An optical illusion is an image that tricks the eye.

For example, if you think that the pink circle on the left is smaller than the one on the right, you have been tricked by an illusion!

The image below is one of the most famous optical illusions.

Are these two lines the same length?

Draw precisely the inverted-T illusion.

b) If she had cut the watermelon into 12 pieces, how many pieces would she have to put on the plate to have the same quantity of watermelon?

How do you grow a cubic watermelon?

problem 8 A Great Invention

Mathventure for 4th Grade

Over 1,500 years ago, in China, it was discovered that a magnetized needle pointed North. Someone had the brilliant idea to use this discovery to create an orientation tool. As a result, the compass was born.

Imagine that you’re in the desert.

You decide to walk in a direction that makes a 20° angle with North. Then you turn 60° to the left to walk a distance two times longer. Lastly, you decide to return to your point of departure by taking the shortest path possible.

In which direction should you walk the last part of your journey?

In construction, for example, it’s common to form angles. The photograph shows wood that has been cut at a 45° angle.

Using the protractor onthe drawing tablet, draw an angle that measures:

a) 30°

b) 45°

c) 60°

d) 150°

e) 210°
