MESSAGE FROM THE HELM
Mission of the Downtown Sailing Center
The Downtown Sailing Center provides quality education and life-enriching programs that promote
self-esteem and teamwork through the joy of sailing. The Downtown Sailing Center is committed
to promoting an environment of inclusiveness and accessibility, especially to youth, persons with
disabilities, and those with limited opportunity.
2012 brought many new challenges to the
Downtown Sailing Center, bringing our
community of staff, members and volunteers
even closer together. Through the guidance
of our Strategic Plan, we overcame these
challenges, while also receiving prestigious
recognition. The 2012 Strategic Plan, focused on
standardizing quality programming throughout
all of our activities – education, outreach,
membership, community, and volunteerism.
With our programming at the
heart of all that we do, we
were able to bring together all
aspects of our community and
secure our foundation for many
years to come.
In 2012 the DSC was recognized
regionally and nationally as
a leader in educational and
community-based programs.
We successfully expanded
our programming for youth
and accessible individuals,
while offering higher
quality programs, with better instruction
and a standardized curriculum. Some of our
programming highlights, include:
• Named the 2012 US Sailing Community
Program of the Year;
• Named the 2012 Accessible Community
Program of the Year-Baltimore County
Commission on Disabilities; and
• Developed new STEM (science, technology,
engineering and math) and Learn to Read
curricula.
Our volunteers are the key to reaching so many
individuals in the greater Baltimore community
especially those with disabilities or those with
limited opportunity. In 2012, our dedicated
volunteers gave a total of 2,099 volunteer
hours, valued at $47,836. (Source: Independent
Sector).
Of course, we wouldn’t be able to accomplish
our goals without our community business
partners who donate dollars and
significant in-kind resources. The
coming together of volunteers
and business partners, who are
dedicated to our mission, is truly
our biggest asset. Thus, allowing
the DSC to continue to be a
long-term, valuable asset to the
Baltimore community.
The following report highlights
the hard work of staff, members,
and volunteers at the Downtown
Sailing Center in 2012. We hope
that this offers some insight to our
diverse community. As we continue to be a
cornerstone in the Baltimore region and leaders
in offering quality, life-enriching programming.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Lester, President
Lynn Handy, Executive Director
VISION: To be a world class
community sailing
center that enriches
the lives of the
individuals
we serve.
PROGRAMS
ACCESSIBLE SAILING
There are many reasons why we are so proud of our Accessible Sailing program. First and foremost, is the self-confidence, sense of ability and pure joy our programming provides individuals with disabilities. Imagine the sense of independence and pride sailing a boat by one’s self out on the open water gives to people who often feel so dependent on others!Secondly, the majority of the program is run by incredibly generous member and non-member DSC volunteers. Twice a month during the spring and summer, qualified DSC volunteers teach, coach and accompany (if needed or desired) individuals with disabilities to sail using our small, colorful and non-capsize-able Access dinghies.
Thirdly, the DSC is able to provide the Access-Ability Saturday sailing days absolutely free to participants. And, we offer our more specialized sailing days for low income groups at a significantly discounted rate due to the generosity of our many volunteers and donors. Finally, in line with our goal of enhancing the educational aspect of our programs, both through sailing Saturdays and our one-day group sails, we provided more training and more racing opportunities for our accessible participants than ever before.
Accessible Sailing Highlights:
• Accessible Sailing became so popular that we actually had waiting lists this summer for the first time ever.
• We welcomed a new partner this year, the National Federation for the Blind, introducing many new individuals to the many benefits and life-lessons of sailing.
• We logged 32 accessible sailing events, staffed by 132 volunteers totaling 528 volunteer hours through this program, representing more volunteers and more volunteer hours than ever before.
• A total of 330 unique individuals were served through all of our Accessible programs in 2012. Since many of these individuals spent multiple days on the water, individuals with disabilities spent a total of 761 days on the water in 2012.
In 2012, the Downtown Sailing Center’s
overarching goal for all of its programs was
to enhance its educational emphasis focusing
on the following three components: building
sailing skills; exploring the local waterfront;
and, building leadership and teambuilding skills
through friendly competition. We made great
strides on all three fronts.
In 2012, we served over 2,027 unique
individuals across all of our programs, with
many individuals participating in more than one
program. These individuals represented ages
from 7 to 80 and all socio-economical levels.
Each of our programs is described below
including how we moved forward with our
enhanced educational emphasis, as well as
some 2012 highlights.
Accessible Sailing Clients:
The DSC collaborates with a host of other organizations to bring our enriching accessible programs to as many individuals as possible. In 2012, we were pleased to partner with:

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Outreach programs demonstrate the DSC’s commitment to ensure that all people, regardless of economic status, race, ability, opportunity, or any other attribute have full access to the water. We partner with a wide array of organizations serving at-risk youth in Baltimore City to provide educational, sailing and life-skills lessons on the water. Participants learn about the environment, team-building and, paradoxically, self-reliance all while building their self-esteem.
