Welcome to summer semester at Wallace State Community College.Wallace State students are interested in living lives less ordinary, and we are committedto empowering them.

We serve high school students through dual enrollment, early college enrollment, tech prep programs, and our on-campus FastTrack Academy. We offer one of the most comprehensive arrays of academic, health science and technical programs in thenation, and students complete our programs with great potential, well prepared for careers or seamless transfer to a university.

Wallace State has a record of producing outstanding scholars, including Jack Kent Cooke and New Century scholars, and upontransfer to a university our students meet or exceed the performance of students who began there. Those students directlyentering a technical or health career have excellent licensure and job placement rates.

The new Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts complements Wallace Stateʼs support of the arts and will be a featuredlocation during our Year of the Arts events on campus this year. The Burrow Center is just one of many state-of-the-art, andgreen, learning environments on campus. A new Interactive Digital Center will allow our students to train in virtual reality.Student activities, outstanding athletic programs, intramurals, clubs and organizations, service learning and volunteeropportunities make the campus feel like a community. Educational offerings are also available totally online so that studentscan learn anytime, anywhere.

ADA Accommodations - All students receiving servicesthrough the ADA Office need to make an appointment orstop by to discuss the classes and accommodationsneeded for Summer Semester. All students wanting to uti-lize their accommodation for priority registration must makethe appointment and have documentation on file beforeApril 21. The WSCC ADA Office publishes a handbookoutlining the policies and procedures required for acquiringacademic accommodations. Transitional Learning Division - The Transitional LearningDivision’s primary responsibility is to make the transitionfrom high school to college as easy as possible for stu-dents. Transitional Learning classes are designed to assiststudents in developing academic competencies necessaryfor success in college. Orientation 103, Reading 083, Eng-lish 092 and 093, and Math 090 are found within this divi-sion. Admissions Policy

Wallace State Community College is an open admissions institu-tion. All students who have earned a high school diploma or GEDare eligible for admission. In addition to an application for admis-sion, students are required to supply the College with an officialcopy of their high school transcript or official copy of their GEDscores. Students transferring from another college must submit anadmissions application and an official copy of their transcript(s)from each college they have attended. Transient students mustsubmit a transient letter from their home institution stating thecourses they will be allowed to take in addition to an application foradmission.

Graduates from a non-accredited high school with a diplomademonstrating successful completion of a course of study on thesecondary level based upon the Carnegie units required by thestate education agency at the time of the award (currently 24) andminimum ACT score of 16 or the equivalent SAT score of 790 areeligible for admission. If the above requirements are not met, thestudent must take a GED test.

Special requirements may apply to International Students seekingadmission. Students must submit official transcripts, an I-20 Form,TOEFL scores, declaration of responsibility statement, proof of in-

surance, and all appropriate admissions forms. Further informa-tion is available by contacting the Wallace State Admissions Officeor viewing the WSCC Catalog online.

Accelerated high school students who have completed the tenthgrade, have a cumulative “B” average, and are recommended bythe local principal may enroll at Wallace State only in postsec-ondary courses for which high school prerequisites have beencompleted. Exceptions may apply for students documented as“gifted and talented” according to the standards included in theState Plan for Exceptional Children and Youth.

The Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit High School program allows eligi-ble high school students to enroll in college classes concurrentlywith high school classes, either on the college campus or at thehigh school, and receive both high school and college credit. Thestudent must be in grade 10, 11 or 12, have a “B” average; and ob-tain written approval of the Principal and Superintendent.

Non-Credit students who enroll exclusively in non-credit coursesmay be granted admission without a minimum score on the ACT orSAT, a GED Certificate, or transcripts from a high school or col-lege.

Getting Started at Wallace State

1 ADMISSIONS: Submit a completed and signed applicationfor admission to the WSCC Admissions Office or apply onlineat www.wallacestate.edu. Remember to send your transcripts and provide photo identification.

