A group of top automotive de-signers has selected Ed Welburnas the recipient of the 2018 Eyes-On Design Lifetime DesignAchievement Award for his out-standing career in vehicle de-sign.The annual award is unique in
that the selection is made by theprevious winners of the award,said EyesOn spokesperson KathyLightbody. This group includesChris Bangle, Nuncio Bertone,Wayne Cherry, Walter de’Silva,Willie G. 2017 has been an interestingyear for General Motors, accord-ing to CEO Mary Barra.She spoke to the Automotive
Press Association at a specialevent held at the Gem Theater inDetroit last week.The event was moderated by
Cox Automotive’s Michelle Krebs,who got things rolling by asking
how 2017 set up 2018.Barra said that GM remains
dedicated to the improving re-turn on investment. That meansbeing a focused company.And in 2018, Barra said, GM
will have new and improvedproducts.Krebs then asked when GM got
fully behind the idea of going allin with autonomous technology.“GM has a rich history con-

Ford Motor Company hasawarded $200,000 in funding,part of the Bill Ford Better WorldChallenge (BFBWC), to supporttwo international projects to im-prove health and sanitation con-ditions in India and Mexico.The grants, which were given
out last week. are included inFord Motor Company Fund’s an-nual community improvementcampaign that launched in 2015as part of the 10th anniversary ofthe Ford Volunteer Corps, saidFord spokesman Todd Nissen.The challenge is jointly funded
by the Ford Fund and Bill Ford,executive chairman of Ford Mo-tor Company, Nissen said. Theprogram works to give employeevolunteers the opportunity toserve with community activistsin places worldwide where Forddoes business. It encourages em-ployees and community partnersto submit ideas that will solveglobal problems including issuessurrounding mobility, as well asthe scarcity of food, water andshelter.“I am extremely proud of the

Kancheepuram, India, just out-side of Chennai where toilets andprivate restroom facilities arenonexistent, the $140,000 grantwill provide 100 residentialSMART toilets in three villagesfor a total of 300 toilets, Nissensaid. The SMART toilet facility isequipped with lighting, allows for
hand washing, and provides twinpits for sustainable use andmaintenanceAn education program for resi-
dents on good hygiene and sani-tation practices.“In these rural villages, open
defecation is the normal prac-tice,” said Jennifer Leonard, aFord brake engineer who is man-aging the project. “This practiceproliferates disease, increaseschild mortality rates, and in-creases a woman’s chance of be-ing attacked. Our hope with thisprogram is to work to improvehealth conditions while offeringpeople privacy, dignity and safe-ty.”Construction in Kancheepu-
ram is slated to begin in Januarywith planned completion in fall2018, Nissen said. Installation ofthe toilets will be done using vol-unteer help from Ford employeesat the Chennai plant and will bemanaged by Gramalaya, a non-profit in India that works to in-stall SMART toilets. Gramalaya,with 30 years of experience in
sanitation programs, is dedicat-ed to helping India become anopen defecation-free country.In Guayacan, Mexico, near Her-
mosillo, potable water is a rarity.The $60,000 grant will:• Build the Guayacan Commu-
nity Center, where filtered waterwill be available to residents,along with access to bathroomswith toilets and running waterfor hand washing.• Offer up to 750 families the
opportunity to have their own in-home water filtration system fora one-time payment of $5 (U.S.);Ford is working with Aqua ClaraInternational, a Michigan-basednonprofit, to provide the waterfilters.• Free breakfast every Sunday,
offered in conjunction with a lo-cal church.• Community center will serve

The folks at Global Facilitiesand Environmental at the TechCenter in Warren got to celebratea couple of refunds worth mil-lions of dollars from DTE Energyand Consumers Power.A ceremony where the refunds
were officially presented to GMwas held at the Tech Center’sChilled Water Plant on Dec. 14.The refunds – $6.3 million from
DTE and $1.7 from CP – are theresult of years of work betweenGM and the utilities, said DaneParker, vice president of GlobalFacilities and Environmental.“We, as a company, appreciate
the partnership between us andthem,” Parker said. “These re-fund checks are meaningful to usand it also helps GM make carsmore affordable for our cus-tomers. We’ve done this in an en-
vironment of change. Five yearsago Mary Barra said that the au-to industry would change morein the next five years than it didin the previous 100. We are nowhalfway through that five years.This is a great time of year to re-flect on what we’ve done.”Basically, said Gary Londo,

