The Native Turtle by Snake Blocker The turtle has always been an important symbol to the Native Americans. The turtle is both a water and land animal and it represents strength (protection), fertility, truth, perseverance (long life) and balance. It has been regarded as mythical, symbolical and sacred. It has survived since the time of creation. Legend says the original turtles pictured on their back the patterns consisting of the 13 moons, which portrayed the truth of a single cycle of the Earth’s revolution around the sun. There were also 28 markings on the back which portray the woman’s body and the cycle of the moon. The hard shell symbolizes the actual happenings of the body and is also there to remind mankind of God’s plan and laws. The Native Americans used its shell for music during sacred ceremonies and its drawings are depicted on weapons, everyday household goods and other artifacts. One legend speaks of the Great Grandmother Turtle being present when God gave man the 7 Sacred Laws. She was present to make sure that the laws would not be forgotten or vanish. Another legend tells of the Earth being created from the shell of the Great Turtle. The shell was strong enough to survive difficult situations and tough enough to bare the burdens of mankind. The Apaches identified the turtle as symbolic of a person’s spirit. The turtle is steady, patient, strong, non-dramatic, defensive and consistent. You will see and hear about the turtle expressed in Native American legends, oral stories, songs and dances. You will see it portrayed in Native American art, pottery, rocks and basketry. Be like the turtle!

Patriot Salute Timothy Spaulding is a true patriot. Mr. Spaulding has donated hundreds of book to troops in the war zone including the Military Close Quarters Combat program. Here is a list of some of the things Timothy has done in preparing books for our troops:

1) He spends hours researching books, DVDs, etcetera, educating himself on who’s who from Amazon books to E-bay to You-Tube. This is time he’ll never get back.

2) He gets called at 0015 in the morning for a loaded coal train at his away-from-home terminal, where he gets in at 1330 and tries to sleep. He rinses up and repeats this work routine. He is on-call 24/7 minus “legal rest.”

3) He trades his labor for books, shipping, and a truckload of pricey tape. This is money that will never enter his 401K, and never gains interests, therefore his efforts for the troops continue to cost him and take away from his retirement savings. And more labor is traded for replacement cash.

4) He goes to a nearby 24 hour Wallmart between midnight and 2 a.m. to scrounge for the stiff boards he uses to turn paperbacks into hardbacks so the books he donates can last.

5) He then packs the supplies back and forth while working and begins putting it all together or he goes to a local McDonalds and sits there for 4-8 hours taping stacks of books utilizing table space and buying endless Coke, coffee and grub. He gets lots of stares, to say the least. He refuses to calculate how much time it takes for one book, but it’s far more time consuming than it would seem. He thinks his work advertises that the book was sent with a purpose and it’s his way of showing the troops that people care about them stateside.

6) He has to catalogue, pack, go to the post office, and fill out all the custom’s forms need. Many times this is done 5 minutes before closing when these books make it in the door.

7) Timothy takes this off his taxes but his time and effort gets no return. 8) The books he sends do not represent 25 cent garage sale finds that would have been

thrown away, they represent hours of irreplaceable time and financial sacrifice. To date, Mr. Spaulding has personally mailed off over 1500 books to Iraq and Afghanistan spending about $6,000 per year.

9) He also writes reviews on the books at amazon.com. God bless this true American Patriot and thank him for his support to the troops. “Thank you” to those that supported our troops and the MCQC program. Respect by Snake Blocker One thing that is getting out of hand in the martial arts community (which includes Muay Thai, Boxing, MMA and traditional fighting arts) is the verbal fighting that happens among each other. Most of this fighting comes from new students that are ignorant of what they are talking about but some comes from veterans in the community. When I first started martial arts as a child I was taught first and foremost about respect. You should respect your teachers regardless of your agreement with everything they say or do. I have over 20 instructors that I have trained with over my 20 plus years in the community. I don’t agree with everything they do or say but I will never bad mouth them. I will never gossip about them and I will never post lies or negative comments about them. This is true even if I no longer train with them. I will also never waste my time posting blogs or comments that are negative about this UFC fighter or that Boxer or that Knife Instructor. If I don’t like how they teach or how they fight at that time then I just won’t train with them or watch them fight. If everyone used their time to exercise & train instead of gossiping then they would become better fighters or instructors. When all these worthless opinions are posted via the internet it turns off a lot of potential students and sets up a bad example to the next generation of students (our children). What every happened to “yes sir,” “no sir?” Whatever happened to bowing in before entering the ring or mat? What happened to wearing uniforms and looking sharp? What happened to no cursing/cussing in the training center? What happened to the “family unit” within the martial arts community? It’s sickening to hear students fight among themselves or studios bad mouthing each other. It’s sad to hear about instructors teaching current gang members and criminal rather than kicking them out of their studio. Instructors don’t need to reward bad behavior just to make a buck on a new student. I’ve kicked out several students for bad behavior. A martial arts studio is a place of RESPECT and those that can’t be respectful should not be allowed in this community of law-abiding citizens. Martial Arts should be a community of family that looks after each other. It is a community of discipline, not just for the body but for the soul. I challenge every instructor to purify their studio by kicking out all the ‘bad apples.’ Let’s get our community back on track and stop the negativity!

