Multi-page Tests (20 or 30 Items)

(3 Variations and Answer Keys) Single-page Quick Checks (10 Items)

(3 Variations and Answer Keys)

The Beginning Fraction Concepts Assessment Pack is a collection of paper-and-

pencil tests for assessing understanding of basic fraction concepts. There are

two types of assessments and three variations of each type. Quick Checks are

single-page quizzes that can be given in a few minutes. The Multi-page Tests

include a wider variety of problems and have either 20 or 30 items. Answer

keys are included. The tests were designed to be used with Penguin Fractions:

Exploring the Basics or Penguin Fractions Basic Task Cards, but they can be

used alone as well. The tests are in black and white, but the answer keys have

some color as well as a thin border to distinguish them from the student

pages. The answer keys can be printed in black and white if needed.

All three Quick Checks have 10 items worth 10 points each and can be

used as quick formative assessments to check for understanding. They can

also be used as “exit tickets” to be completed at the end of a class period.

With the Multi-page Tests, you can choose to administer the short version

or the long version of each test. The short version consists of the first two pages and includes 20

items worth 4 points each. For the long version, use all three pages to create a test with 30 items

worth approximately 3 points each.

Suggestions for Using the Assessment Variations

Both the Quick Checks and the Multi-page Tests include three variations: a practice version, and

two assessments (A and B). All versions have similar items, and they can be used in any order. You

may want to use one of the variations as a pretest or send one home for practice the night before

the classroom test. The Beginning Fraction Concepts assessments work perfectly with Response

to Intervention (RTI) and Mastery Learning methods because the pack includes three ready-to-use

variations of the same assessment. Administer one test early in your lesson to find out who needs

extra help. Then use the Penguin Fractions: Exploring the Basics and Penguin Fractions Basic Task

Cards to provide extra practice. Finally, administer a different version of the assessment as a retest

for those who didn’t do well on the first test.

is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the

quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.

3.NF.A.2

Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions

on a number line diagram.

3.NF.A.3

Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by

reasoning about their size.

4th and 5th Grade

None of the 4th or 5th grade fraction standards are completely covered

by the assessments in this product. However, the tests can be used for a

quick check of basic concepts before tackling the more advanced standards

those grades.
