For more information on reg-istration sessions for the vari-ous minor baseball associa-tions, go to https://www.baseballpei.ca/2019registrations , or check out the various Baseball PEI social media platforms.
The eleven minor baseball associations on PEI have ei-ther already started or are about to start registration for 2019. It’s an exciting time of the year because it means that baseball is around the corner!
Based on anecdotal conversa-tions, it appears registration for minor baseball is up early in the registration process. However, the final registration session for a few associations will be Saturday, 27 April, so it will not be possible to know for certain until after that time.
Also helping with registration this year is several associations are allowing for online registrations through the RAMP system. Feedback
on that has been overwhelm-ingly positive up to this point.
Some associations have also been more creative in their attempts to get parents to reg-ister their children on time, with the Bedeque and Area Minor Baseball Association having training camps for players at the same time as registration sessions.

At the 11U “A,” 9U and
younger levels, all Baseball PEI
competitions this year will be
using a different baseball. 9U
will be using the Rawlings
TVB850 baseball, while 11U
“A” will be using the Rawlings
R850 baseball. The difference
in these baseballs? The size.
“In the past,” explains Randy
Byrne, executive director of
Baseball PEI, “These catego-
ries used the normal Rawlings
TVB and 65cc balls, which
were the standard 5 ounce, 9
inch baseball. The problem
with that was the baseball
was too large and heavy for
these younger and smaller
players. You would teach
proper throwing mechanics
and fundamentals, but they
couldn’t grip the ball proper-
ly, and it was often too heavy,
and therefore the players
couldn’t use these proper
mechanics when throwing.
The new TVB850 and R850
balls are 4.1 ounces and 8.5
inches. They are smaller,
lighter, easier for younger and
smaller players to grip and
throw properly. It just makes
more sense for them to use .”
These smaller-sized base-
balls are used for younger
ages in Quebec and British
Columbia, and both provin-
cial associations have noted
the increase in proper
throwing and pitching me-
chanics in younger players.
“It just makes common
sense,” adds Byrne.
“A young child wouldn’t be
expected to use a regulation
-sized basketball or football
that’s too big for them. Why
would they use a regulation
baseball that’s too big for
them?
Three of the five 2019 Base-ball PEI Provincial teams

gram - which will be sending the PEI representative to the
Baseball Canada National 16U Girls Championships in
Bedford, NS - will be starting in early May after the com-pletion of the Baseball PEI

Baseball PEI is launching the Provincial 14U/16U Girls Program in May of 2019 or-der to strengthen girls’ base-ball at those ages and field competitive teams at the Baseball Canada National 16U Girls Championships and the Baseball Atlantic 14U Girls Championships. Starting in May, any girl be-tween the ages of 12- and 17-years-old that is interested will be invited to become a member of the Baseball PEI Provincial 14U/16U Girls Program (this is open to girls, whether or not they’ve played competitive baseball in the past, and is open to girls who have played softball or other sports). This group will prac-tice/train at least once a week – at a time that is convenient for the majority of girls and in a selection of locations, large-ly dependent on the geo-graphical makeup of the team – and will be headed up by head coach Randy Byrne,
with assistant coaches Tessa Hood, Mackenzie Pinet, Tyler Johnston and Dave Atkins. From this group, a team will be put together to represent Baseball PEI at the 2019 Baseball Canada National 16U Girls Championships in Bedford, Nova Scotia in Au-gust, and depending on num-bers, potentially a team put together to represent Baseball PEI at the 2019 Baseball At-lantic 14U Girls Champion-ships in Moncton, New Brunswick in September. However, even if a girl doesn’t want to go to Nation-als or Atlantics, but still wants to take part in the pro-gram, they are welcome as well. “Obviously this program will produce the teams that repre-sent PEI at the National and Atlantic events, and the over-all goal is to create the most competitive teams for these events,” says Byrne. “That being said, even if a
girl wanted to improve but didn’t want to commit to go-ing to Nationals, they are in-vited to participate as well and even after the team was picked, they can still continue practising/training with the program. “The number of players tak-ing part will determine how many exhibition games we’ll play, any extra practices or training sessions, or anything like that. However, we are really hoping for a good group of players who want to improve at baseball. We’ve got a really strong and knowl-edgeable coaching staff and all players taking part will learn a lot and grow as play-ers.” The program will go until approximately the start of September. It will be de-signed to conflict as little as possible with the club teams many players will also be playing on.