Londo said, “we had to keeppower and gas to the Tech Cen-ter up and running. That took alot of planning. Getting the workdone was sort of like changing atire on your bicycle while stillpedaling. During the work, wehad to make sure that 99.9 per-cent of the power normally avail-able was available.”Working with Consumers Pow-
er, GM installed a new TridiumNiagara Building Automation Sys-tem (BAS) in 11 buildings, com-prising more than four millionsquare feel to optimize HVAC airhandler performance and reduceenergy use, Parker said.Additionally, GM replaced sev-
eral 50-year-old large campussteam boilers with three newCleaver Brooks high efficiency90,000 pound-per-hour steamboilers that will also reduce ener-gy usage. They replaced two oldsteam boilers at the GAE buildingand replaced 229,000 square feetof roof sections on five differentbuildings on the campus.Working with DTE, GM re-
placed two older inefficientchillers with two new more effi-cient 3,000 ton chillers at thechilled water plant, Parker said.They also completed 11 chillertune-ups to increase chiller effi-ciency in several buildings andinstalled a Variable FrequencyDrive to reduce energy consump-tion on several HVAC fans andpumps in several buildings oncampus.They also replaced 146 older
high wattage exterior streetlightfixtures with energy efficient,lower wattage LED lights whichcan now be remotely controlled.GM didn’t stop with outsidelights.The company replaced older,
inefficient interior fluorescent
lighting with energy efficient LEDlighting at the Operations Engi-neering Center, the VEC Podiumand the VEC East building.They installed an energy effi-
cient reflective Cool Roof systemat the PPO building and event de-tected and repaired a major com-pressed air leak within the infra-structure, Parker said.Sean McCoy, Outreach manag-
er for the DTE Energy’s Energy Ef-ficiency Program for Business,was on at the ceremony.He said DTE got together with
GM as part of the utility’s largerefforts to work with its biggestcustomers to improve energy us-age. Part of what they did was
work with GM to centralize howenergy was distributed.“We used to have plants and
staff all over the place sendingenergy to GM,” McCoy said. “Theinformation didn’t go to a centrallocation. We decided to tie every-thing together and have one ded-icated engineer manage every-thing.“The approach has worked
well. And we’ve fostered a greatrelationship with GM.”Glenn Barba, controller and
vice president at CP, said thepartnership his company haswith GM is special.“They are a valuable cus-
tomer,” Barba said. “We share
the same passions. We both careabout the success of our cus-tomers and we both want ourcustomers to be our customersfor life.“And we want to help grow the
economy of Michigan and weshare a passion for the planet.”CP is glad to be able to provide
energy in a sustainable way. Theyworked with GM on many differ-ent projects that saved 230,000cubic feet of natural gas, result-ing in 14,000 fewer tons of carbondioxide being emitted into the at-mosphere.“That’s the equivalent of re-
moving 2,700 Toyotas from theroad,” Barba said.

