Located in the Hall, an impressive 18th Century building

in the centre of the medieval city of Salisbury, the Babylon

School of Languages is a privately run school which

takes great pride in providing a personal service to all

its students. We offer courses in General English (from

beginner level up to advanced), preparation for Cambridge

ESOL and IELTS examinations, Business English and a wide

selection of Professional English courses.

The School holds British Council accreditation and so

can sponsor students from outside the European Union

for Student and Extended Student visas. The Hall is a

registered Cambridge and Trinity computer-based test

centre and the 16-bay blended learning suite can be used

by all students to supplement their classroom lessons.

Salisbury is perfectly situated to explore the tourist

attractions of Southern England including London, Bath,

Oxford, Windsor and Portsmouth, and we can offer a

stimulating and varied weekend programme of excursions.

Babylon has a large number of friendly English homestay

accommodation providers, who mainly live within easy

travel distance of the school.

This brochure can only give you an overview of what

Babylon has to offer. For further information (and an up to

date list of prices) please refer to our website

Our School

The main Babylon school building is The Hall,

which is a large and elegant 18th century

townhouse located just a two-minute walk

from the busy city centre. Facilities include

seven classrooms, two large student common

rooms, a 16-terminal e-learning centre (which

doubles as our Business English suite), and a

spacious reception hall with, in winter months,

an atmospheric log fire.

Most of our classrooms are equipped with

modern interactive audiovisual facilities which

sit on a high speed network; wi-fi is available

throughout the building. And the student

common room is a perfect place for students to

relax with help-yourself coffee and tea available

throughout the day.

The Hall is a Cambridge English Assessments

and Trinity College London computer based test

centre and has a “state of the art” e-learning suite,

where students are encouraged to accelerate

their learning of English by engaging in self-

study. Students also have regular progress tests

and tutorials with their teachers and advice on

effective self-study strategies.

A quintessentially English City with a wealth of history and culture

Salisbury

Known as the ‘city in the countryside’, the

medieval City of Salisbury is surrounded by a

landscape so lovely it’s almost too good to be

true. If you pause on the edge of the water-

meadows to take in the awesome sight of the

Cathedral rising from these lush green fields, it’s

easy to understand why Salisbury was named by

Lonely Planet as one of the world’s Top 10 Cities

to visit in 2015.

With its timbered buildings, an early English

Gothic Cathedral (home to the world famous

Magna Carta

Libertatum), a

thriving weekly

market, a

buzzing art

scene, museums

and some of

England’s finest

historic houses,

there are many

things for you

waiting to

be explored.

In the evenings there is no shortage of

entertainment, with a choice of great restaurants,

characterful city pubs, theatre, cinema, arts centre,

and the Chapel nightclub all centrally located.

Salisbury

Salisbury is ideally located to visit the many

tourist attractions in the South of England.

The world heritage site of Stonehenge is just 10

miles North of the city; the Georgian city of Bath

with its Roman baths (another world heritage

site) is an easy one hour’s drive away as are

the beaches of Bournemouth and the historic

dockyards of Portsmouth; Oxford, Windsor

and Bristol are just 1½ hours away by bus and

London itself the same time by train.

Nearer to Salisbury you can explore the lovely

Wiltshire countryside and picturesque villages

and the many stately homes nearby (including

Longleat, Wilton House and Stourhead).

Babylon is able to organise full day and half day

excursions to these places and to many more with

buses or cars from our local transport provider.

General English Courses

The foundation for all our courses are our

General English classes, which are programmed

for three hours every morning (9am to 12:30pm).

Minimum age for these courses is 16. Courses

are offered at every level from Elementary up

to Advanced and aim to develop students’

abilities in speaking, listening, reading and

writing. General English courses are suitable for

students wanting to prepare for KET, PET or FCE

examinations and can be taken as a 15-hour

option (ie mornings only) or as a 25-hour option

with additional hours to improve your language

skills in afternoon conversation and skills based

classes. All students have a monthly progress

test and tutorial, which means that you will

always be aware of how you are doing. Students

are expected to undertake 4 ½ hours of self-study

per week.

Class sizes for open groups are a maximum of

15 students. Students can expect to progress

between levels in 8-12 weeks on the intensive

course.

Our General English course also provides

the foundation for our Academic English,

Business English, Professional English and Exam

Preparation classes, which are programmed in the

afternoon from 1:30pm to 3:30pm.

To suit everyone

Academic English Classes

Our Academic Course is used to prepare students for

CAE and IELTS examinations.

Students must test at a minimum of English level B1

to begin this course.

Students join the relevant level General English classes

in the mornings and then have afternoon lessons in

Academic English. The afternoon course will help

you to build upon and consolidate your existing

knowledge using material developed in an academic

context and covering all four language skills.

In addition you will be taught practical exam

techniques and practise on past papers with ongoing

constructive feedback on your performance and

abilities regularly supplied by your teacher. You will

sit a mock exam at the end of your course prior to

taking the formal exam.

The course will maximise your chances of exam

success and equip you with a full set of transferable

study skills including critical thinking, effective

reading, academic writing, engaging with theory &

Accommodation

We can offer a range of accommodation

options for your stay in Salisbury although we

do encourage all our students to stay with a

host family if possible as this will allow them to

experience at first

hand the British way

of life and to enhance

their language

learning in a relaxed

family setting. Your

accommodation will

consist of a single

or twin room with

shared bathroom

facilities and your

host family will

provide you with breakfast and dinner; the full

board option includes a packed lunch. Mealtimes

give you the opportunity to engage in general

conversation and to develop your English

language skills. Most homestays have wi-fi.

Salisbury is not a large city and our homestays are

within 30 minutes travel distance of the school;

many are much closer than this.

Homestay Plus is available for those who

prefer to stay in a single en-suite room.

As an alternative to homestay, we would be

happy to arrange hotel accommodation or a

self-service apartment for you or, subject to

availability, a room in our student residence in

the grounds of the cathedral.
