Residency Program

An important milestone in the history of postgraduate medical education (MD, MS) in Bangladesh is the introduction of residen-cy program. The University started this residency program in 2000 but was not continued due to political reason. Residency program was reintrodu-ced in March 2010 with an intention to provide effective education in Medical Sciences in graduate levels. The students in residency program enter into the course on 1st March of each year. Students are admitted on merit basis through a tough competitive examination. About one in 15 applicants get admission into these courses. Residency program has two phases: Phase A and B. The duration of phase A is 2 years and phase B is 3 years with some exceptions. The academic year starts in March of each year and ends in

February of the next year. Course directors, course coordinators and course supervisors are selected from the teachers. They are actively involved in the implementation as well as monitoring of courses. Orientation training of the teachers is provided on regular basis by the experienced teachers. Courses and curriculum were prepared for each of the department. There are formation of three months block. At the end of each block there is an evaluation by a modified method of CanMed. Summative exams are held at the end of Phase A & Phase B. Summative exams must be completed within the academic calendar year. Logbooks are introduced and guidelines are followed for end of the block examinations. Each private student is getting scholarship money of Tk. 10,000 (ten thousand taka) per month, those are not in service.

BSc in Nursing

The University constitution had approved the Faculty of Nursing as one of the eighth faculties but it should only be the postgraduate course. Four faculties were functioning initially when the University started in 1998. The faculties were Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Surgery and Faculty of Dentistry.

The fifth one, Faculty of Nursing, started its four-year B.Sc course in April 2011 after amendment of the University Act at the parliament. Each year 25 students (80% are female) are getting admission with an intention to be skilled nurses of international standard. All students are getting scholarship.

Subsequently it was transformed into Institu-tional Review Board (IRB) in 2012. The number of protocols submitted were increasing.

The ethical issue of research projects is re-viewed by the Ethical Committee. Each year a large number of research protocols are submit-ted by the students and teachers for ethical clearance. The existing Ethical Committee was restructured in 2010. Now-a-day, the Ethical Committee is conducting regular meetings and giving feedback to the protocol submitters. In addition, there were technical committees which are responsible to examine the technical issue of the research protocols. However, there was no integrity among these two committees.