(AP) – Statelegislators on Dec. 13 quickly ap-proved spending $23.2 million toaddress what state regulatorssaid is an emerging problem ofdrinking water contaminationcaused by chemicals used in fire-fighting foams, cleaning productsand industrial applications.Contamination from per- and
polyfluoroalkyl substances, orPFAS, has been identified in 14Michigan communities.It recently has drawn intense
scrutiny north of Grand Rapids,where footwear companyWolverine World Wild dumpedwaste sludge decades ago, and ator nearby multiple militarybases.The funding, included in a
$52.8 million supplemental budg-et bill, would pay for response ef-forts, lab equipment, water sam-pling and other functions associ-ated with the project.Fifteen new state employees
would be hired to help the statedeal with the problem.“We have no greater responsi-
bility than to protect the publichealth of our constituents,’’ saidRep. Chris Afendoulis, a Republi-can from Grand Rapids Town-ship.The chemicals are widespread
in the environment and havebeen detected in blood of peopleand animals around the world,according to the U.S. Agency forToxic Substances and DiseaseRegistry.The agency’s website says sci-
entists are uncertain about howthey affect human health at expo-sure levels typically found infood and water.But some studies suggest the
chemicals might affect fetal de-velopment, disrupt hormonalfunctions, damage fertility andimmune systems, and boost therisk of cancer.Gov. Rick Snyder a month ago
signed an executive directive es-tablishing a PFAS team to coordi-nate response efforts among lo-cal, state and federal agenciesthat are currently working onthis problem.The legislation won approval
from a Senate committee andboth chambers in a matter ofhours, on a 33-4 Senate vote anda 109-1 House vote.It was the last day of legislative
voting in 2017.The spending bill also includes
a provision allowing a plannednew state veterans home in De-troit to be located outside the
city, which drew criticism fromsome Democrats in the state leg-islature.The state Veterans Affairs
Agency said it has had troublefinding an adequate place tobuild in Detroit.The measure would expand
the project scope to includeWayne, Oakland and Macombcounties.If a site were not found in the
tri-county region within 45 days,then the search would be ex-panded further to the greatersoutheast Michigan area.Sen. David Knezek, a Dearborn
Heights Democrat, said it wouldbe “unconscionable’’ to ask De-troit residents to move an houraway to live in the facility.But Senate Appropriations
Committee Chairman DaveHildenbrand, a Lowell Republi-can, said state officials “needthat flexibility to find the rightproperty and the right location.’’The state of Michigan has two
homes now, in Grand Rapids andMarquette, but there are plans tobuild a new facility in the Detroitarea and to replace and downsizethe current facility in GrandRapids.A third of the state’s 640,000
veterans live in just three coun-ties in the state.The are Wayne, Oakland and
Macomb.The bill includes $25 million
for brownfield remediation andredevelopment, water asset man-agement and drinking watermonitoring. Of that total, $14 mil-lion would replace environmen-tal cleanup money that has driedup.The money would come from
the $35 million Michigan Infra-structure Fund.The bill also calls for $1 million
to train schools on water testingand includes the authorization ofconstruction projects at SaginawState University, four communitycolleges, a new state police postin the Grand Rapids area and up-grades at one of the state’s fishhatcheries.

DETROIT (AP) – Hyundai andKia are recalling more than ahalf-million compact cars in theU.S. because the brake lightsmay not go out when the pedal isreleased.The recall was issued on Dec.
13.The recall covers more than
390,000 Hyundai Elantra vehiclesfrom the 2013 and 2014. Also in-cluded are over 134,000 KiaForte cars from 2012 through2014.The companies say in docu-
ments recently filed with thegovernment that a polymer stop-per pad between the pedal armand the light switch can deterio-rate.This allows the switch to stay
on.That, in turn, can keep the
brake lights illuminated and alsolet a driver shift the vehicle outof park without putting a foot onthe brake.Neither company reported any
crashes or injuries resultingfrom this problem.

Employees at GM’s WarrenTransmission plant were able toraise $3,500 this year for the U.S.Marine Corps’ annual Toys forTots holiday toy drive.
John Giannetti, UAW Local 909activity representative said thatbeing able to give this year is es-pecially meaningful.
“It’s been a challenge,” Gian-netti said. “The plant, right now,is at a low in terms of employ-ment. We had a layoff in June,and there is also some employeeidling because of another tempo-rary layoff.”
Giannetti said that they maketransmissions for GM’s Volt, theV6 Impala, the GMC Acadia andthe 6-speed Cadillac XTS.
“But despite this, we’ve had agood outpouring of donationsfrom people who work here,” Gi-annetti said. “This toy giveawayis something we do every year.It’s always fun to do things thatwill help make people’s Christ-mas merry.”
Giannetti admitted that he en-joys going to the toy store withfellow Transmission plant em-ployees to pick out the gifts theygive away.
“It makes you feel like a kidagain, being able to walk downthe aisles of a toy store and seewhat was available and see whatthis year’s toys are,” Giannettisaid.
“It does the heart good to beable to do that. Warren Transmis-sion is a special place and it hasspecial people who work herewho are willing to open their
hearts to help others. We spendthe entire year looking for waysto raise money for this event. It’snot just something we do aroundthe holiday season. This is ayear-long commitment.”
Warren Transmission salariedemployees also help out. This isthe first year Tamberlin Goldenhas been plant manager at War-ren Transmission, and she saidshe was impressed when shelearned what people there did.
“We work for a great companyand we work with great people,”Golden said. “All of us areblessed, but there are those outthere who aren’t blessed, and weare proud to be able to look forthe opportunity to give back tothe community. I have a daugh-ter, Toya, and I told her what itwas like to walk by the toys ondisplay in the lobby.
“One day I took a picture of theChristmas tree display and all
the toys under it and showed itto her. When she saw the picture,she was impressed.”
Giannetti said UAW Local 909and other employees at WarrenTransmission hold fundraisersthroughout the year to pay forthe toys.
“This is a tradition we’ve beendoing here at Warren Transmis-sion,” Giannetti said. “It’s a tradi-tion we’ll keep going as long asI’m here.”

