barton Christian Book Club has been meeting each month for quite a while now and is proving to be very popular. The most recent meeting took place on Tuesday August 9. The club is open to everyone and its membership is drawn from a range of churches from within the village as well as from outside Earls Barton. We make use of the extensive library of Christian books held at All Saints Church and there are also many more books available which have been donated by its members. We meet on different nights of the week to ensure that there is no clash with other events such as night school, other clubs or the Alpha course running across the valley, so you won’t miss out. Everyone chooses one or two books each session, they go off and read them and then at the following meeting each book is briefly described and/or either recommended or not as everyone’s tastes are not the same. At present, meetings take place at Glenys’ house but if numbers continue to grow we may have to seek another venue. For more information you can catch Glenys at All Saints church hall after the service on Sunday at around 11.15 – she’s with John standing by the enormous pile of books! If you can’t make that then just contact us here at Barton Today and we’ll put you in touch. There’s always room for a few more members… Meetings for the rest of the year take place on: September 19, October 17, November 15 and on December 13. Cheaper and Faster Broadband Comes To Earls Barton…At Last! At long last Earls Barton's telephone exchange has been modernised, meaning that the residents of Earls Barton can have faster and cheaper Broadband without having to go to cable. You may have noticed the BT OpenReach vans working on the green boxes at the end of your road over the past few months to upgrade the systems around our village. Earls Barton is now LLU (local loop unbundled).

What does this mean in layman terms? I hear you ask… The local exchange that serves the village has been modernised and now other broadband and telephony providers can put their equipment in the exchange and the reason it is cheaper is they now don't have to pay BT to ‘piggyback’ on their equipment. Your Member of Parliament “There’s nothing to do round here.” “There are always kids with hoodies hanging around”. Two quotes many MPs hear on their travels, but I can honestly say to you I have never heard from any of my Constituents in Earls Barton. In this edition of Barton Today there are two articles about two different types of “youth outreach”. In fact you could read them and get two completely different messages as to what is needed in this policy area.

One talks about the fantastic new “Ignite Youth Project” that managed to receive some money for a “sound studio, games machines, Apple Macs with “Garage Band” software etc. The other is written by “Charlie the Youth Worker” in which he talks about what he does and his fears for the future. I’ve seen good youth work in action that provides exactly what Charlie says is needed: “a range of planned and spontaneous learning opportunities for young people to develop the skills, values and attitudes to successfully make the transition from child to adult” and all this in a safe space where they “can hang out and have fun”. So, which is going to work better? If we live in tough times, do we need both things? Personally I believe the more provision we have the better, but I must say I don’t think the state has all the answers here and nor should the taxpayers pay for it all. Some would say we need more premises for youth activity. So, just build nice youth centres, fill them with things that entice young people in and staff them with people like Charlie - easy! Well, there is one small problem, whilst it is true that in some places youth centres attract people from miles around, in many others they fail to attract them from around the corner. OK... so we need to build them close to where young people are - we can’t expect these youngsters to walk too far to somewhere like this. I trust, by now, you can see where this is going. All of this costs a lot of money and to be quite frank, the results are hit and miss. A lot depends on the youth workers – and fortunately there are a few other Charlies out there; a lot does depend on the location, a surprising amount depends on the weather. Oh and there’s something else – you simply can’t make young people go to a youth centre . Across the country the following statement is fact: make a youth centre as nice as you like, the vast majority of your target group won’t go along. Society has changed massively in recent times and that is why I think it important that we reflect this with a mass of different provision for youth services. From the Church to the County Council, from the Football Club to local charities, from dance schools to after school clubs, there are now a whole host of people providing things for young people to do and all of them offer something special. And remember there are some other elements that play havoc with a teenagers’ time: school work, family commitments, friendships, boyfriends and girlfriends, sleep, music and just chilling. So what do I think about the provision we have locally for young people? I think we are lucky as we have a mass of it and such a lot of it is not provided by the state or paid for by the taxpayer. I just have to say that I have some experience of all this: I have teenage children, I’ve helped out in a youth club, managed services for thousands of students and rumours still persist that I was once a young person myself. I also regularly meet young people in various situations and I have to say that society does demonise the hoody; most of the lads I’ve met wearing a hoody locally are perfectly good people and not intent on causing trouble. And don’t let people scare you - a massive percentage of the youth of today are not going to riot, or rob you or torch your car;

