STEP 1Attend an Information SessionLearn how to get started at Bates Technical College! Bring your questions, your career choices and any test scores you may have. The information session begins promptly, so please arrive on time to avoid missing important information. You can also set up a follow-up appointment for educational planning. STEP 2Apply for Financial Aid Financial aid is available for qualified students. Apply early to receive full funding. Apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov and sign the free application using your Personal Identification Number (PIN). If you don’t have a PIN, apply online at www.pin.ed.gov and receive your PIN within 2-3 days. After you submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) within four to five days. FAFSA worksheets are available at both the Downtown and South Campus financial aid offices. If you have any questions about your FAFSA, visit www.studentaid.gov or call 1.800.4.FED.AID. STEP 3Complete Entrance TestingThe COMPASS test provides placement information for general education courses, which some career education programs may require. Get a testing schedule for both Downtown and South Campus at the Downtown Assessment Center, M216, or call 253.680.7030. The fee for this test is $25.25. To request accommodations, contact the Disability Support Services (DSS) office at 253.680.7013, (TTY) 253.680.7045.

STEP 4Schedule an appointment with a Career SpecialistA career specialist can help you learn about certificate and degree requirements, support services, college policies and procedures and work with you to develop your educational plan. Your career specialist will also talk with you about general education or basic studies requirements. During this appointment, students will complete an application form and pay the non-refundable $62.70 application fee. To speak with a career specialist, call 253.680.7002. STEP 5Complete the registration and enrollment formYou will complete the registration and enrollment form with your career specialist. Remember, tuition and fees are due at this time. You may pay in the registration office, M210, at the Downtown Campus or in A115 at South Campus. STEP 6Attend a new student orientationThe New Student Orientation provides helpful information that will prepare you for your career education program. The orientation is usually the week before the start of a new quarter. If you cannot attend the orientation, visit www.bates.ctc.edu/MyBates and click on New Student Orientation for the online orientation. Paying for CollegeApply EarlyStudents are encouraged to apply for financial aid as early as possible since pre-qualification may take up to eight weeks from your application submission date. Award of financial aid notification is by mail and begins in the month of July. Financial aid is intended to supplement, not replace, a person’s resources. If your combined resources aren’t sufficient to cover expenses, you may be eligible for financial aid in the form of grants, scholarships, low-interest loans, or work study employment. Information submitted on the financial aid form determines your eligibility for grants, scholarships, work study and low-interest loans. Students should plan to use personal resources to buy books and supplies prior to their first financial aid disbursement.

Eligibility for Financial AidA student is eligible for financial aid if he or she is:• Attending Bates to obtain a degree or certificate• A U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen• Making satisfactory progress in a program of study, as defined by the institution’s satisfactory progress criteria• Not in default on any previous

student loans or owing a refund on any grant

• Registered for the draft with Selective Service, if required by law • A high school graduate, a GED completer, or earn passing scores

on the COMPASS exam

College’s financial aid office provides a list that includes many lending

institutions (www.bates.ctc.edu/financialaid). The

college does not have a preferred lender list nor does it restrict students to any particular lender.

We encourage each student and/or parent borrower to research and make an informed

lender choice. Bates Technical College does

not participate in revenue sharing with any lender nor

does it have an agreement for referrals with any lending

The Bates Technical College Foundation awards merit and financial need-based scholarships to students every quarter through an online scholarship application process. The Foundation makes applications available approximately three months prior to the start of each quarter. The summer quarter scholarship application deadline has already passed, but scholarships are still available for 2010-2011. Individual awards range from $100 to $1,000 per quarter.

Who is eligible to apply for scholarships through the Bates Foundation? All Bates students enrolled in career education programs are eligible to apply for scholarships. Some scholarships are open to all students in any program, while other scholarships are limited to students in specific programs. Please read each scholarship announcement to determine eligibility.

Can I apply for a scholarship even if I receive financial aid? Yes. We encourage students to apply for scholarships regardless of whether they receive financial aid or not. But please keep in mind that receiving a scholarship may affect your financial aid package. You should consult with the financial aid office if you have specific questions.

Can I apply for a scholarship even if I received one for a previous quarter? Yes. We encourage students to apply for scholarships each quarter.

I already receive funding for my tuition. Why should I apply for a scholarship? Some scholarships provide funding for books, tools or supplies in addition to your tuition.

Christin Sexton Driven toward success A new student this school year, Christin Sexton has already become a champion for Bates.

During Legislative Cookie Day in January, an annual event where a handful of Bates students meet with legislators to tell their stories, Christin practiced proactive student advocacy.

“I wanted to put a face on education and represent Bates,” says Christin, a Diesel and Heavy Equipment Mechanic student. “I wanted to show our legislators what education means to me and tell my own personal story, and hopefully it would resonate with them.”

Christin, a recipient of two scholarships, will also volunteer at this year’s Bates Foundation signature fundraiser, Bates Sizzles. “I’m looking forward to being a presence, to show my support for the foundation and do what I can to help,” he says. “The more funding the foundation receives, the better able they are to help students now and in the future, and I want to be a part of that.”