The Sailor Instructor Training (S.I.T.) program is the DSC’s flagship youth outreach program. The program is a summer-long paid internship available to at-risk city high school students. In addition to learning how to swim, sail and teach sailing, participants also take US Sailing’s Powerboating class. This certificate allows
them to operate any powerboat in Maryland waters. Second year SITs returned to begin as assistants in our outreach programs. Two of the returning instructors were featured in an article in the Baltimore Sun. Those SITs also received further instruction towards gaining their US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification. More importantly, the S.I.T. participants are learning leadership skills, respect, patience, teamwork and are building their self-confidence all summer long.
Outreach Highlights:
• 2012 marked the launch of two brand new educational initiatives. We partnered with the Ingenuity Project to bring our S.T.E.M. (science, math, engineering and technology) initiative to 110 Baltimore City Public School System students. The DSC used the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) established curriculum and lesson plan with the goal of introducing wind as a renewable energy source. The students successfully made data collection charts and designed and built their own wind anemometers measuring the wind in various locations around the harbor and learning how wind and sails power the boats.
PROGRAMS (continued)
• The second new educational program we launched this year was the Learn to Read initiative. We partnered with the Baltimore Museum of Industry and with Parks and People’s Superkids Camp to provide this experiential reading program to 240 at-risk, Baltimore City youth. The students were assigned a role and a story regarding a maritime theme and then completed an associated activity. They then went out on the water to portray their roles. At the end, they wrote a letter to describe their experience and labeled a postcard identifying the names of the various parts of a boat and completed a sailing rhyme.
• In partnership with the Bridges program, S.I.T. participants sailed in Annapolis and visited the amazing National Sailing Center & Hall of Fame, a comprehensive sailing center for sailing with a state-of-the-art experiential museum.
• A total of 621 people were served through all of our Community Outreach programs this summer, representing a total of 640 days on the water.

YOUTH PROGRAMS
The DSC’s Youth Programs serve children 8 – 16 years of age. We offer spring, summer and fall camps where participants are taught to sail on Access dinghies or keelboats, along with plenty of learning
activities related to sailing, such as knot-tying and navigational skills.
Youth Highlights:
• In 2012 we introduced a new course, the Junior Instructor Training Program, with huge success – the program was completely filled; 100% of the students who took the course passed the powerboat test; and three participants expressed their desire to return to be assistants in our Outreach program next summer.
• We incorporated STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) educational programming into all youth activities. A total of 128 people were served through all of our Youth programs this summer.
ADULT / MEMBER PROGRAMS
The DSC hosts a variety of educational and recreational programs to bring members together to sail and create community. One of the truly unique and exciting aspects of the DSC is the variety of people who come together to work and play side-by-side, where individuals of all ages, genders, races, cultures, economic status, and religion come together in community, at the DSC.
The DSC community is truly committed to all of our programs. In fact, the DSC boasts over 150 members who volunteer for everything from our recreational sailing programs, DSC Open Houses and work parties focused on maintaining our fleet —whatever it takes, our members are there to help.
Adult Highlights:
• Racing: Our ‘Thursday Night Racing’ program included five Race Series, each comprised of five racing nights. Twenty-five racing skippers participated, with 13 boats on the starting line each week. Our racing teams were integral to our highly successful Sail for Kids and Ya’ Gotta Regatta events.
• Cruising: We hosted eight full-moon cruises and five overnight cruises. In addition to selling four cruising boats last year, we were gifted two new vessels to add to our fleet. We trained 18 members through our reinvigorated ‘Cruising Skipper Development’ course.
• Recreational Sailing: Had over 35 open sails throughout the season.
• Sailing Lessons: 35 sailing lessons were provided, with 181 individuals receiving certifications.
• Adult Education: We diversified our educational offerings to include 3-hour ‘Intro to Sailing’ courses, introducing sailing to over 200 participants. We offered more private lessons, more specialized clinics, and more skipper development opportunities than in 2011. We served 381 individuals in our various adult and member programs in FY 2012.
CORPORATE OUTINGS AND TEAM EVENTS
In serving the business community, the DSC provides unique and powerful retreat experiences for
corporations and organizations. We get employees out of the office and into the fresh air to participate in individualized skill and team-building experiences. Working with each client, we help them determine clear objectives for their outing and then custom-design the retreat experiences and activities based on those goals.
Corporate Outings Highlights:
• We developed a new curriculum, offering tailored team building to each business, addressing their particular team building needs.
• We tripled the number of corporate outings. • Our evaluations were always excellent. One client
remarked, “I am going to use the communication skills we gained at the DSC to increase our productivity from this point on.”
SAIL FOR KIDS EVENT
The 4th Annual Sail for Kids Regatta and Fundraiser, a two day racing event with a post-race party, raised $28,137 for our youth and community outreach programs. As usual, it was a fun race in Baltimore’s harbor with dinghies, day sailing keelboats and cruising boats. Trophies and prizes were awarded for best in each division, and the most money raised in each division. This event would not have been possible without our generous sponsors, 32 team captains and hundreds of volunteers—many thanks to all of you!
YA’ GOTTA REGATTA EVENT
In 2012, the DSC hosted its largest and most successful Ya’ Gotta Regatta in organizational history. We had over 60 participants sailing in four races with over 50 volunteers. We had numerous returning outreach partners participate and had our first-ever heat of blind sailors! The event raised $21,000 to help offset the cost of our accessible program.
