Filmmakers, authors, artists, and athletes entrust us with their creative works and feats of passion year after year. We are honoured by this, and extremely grateful! Still, every year, we’re repeatedly asked, “Where are the women?” Clearly many of you are missing women’s stories, missing role models for yourselves and your daughters, missing the female perspective. The stories exist. That, we know. Take just the last couple of years of live presentations here in Banff: Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, Dervla Murphy, Lynsey Dyer, Pat Deavoll, Edurne Pasaban, Sarah McNair-Landry, and Maria Coffey have all graced our stages and shared their adventures. This year we welcome adventurer, Cecilie Skog and big wall climber, Sílvia Vidal. Our Opening Night Film, The Summit, features Skog – who will be in attendance along with director, Nick Ryan.

2013 also sees Tim Cope, who won the 2011 People’s Choice award for this fi lm On the Trail of Genghis Khan, return with his fi nished book of the same journey. Jonesy and Aleksander Gamme of the 2012 triple-award-winning fi lm, Crossing the Ice, will romp on stage together for the fi rst time ever. Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker make their fi rst Canadian appearance following the success of the short fi lm, Wide Boyz (Best Short Mountain Film 2012). And how better to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the fi rst ascent of Everest than in stunning 3D with Canadian director, Leanne Pooley’s Beyond the Edge; a conversation with environmentalist and former Himalayan climber, Apa Sherpa; presentation and exhibition comprised of George Lowe’s remarkable photographs as presented by author Huw Lewis-Jones; and 2013 Voice of Adventure Tom Hornbein, to help mark the 50th anniversary of the fi rst American ascent of Everest.

I urge you to join us in supporting all artists and adventurers in their creative ventures through reputable online funding platforms such as Indiegogo and Kickstarter. Help breathe life into the stories you’d like to see so the inspiration continues!

Our remarkable team here at The Banff Centre never ceases to astound me. On their behalf, I thank all the storytellers for sharing. I thank our supporters, partners, and volunteers. And I thank you, our audience. The Festival’s celebration of mountain culture and mountain life refl ects who we are as a community. Our reverence for the mountains inspires our day-to-day life and our vision for the future. And, each year through the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival, we are able to share the joy that is Banff with you – and with thousands of others around the globe through our World Tour.

The 20th annual Banff Mountain Book Competition marked an exciting change to our award announcement process and the addition of an award category, Mountain Fiction and Poetry. This year, we received over 130 titles from 10 countries and once our longlist was established, thanks to the tireless reading efforts of our volunteer readers, our international jury went to work establishing the shortlist of award winners and the Grand Prize winner.

Sixty years ago humans had not yet set foot on the moon. The effects of high altitude were as unknown as outer space and the gear was far from what we now consider “technical”. What was it like to climb Everest under those physical and mental conditions? Through archival footage, and using audio recordings with expedition members as narration, the British expedition of the first ascent of Everest in 1953 is recreated and presented in 3D. Beyond the Edge is such a seamless experience that we transcend our modern knowledge and context, allowing us to understand the unknowns of Everest as Hillary and Norgay once did, and appreciate the true significance of their accomplishment.

COMpEtitiOn and awardsThe 2013 Banff Mountain Film Competition saw 365 films submitted from 36 countries. One of the most difficult jobs at any competitive festival is choosing the winners. This process starts with our pre-screening committee, who this year viewed all 365 films. From these, 89 finalists were selected.

During the Festival, our international jury – selected to represent a range of knowledge and experience in film production, distribution, film criticism, and mountaineering – screens each finalist and determines the award winners. A sincere thank you goes to each of them for helping us ensure that fine filmmaking is recognized and rewarded, and that our Festival programming continues to be of the finest quality.

The awards will be announced on Sunday evening, November 3, in the Eric Harvie Theatre. The winners will be listed at banffmountainfestival.ca.

Presented by the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival at The Banff Centre since 1987, and sponsored by Canadian Mountain Holidays the annual Summit of Excellence Award recognizes an individual who has made a signifi cant contribution to mountain life in the Canadian Rockies. The Award is presented in memory of Calgary climber Bill March.

There aren’t many people who venture into the mountains in Western Canada without fi rst taking a look at the Handbook of the Canadian Rockies. Consistently updated through the years and known as “the Bible” for Canadian mountain enthusiasts, it logs every plant, animal, and rock type found in the region, written for both weekend hikers and serious mountaineers. The Handbook’s author, BEN GADD, a teacher, naturalist, guide, and award-winning author, will receive the 2013 Summit of Excellence Award on Sunday, November 3, during the awards presentation in the Eric Harvie Theatre.

Mountaineer Barry Blanchard, one of those who nominated Gadd for the award, said “I can think of no other person who can tell me what is going on 10,000 feet below me, as well as 10,000 feet above.” As part of the Summit of Excellence award committee, Bernadette McDonald added, “Ben Gadd’s knowledge of natural history in the Canadian Rockies, and the way in which he shares that knowledge, is a huge contribution to the people who live here and to tens of thousands of those who visit the area.”

In addition to researching and writing the ground-breaking Handbook of the Canadian Rockies, Gadd has written nine other books including the best-selling novel Raven’s End, and he’s received three Banff Mountain Book Competition awards for his work. With a degree in earth science, Gadd has pursued a career mainly in natural history, including working for Parks Canada as a naturalist. He has taught writing at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and Grant MacEwan University, and for nearly 30 years has worked as a freelance interpretive guide – one of only eight master guides in Canada’s professional Interpretive Guides Association – and as a writer and sought-after lecturer on Rockies topics. Gadd supports various conservation groups in promoting wilderness protection.Past recipients of the award include: Geoff Powter (2012), Philippe Delesalle (2011), Peter Fuhrmann (2010), Sid Marty (2009), Don Vockeroth (2008), Bernadette McDonald (2007), Gill and Tony Daffern (2006), Glen Boles (2005), Craig Richards (2004), Willi Pfi sterer (2003), Barry Blanchard (2002), Bob Sandford (2001), Chic Scott (2000), Guy Lacelle (1999), John Martin (1998), Sharon Wood (1997), Tim Auger (1996), Brian Greenwood (1995), Kiwi Gallagher (1994), Roger Vernon (1993), Jon Whyte (1992), Don Forest (1991), Pat Morrow (1990), Hans Gmoser (1989), Jim Davies (1988), and Bruno Engler (1987).

In June 2013, 11 climbers were massacred by suspected terrorists at Nanga Parbat basecamp. The incident prompted worldwide discussion about the safety of foreigners while adventuring to remote locales. Media reports of kidnappings, armed robberies, and threats to adventure travelers seem more frequent than ever. Our panelists have experienced remote cultures and sometimes life-threatening moments but most continue to venture abroad. Is the adventure worth it? With climbers Raphael Slawinski, Steve Swenson, and Beth Rodden, and adventurers/authors Tim Cope and Anik See.