He knows the value of a scholarship. Christin received a $250 emergency scholarship earlier this year to help pay for his books. “Without that funding, I would not have been able to get the necessary textbooks and basic school supplies I need to successfully proceed with my schooling,” he says. “The foundation’s funding of this scholarship made my goals and dreams for my education a reality.”

Currently enrolled in the electrical portion of the diesel program, Christin will graduate with an associate of technology degree next year. He hopes to land a job with an oil drilling company.

Debbie LeeIn her own wordsAfter a lay off from my previous job after 16 years, I felt unprepared to enter the job market. I felt I couldn’t do anything right and was too scared to even try. After talking with family and friends, in March of 2009, I finally got up the nerve to enroll at Bates Technical College in the Legal Office Assistant program. Because I wanted a career, not just a job. It has been a tough struggle juggling school and family life. I want my three children to realize that they can accomplish anything they put their mind to and that they know by example how to balance school with family obligations and to succeed at both. Going to Bates has been the best experience of my life. I am not only learning from books, but from my fellow students. Bates is a widely diversified school, and I am enjoying learning how to communicate with people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. I am an advocate for children and I am striving to get good grades so that when I graduate in December, I can work in the attorney general’s office or a law firm that specializes in family law. My passion is to be able to help minors who cannot help themselves.

General EducationTo satisfy degree and certificate requirements, students need to complete certain general education (GE) classes. General education classes are open to career education students, high school students and others pursuing college credit or preparatory goals and include college-level and college-preparatory courses. COMPASS scores and the course work help determine pre-requisites you need to complete. Some students may need to build basic skills in mathematics, reading or writing before taking a general education course.

Associate degrees and certificates of competency require completion of a specific number and distribution of pre-college and college-level GE classes. Requirements vary depending upon the career education program, the credential, and the track a student chooses to pursue. Each career education program has a unique delivery plan that identifies the quarters in which students should take general education classes.

Ryan Gonzales and Corey JohnsonA strong foundationRyan Gonzales (pictured above) and Corey Johnson became friends in the Facilities Maintenance Technical High School program. In May, they will both graduate with an Associate of Technology Degree in Facilities Maintenance Engineer, a Washington State High School Diploma and a boiler certification. Ryan, 18, started at Bates in September 2008. He had 3.8 grade point average from Washington High School but wanted more than the typical high school experience. “Mostly I was looking to get ahead because high school was really easy,” says Ryan. “And it’s cheaper to do college as a part of my technical high school program than to wait until later.” Corey Johnson, who’s almost 18, is a former Wilson High School student. “I came to Bates because I was bored at high school and the whole high school experience wasn’t for me,” says Corey. “I chose facilities maintenance because it was the only program that had any type of plumbing.” Corey plans to continue his education at Tacoma Community College to get his associates of arts degree in business. He plans to open his own grounds keeping, landscape and maintenance business. “These are the best two high school students I have ever had the pleasure of teaching—and I taught high school for a year and a half,” says Dale Trombley, facilities maintenance engineer instructor. “They are great kids, and they are committed to their education.”

Sean TidwellPrecision drivenMachinist Instructor Barry Young calls Sean Tidwell one of the shining stars in the Machinist program. “Sean is the kind of student every instructor hopes for,” says Barry. “Mr. Tidwell has excelled here and his quality work shows it.”

Sean, originally from Atlanta, Ga., is an Army veteran who was injured in Iraq in 2005. “When I came back, it was troubling times adjusting,” he says. “I decided I needed to go out and do something with my life.”

In September 2008, Sean enrolled at Bates. He was a student in the Electrical Power and Process Automation program, but during a break, he discovered the machine shop. “I saw people working on machines, doing different things.” He was drawn to the hands-on aspect of the program, so he talked with the instructor to learn more.

Sean, who wants to pursue a job as a maintenance machinist, says Bates was the best fit for him. “The two instructors [Bob Storrar and Young] go out of their way for their students. Both constantly provide us with job leads and seek placement for us as apprentices.”

Sean hopes to graduate with his associate of technology degree in 2010.

Tonya CrockettSmiling brighterTwo years ago, Tonya Crockett never expected to be back in school. But today, the 40-year-old is only months away from getting her certificate in dental assisting. “I came to Bates to get an education. I was in the middle of a divorce and was a stay-at-home mother of four for 10 plus years,” she says. “I needed to support my children and knew without an education, I wouldn’t be able to find a decent job.” Tonya moved herself and her four kids in with her mother and step father and got Pell grants to afford school. “After some research, a tour of Bates’ campus, and family support, I signed up to begin my career. I was nervous at first but realized that we all are the same no matter how old we are. I remember after I completed my first quarter, my oldest son, who is 15, said to me, ‘I’m so proud of you, mom.’ It was one of my most memorable moments.” As a part of the program, Tonya will intern at the Veteran’s Administration Dental Clinic in Lakewood starting this month until July 21, when she completes the program. “I can’t wait to start a dental assisting job! I often recommend this school to family and friends. Every time they ask how school is going, I tell them, ‘School is great! You should go, too!’” .

