The used light commercial market is an unpredictable

thing these days. Not everyone is looking

for or can afford a new or late model ute.

In fact, many buyers simply want a reliable ute that they can use as a workhorse for a few years before moving up to a newer model.

It’s fi nding a good one at the right price that proves to be the challenge. Well look no

further because this week, Bay Driver found one that is more than worth a look at Te Puke South Autos, just on the edge of Te Puke township, heading south.

It’s a year 2000 Toyota Hilux Flatdeck, two-wheel-drive, two litre petrol model with fi ve speed, fl oor change transmission. Priced at $9,990, it’s in darn good nick and with the renowned Toyota motor, should give trouble-free motoring for years.

Inside the cab, you’ll fi nd that the upholstery is clean and the air conditioning works a treat. There is also a driver’s airbag and a CD stereo and power steering to make things a bit easier. The fl at deck has drop sides with a tow bar

incorporated and is in very good condition. The tyres have plenty of life left in them too.

This ute would fi t the bill for any tradesman, handyman, gardener, orchard or farm worker or family looking for a vehicle that they can throw the motocross bikes on the back of and take off for the day. There’s nothing to spend on it either – just buy it, jump in and put it straight to work.

We all know how hard it is to fi nd a tidy ute for under $10,000 now, so anyone in the market should get over to see Scott at Te Puke South Autos quick smart.

And if you’re unlucky enough to miss out on this Hilux, there are more fl at deck and well side utes on the yard that might be of interest.

Check it out this weekend on the corner of Jellicoe and King Streets, Te Puke, open Monday to Saturday or phone Scott for more information (see ad below).

When it comes to re-engineering their own cars in order to make the best better, Mazda engineers prove again and again that they

are the masters.A good example of this is the 20 years of

success enjoyed with the MX5 sports car – success that came from constantly re-visiting each model, taking it apart, honing down its weight and looking at how it could be built better each time. And, all the while, making sure that they kept their eye on what it was that drew motorists to the machine in the fi rst place; good design, clever engineering, performance and personality.

The same can be said for Mazda’s 3 Series in its new SKYACTIV guise.

Just as the MX5 was driven by the Jinba Ittai or ‘horse and rider’ philosophy to deliver outstanding handling, the SKYAC-TIV Technology approach to the 3 Series aims to ensure longer life for petrol engines.

Mazda’s long-held belief is that there is plenty of life left yet in the petrol engine and they are honing theirs to deliver optimal economy without compromising on

performance. If anything, they are enhanc-ing it, while adopting a sustainable ‘Zoom Zoom’ vision for the future of motoring.

Remarkable economySo to the new SKYACTIV engine, which

embodies a cluster of technologies and has the Mazda 3’s two litre engine at its heart. It delivers 15 per cent more torque than before while sipping 15 per cent less petrol – a very attractive equation indeed.

Chrissie Donaldson, Mazda sales manager at Ultimate Motor Group, Mount Maun-ganui, achieved a remarkable 4.5L/100km consumption driving on the open road the other week, while Mazda New Zealand claims 6.2L/100km as the average combined economy rating.

This is the sort of result you might expect from small brother, the Mazda 2 and proof that the technology is more than simple ‘greenwashing’ – it represents a massive 25 per cent in fuel savings over the previous 3 Series engine.

We’re sure that the excellent economy fi gures are also helped by some smart valve timing, lightweight body materials and an innovative exhaust system. The new Mazda 3 also fea-tures an ‘-Stop’system that neatly switches the

engine off at the lights. Pistons are positioned for a quick restart and in the time it takes

to get your foot from the brake to the accelerator, things are fi ring again. It

is surprisingly easy to get used to and not at all disconcerting.

Delivering all this eco-nomical, sustainable power

to the road is a six speed auto transmission. It shifts easily in response to rev rises with excellent delivery to the front wheels. It also man-

ages to achieve a claimed 7 per cent saving in fuel con-

sumption over typical automatic transmissions.

Improved performanceEncasing all this technology is the

new Mazda3 SKYACTIV body and chassis. The body levers off Mazda’s long experience in lightweight engineering – well-honed with their obsession to keep reducing the MX5’s body weight during two decades. Lying beneath the beautifully manicured exterior fi nish is a chassis with new generation, high tensile strength steel. It sits on a re-designed suspension and steering system and it is very noticeable once you get behind the wheel. It defi nitely feels like the introduction of SKYACTIV has lifted the 3’s performance. It feels perkier through the mid-rev range and is well equipped to hold its own in high speed overtaking on the open road.

It would be fair to say that this new model has a more direct, nimble feel to it than the previous one. That legendary Mazda handling is still there to enjoy, but without compromis-ing the ride quality, while noise levels, which had drawn a few niggles in the past, are now far more muted, regardless of road surface.

Still turning headsMazda has also avoided mucking around

too much with the 3’s looks this time. The reasoning might be that if it’s popular, why change it and the Mazda 3 was New Zealand and Australia’s top selling model for August this year. It obviously still has massive ‘pull-ing power’ in its current styling.