TESTING: All students must complete COMPASS Placement Tests in English, reading, and mathematics priorto registering for classes. Testing is waived for those who present recent ACT scores (or SAT equivalent) of 20 on the

ORIENTATION: All students are strongly encouraged to attend a LIONS’ Pride Information Session. Incoming freshmen are required to register for an orientation course(unless exempt). Contact the ACTION Center at 256/352-8040 (JBC 8th floor) for more information. TheWSCC Office of Student Recruiting (JBC 11th floor) is avail-able to provide college information and schedule campustours. Call 256/352-8031 for more information.

ACADEMIC ADVISING: Advisors are available to assist students in choosing a course of study, developing a degreeplan, and registering for classes. Visit the ACTION Center onthe 8th floor of the Bailey Center to see an advisor or contactyour assigned faculty advisor.

6 REGISTRATION: Students can register online at www.wallacestate.edu if PIN has been activated or in personin the Bailey Center. You must see your advisor to have yourPIN activated. For registration dates and times, consult the

7 FEE PAYMENT: Registration is not complete until all tuitionand fees are paid. Fees may be paid online, by mail, or inperson at the WSCC Cashier’s Office. Wallace State offers a wide array online and hybrid (partially online, partially on campus) classes to fit your scheduleand your needs. These classes are noted in the summer course listing beginning on p. 11. Several complete programs of study are also available in a fully online or online/hybrid format including Computer Science (Program-ming, Software Support/Help Desk, Internet/Networking Technology), Health Information Technology (Health Informa-tion Technician, Medical Transcription, Medical Coding), Gerontology, Pharmacy Technology, Associate inArts/Science. Financial Aid

Financial Aid Announcements - Summer2010Students receiving financial aid should read the followinginformation carefully.

APPLY EARLY • Students applying for financial aid shouldapply at least two (2) months before the next semester begins.Applying early will help ensure a timely response to federalguidelines and will allow for any unforeseen problems/situa-tions that might occur. Applying early will also help students toavoid potential long lines or waits.

BOOKSTORE CHARGES • If Pell Awards exceed the amountof tuition and fees owed, students may charge books and sup-plies on their Pell accounts at the WSCC Bookstore. Theseaccounts will be open for charges on May 10.

DISTANCE EDUCATION • Students are responsible for log-ging in and meeting orientation requirements for all online andvideo classes. Pell funds will not be distributed until atten-dance is verified.

BALANCE CHECKS • Per federal guidelines, attendancemust be verified before balance checks can be distributed.Students must attend ALL CLASSES before Pell and loanfunds will be distributed. Students’ balance checks willnot be processed until all holds are cleared. Students willnot receive refunds on classes until after the class hashad at least one class meeting. (Pell distribution datesmay be adjusted for students who are registered for MiniTerm II classes). If you are registered for classes that beginlater than May 25, your balance check may be disbursed at alater date. You must attend classes prior to any funds beingdistributed for a particular class.

Pell Grant balance checks will be distributed in the StudentCenter lobby on Monday, June 7 from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.Beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 8, balance checkswill be available in the Cashier’s Office.

Stafford Loan balance checks are scheduled to be distributedin the Student Center lobby on Thursday, June 24 from 8:00a.m. until 4:00 p.m. After June 24, balance checks will beavailable in the Cashier’s Office.

Students must present picture ID to pick up checks. Avalid state driver’s license will suffice.

Withdrawal from all classes will result in Pell overpayment andfuture Pell payments for WSCC or any other college will ceaseuntil the overpayment is repaid. Students will be placed onhold for registration and release of transcripts until the fundsare repaid.

STUDENTS ON PRIVATE SCHOLARSHIPS • The WSCC Fi-nancial Aid Office requests that all students on private fundedscholarships contact the Financial Aid Office three (3) weeksprior to registration to ensure that all paperwork is complete.

REMEMBER • Students must re-file for Pell Grants for everyacademic year (Fall-Summer). Pell Grants and Loans are ap-plicable for two of the three semesters in any academic year.The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is avail-able in the Financial Aid Office or online at www.fafsa.gov. Stu-dents applying for 2010-2011 Pell Grants must complete theforms with 2009 tax data. You may apply for Federal StudentAid online at www.fafsa.gov or complete a paper applicationand mail it to the federal government. Official transcripts arerequired from all institutions attended, whether or not grades orcourses are to be used. For Financial Aid purposes, ALL tran-scripts must be mailed directly from the sending institution, in-cluding non-accredited schools, and evaluated. Beforeregistering, students’ files must be complete in both FinancialAid (including in-house paperwork) and Admissions to receiveaward. Most students will have to produce appropriate tax re-turns for themselves or supporting parents. .