Reality Check Stories on Real World Assaults: Subway attacker gets 4-10 years PA Philadelphia – A man with schizophrenia who attacked a sleeping subway rider with a hammer was sentenced to four to ten years in prison for the attack, which a prosecutor dubbed “everybody’s worse nightmare.” Thomas Scantling, 27, of Philadelphia, had failed to take his anti-psychotic mediations but used PCP and other illegal drugs. The judge found that a toxic combination fueled the violence. The September 2008 attack was captured by a security camera on a tape that shows Scantling pull a hammer from a backpack and repeatedly strike DeWayne Taylor, 20, before pulling him from the train onto a subway platform in Philadelphia. Man condemned for killing ex’s friend Austin, Texas – An Austin man has been sentenced to death for the 2003 stabbing to death of a friend of a woman he had dated in an attack witnessed by the victim’s son. The Austin American-Statesman reported a Travis County jury deliberated for about three hours before returning a death sentence for Milton Gobert, 37. Jurors convicted Gobert of capital murder in the stabbing death of Mel Cotton, 37. Gobert had claimed self-defense. Cotton’s son, now 11, whom prosecutors said was stabbed several times by Gobert, testified that he saw his mother being attacked at their home. Prosecutors said Gobert killed Cotton because she helped his ex-girlfriend move out of his apartment. Man pleads not guilty in stabbing Mays Landing, NJ – A New Jersey retirement community resident has pleaded not guilty to fatally stabbing his 88-year-old neighbor and wounding two others. Anthony Milano, 65, of Linwood entered the plea through his attorney. Charges include murder, attempted murder and aggravated assault. Prosecutors say Milano attacked Catherine McGowan and her daughter, 60-year-old Diane Nehmad, outside McGowan’s apartment at the Village at Linwood. An 84-year-old resident was wounded when he tried to intervene. Resident say Milano acted erratically and feuded with his neighbors. He remains jailed in lieu of $2 million bail. Gang member stabs victim with screwdriver In one trial a gang member robbed a pizza store in the morning, knowing that only single person was present. The store manager was a young single mother of two children. The gang member was an ex-employee; she opened the store and allowed him in. The gang member forced the lady to open the safe and took the money. Before leaving he tried to force a blue bandana down the victim’s mouth. She felt that he was trying to kill her. So she fought back. The gang member then slammed her head on the floor several times knocking her out. He then dragged her to another part of the store and stabbed her in the head 15-20 times with a screwdriver, he brought with him. Before leaving her for dead, the gang member dropped a 100-pound helium tank on the victim. The gang member was enraged and committed a violent attack. The victim was cooperative until he tried to force the bandana down her mouth. The suspect in this case was caught a short time later and had a history of drug abuse and addiction. The victim almost died from her head wounds. In fact, during the trial the emergency room doctor stated that the victim’s head and neck wounds were “life threatening.” Ex-student pleads guilty in decapitation

