62. Overall Project Scope and Context
7The Challenge
XConnect 30, 3MW Wind Turbines to the GridSystem via an offshore sub-station
XEnsure the connection meets the requirementsof the connection agreement
8The Key Connection Requirements
XThe steady state reactive power flow at the Heysham substation connection point shall be unity power factor +/- 5MVAr for active power flow in the range 0 and 90MW into the NGT system
XThe system shall remain stable and connected to the system without tripping for a solid three phase fault or any unbalanced short circuit for a total fault clearance time of up to 140ms

Headline Project Scope1) Design
Conceptual and structural design VKBR System studies, detailed electrical design and equipment supply - AREVA
2) Connection at Heysham The wind farm connects into the Grid via an existing United Utilities circuit within
Heysham switchyard
3) Transmission Cable System 27km of offshore, single 3-core cable 132kV 2.8 km of single circuit, 3 off single-core cable 132kV system
4) Module supply and fitout - Module Builders, Aberdeen Cabins:- Protection and control, 33kV, 132kV, Capacitors, Diesel Generator, HVAC,
Mess/Refuge 132/32kV main and auxiliary transformers
5) Modules and other plant fitted onto Platform Fitted at Barrow, site and main deck supplied by VKBR. Module fixing and inter-
module cabling works performed by installation contractor, Test and Dry Commissioning by AREVA
6) Electrical System commissioning Includes commissioning work on offshore platform

3. Lessons Learnt
24
Lessons Learnt
X System Modelling Inter party confidentiality agreements need to be resolved pre-
contract commencement
XWay-leaves & Land LeasesAll way-leaves and land leases need to be finalised and secured
before construction contract is let
X Design Design Freezes are required after equipment interface reviews
z Hazop reviews
z Windfarm SCADA design that meets substation P&C design cycle
Clarity of Design & Supply responsibilitiesz Use of Division of Responsibility Matrix at contract development
stage - requires sufficient contract lead in time
25
4. Summary
26
Summary
XFirst high voltage offshore substation in the UKA modularised solution - rapid assembly time at load-
out point
Sub-structure (mono-piles) is common with wind turbines (mono-piles) - economy of design
Rapid design, build and install programme
