HSIE FacultyYear 12 Geography Town Planning FieldworkThis week the HSC class of 2015 visited Coolangatta and Tweed Heads complementing the HSC topic, ‘Urban Places’. Students learnt about the interesting local town planning history relating to shipping, the Tweed port, railway yards, border fence, the development of Greenbank Island, the Bay St. redevelopment and interesting local characters such as Pat Fagan and Jack Evans. Students are currently writing up a fieldwork report on their findings.

There are two car park levels and a student car park at the Mahers Lane campus. For the safety of your children and others please follow these guidelines.

Before and after school the lower car park level is used for buses only. Parents, please do not park in or drive through this level before or after school – use the top level car park. With approximately twelve buses driving through this area of a morning and afternoon, this should decrease the congestion.

The top car park level (where the shelter with seating is located) is designed as the student drop off and pick up area. To avoid congestion in this area we ask the following:

• Parents to move as far along the top pick up area as possible.

• Do not stop on the crossing or in the middle of the road – move to one side

• Do not stop or park in the allocated disabled car park

The car park on the adjoining block is for senior students’ parking. In the afternoon parents are often parking in this area to pick up their children at the same time as our senior students are trying to leave. We are concerned with the number of younger students running behind vehicles that are reversing. The correct pick up area is in the top driveway of the main school block.

Another area of concern is Mahers Lane itself. Please do not double park to collect students or do a U–turn across the double lines. For the safety of all please collect students from the top driveway.

Year 8 Geography Water Bug SurveyThe Year 8 Geography classes of Mrs Wharton and Mr Seguin took to Ukerebagh Passage this week netting water-bugs as part of their study of threatened habitats. Tweed Shire Council has developed an artificial wetland through which urban runoff from South Tweed is purified naturally. Students used a water-bug key to identify species and found the local aquatic ecosystem to be in good health. Students then made their way through Ukerebagh Nature Reserve to the Minjungbal bora ring, learning of the rich local aboriginal heritage of the Tweed region.

Cross CountryAll Lindisfarne students who represented NCIS at the NSWCIS Cross Country Championships on Thursday last week: Nina Murphy, Etienne McDonald, Cooper Thomson, Olivia Copeland, Marlon Harrison, Jessica Courtney, Oliver Churchill, Indigai Arnold, Emily Lowns, Mya Henry, Piper Harrison, Brodie Copeland, Nathaniel Bryant, Jonathan Davies, Thomas Tatchell and Sam Hope. Particular mention must go to Tom Courtney and Brodie Copeland who have qualified to represent CIS by finishing seventh and eighth in their respective age categories of 109 and 102 competitors.

SoccerThe Bill Turner Cup boys who played Trinity College, Lismore on Tuesday. It really was a game of two halves! Zac Lawrence-Hamden opened the scoring with an excellent goal three minutes before the half-time whistle, only for Trinity to equalize with twenty seconds left on the clock! The home team dominated the second half, making it 4 – 1 before Zac scored Lindisfarne’s second goal. The final score of 5 - 2 did not really reflect the intensity of the game. Lindisfarne should be proud of their achievements as they were runners-up in the region for the first time.

Good luck to:

Entertainment BookIn the past the Lindisfarne Parents and Friends Association has organised and distributed the Entertainment Book as a fundraising initiative for Lindisfarne. Due to commitments of the 2015 FunFest, it has been reluctantly decided that the P&F will not proceed with the distribution of the Entertainment Book for 2015.

This decision has not been made lightly and the P&F has advised that the Entertainment Book can still be purchased via the Entertainment Book website, https://www.entertainmentbook.com.au/orderbooks/144035g. By purchasing the book this way you are continuing to contribute to the fund raising efforts of the Lindisfarne P&F as a small percentage from each purchase will be donated back to the association.

The Entertainment Book will again be available directly through the P&F in 2016.