By Tim Huber - The Associated Press CHRISTIANBURG, Va. – A former Virginia Tech student accused of decapitating another student at a campus eatery pleaded guilty to murder Monday as prosecutors described the killer as an obsessed, jilted lover. Haiyang Zhu had fallen in love with Xin Yang but she rejected him, saying that she had a boy friend she planned to marry, prosecutors said in revealing a motive for the first time. Zhu faces up to life in prison. He did not say why he killed the woman during the plea hearing. Prosecutor Brad Finch said on the morning of Jan. 21, Zhu purchased the 8-inch butcher knife used in the murder, two other knives and a claw hammer. He also called Yang a dozen times after buying the weapons. Finch cited a letter Zhu wrote from jail, which said Yang’s rejection “forced him to kill her” because “he loves her too much.” “Xin broke his heart on the morning of January 20th when she told him that she had a boyfriend and that they planned to get married,” the letter said, according to Finch. Before the killing, Zhu penned what Finch termed a love letter that was found in Yang’s dorm room after her death. The letter was written shortly after Zhu first met her and indicated he had “fallen deeply in love.” “She makes him happy and fulfilled, that she is beautiful and that she is beautiful and that he will treasure her forever,” Finch said. “The defendant asked Xin to be his girlfriend.” Finch also described the attack, noting that Yang suffered numerous defensive wounds to her hands and arms as she tried to fend off Zhu. She eventually fell and he severed her head. He was holding it when police arrived. It appeared Yang, who was from Beijing, had met Zhu of Ningbo, China, only recently before she was attacked, Kim Beisecker, the director of Cranwell International Center, has said Zhu had been assisting her in adjusting to life at Tech, something the 500 Chinese students often do for new members in their community. Convicted killer jailed in attack on romantic rival WA SEATTLE – A Seattle woman who was convicted of killing a romantic rival is accused of trying to kill again in a jealous rage over a man. Patricia Crowl was charged with attempted first-degree murder. Police said she used text messages to lure her new boyfriend’s ex to a parking garage and attacked her. The woman called 911 with her cell phone to say she had been “stabbed everywhere.” She survived after being rushed to a hospital. Crowl, 50 was freed from prison in 2006 after serving time for second-degree murder for using a wrench to kill a woman who had been dating Crowl’s then-boyfriend. Crowl was being held on $3 million bail. Woman accused of stabbing mom, officers NY BALDWIN – A Long Island woman is accused of stabbing her mother and two police officers. Nassau County police say the 23-year-old woman stabbed her 49-year-old mother on the arm with scissors during an argument. The victim drove herself to a hospital. Police say when they tried to arrest the daughter at her Baldwin home; she stabbed one officer in the head and slashed a second officer in the face. The woman faces three counts of assault as well as charges of weapon possession and resisting arrest. Minister shot dead after cutting deputy’s hand off Al, Ashland – A man who was shot and killed after cutting off the hand of an east Alabama deputy sheriff trying to arrest him is being described as a minister who started a church and sang gospel music with his family. The Rev Curtis Watts helped build Shining Light Baptist Church in Clay County, and an obituary says he performed with his family as the Watts Family Singers.

Sherriff’s officials say Watts swung an ax while being arrested on a charge stemming from domestic violence allegations and cut off the right hand of Jason Freeman, a sergeant with the Clay County Sheriff’s Department. Freeman’s hand was later surgically reattached. Women with knife shot dead by police CA MODESTO – Police shot to death a woman on an elementary school playground after she came on to campus with a large knife, according to the Modesto Police Department. No students or staff at Catherine Everett Elementary School was injured in the incident, police said. Police have not released the woman’s name, but they described her as a white woman in her 50s. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to Modesto Police Sergeant Brian Findlen. Good Samaritan stabbed with keys VT WILDER – Police say a Good Samaritan who stopped at what he thought was a car accident ended up getting stabbed in the hand by a man who had just rammed his wife’s car. The Barre Times Argus reports that Thomas Bleeks of Norwich was heading home from work when he came upon two cars stopped on an Interstate 91 on-ramp. He told police he saw a man assaulting a woman in one of the cars, and when he reached in to stop him, was stabbed in the hand with a set of keys. Alexey Mameav, 22, of Quechee was charged with drunken driving, domestic assault and five other charges. 3 sentenced in slaying of Wal-Mart worker NH – NOTH HAVERHILL, Three friends who played part in the killing of a developmentally disabled Wal-Mart cashier in New Hampshire are going to prison. Timothy Smith, Anthony Howe and Amber Talbot pleaded guilty earlier this year conspiracy and second-degree murder in the death of Christopher Gray, 25, of Groton, Vt. Prosecutors say Gray was killed for taking a romantic interest in Talbot. She was the girlfriend of defendant Michael Robie. Gray was stabbed more than 30 times in October 2008. Smith and Howe were sentenced to 25 to 50 years. Robie has admitted orchestrating the attack from his jail cell. He will be sentenced at a later date. Loophole lets mentally ill juveniles go free TX TYLER – a 16-year-old former juvenile detainee is accused of stabbing a high school teacher to death with a butcher knife. Another teen was convicted of killing a roofer during a robbery spree. Both were released by the Texas Youth Commission because the agency wasn’t equipped to treat their mental illnesses and had to let them go under the law. The commission has released more than 200 offenders because of mental health issues in the last five years and that more than one-fifth went on to commit new crimes, some of them violent. Man killed after aiding teenager NY New York – A Bronx man died after stepping into an argument between a teenager and a group of young teens. Witnesses said Orlando Salgado, 26, was stopping a 16-year-old involved in a clash between two groups. They said Salgado told the teen, “I’ll hang with you.” According to the witnesses, some of the people involved in the earlier argument came back to the block near Fordham University looking for the terrified teen, and they stabbed both him and Salgado. Police said the teen wasn’t hurt, but Salgado was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital.

