    Teaching is a practice that involves passing of knowledgeto people considered ignorant in the field of study that isbeing taught. A teacher can be a person of any age

    provided that the person is well versed in a particularsphere. Nevertheless, the possession of knowledge doesnot always mean that a person can be considered a goodteacher. In this paper we will clearly display the qualities ofa competent teacher.It is generally believed that teachers are easily found butgetting a good teacher can be very rare and difficult. Most

    of the school management knows what a difficult task it isto hire a skillful teacher. roficient teachers can beidentified by the set of qualities that they possess. !irstly,a teacher has to be knowledgeable in the area that he"sheis teaching. This does not mean that a person has to bean e#pert, but the most essential skills will be apt ingetting the point across to be perceived by the audience.

    This comes from the principle that people cannot teachwhat they do not know. Additionally, a teacher requires thecharacteristic of being patient. The students that are to betaught have different levels of knowledge and if a teacheris not patient, a lot of misunderstandings may arise, thus

    portraying the teacher$s flaws.Moreover, teachers must show a good command ofconfidence. This does not mean that they should not admit

    when they are wrong. %onfidence enables the student tolearn in a more comfortable environment. &esides,qualified teachers are able to portray mentorship. Theyshould be able to develop positive attributes in theirstudents. !or mentorship to flourish, maturity has to be

    shown. 'ood teachers need to show responsibilityhowever young they are. This will enable them to perceiveemotional fluctuations among students, thus becoming

    able to know what teaching methods to use to achieve theset goals. A good sense of humor of teachers helpsrelieve the tension between them and students. Thiswould in turn facilitate a free flow of information.!urthermore, teachers are required to have good

    presentation skills. Teacher$s skills will help students toperceive information visually and auditorily, hence makingsure that their knowledge remains in the long(term

    memory for a longer period of time.Teachers are supposed to be respectful. )espect hasbeen termed as a two(way traffic. If a teacher shows ahigh degree of maturity and respect, then the students areable to emulate this, thus fostering understanding of eachother$s limits. This respect comes along with empathy thatenables teachers to react to student$s feelings. This would

    create a closely(knit community, therefore fosteringlearning process. A teacher must be a good planner. Thearrangement of schedules and keeping to them allowsteachers to give students e#tra time to conceptuali*eideas if it is needed. !ollowing the syllabus is not the

    planning that is required. It goes beyond this with theteacher keeping in mind the requirements of the

    programme. 'ood teachers are always enthusiastic.+espite the administrative drawbacks that might workagainst them, teachers have the interest of students atheart consequently they should never lose theenthusiasm of teaching. )ecently, the world has seengrowth of technology. In today$s age of computers, a good

    teacher will be required to possess obligatory computerskills. This is because oweroint presentations andsome word processing documents would be needed in

    teaching to make it easier.In conclusion, a good teacher should have all the above(mentioned qualities. These are not only qualities of ane#cellent teacher, but the basic indicators that a person isan e#pert.