The same approach has been applied to the interior. It continues the well thought-out approach that Mazda achieved fi rst time off the blocks with this model. Switchgear is

nicely laid out in a sensible manner, the sur-faces include pleasant soft touch plastics and everything sits where you need it to be.

Even the steering wheel, with its multiple remote controls, makes complete sense and programming your phone to Bluetooth is as simple as talking to the voice activated system – which does not seem to struggle one bit with fading Kiwi consonants.

Rear leg room is surprisingly good, capable of taking a couple of six footers and the boot space can increase signifi cantly with the 60:40 split seats.

On refl ection, it is reassuring to see that, rather than branching off into niche technol-ogy like hybrid/electric cars, Mazda has made a public commitment to squeezing more performance and economy out of its petrol-powered engine instead.

The new SKYACTIV technology looks set to go a long way towards achieving that goal. It is a great testimony to a company that brings passion and engineering excellence to all its vehicles – and does it with enviable fl air and appeal. This exciting new Mazda 3 version is no exception to that.

Mazda have done little to change the stylish exterior of the new GSE SKYACTIV – all the best changes are under the bonnet.

The interior is as thoughtfully laid-out as always, with all controls easy to use and intuitive.

As it has done for the last six years, the Mazda 3 GSE still stands

out from the hatch crowd.

Since it was founded in 1903, the Ford Motor Company has brought us some of the worlds most recognisable car names. In America, the Mustang is just one of these, while in Australasia,

there has been none more popular than the mighty Ford Falcon.

People who appreciate the ‘old classics’ have the chance to view many great American models at the Mothers All-USA Car Day on Sunday, November 27, from 9am to 3pm. Held

at the Wharepai Domain, this annual event is hosted by the BOP Mustang Owners Club and is always a great fun day out for young and old alike.

For many it’s the array of new Ford models rolling off the production line into Ultimate Motor Group in Mount Maunganui, that is grabbing all the attention.

In the last two months, Ford has launched three new models; first, the impressive new Ranger was released to huge acclaim from motoring writers. In October, the Ranger also created motoring history by becoming the first ever utility vehicle to receive the maximum 5 Star Euro NCAP safety rating. In the Euro NCAP tests, it scored 89 per cent for overall safety and achieved the highest rating for pedes-trian protection too. Local enquiry levels for the new Ranger have been high – a fair reflection of its outstanding design and technology.

The all-new Ford Focus is also proving popular among local buyers with its stylish new aerodynamic design and impressive list of specifications. What people may not know is the lengths that Ford went to design the Focus to accommodate the different and growing sizes of drivers and passengers from around the world. Using the latest 3D body data, show-ing statistics such as height, hip width and leg length, Ford engineers have designed the cabin to ensure that 97 per cent of the world’s population can sit comfortably in the new Focus. They claim that no matter where in the world it is sold the Focus will be a good ‘fit’ for customers.

The third new model, just arrived at Ultimate, is the German-manufactured Ford Kuga Tita-nium. Having already enjoyed overwhelming popularity in Europe, the Kuga is loaded with leading technology, comfort and safety features, plus a 2.5 litre turbo-charged petrol engine, dual-action tailgate and masses of storage space. This charismatic new ‘crossover’ will capture the attention of Kiwis looking for a smaller-size SUV with a proven powertrain and full-time AWD system.

“The new Kuga Titanium provides a great performance-driving experience.” says Ford New Zealand marketing manager Chris Masterson. “The Kuga has been very popular in Europe and in New Zealand; it will be hard to beat.”

Contact Chris Frost or Paul Jackson at Ultimate Motor Group for more information or to arrange a test drive of any of these exciting new vehicles.

After his fi rst ride in a brand new quarter of a million dollar 1986

Merced es-Benz 450 SEL, Gordon Cadman was hooked for life.

The Midland and National president for the Mercedes-Benz Car Club of NZ Incor-porated says the club is more than just “old buggers in fl ash cars” and was surprised at the number of car owners in the area.

Since its beginning in 2006, the club now has 103 members from Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupo, Pukekohe, Coromandel

and Hamilton – part of the some 80,000 Mercedes-Benz car Club members world-wide.

The M-Benz Car Club of New Zealand is supported by Daimler-Benz headquarters located in Stuttgart, Germany.

“We started up with 30 of us,” says Gordon. “It has grown like topsy. People often don’t realise there is a Mercedes-Benz car club around, but there are heaps of car owners in the area.”

The club encompasses the classics, from those manufactured in the 1950s to the

newest models. Some notable cars in the club are a 1953 300SL, a 1960’s 280 Compact, a 1970 280SE and several prized E-Class models; a 280, a 320 and a 350.

Gordon, who currently owns a Mercedes-Benz 2005 E –class 350, says while the older cars carry nostalgia, he thinks the new technology in the vehicles is fabulous.

“I love Mercedes for their effortless ride. The features in them were well ahead of their times. “I had more features in my Mercedes made in the 1980s than what you would fi nd in a modern car today.”