Wallace State Bookstore Textbook Refund Policy • A student who has purchased returnable books from the col-

lege bookstore and returns the books in new condition by the end of the third week of the semester will be refunded the full pur-chase price assuming the following conditions are met:1. Everyone must have a receipt.2. Everyone must present a valid picture ID.3. Books must be in new/unused condition. If book was sold in shrink wrap, it must be returned in shrink wrap.4. Refunds will not be given for supplies or reference books and materials.5. If purchase was made with a check, you must wait 10 business days before requesting a refund.

A student who has purchased returnable books from the college bookstore and returns the books in used condition by the end ofthe third week of the semester will be refunded 50% of the full purchase price. A book is determined to be in “used” condition ifthe shrink wrap has been removed, or has marks, erasures, or highlights. Regardless of condition, all books must include any

cd or access code that was included with the book. Contact the WSCC Bookstore at 256/352-8100 for more information.

Administrative Fee: An administrative fee not to exceed 5% of tuition and otherinstitutional charges of $100, whichever is smaller, shall be assessed for eachwithdrawal within the period beginning the first day of class and ending at the endof the third week of class.

Refund for partial withdrawal: Students who do not completely withdraw fromthe college but drop a class during the regular drop/add period will be refundedthe difference in tuition paid and the tuition rate applicable to the reduced numberof hours, including fees appropriate to the classes dropped. There will be no re-fund to a student who partially withdraws after the official drop/add period hasended.

Wallace State does not give cash refunds: Students must complete aDrop/Add Form in the Admissions Office, take it to the Cashier’s Office and com-plete a Refund Request Form. Under normal circumstances, refund checks areissued weekly and mailed to the student. Refer to current academic calendar fordrop/add and withdrawal deadlines.

NOTE: The first $80 for full-time and first $59 for part-time students is non-re-fundable unless the class is cancelled by the college. Insurance fees are non-re-fundable. A 5% administrative fee for complete withdrawals will be charged.

1. GETTING STARTED: See your academic advisor to activate your PIN. You must not be on academic probation or have any outstanding fees or holds.

2. GO ONLINE: Visit www.wallacestate.edu and click on the myWallaceState link to access your student information. Click on Student Resources to log in.

3. LOGIN SCREEN: Enter your WSCC assigned student number. Enter your PIN number. Press Login to continue. You are encouraged to change your PIN for privacy and security purposes.

4. CLICK ON THE PRE-REGISTRATION OPTION: To add or drop a course, type the course call number as printed in the schedule or use the Select Course button to search the schedule. Once you find the call number, click PUSH and it will automatically insert the call number for you. Click the Add/Drop Course button to add the course to your listing. To view your schedule, scroll to the bottom of the page. To drop a course you have added, click the Click to Drop button to the right of the course. Continue until your course schedule is complete.

5. COMPLETE REGISTRATION: Once your schedule is complete, click the Complete Registration button. You will

see a screen that displays tuition charges for the schedule you have chosen. Available financial aid coverage will also be shown. To complete the entire registration process, you must pay the amount in the Cash Due column by the dates published by WSCC. Failure to do so will result in removal from class. Classes can only be dropped online during the drop/add period. If registration has ended, you must withdraw from classes in person in the Admissions Office.

6. PAYMENT: If you plan to pay your tuition and fees by check, click the Print Pre-Registration Mailer button. This will print a copy of your schedule, plus all tuition and fees owed. Follow the directions on the mailer and send a check for the amount shown to WSCC. You may pay online with Discover, American Express, Visa or Mastercard or in person during regular business hours at the WSCC Cashier’s Office by check, cash or credit card.

7. REMEMBER: To ensure complete registration, full payment must be received by the posted payment dead-lines. If you do not settle your account by the date posted in the current semester schedule, your schedule will be deleted. Please check your schedule for accuracy.