Since 2016, health depart-ments across Southeast Michi-gan have mounted a strong ef-fort to combat the hepatitis Aoutbreak in the region, said GaryPetroni, executive director of theSoutheast Michigan Health Asso-ciation (SMHA).
The outbreak is predominant-ly affecting Livingston, Macomb,Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair,Washtenaw and Wayne Counties,Petroni said. SMHA urges peoplein these counties to learn abouthepatitis A vaccination.
Each of the affected countyhealth departments is offeringexpanded opportunities for thevaccination, including eveninghours and multiple communitylocations, Petroni said.
He said people who preparefood or beverages for others inthe service industry are a priori-ty for vaccination.
Petroni said state and local of-ficials are also working to vacci-nate healthcare workers, first re-sponders and police depart-ments to protect the public andprevent illness from affectingcritical municipal functions.

ries for 2017 has been sex dis-crimination and sexual harass-ment.Barra agreed, and said that the
most important thing GM can dois to create an environmentwhere all can be creative andreach their full potential.“I am chief diversity officer,”
Barra said. “Part of my job is tocreate a workplace of choice thatattracts new talent. It’s unaccept-able not to have standards thatprotect everyone. I want a work-place where people can speak upwithout fear of retaliation. I havechildren who will be entering theworkforce soon, and I want themto have an environment wherethey don’t have to worry aboutthis sort of thing.”It’s important, Barra said, that
people speak up with the expec-tation that they will be believedwhen reporting problems. Theold way of doing things is justnot acceptable.Krebs then asked about the re-
tail future of the auto industry.Barra said that Uber and Lyft
really only represent about 1
percent of the driving done to-day.“Ride sharing only works in
very specific way in places thatare heavily urban,” Barra said.“The owner/driver model of carownership will continue to existfor a long time to come. But theauto industry has to ask it willgrow in the future.“I am confident that dealers
will be able to do that.”Barra was then asked if she
agreed with Bob Lutz’ predictionthat in the future cars will be util-itarian and brands won’t matter.“No,” Barra said. “You have to
recognize that people will bringtheir phones into their cars. Techwill shape the vehicles of the fu-ture, but brands will matter.”The question of SUV/truck
popularity came up. Barra saidthat there will still be a place forsedans.“Our research shows that once
people get into an SUV, it’s hardto get them to go back to asedan,” Barra said. “But there is acore group of people who lovesedans and we will continue toprovide customers with whatthey want.”Krebs asked if General Motors
was hiring new employees. Barrasaid yes. She noted that about 40percent of the workforce hasbeen with the company for lessthan five years.“We need software engineers,”
Barra said. “When we go to Sili-con Valley to recruit, the thingwe hear is that people want towork on something that is cool,something that will go to market.And we’ve learned that there is areal interest in coming to Detroit.People want to go to a placewhere they know they can makea difference. We even had youngpeople who came to Detroit andcreated their own video to showwhat people can do in the city.”Krebs then asked about what
now constitutes GM’s core busi-ness. Barra said that the Chevybrand is very strong in SouthAmerica and that they have astrong dealer network there. Inthe United States, all four of GM’sbrands are doing will and in Chi-na Cadillac is growing as a strongbrand.“Brands are still important,”
Barra said. “Our focus is on that.When we talk about new technol-ogy, we can be talking aboutwhat’s coming in five years, butwe are also talking about what’scoming in two months, what’scoming next year. You will be sur-prised at what you see at the up-coming Detroit auto show.”Barra then took questions
from the audience of reporters.The first was about how in the
old days, GM believed bigger wasalways better, but recently thecompany has left markets andsold off brands.Barra said that’s true, but it’s
vital that the company be an ex-cellent steward of its investors’capital.“The company is and has be-
come disciplined in not onlywhere it sells, but in what seg-ments it invests its money in,”Barra said. “If we are somewherewhere we don’t see a path toprofitability, or a chance for agood return on investment, wewill look for other areas wherewe can grow. We are no longer acompany where we plant a flagand try to be everything toeveryone.“We are still looking for areas
where we can grow and it’s stillimportant to be able to leverageour scale of operations.”Should the opportunity arise
for GM to re-enter the Europeanmarket by being profitable, GMcould do that, Barra said. TheCadillac and Chevrolet brands
are already there, though not inany great numbers currently.General Motors will remain in
the core business of selling carsfor a long time, Barra said. Asnew technologies develop, thatmight change.But the company’s decisions
will be led by customer prefer-ences.When asked about the EV tax
credit, Barra said it’s important.Should credit disappear, it willdefinitely change the equationGeneral Motors uses when mak-ing plans.“The cost of ownership of an
EV is an important part of howcustomers make decisions to buyand EV,” Barra said.“We are still invested in EVs and
will work to drive the cost down.”