Iris Silber and Peter Stallone2010 All-Washington Academic TeamThe All-Washington Academic Team program recognizes and honors our state’s finest higher education students.

Bates’ team members Iris Silber and Peter Stallone are also nominated for the 2010 All-USA Academic Team. Officials from Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for students of two-year colleges, will select students for the All-USA team.

Iris, an Administrative Office Assistant graduate, struggled to support herself after her 21-year marriage ended. She realized she lacked necessary skills to compete in the workforce.

Bates’ emphasis on diversity and the individual needs of the student attracted Iris, who works in the IT department and volunteered for the Associated Student Government as a club coordinator as a student. She hopes to land a job in the information technology field.

Peter, who is nearing completion of an associate degree in Wireless Voice and Data Communications, first came to Bates in 1985 to learn computers. He landed a job with Pierce County as an information analyst, and left to pursue philanthropic work overseas.

He then worked as a waterproofing specialist for a construction company, but when the economy soured, he decided to follow his first love: computers. The first in his family to earn a college degree, Peter enrolled in Bates. Following graduation, he plans to pursue work as a network administrator.

Adult Basic EducationIf you need to satisfy some basic education requirements to continue on your career path, Bates can help.

Our Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Education Development (GED) preparation classes help those who may or may not have a high school diploma improve mathematics, reading and writing skills.

ABE provides a strong general education foundation to adults so they can benefit from technical education and gain job-specific skills. In many cases, students can start career education programs while also taking ABE classes.

GED preparation classes help students who are planning to take the required five tests. Bates offers ABE and GED day and evening classes with twice quarterly start dates at Bates and our affiliated Tacoma locations.

Our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes help adults learn to use the English language in their education, work and daily activities.

Bates offers day and evening ESL classes in speaking, listening, reading and writing. In some cases, students can start career education programs while also taking ESL classes. Twice quarterly start dates are available.

General Education

Donald ShorterProducing a dreamA child of a pastor, Donald Shorter, Jr. grew up in the church. At age 13, he began to volunteer in the church’s media department running video cameras, sparking his interest in the industry.

“My father is a Bates alumnus, and he encouraged me to attend Bates because of its emphasis on hands-on training,” says Donald.

While Donald volunteered at his church, he noticed the success of another volunteer and Bates graduate, Rick Swazer, who currently works for a major Seattle television station.

“That encouraged me even more to enroll in Bates’ Broadcasting and Video Production program,” he says. Donald enrolled in February 2008, and pretty soon, he was immersed in countless hands-on experiences.

“I went on location shoots to capture sporting events at Franklin Pierce High School. I helped set up the Master Control Operation for CollegeVision, I helped with in-studio shoots with artists—these were all great real-world learning experiences,” boasts Donald.

His time in the program helped him see first-hand the day-to-day responsibilities of the industry. Because of his instructors’ industry connections, Donald was able to get a job in this highly competitive field. In March, he began working as a master control operator at Q13, the Fox affiliate.

Donald, whose career goal is to own and operate a production house, credits Bates with getting him the experience and education he needs to be successful. “My program really mimicked the industry,” he says.

He will graduate in June with a certificate in Broadcasting and Video Production.

Tuition Refund PolicyA student who has paid tuition before the quarter starts but is unable to attend the class may receive a full tuition refund. After the first day of class, Bates grants refunds as follows:

• From the 1st to the 5th calendar day of class - 80%• From the 6th day to the 15th day calendar day - 40%• After the 15th calendar day there is no refund

The tuition refund policy applies to all students in state-supported programs. It is the student’s responsibility to complete a withdrawal form and submit it to the registration office. The date the withdrawal is received will be used for calculating refunds.

Tami Hauptmann Building a new lifeTami Hauptmann hit rock bottom four years ago. She went to prison as a result of a drug conviction and had nowhere to turn.

Soon, she was living at the New Phoebe House Association, a transitional shelter for women and children. “The New Phoebe House helped guide me onto the right road,” says Tami, a Sumner native.

Tami believes at that point in time God delivered her from her addiction. “He is the one who turned my life around, not me,” says Tami. She was eager to get into school so she could become a better role model for her kids. “Through various assessments, the Educational Opportunity Center helped me choose the Electronic Engineering Technician program at Bates,” says Tami.

She met with career specialist Monica Schumaker and instructor Stan Reed. She began classes in 2009. “I liked that the program was already mapped out for me,” she says. “Monica is easy to talk to, and Stan encourages me when I’m feeling discouraged and overwhelmed.”

Because of Bates’ on-site daycare facilities, Tami can visit her two-and-a-half-year-old twins throughout the day. “The daycare is really great,” she says. “It’s easy to bring them to school with me, drop them off and run to class. Having them here on campus makes it easier for me to spend more quality time with them.”

Tami’s career goal is to become an electrical engineer. She is on target to graduate next year with a certificate and an associate of technology.