in fact they would be as outraged about that happening as you or me if they saw it happening. Saying that these things could happen if you don’t pay for a youth club is, quite frankly, rubbish and massively underestimates the youth of Earls Barton and Northamptonshire. Finally, one issue that is always high on the agenda of young people I talk to is where and how they will find their first job. Again we are lucky around here – Daventry Parliamentary Constituency has more jobs on offer at the Job Centre Plus than there are people out of work. However, you can never be complacent and I am pleased that the Government is funding an additional 80,000 work experience places for young people, as well as funding 50,000 more apprenticeship places over the next four years, and establishing at least twenty-four new university technical colleges. The last thing anyone wants to see is a disenfranchised youth, becoming an unemployable disenfranchised adult and these measures will help to stop people going down that route. Anyone for Tennis? Clare Elsby writes...I am now convinced of the value of publicising events through radio. Despite plastering just about every telegraph pole in Earls Barton, Moulton and Wollaston, it was the Sixty Second Sell on BBC Radio Northampton during the week that encouraged the rusty players to dust off their tennis rackets and come down to Earls Barton Tennis Club on Sunday July 24 for a charity open morning, in aid of Lakelands Day Hospice in Corby.

The sun shone (perfect tennis weather) as the organisers - a tag team of Earls Barton Tennis Club and Loch Ness Marathon Runners - got to grips with the complicated rules of an “American Tournament”. After several explanations, twenty-four tennis players were introduced to their partners for the morning and play commenced. The spectators were fuelled by cups of tea, coffee, muffins and jam scones. It could have been Wimbledon save the Pimms and strawberries.

The back up team hard at work… Play stopped just in time for a choice of burgers, hot dogs, accompanied by USA ‘slaw’ and drinks from the bar. A fantastic morning and £210 raised for the Lakelands Day Hospice in Corby. Thanks go to Earls Barton Tennis Club and the Loch Ness Marathon runners. He has been Earls Barton's locksmith for nearly two years now and is often seen taking the children to and from the village school, rushing out in the early hours to rescue the odd damsel who has locked herself out or singing in The Old Swan's acoustic night 'The Circle of Fi5ths'

It was after an early performance at the very same event when, the organisers not knowing his full name at the time, listed Tony as 'The Singing Locksmith' and a nickname was coined. When a friend then suggested videoing clips for 'You Tube', nobody could have guessed just how much it would snowball...

Wilson, Kepple and…

As the interest grew with the number of clicks, the outfits became sillier, the puns got more cringe-worthy, the requests more bizarre and five videos later, he has received over seven thousand hits in the first month. A (rather dubious) star was born. Tony now has a list of over a hundred characters and songs to work through on his waiting list.

With the kind help of 'Blackadder Costumes' the village’s Costume Hire Shop, 'The Singing Locksmith' has become a You Tube sensation with his fans eagerly awaiting the next upload. It may not be beneficial to your health… Despite his new-found fame (if not fortune) Tony continues in his role as our humble village locksmith. He admits that whilst he often receives requests to sing while he's working, and is more than happy to combine the two things he loves the most, he promises to stay away from the X-Factor, at least for now. And for the record, it worked. Business is good and the village is smiling…

How NOT To Walk Your Dog

Expert Dog Advice from Graeme Hall, “The Dogfather” You’d be forgiven for thinking that walking the dog was easy, but with some dogs, that’s not always the case. Whether your dog is over excited, nervous, pulls or is even aggressive, there’s lots you can do that will make a big difference. ! !

