Editorial

The broadsheets are bleak, the tabloids ensure us

we’re all going to die of chronic terrorism and the

news at ten promises a world of fire and brimstone,

all looked over by a soot cloud in the shape of Kerry

Katonas face. Yet, somehow, an entire city has

grouped together, taken their own time and asked

kindly for help in putting on an whole month of

top notch entertainment to help raise awareness,

money, and a smile for people who they will most

likely never meet. So, thank you indeed for buying

this month’s Burp for £1, you can read this edition

knowing you’ve help put a little bit of happiness

into someone’s life.

Oxjam is Oxfam’s month long music festival with

hundreds of events around the country organised

by volunteers who know and love their local music

scene. In Bath we’re hoping to raise £3,000 which

is enough to feed 250 families in the current East

Africa food crisis for 2 weeks. Find out more at www.

facebook.com/oxjam.bath or twitter: @oxjambath.

Local Music, Global Impact

Special thanks to John Hipperson for burning this

THE BATH BURP & OXJAM ART AUCTION:

22nd

Oct. - 19th

Nov.

Raising money for OXFAM – and there’s NO RESERVE

All supported by generous local artists

The Bath Burp are hosting an ART AUCTION that will be

raising money for OXFAM.  A number of local artists

have VERY KINDLY donated a piece of their artwork,

which will all be exhibited at THE ROYAL OAK (Lower

Bristol Rd, Bath) from the 22nd October until the

19th November. It’s a silent auction, so you place

your bid at the bar.

All the artwork in this month’s issue is included in

the auction - although here it’s all black and white

and not to scale. You can see colour versions at

www.thebathburp.co.uk, or you can see the real

things (the best way) on display at the pub.

Kalindi School lies about 10km from the main road in

the east of Zambia. A place where main road means a

mix of dirt track, quagmire, pot holes and ponds. A

place where 80% of the population live on less than

$2 a day.

Opening the car door we’re greeted by the sound of

children singing. It’s an inspiring sound. Over

the chorus their teacher Rachel introduces herself

and tells her story.

Rachel

She was a teacher in her youth but gave up when she

married. Just over 10 years ago, her husband passed

away and the community asked her to once more help

educate their children. So, under the shade of a

tree, Rachel began to teach.

Her school grew and came to the attention of a

local organisation, ZEDAO (the Zambia Education

Development & Advocacy Organisation). Using Oxfam

funds, they built a water pump, toilets, and a school

block with two basic classrooms and a library. They

stocked the library. They worked with the Parent

Community School Committee, enabling them to demand

more support from the government.

And so, the demand for Rachel’s school increased!

Now more than 375 pupils attend Kalindi. With 50

pupils to a class, Rachel and the one other teacher

must work three shifts of lessons to cover everyone.

By law primary education in Zambia is free. The

government are supposed to provide a range of items,

including chalk, but too little comes, or it doesn’t

arrive at all. They’re also supposed to provide

the community school grant, but often, not all of

this arrives at the school. ZEDAO’s work helping

the community understand what they are entitled to

and how to demand it, is as vital as the provision

of books. The school clearly still needs support

in improving facilities – students, teachers

and parents said their one wish was for another

classroom block. But Kalindi also shows the need to

raise awareness among local people of government

failings and use popular support to bring them to

account. Oxfam’s money is changing the lives of the

children who come to this school today and giving

their parents the tools to change the system for

generations to come. This is the only way to achieve

long term change.

THE CAUGHT RAIN DROP

I caught a rain drop today;

Held it; showed it the world;

Told it about you; it grew

Greyer; sadder; sunk lower

In my palm; a cloud grew;

Flew; left my hand; and

Ran after you.

A GENTLE WARNING

Hello yellow;

Don’t stand to near that

Red; you’ll only end up

Orange.

IT WAS . . .

It

Was

Just like playing;

Two naked bits of the world

Exploring each other’s worlds;

You looked at every part of me

As though you had never seen

Skin; like you were studying

Intently, as if to make

A wax work;

And

I

Wasn’t

Scared; hands enclosing

My breasts; moths in your

Palms; holding my frame

Like a fractured glass vessel

About to break; and I broke;

For you; for me; and watching

You break; made me hum

All the way

to work.

Train

The baby wails,

The phone rings,

A person talks on and on.

The coffee’s spilt,

The announcements come,

The countryside rattles by.

The noise increases,

The headache grows,

And where’s that still small voice?

You close your eyes,

Stare out the window,

Trying to drown out the noise of the world.

You ask for that peace,

So freely given,

And your heart grows still.

The noise around you dies down,

The lady stops talking,

The baby gurgles.

You can hear that still small voice,

And all is right with the world.

Faces in the crowd

The people come,

The people go,

And nobody stops to ask

Who they are and what they do,

If all this is a mask.

As they hurry by,

Head down,

Enclosed in their own little worlds,

I watch

Longing

Wishing they would let Me in,

Open up and experience My love.

I see their faces in the crowd,

Their hearts, so calloused and dry,

Living in a world of pain

That they can’t see and understand,

With Me, reaching out,

Wanting them to take My hand.
