I am so happy that at the start of this week we are back to normal with all students returning to school for face to face teaching.

Although COVID-19 restrictions still exist it has been pleasing to see the adaptability and flexibility of our school community in making the necessary behavioural changes to routines in order to protect our community. Thank you to our parents, carers and students.

It’s been tremendous to see the level of teamwork amongst staff and the measures implemented by them to keep our students and school community safe at the onset of the COVID-19 crisis. COVID- 19 Education Assistance package from NBN

Parents and carers I wish to advise you that NBN is providing funding to assist phone and internet providers to support low-income family households with school-aged children, who do not currently have an active NBN connection at home. This funding will help phone and internet providers create more affordable offers to connect eligible families during Term 2.

If parents and carers want to take advantage of these offers, they can contact internet providers and ask for special COVID-19 deals. The participating provider will help determine if parents and carers are eligible for assistance. It is important that you read the terms and conditions of the offers carefully.

Messages from the Deputy Principal - Shelley Smith

Values - Our focus for this fortnight is “Self Control” - controlling one’s actions and responses.

Students:

• learn strategies to make positive choices and to control anger so they resist doing things that are not good for them or for others.

• learn to ‘code switch’ so their behaviors are appropriate for the context they are in.

• learn to be aware of what they say and how they say it – recognising sometimes they should say nothing.

Adults:

• model self control.

• discuss instances where people do and don’t exercise self control and the effect it has on others.

• after an incident discuss with the child how they could/would behave next time and what they could do differently - get them to come up with suggestions and strategies.

Library NewsKindergarten students are borrowing their books and also shared “Where is the Green Sheep?” and “We Don’t Eat our Classmates”. At the moment I am encouraging an enjoyment of literature, as I do with all classes and also training students about the library routine. They enjoy a range of activities including singing with the songs on the screen while they are waiting for their classmates to borrow their books.

Pre Primary students also shared “Where is the Green Sheep?” and talked about opposites. This week we started our author study on Laura Numeroff “If you Give a Dog a Donut” and did some text innovation writing. Writing will be a focus in library sessions for Pre Primary.

Year 1 students compared “Where is the Green Sheep?” and “Goodnight Sleep Tight” by Mem Fox. They discussed using a Venn diagram to represent similarities and differences.

Year 2 students started their author study on Mo Willems. They created some fantastic creatures following his instruction and this week they are sharing facts about him. See some photos of the creatures below.

Year 3 students watched “Click, Clack Moo” by Doreen Cronin and this week they did a re-enactment. They are also learning to do a library search using the Bookmark search on the computer.

Year 4-6 students watched clips about self-control and had individual, team and whole class discussions about our current value. This week they have created posters of strategies that can be used when you feel you are losing self control. They will be laminated and displayed around the school.

Kitchen GardenFollowing our clean up in Week 2, I had some leaders who helped with planting. We planted onions, peas, beans, carrots and beetroot. We look forward to seeing them grow in the kitchen garden beds over the next weeks. HOOSCI have also planted a bed and students can visit their bed to look after their plants when they attend HOOSCI. Some classes have also planted their beds so there will be a lot of growth in the garden over the coming weeks. I am looking forward to having our wonderful kitchen garden committee back on the school grounds but in the mean time we will keep the garden growing.

Classroom Reports

Room 1 News - By Mr ShortAs things start to return to normal, Year 1 is back to its old self. With the unknown being replaced with routine we are starting to make real headway on the time we have lost. For our Mother’s Day project, we took the opportunity to investigate waterproof materials with the intention of making recycled pots. Within these, we planted our class plants that we propagated at the start of the year. It was a great learning project and a lot of fun!

In Writing, students are showing great improvements in their structure and attention to detail. With a focus on narrative writing, students are starting to use their senses to add adjectives to their work. We are excited to have a full class with everyone safe and sound and look forward to the rest of the term with a few more projects on the horizon.

Classroom Reports

Room 9 News - By Mr ProkojesIt’s been great to have our whole class back at school over the past week. We’ve been able to catch up with our friends and return to normal school routines.

We have started exploring ‘time’ as part of our Measurement and Geometry unit in Mathematics. To help us learn how to accurately read the time, and convert 12-hour time to 24-hour time, we are playing lots games in class in cooperative teams that have been designed by Dr Paul Swann, who is an Australian expert in Mathematics.

In Art, we have been looking at silhouettes, as well as warm and cool colours. We created landscape images of African plains at sunset by using warm colours to show the silhouettes of trees and animals of Africa. Check out some of our amazing work! Our next art piece will have a focus on the contrast between warm and cool colours, which we are really looking forward to!

P & C Notices

Welcome to Week 4 everyone!!

It feels like there is not much to update as in previous times due to the limited activity for the P&C, but we hope the lifting of restrictions within the state are a positive sign of what’s to come.

Thank you for the overwhelming support for the Mother’s Day Stall! We hope all the Mothers had a wonderful day and enjoyed their gifts, carefully chosen by students. Although each group was given limits to choose items (due to less stock this year), it was wonderful to hear that students had eagerly and patiently waited for the chance to come back for more purchases. An enormous thank you to the teachers for accommodating this during their class time and to Mrs Knox for personally assisting each class. It was a fun for all involved. We sold 80 percent of items available, with the final money count being completed tomorrow.

Our fundraising committee is making some tough decisions with what is to be carried out this year. One of our largest fundraisers, Cadbury Chocolate Drive, looks to be paused for this year. The financial out lay and requirement to sell chocolates within the community is a concern during this time. We will be looking to revisit this when the next meeting is able to be carried out.

With the increase to 20 people in a gathering, the P&C will look to determining when we can start to meet again. It will be an opportunity to revisit and readjust proposed plans for 2020. We are waiting to for further changes to restrictions so when we meet we will be able to confidently plan.

We would like to also thank the kitchen garden for their valuable contribution for the Mother’s Day Stall. The beautiful succulent pots were snapped up quickly with not a single one left. I personally was in awe of how fabulous they all looked on display and the creativity of each pot. Thank you!

For the meanwhile, continue to stay healthy and happy everyone.

Penny Lee (P&C President)
