Anthropometryrefers to the measurementof the human individual.
Today, anthropometry plays an important rolein industrialdesign, clothing design, ergonomics andarchitecture where statistical data about the
distribution of body dimensions in the populationare used to optimize products.
Changes in life styles, nutrition and ethniccomposition of populations lead to changes in thedistribution of body dimensions (e.g.the obesity epidemic), and require regularupdating of anthropometric data collections.

Anthropometry isone of the basic tools for the analysis
and development of engineering designrequirements.
With the increased objective of creating moreefficient man-machine systems, the need to
collect extensive anthropometric data becomesmore important.
Consequences of designing systems that do notaccommodate for user populations include user
fatigue, task inefficiency and are generallyinconvenient.

Introduction to Anthropometry
Designing workplaces, equipment, and thephysical environment to fit the characteristicsand capabilities of most people is a complextask.
Examples of these: Sinks that are too low,
handrails that cant be reached, pants that fitthe waist but are too tight/loose around the
hips.Poorly designed equipment leads to injuries.

The study of the human body and its movement, often involving research into measurements
relating to people. It also involves collectingstatistics or measurements relevant to thehuman body, called Anthropometric Data. Thedata is usually displayed as a table of results, diagram or graph. Anthropometric data is usedby designers and architects.
Anthropometric data, are collected and applied todesigns / products, to make them morecomfortable to use. The application of
measurements to products, in order to improvetheir human use, is called Ergonomics.

Anthropometrical data is used to determine thesize, shape and/or form of a product, making it
more comfortable for humans to use and easierto use.
Whatever you are designing, it must fit theperson it is design for (usually called the
customer / client). Adults and children come inall shapes and sizes. We all like or dislike colours, texture, sounds, tastes, flavours, forms andshapes. Consequently, when we design products, factors such as these should be kept in mind.

ERGONOMICS is mainly concerned with workingout measurements, in order to improve the
design of products.

For example: When designing a chair, one of themost important factors is comfort. This is linked
closely to the seating height. Usually the seatingheight is calculated by measuring the mostcomfortable height for the person who is going touse the chair. If the chair is to be used bynumerous people (such as in a Doctors waitingroom), it is important to measure thecomfortable seating height of a range of peopleand then work out the average height. Theaverage seating height is then applied to the
chair.
