BARAS: GENERAL INFO

Baras is a first class municipality

According to the latest census, it has a population of 31,524 people in 4,971 households

Politically subdivided into 10 barangays  (9 urban, 1 rural): Evangelista, Rizal (Pob),

San Jose, San Salvador, Santiago, Concepcion, San Juan, San Miguel, Mabini, Pinugay

ECONOMIC FACTORS predominantly agricultural economy; 60% of

the population depend on farming, fishing, and livestock raising as a means of livelihood

77% of registered firms belong to Tertiary sector (Service sector); retailing, wholesaling, personal services

Primary sector: second biggest in registered firms; eg. agricultural farms-- piggeries, poultry and crop farms

Biggest firms engaged in swine and broiler production -- generally located in elevated areas/ northern portion of the municipality

ECONOMIC FACTORS Members of the business sector pointed out

the disadvantages of present layout of the barangay boundaries

Crop Production: Rice (primaryproduce) takes up 74% of cultivated land and 42% of total crop production

Rootcrops (cassava, sweet potato and gabi) are the chief upland harvest

ORGANIC FARMING Baras is the first organic town in the

Philippines

Municipal government project FAITH (Food Always in the Home) encourages families to grow organic vegetables

Mentoring projects: farmers from the Kasamahan sa Kalikasang Pagsasaka Multipurpose Cooperative (Kakasa) will be assigned to guide and mentor two to three out of school youths in practical organic vegetable production

ORGANIC FARMING Ideal for several reasons: - demand for organically-grown vegetables is

high- requires intensive labor but does not require

much capital- The yield is premium safe produce,

without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers- It grows vegetables that stay fresh longer

apart from being tastier and more nutritious

ECONOMIC FACTORS Farmer group KAKASA (Kasamahan sa

Kalikasang Pagsasaka Multipurpose Cooperative) involves 15 active organic vegetable farmers

Fishing: 2nd most common source of income

Three coastal barangays: Santiago, Mabini and Evangelista

Fish products are sold locally, to neighboring towns and to Metro Manila by three known traders in the municipality
