BANGLADESH Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) Curriculum vitae (of President, DCCI) and professional role Mr. Hossain Khaled, President of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI), is a BBA in Accounting from University of Toledo, Ohio, USA and an MBA in International Banking from Texas A&M University, Texas, USA. Hossain Khaled is the Chairman of Bangladesh Finance and Investment Co. Ltd. and City Brokerage Limited. He is the Vice Chairman of BD Finance Capital Holdings Ltd. And BD Finance Securities Ltd. He is the Managing Director of Anwar Group of Industries and The City Bank Limited. He was also the President of DCCI during the year of 2007 & 2008. He was also the Senior Vice President of DCCI during the year of 2006 and Vice President during the year of 2002 & 2003. Opportunities and challenges for entrepreneurship in your country/region Bangladesh has a huge section of young population. Each of every four persons is youth in Bangladesh. By the year 2021 the number of juvenile section of our country will reach about 60 million. People of Bangladesh are more entrepreneurial than many other countries. Entrepreneurs-friendly environment and government policies help developing entrepreneurship. Government is facilitating young generation to come into business through its different wings like Ministry of Youth and Sports, Youth Development Department, Small and Cottage Industries Training Institute, SME Foundation etc. Bangladesh Bank (Central Bank of the country) has a special fund to promote new entrepreneurs. Scheduled Banks are also taking different packages to encourage entrepreneurship. But there are challenges. Some times the would-be entrepreneurs bring them back from their initiatives due to fear, lack of knowledge, capital, and lack of confidence. To meet the challenges, DCCI came forward and took an initiative of creating 2000 entrepreneurs in the country. DCCI organized hundreds of motivational workshops and several meetings with all financial institutions. DCCI successfully organized Entrepreneurship & Innovation Expo last year in association with Bangladesh Bank. As a part of this initiative, Bangladesh Bank has already created a fund of 1 billion BDT to finance the new entrepreneurs. Description of the Chamber: public or private? Local, regional, national? It has been a pioneer in rendering services for the development of private sector business and industry in Bangladesh for over five decades. DCCI represents more than 38 categories of small, medium and large entrepreneurs. It has more than 4000 members. Which key projects does your Chamber realize?

NTF III Project: The NTF III Project is a part of Netherlands Trust Fund phase III. The NTF III Bangladesh project aims to increase the income of Bangladesh IT & ITES exporters by enhancing competitiveness. Enhancing Export Capacities of Asian LDCs for Intra-regional Trade: DCCI signed a MoU with ITC for the implementation of the activities related to the project for “Enhancing Export Capacities of Asian Least Developed countries for Intra-regional Trade” which aims at increasing exports of small and medium sized enterprise. DCCI Entrepreneurship & Innovation Expo: DCCI in cooperation with Bangladesh Bank has taken an initiative of creating 2000 new entrepreneurs in the country. The main objective of this event is to create self-employment opportunities for young generation and contribute to the GDP growth. To create more employment opportunities in manifold, development of entrepreneurship can play the effective role. Business Initiative Leading Development (BUILD): DCCI in partnership with two other Chambers of Commerce in Bangladesh has joined hands and established public private dialogue platform named Business Initiative Leading Development (BUILD). BUILD is a platform of public-private dialogue that assists in the development of Bangladesh’s private sector by policy advocacy to the government addressing investment climate constraints. The most important challenge for your Chamber in the future (max 150 words) The most challenging task for DCCI in the future is to ensure and help create business friendly environment for its members in the context of the social instability due to lack of administrative fairness, accountability and transparency. Any interesting experience or success story your Chamber went through (max 200 words) (A) DCCI got the best local chamber award 2010 by the Confederation of Asia Pacific Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CACCI). (B) DCCI won 1st prize in the “Best Skill Development Programme” category in World Chambers Competition in 2007. (C) DCCI was selected as Finalist in the “Best Unconventional Project” category in World Chambers Competition in 2011. (D) International Trade Centre awarded DCCI “MLS-SCM Best Institution” in 2010.