Here are five ‘starters for ten’ for a happy dog walking experience: 1). Your mindset is all important. YOU are going for a nice walk. Out of the goodness of your heart, you’re taking Fido with you. It’s not HIS walk, it’s YOURS. You decide where to go, at what speed, and when you want to stop. The dog doesn’t get to dictate it to you by pulling or dragging etc. You control the walk. OK? 2). Don’t stop at every lamppost. Dogs often want to stop and sniff, of course, but: Did you decide to stop, or did your dog? If it’s your dog, then see 1) above! He can wait until you find a suitable place. If he thinks he can stop you at will, then who is controlling the walk? If he controls your walk, can you really blame him for pulling you around? 3). A walk in the park should not look like a walk in the park . Instead, you should walk with a purpose: Walk at your own speed, but with head up and as though you know exactly where you are going. Even when you don’t. Would you follow someone who looks aimless? If you want them to follow your lead, first you must LOOK like a leader... 4). You don't have to stop and let your dog say hello to every dog. You don’t stop and talk to every person you meet, do you? If you decide to walk past, then walk past. If you want to stop and chat, stop. It’s your call. Remember: You’re in charge! 5). Don’t spend a fortune on a different dog training collar or dog lead. It’s quite common for people to get through £100 worth of dog collars and dog leads to no avail before they called me in. I use very simple equipment for 90% of my dog training. It’s HOW you use it that counts. I can show you. (Or ask anyone who comes to my dog classes and puppy classes in Earls Barton Youth Club). If you’re having problems with your dog walking and it’s not a pleasure anymore, don’t despair. There’s help at hand. With the right techniques and a little understanding, you can be walking along with a slack lead and a happy dog in no time!

Nina writes: Well we did it and we didn’t get too wet! A huge thank you to all the village that came out and supported the local carnival on what was a bit of a wet, soggy day - even though the sun did turn up in the end! Well done to the Carnival Queen Sophia, and her princesses Hannah and Shawnee. The procession, although a slightly soggy one, was full of colour-from Alice in Wonderland, Jambalaya, Countries of the World, Wizard of Oz, Bumblebees, Cheerleaders and a Chinese Dragon! Can I also take this opportunity to thank all the Marshalls, leaflet distributors, Helpers on the Rec. and committee members-Sam and Maria. A big thank you also, to Kerry from Delicuts for offering her services in putting the carnival queen’s and princesses’ hair up. They all looked beautiful, and they had a lovely day. What with the weather not being great and a late cancellation on an arena act we are, at this moment, adding our takings up and it looks like we will just break even for the day. It still amazes me the prices of acts and bands etc. and what amazes me more is that people think they come for nothing and wonder what the money goes on!

And Now For Our WHOPPER… The Earls Barton Diamond Jubilee Carnival Saturday June 16 in 2012 Next year we are hoping for a whopper of a carnival to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. We are hoping to do some fund raising in the year to help pay for more acts and have applied for a grant from the council so that we can have a carnival to remember! BUT remember we still NEED YOU! Elaine and Gary write: How lovely to have Barton Today back in print. Now for a Pup-date… Sandy left us on April 5. Unfortunately she was withdrawn from the Puppy walking scheme due to a "quirky walk", but she is now in her forever home, living in Stamford. She is quite a celebrity wherever she goes, everyone wants to fuss her and hear all about her. She is adored by her new owners, who keep in touch with us and send us beautiful photos, so although we were saddened she couldn't go on to be a guide dog, we are happy for her.

Now on to Pepsi.... we had such a long wait for her, and she finally came to us on May 12 at eight weeks old. She is a black three-quarter Labrador, one quarter Golden Retriever, and what a lively bundle she was. She instantly made herself at home, not at all bothered by our Springer, Sky. Pepsi found it hard to settle down at nights (why do we always get the early risers?). Gary was staying up until 1.00 am, and I was crawling out of bed at 5.00 am. Phew, it was tiring for awhile, but now she settles down by 11:30 pm, and sometimes I'm getting up as late as 6.00 am! A real lie-in… Some of you will have met her at the Carnival, though she was still being carried then. Did you notice how long our arms were getting - she was very heavy! Pepsi weighed 5.75 kg when she arrived, but now weighs 12.5kg, and is a very tall 17.5 inches. She is all legs, and on her first free run she looked like Bambi. Pepsi seems to take most things in her stride, noises don't bother her, and she is very calm. We were in Tesco and a balloon burst with a huge bang. Gary had to be scraped off the ceiling so to speak, but Pepsi just glanced behind her as if to say: "Oh, what was that?" with no worries at all. She loves digging holes, and enjoys helping Gary in the garden, it's just a shame that she doesn't take off the dead flowers heads!