ing was built around 1910 andwas first used by the old Stan-dard Electric Automobile Compa-ny.Over the years it housed multi-
ple manufacturers includingLewis Spring and Axle Company,Argo Motor Company, Briscoe
Motor Company and Hackett Mo-tor Company.“There’s so much incredible
automotive history in this build-ing,’’ said Ted O’Dell, the renova-tion project’s leader.The facility eventually became
a storage location for the Jack-son Citizen Patriot.O’Dell said he already has a
dozen cars and an airplane forthe museum, including a ModelA, Model T, a 1913 Cartercar, a1948 Frazer Manhattan and a1966 Mustang. O’Dell said manyof the vehicles were made inMichigan and he’s searching outcars that were specifically manu-factured in Jackson.
“I’m trying to put together asmall collection of cars signifi-cant to Jackson,’’ O’Dell said. “Iwant this to be the permanenthome.’’O’Dell said he’s seeking local,

DETROIT (AP) – An outside cy-ber security firm hired by Uberafter a massive data theft foundno evidence that rider creditcard, bank account or Social Se-curity numbers were down-loaded by two hackers, the com-pany said in a response to de-mands for information from U.S.senators.
But the ride-hailing companydisclosed that in some cases, thehackers got location informationfrom the place where peoplesigned up for Uber, as well asheavily encoded versions of userpasswords.
On Nov. 21, Uber disclosedthat names, email addresses andmobile-phone numbers of 57 mil-lion drivers and riders had beenstolen. In a letter to four Republi-can senators led by Commercecommittee Chairman JohnThune of South Dakota, the com-pany says that Mandiant, the se-curity firm, found 32 million ofthose are outside the U.S. and 25million are inside.
Of the total, 7.7 million aredrivers, mostly in the UnitedStates, and hackers got driver’slicense numbers for 600,000 ofthem, according to the letterfrom new Uber CEO Dara Khos-rowshahi.
The ride-hailing company alsosaid it has not seen evidence offraud or misuse of data taken inthe breach, which lasted morethan a year before being dis-closed. Two employees werefired for not disclosing the theftto “appropriate parties,’’ the let-ter said.
The hackers emailed Uber’sU.S. security team anonymouslyon Nov. 14, 2016 telling themabout the breach and demandinga payment.
Uber tracked down the breach
in private cloud data stored onAmazon’s web services and shutdown access, which camethrough a “compromised creden-tial,’’ the letter said.
The security team agreed topay $100,000 to the hackers foran agreement to delete the data,and later tracked down the hack-ers’ real names. Both signed doc-uments assuring that the stolendata was destroyed, Khosrow-shahi wrote. Team membersfound that the hackers firstgained access on Oct. 13, 2016,and there was no further accessafter Nov. 15, 2016, the lettersaid.
Uber notified the U.S. Attor-ney’s offices in San Franciscoand Manhattan, as well as othergovernment agencies, on Nov. 21of this year, but it’s not clearwhether any criminal investiga-tion has been started. Neither of-fice confirmed nor denied an in-vestigation.
Uber installed additional pro-tections to stop hackers, includ-ing a two-step authentication forone of the services that washacked, the letter said.
In other news, a recent letterfrom the U.S. Attorney's officeconfirms the Justice Departmenthas opened a criminal investiga-tion connected to allegationsthat a former Uber executivestole self-driving car technologyfrom a Google spin-off to help theride-hailing service build roboticvehicles.
The letter unsealed Dec. 13 bya federal judge marks the JusticeDepartment's first acknowledge-ment of the probe.
The criminal investigation wasmentioned in court hearings twoweeks ago, but the Justice De-partment had declined to com-ment.
