ONWARDS AND UPWARDS
News from former student Chloe McNeill who
has graduated from the University of Kent,
BScHons Pure Maths first class degree –
congratulations.
REFUGEE WEEK Last week we celebrated Refugee Week, with
students across the school getting involved in
the key message this year of “Our Shared
Future”. The week was all about raising
awareness of what a refugee really is (contrary
to what the media sometimes misleads us to
believe) and why they need our help, as well as
being about highlighting all of the experience,
skills and diversity that refugees can bring to
our society.
As a sixth form, we
ran a variety of
events for the lower
school, such as a
treasure hunt
(pictured left)
based on the lives
of successful
refugees (ranging
from the inventor of
the Mini to a prize-winning journalist to a
Nobel Peace Prize winner, as well as more
widely-known figures such as Einstein) and a
food stall in the hub to give students a taste of
the different countries
and cultures refugees
are coming from. We
also got people to sign
their names on coloured
circles of paper, which
we made into a giant
version of the Refugee
Week logo at the end of
the week.
The sixth form were
also visited by a speaker from Oxfam to tell us
about how we could actually make a difference
by lobbying our MP to take action in reuniting
children and families who've become separated
when fleeing their country.
Overall Refugee Week has been a great
experience. We have seen the school come
together, with students from all year groups
participating in activities, and – at a time when
positive messages about and support for
refugees is essential – we have hopefully spread
the idea of “Our Shared Future” and all the
positive potential that refugees, who are not so
different from us, have.

CHINA CHALLENGE
CAN YOU HOST STUDENTS
FROM SHANGHAI, JULY 2017? We are looking to find families who would be
interested in hosting two students for a week
from the Aurora Foreign Language Middle
School in Shanghai. A contribution will be paid
to help cover costs.
The Year 7 and 8 students will be part of a
group of 12 who will be visiting us later this
term. They will be arriving on the evening of
Saturday 1 July and leaving on the morning of
Saturday 15 July.
If you are able to help accommodate them for a
week during this time we would love to hear
from you. Handover between families can be
arranged at a suitable
time over the middle
weekend of 8 or 9 July.
Please let us know if
you have a preferred
week or if you would
like to do both weeks.
Although not obligatory, if your son/daughter
would like to act as Host on the days when their
guests are in school that would be a great help.
Please email to express your interest and for
further information at: [email protected]

BOYS’ PE Cricket Highlights Year 7 beat Park House. 79-5 76-3. Nathan
Delavere was man of the match for his bowling
and fielding, and he ran out the best batsman
with a direct hit.
Year 8 beat Park House. Park House scored 68
for 5, and St Bart’s scored 69 for 8 with two
balls to spare. Man of the match was Jack Lay
who scored the most runs with the bat in his first
ever innings for school.
Year 9 beat Park House in a very high scoring
match. Park House scored 159 for 7, and
St Bart’s replied with 162 for no loss of wicket.
Man of the match was Alex Jordan who scored
102 not out. Anthony Hennis scored 34 not out.
Sam Mitchell took 3 wickets for 19 runs in 3
overs.
The 1st XI played the ONA in their annual
match against the Old Boys. The school team
put on a very strong bowling display, but
couldn’t quite match the Old Boys’ batting on
the day, with the ONA winning what was a very
enjoyable match played in good spirits at
Falkland Cricket Club. A special mention must
go to Mr McGall and Mr Sharpe who played for
the school team.
Last Friday the 1st XI team played another Old
Boys’ fixture, this time against the West
Berkshire Wanderers. Louis Mortimer hit two
sixes off the last two balls, the school team
winning the match with one ball to spare.
Boys’ Athletics Success
English Schools Track and Field Cup: South
West Regional Finals
The Junior and Intermediate boys’ athletics
teams represented the school in the South West
Regional Finals. The Intermediate team
competed in the B final in Basingstoke (there
were two B finals, the other one taking place in
Exeter), and won the competition - they also
scored more points than the teams competing in
the other final, and came 1st out of 17 schools in
all. The Junior team competed one level higher
in the A final at Millfield School, and finished
a very respectable 6th (this is out of all the
schools in Berkshire, Hampshire, Dorset,
Devon, Cornwall and Somerset).
GIRLS’ PE Rounders
Well done to the Year 10 team, now crowned
area champions.
St Bart’s organised and hosted the Year 10 area
tournament last week. The girls played three
group games winning them all. They beat
St Gabriel’s in the semi-final and Park House in
the final.
Well done to all players.