We took her to visit the Junior school, and she was very well behaved. She is also a very good girl at the Guide dog puppy class, we're used to having the class clown to walk around, but so far Pepsi is doing all that we ask of her. We've also taken her to Wellingborough and Northampton Railway Stations. Pepsi is a very clever pup with a good memory. She already knows some of the routes we take, and leads us quite well, and is not often distracted. If you see us in the village, you are always welcome to come and talk to us. We can tell you all about puppy- walking, which is a lovely thing to do, and Guide Dogs are looking out for more Puppy Walkers.

The Box in the Corner Will Never Be The Same Again…

When the TV Starts Talking Back To You It’s nearly nine o’clock on a weekday evening and Sue is watching TV. Suddenly, a small blue “S” begins pulsating in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Sue freezes the programme – she’ll come back to it later as it will be held on the PVR – and she presses the OK button on her TV remote control. The screen goes blue, a message appears: LOADING. And then an image of her daughter and grandchildren appears on the screen. Her daughter is “Skyping” her from three thousand miles away in Seattle, Washington and Sue can see and hear her family in moving colour, absolutely free of charge. No this is not Science Fiction, it’s Earls Barton 2011. Welcome to the world of Internet Enabled Television! Although many TV suppliers are selling 3D TV as “the next big thing in television” forget it. Who needs to view through goggles a picture which will give you a headache in half an hour? Particularly when Japanese manufacturing company Toshiba has already demonstrated a 3D TV without needing glasses in their laboratories? Your future TV watching will be via the internet. So you need to be careful about the kind of TV set you are buying now… Video calls have actually been with us for some while. Barton Today published an article about making Skype calls around the world in its second issue way back in 2006, but these were free videophone calls from computer to computer. Now you can call from the TV set in your own lounge. All you need is an enabled TV, a camera and a connector to the internet. Difficult? No. Reputable TV manufacturers such as Sony and Panasonic have been quietly producing this kind of TV for a few years now. They come with two USB ports on the side. Into one you insert your camera and into the other, either a connector to your home computer, or a “Wi Fi dongle” that links wirelessly to your router. Newer models this year will have the connections already installed. Skype is a free service to which anyone can subscribe. Once you have registered with them you can call any PC or IETV which is also owned by a Skype subscriber. As well as making free videophone calls, an IETV has other benefits. Although you cannot yet use it to go to all websites on the internet, most IETVs have a number of websites which are accessible. You can go to You Tube, get the weather, pick up sport information and most importantly, download movies. Panasonic has agreed a deal with Ace Trax, a company which will hire or sell you a movie from their wide selection. You pay for it via your TV and can watch it immediately. No waiting. No having to go out to the video shop. If there’s nothing on all fifty channels on Freeview or all 150 channels on Freesat, then you can download a film and watch that. You can either rent and then watch it once, or you can buy it and it will be yours to watch whenever you wish. So no more DVD boxes cluttering up the shelves, your film is held on the internet for you to watch at any time. Who needs to pay for a movie channel? No wonder some satellite companies are getting nervous…

“Edna Makes the Show” Local Thesp Stars in

Hairspray the Musical! In May 2011 Upper Brown Street Theatre in Leicester presented the musical Hairspray and Gary L Johnson from Earls Barton Methodist Church (and Barton Today’s own Live Arts Correspondent) took on the iconic role of Mrs Edna Turnblad. The musical is set in Baltimore in the 1960s and tells the story of young Tracy Turnblad (Edna’s daughter) and her rise to fame - even if she is a big girl. The story sees the people of Baltimore learning to accept everyone no matter how big or small they may be, what colour they are or how they act.