Girl slashed with razor in school fight over boy RI Providence – Police say a 14-year-old girl needed stitches after another girl slashed her face and neck with a razor blade during a fight over a boy. The victim told police she was attacked behind Roger Williams Middle School. She said that as she walked to school, she saw a 15-year-old girl who is a student at Roger Williams Middle School come after her. Police say the 14-year-old girl was treated at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, where she received 16 stitches to her face and neck. The fight was broken up by the principal.

Cop Corner by Rena Chase A Soldier Attempts Suicide by Rena Chase An officer on mid-shift, while on patrol was checking a park area that was closed for the night. The officer found a vehicle parked with a male subject standing outside of it. The officer called out his location and engaged the individual, as backup was on their way. The officer had a bad feeling so he had the subject move away from the vehicle and put himself between the subject and the vehicle. The subject started toward the vehicle and was instructed to stop. Backup patrol arrived and the subject was handcuffed for officer safety. The first officer found, upon inspecting the vehicle from the driver’s side window, a shotgun in the backseat. The first officer discovered later that the subject’s wife served him with divorce papers earlier and quite possibly the subject was going to commit suicide in the park. The subject turned out to be a soldier that resided in one of the housing areas on post. The soldier was released over to his unit. The first officer’s intuitions were correct. He felt that if the soldier would have gotten back to his car, the subject might have shot him before turning the gun on himself. The officer on duty was a veteran police officer with military police (MP) and civilian training. The Crazy Soldier by Rena Chase A call was dispatched for a disorderly soldier at one of the training units. No location was given on the location of the soldier. The first two officers on scene went in different directions to try and locate the soldier, since back-up-officers were minutes behind. The Patrol Supervisor was finally directed to where the subject was. Once in the office, the Patrol Supervisor found the

Non Commissioned Officer (NCO) on duty with the soldier in a choke hold. The Patrol Supervisor had the NCO release him. When the subject was free he starts becoming abusive again and the Patrol Supervisor pepper sprayed the subject to try to subdue him. This didn’t work and now it became physical. When I arrived to assist, there was blood on the floor and on part of a wall. My Patrol Supervisor was on top of the soldier face-down on the floor trying to free his hands from underneath. The soldier was fighting this Patrol Supervisor who is 6’2” and weighs approximately 250 pounds while this soldier may have weighted approximately 160 pounds and approximately 5’7” in height. The fourth officer arrived and jumped in with the Patrol Supervisor who was saying to spray him. The soldier was pepper sprayed again, but continued to fight. The fourth officer is about 5’9” and weighs approximately 250 lbs. The first officer was brought to the office and now is a part of the fight too and trying to get a hold of and keep one leg while another officer had the other. A Detective showed up and was told to get flexi-cuffs from one of the cars. Finally the flexi-cuffs were securing his feet and fully cuffed. He was then transported by ambulance, with an officer on board, to the hospital. No one knew what “set him off” according to the NCO on duty. All the officers thought that he had to be on some illegal substance. Usually when you get sprayed you stop what you’re doing, but not this guy even after the second time around. After the toxin-screening/report came back it showed that the soldier was clean for any illegal substances. After a psychology evaluation, this soldier was determined to be crazy and was confined. This was a learning experience for all the officers including the veterans that have been working for years and never came across this situation with someone not on drugs acting like this.