At the beginning of the show we see Edna in her small Baltimore home at work, cleaning clothes for money. She has never had the guts to leave her house until Tracy persuades her to go with her for a make-over. In the show itself the make-over happens in ten seconds. That’s a full costume change from dressing grown and nightdress and wig, to a full dress, heels and new wig. As the show progresses, Edna’s confidence builds to help Tracy with her battle to get everyone to be treated the same. At the end of the show Edna shows her full support as she crashes TV and sings and dances to the national. Gary has now shared the role of Edna with major stars such as Michael Bull and Brain Conley. After the performances the show had a number of great reviews including some very kind things about our very own Local Star. Gary said “I would like to thank everyone involved with the show. It was amazing playing such an iconic role and being able to sing and act this fanatic character.” Before every performance Gary was transformed into Edna. “I had to come into the theatre two hours early so the make-up artists could work their magic. The heels did take some time to get used to. Walking was fine but then I had to learn to dance in them. It was strange creating a character like this. You had to be able to develop a voice for the person, a woman of course, and then you had to learn songs, and then re-learn them in the “Edna” character voice. But I loved every moment.” Hairspray was the latest musical for Gary to star in and he hopes to build from this show’s experiences into other roles and parts. The Northampton Dragon Boat Race

“Heave Ho! Me Hearties!”

Local man, Steve Dodds, has just taken part in this year’s Dragon Boat Race. Organised by the Northampton Rotary Club, this year’s event was held on Sunday July 17 and was in aid of the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. Steve was part of the Horts Estate Agents crew. Dressed as pirates, ‘Horts Ahoy’ were entering the event for the first time this year. As many of you know, Steve, works as a ‘home based’ estate agent under Horts banner and services the villages of Earls Barton, Mears Ashby, Ecton and Wilby. Held annually at Midsummer Meadow, just along the Bedford Road opposite Wollaston BMW, thirty six teams compete along a 250m stretch of the River Nene. The boats are supplied and everyone benefits from the knowledge and skills of an experienced helmsman. Heats are held from around 10.00 am in the morning and all teams compete in three races against varying opposition. After these have taken place, points are added up and the top six teams race in two semi finals and then the grand finale. Horts Ahoy managed a respectable 8th place although they did manage to snare the most important prize of the day, the best fancy dress! The weather was a little unpredictable with some strong gusts and showers but in typical British fashion things went ahead unhindered. With live music, fairground rides, food stalls and a beer tent, it was a great family day out. The teams all set up gazebos along the grass bank overlooking the racing and invited friends and family to cheer them on. Everyone was rewarded with some burnt barbeque food and a warm beer. The Northampton Rotary Club raised in the order of £36,000, with the ten Property Consultants from Horts managing a respectable £1200. Horts Estate Agents enjoys participating in various charity events throughout the year and will certainly be adding this one to their list. (Yes, a definite nautical/pirate flavour to this issue… It’s almost as if Colin were still around…-Ed)

Can You Help - Please? Julia writes: Dear B2Day Are you interested in history and the preservation of ancient monuments? If you are, would you consider helping to maintain our own Saxon Tower and church? The Tower has stood on top of its hill, overlooking the village, for over one thousand years, cared for and maintained by successive generations of villagers. It is the most complete example of a late Saxon church tower in the country and is Grade 1 listed The church also has important architectural features, including the Twelfth Century Norman doorway and the arcading in the chancel. We, in our turn must now ensure that this historic building does not deteriorate. The last major work to the Tower itself was in 1990, but last year’s repairs to the church roof and to the soft ironstone of the church resulted in a bill for over £30,000. The expertise needed to do such work is very expensive. The Friends of All Saints is a charity (No. 1118769), set up to promote interest in and provide information about the Tower and church, as well as to raise funds for their upkeep. The monies raised by the Friends will be used solely for the maintenance and enhancement of the building. The Trustees are drawn from members of the church and of the wider community and it is they who will decide how the funds are to be spent. We hope that, through the Friends, more people will be encouraged to visit the church, which will benefit not only the church, but also local businesses. So, please, do consider our invitation to become a member of Friends, in order to help preserve this historic village icon for future generations. the new 'Barton Today' will be a non-profit making venture. Just

a quick query that's been on many people’s mind (I've been

stopped in the street on quite a few occasions by readers of

Barton Today). Does anyone draw a wage/receive payment for

taking part in this enterprise? Kirsty Austin (No. Not a single person receives a penny. We are all volunteers. Check out the article by Clare Elsby about Community Interest Companies on Page 21 which explains what we are and what we do.
